Yay for electrolysis near my place! I've been seeing Elyse and Cecelia since 2005 for various hair removal treatments. I'm not sure why the 1 star person got such bad burns, but yes, you should get a lower current or frequency if you're just starting out and let them know about any skin problems. Both ladies are so professional and I have seen results with each treatment done. I was referred to by two friends and I'm happy I was. Hair that was once unruly and a pain to look at is finally gone! They have an ice machine and will numb the areas that need to be zapped, which is always quite helpful when you're in pain, like I usually am. Like their website says : - arrive early, if you're going to be late, call them! They have things to do and could probably book a last minute client if possible. - bring cash or a check ( yes, they take checks!!!) I saw Elyse a number of times. I have mixed feelings. On the one hand, she is fast and efficient, and was able to cover more ground in less time than anyone else I've been to. On the other hand, what I at first perceived to be chatty friendliness soon began to feel extremely uncomfortable and invasive. She asks an inordinate amount of questions, nosy ones, and doesn't back off even when it's clear the client doesn't want to answer. She also makes sweeping generalizations about entire groups of people and when you're lying flat on your back, at the mercy of her zapping needle, it's not really the time to get into a heated discussion. She also once surprised me with a significant price increase that there had been no warning about. For me, the tipping point was when she kept insisting I must have a disorder or condition because I'm overweight and have facial hair and inquiring time after time if I'd seen someone about it. I assume she was referring to PCOS, which many thin people have as well, but it really doesn't matter. She is not a medical professional and I did not come here for a diagnosis. I came for electrolysis. Had she said, "I don't think your hair growth is responding to electrolysis and I don't want you to waste your money if it's not helping. You might want to see an endocrinologist to see if there's an underlying cause before you continue," and then left it to me, that would've been entirely different. I was so happy to have found Park Slope Electrolysis last year when I moved to Brooklyn from LA. My unwanted hair is clearing up and we've even been able to move to new areas. The ladies (Cecilia + Elyse) are extremely friendly and will answer any questions you have about the process or offer advice. They are also good with texting appointment reminders. I need to seek out a new electrolysis removal place at the end of this summer. I have been going to 1-hour electrolysis sessions every week 2015-2016, then every-other-week 2016 to August 2018. I tried different places till I settled on a place with easy booking and only okay pricing. My electrologist, however much I love her, got too comfortable with me, taking calls or sending texts during our timed sessions, only to tell me her prices were going up. I found PSE through yelp and so happy I did. I had an appointment with Cecelia for 45 minutes last month. In a totally uninterrupted, and professional 45 minutes, Cecelia was able to cover all the problematic areas without hesitation. She did such a great job making sure I was comfortable. read more

Nice and knowledgeable women who run the place. The electrolysis got rid of many tough and annoying chin hairs, and lip hairs at the pace of one 15-minute session per month over the course of 5-6 months at $40 a pop. MUCH better deal than the $300 I spent on a Silk n Flash a few years ago which did NOTHING over the course of a year. (That thing should be looked into by whoever controls these things!! Big rip off.) The treatment can be a little painful especially about the nose and mouth area, so ask for numbing cream or the ice bag if you think you might need it. I contacted PSE after researching electrologist in the area, particularly anyone who use Apilus Platinum (AP) machine, was cheaper than Manhattan rates, and was licensed CPE style. Cover yourself and seek an electrologist whom is both a member of the AEA and a Certified Professional Electrologist (CPE). At least s/he is keeping up to date on the latest in the field. I had just returned to NYC from Seattle where I had begun treatment using that device. Unfortunately for my hair removal journey, I had intermittent sessions with various electrologists over 4 yrs because I traveled often. I tried Galvanic, Thermolysis, and Blend- single and multiple needle. I had the best results with Blend techniques with the AP. I can't recall which machine PSE used. My appointments at PSE marked the first time, I had at least 6 or so consecutive treatments every 5-6 weeks without a break. My results are noticeable and permanent. I was told I would need at least 18 months worth of treatments-industry standard, I guess. I paced my chin and arm pit treatments together at 5 wk intervals. Often, I wished I could return sooner because I wanted to be baby bottom smooth skin asap. Although the website mentions Elyse, CPE, I met her only once. Her partner, Celia did all my treatments. I assume she too had Elise's certifications??? I never asked or checked. Boo, me. She was talkative, after all she listens to NPR all day, fast and focused. She suggested that I purchase EMLA cream to desensitize my underarms prior to our sessions. I never bought it because I thought I needed a prescription and did not have insurance at the time. Duh, why didn't I look to Google. I toughed out each session out with a ziplock bag full of ice under each arm prior to treatment. Often she'd ice my right armpit first, the more sensitive side then began her work after 2 minutes of icing on the left. There was no time to wait I guess. I swallowed any discomfort because 1- I didn't buy the EMLA and 2- hairlessness beats pain any day. I experienced sensitivity for up to 24 and used baby powder instead of deodorant following each session. I almost never got ingrowns-unless it was an unruly hair fighting its last good fight. I did get little white heads that dried up. Within 2-3 days tops the little scabs were gone. Nothing a little alcohol on a cotton swab and foundation didn't clear up. I saw no hyper-pigmentation. The $85 for 60min was well worth it. I paid $100-$110 in the City. The office was clean, well cleaner than some midtown spots I had visited. Unfortunately, due to a misunderstanding over scheduling, I was dropped as a client without any explanation. My calls and email went unanswered. Normally, PSE charges for you for missed appointments or late cancellation, rightfully so, but this was not my case. I knew Celia had undergone surgery of some sort, but I never heard back. Either way, arrive a few minutes early. Buy EMLA and apply it way beforehand. Call way ahead of time if your schedule changes. I was doing electrolysis with another woman who was treating my chin area and random dark hairs on my face. Most of the hair was gone and the few hairs that I had were sporadic and fine. I went to Cecelia because my usual go to moved away. First she numbed my face which I thought was weird but figured, "hey, no pain! Right?".. Well, since my face was numb I could not tell if my hair was dead when being pulled. I have a feeling my hairs were plucked because two weeks later my hairs grew in thicker, darker and more coarse than before. I figured since this was my first time I should mention this to Cecilia to possible be mindful and use settings more appropriate for me, since This is NOT my typical electrolysis experience. Cecelia, is incredibly arrogant and could not take my honesty. She replied with no questions about the area treated and instead explained that she "liked" me but that she is not the electrolysis for me. She also tried to say that it was not a result of her plucking but hormones or other factors. However, I thought it was strange this is how the hairs she treated grew back. At this point I knew I was never using her again but figured I would explain the importance of being able to handle a client making mention of an outcome that wasