I toured several places and found this to be the best place for my Mom. I think at first the main reasons being because all the room's exit into a main hallway, not to the outside. The other 5 places I toured with my Dad were way more expensive, not as nice, didn't have welcoming staff (one place had NO STAFF in the lobby during the 30 minute wait we had), and more. I liked this for more security, safety and home feeling. The rooms/apartments have a space right outside the door that you can decorate as a porch which was super cool. My Mom had two chairs and a table in her area and people would stop and sit to take a rest which would allow my Mom to meet new friends easily. The main hallway actually wraps around the entire building so on days it's not good to walk outside, a walking group will walk the halls on each level. This is also good for those that like to walk but shouldn't walk outside due to wandering. The staff is super friendly, nice and caring. They all make it an effort to know all the residents well and make them feel welcomed. They have lots of things to do also which helped keep my Mom busy. They have planned travel days to various stores and outings via their buses. They also will provide transportation to and from Doctor Appointment within the area. The rooms were very nice, clean, looked brand new for an older building. They had front door peep-holes and door bells, like an actual apartment. They provide local phone service and a 24 hour emergency alert necklaces for the tenants, but wi-fi you need to provide yourself (we got a discounted plan for $20 a month with Cox). The restaurant (I call it) is just like a restaurant. The meals change and you get a nice, customized, bound menu when you go to eat. Two meals a day is standard but you can purchase a third. There are also other services you can purchase if needed. Family is encouraged to visit for meals and the food is good. There is also on-site assistance services you can hire to help administer medication, take blood pressure, take on personal shopping trips, etc. My Mom really liked that they have happy hour every Friday at 4:30 and friends and family are welcome. Makes it a great opportunity to meet the other residents and staff. The inner exterior area of the facility is really nice and welcoming. One side has a heated pool and golf putting area, and the other side has a large pond area complete with turtles and ducks. Lots of places to sit outside and enjoy good weather. I wish my Mom could have stayed longer, but her condition worsened rapidly, but the facility accepted our 30 day notice of vacating before the year contract was up with no issues (due to declining health). Oh, you can have small pets here too, though my Mom didn't. It's definitely worth checking out. read more

I've lived long enough to know that no place is perfect, but what I've been seeing around here just isn't right. The food is rarely cooked properly. Half the time it's tough as leather, doesn't taste very good, and some of the meal combinations don't make much sense. At our age, eating shouldn't feel like a chore. Many of us look forward to our meals, and it's disappointing when they're consistently poor. And then there's Scott. My friend asked him one day why he puts cabbage on just about everything. Instead of giving a respectful answer, Scott said, "Because it's delicious," in a smart-aleck sort of way. It was rude and dismissive. Why is someone who talks to residents like that still in charge of the dining room? Today I waited nearly 30 minutes for a simple sandwich. Thirty minutes. That's ridiculous. The care staff aren't much better. During an activity, a lady politely mentioned that they were being too loud. They were carrying on, laughing, and making so much noise you could hardly hear what was going on. Sounded like a bunch of cackling hyenas. Instead of showing some respect, they told her to hush up. I heard it with my own ears. What bothers me most is that many of the staff seem lazy and uninterested in helping residents. Too often they're standing around talking while residents are left waiting. We pay a lot of money to live here, and we deserve better than that. My wife and I have been here a long time. This is our home. At our age, packing up and moving isn't as simple as people think. We shouldn't have to consider leaving just because nobody wants to listen to the residents. The Executive Director needs to spend less time listening to department heads and more time listening to the people who actually live here. We're the ones paying to be here. We're the ones experiencing these problems every day. All we're asking for is decent food, respectful staff, and the quality of care we were promised. A Concerned Resident read more

My dad was 86 years old when my sister found him on the floor of his apartment. He had apparently been there for at least two nights. No one had checked on him, and by the time he was found, he was nearly dead. After his stay in the ER, he was admitted to a rehab facility for three months. During this entire time, he continued to pay rent at Thunderbird. While he was away, his apartment became uninhabitable due to a water leak. People were in and out constantly making repairs. Within a month of his return--still recovering, foggy, and dealing with incontinence--he was served eviction papers. We already had additional cleaning services arranged and a plan in place, but Michael, the director, chose to send court papers directly to my dad without notifying any family members. He knew an 86-year-old man fresh out of the hospital could not advocate for himself in court. It was heartless, to say the least. My dad didn't fully understand what the papers meant and didn't tell us; he thought Michael's threat to call the sheriff was just that--a threat. Thank God for the good people at Cornerstone who reached out to me. I live out of state and had no idea what Thunderbird was planning. The way Thunderbird handled this situation showed a complete lack of integrity and ethics. Please don't be misled by their claims of genuinely caring about the well-being of your loved ones--because in our experience, it simply wasn't true. read more

I left an Atria property in Scottsdale because they raised rates over 15% for each of the 2 years I lived there and because food service was slow due to a shortage of servers. I am very happy with Thunderbird because they offer more services, and the staff is exceptionally helpful. The dining experience is very good. I rarely have to wait less than 3 minutes for service and the food is healthy and tasty. In December the property was sold to Stellar Management and they are doing a great job! read more

Turmoil to say the least. 9/2022 residents were notified of an increase effective 11/2022. Increases that I am aware of range from 10 - 17%. The SS increase will not even cover this and they are front running it by 2 months. Now the Manager has also hinted of another increase coming 1/2023. I would highly recommend those considering this property wait until this gets straightened out. read more

This is absolutely the worst memory care place ever. Do not place your loved one here unless you want them to suffer neglect. This place kept feeding my diabetic parent sugar and suggested that a little would not be harmful. Then they missed a diabetic wound on his foot because they weren't supervising his showers. He almost had to have his toe amputated. They breached their contract of care as well as continuing to raise rates even when I had a written contract that prohibited them from raising rates more than 4% in a year. After my parent moved out, they bullied him by sending bills with no explanation as to what they were for and threatening collections. I called and emailed 3 times with no response. Run far away from this place. read more

I was referred to Thunderbird Senior Living Center by A Place for Mom. ( They no longer refer anyone to this facility). I helped rent my friend a one bedroom apt in June 2022. I found out that the financial questions were only to find out how much to charge him. He was charged over $150 more than other residents who also moved in June/July. His rent was $2140. This was supposed to include three meals a day and housekeeping. Originally the food and dining room was pretty good. Unfortunately Thunderbird Corp office cut the food budget by 50% in July. The food selection and the quality of the food quickly diminished. Ex: they only offered sugar free jello for their diabetic residents. How sad is that. I noticed that the food was prepared incorrectly. It was either burned or raw. This caused numerous residents including myself to get food poisoning and chronic diarrhea. My friend chose to " Opt Out" of their food program which he did so in writing. He was told that they would sue him if he failed to pay for it. One resident actually took photos of their kitchen and filed a complaint with the Az health dept. They also had a resident drowned because the security guard gave her the pool key at midnight and never checked on her again. She was found floating the next morning. They have also had a Hugh problem with their security guards Over 25 residents had the catalytic converters stolen from their cars and some even had their gas lines cut and the windows broken. They have NO outdoor security cameras either. None of the security guards even went outside. There are no lights outside either. Thunderbird campus is located in a low income area so there are many transient individuals walking around all the time. It's very dangerous at night. To make maters worse one of their security guards entered three different apts without knocking. There was No reason for him to enter. When he was asked about it he said that "he could do whatever he wanted to". I have never seen a business or corporation ever keep any employees after a sexual harassment complaint was filed. Thunderbird ignored all three written complaints. The offenders are still employed. That is despicable. Scott is the head of security and housekeeping. I have personally had an altercation with him about the lack of security in and around Thunderbird campus. The windows on my car were broken and my wheel caps on my car were stolen (@$100 each). . Scott retaliated against me by having my car illegally towed off the premises claiming that it was a transient who was living in it. The make and model of my car was listed on the Thunderbird rent agreement so he knew what car I drove. He didn't get permission from the administrator before doing so. He also failed to call the Glendale Police department which is required before towing a car. So therefore it was a totally unlawful tow. Then he hired Maverick Towing (also failed to contact the police dept before towing my car ). Maverick failed to tow my car on a flatbed . A Lincoln Towncar has to be towed on a flatbed because it's too heavy and too long to be towed on a fork or hook. They also did not lock up the steering wheel so my car fishtailed all the way to their yard. Obviously I complained to the administrator the following day. Thunderbird did pay to have my car released from the tow yard however the illegal tow not only broke the control arm on my car but it also bent the frame. I am STILL in negotiations with Thunderbird to resolve this issue. The last issue is the cleanliness of the place itself. The lobby chairs are covered in fabric and have numerous stains of urine and feces on them. I observe them Only being wiped or hosed off and not even disinfected by their staff. There's constantly urine puddles on the floors and even "skid marks" on some of the furniture. I could only imagine what a black light would illuminate when the lights are off. This place is filthy. I strongly suggest that you DO NOT put your friends and/ or family members here. I hope the health dept shuts them down. read more

When I walked in, I thought I had the wrong place. I have visited and shot documentary footage at over 100 elderly care facilities across the country and this place was not like any of the others. This place felt like a real home, not a facility. It's the cleanest most inviting place I have seen to date. The owner and staff are all very sweet people. I met a few of the residents and to my surprise, they were all happy and smiling and talkative. The place is filled with amazing artwork from around the world (I think the owner is an art collector) and the thing I remembered most is that there was this great clean candle that gave the house a scent of just feeling at home. 5 out of 5. My husband & I spent a very happy year here. The staff is wonderful & very considerate of the residents' needs.

My mom is 92 and has lived in the assisted living section (they also have unassisted living) since September of 2012.. The staff is incredible, and with me living on the east coast, I feel she is living at a Ritzy retirement resort because the price they charge is very reasonable (she has a bedroom, den, bathroom, and kitchen and lots of storage which really makes for comfortable living)...I've visited and actually stayed at a guest suite for several days and I think the food was great! They also provide entertainment at night and several activities for seniors during the day..Buses leave almost hourly (?) to take seniors shopping..I had asked her to tell me just ONE person she didn't like (she has many care givers) and she said "they are all great!" Trust me, mom is blunt and wouldn't hesitate to tell me...The staff wears comfortable clothing (no scrubbs) so people don't feel they are in a "facility".. This place is truly a community! She came from living alone in her home and now she has so many people to talk to and everyone is so nice to her..If you take a tour of this place it's just gorgeous and even includes a pool. To all the assisted living gals that I can think of (Shannon, Lisa, and Adrien), bless you all! You are some of the most amazing and caring people I have ever met..I know my mom is in good hands there which really helps me sleep at night :))) read more

My mother is a resident at Thunderbird Retirement Resort. She has lived there for over a year now in their Independent Living section. They also have an assisted living section. Over the last few months, I have noticed some changes. The kitchen staff has changed for the better. The food is better and the new staff is very attentive and friendly. One of the biggest changes I've noticed is the addition of a new, full time nurse. They've always had a nurse in the building, but more of a part time position. The nurse they've employed is now there full time and she is wonderful. She is very knowledgeable and willing to help. She is a great addition to this facility. Also, I've noticed that the assisted living staff is helping out with the independent living residents a lot more than before. My mom has called them a few times and they always show up promptly, smiling, and willing to help. They have a new doctors clinic in the building which employs a visiting doctor to my moms apartment. I am very happy with the changes the management has made not only for my moms sake, but for all the residents at Thunderbird Retirement Resort. I highly recommend this facility to anyone looking in the Glendale area. read more
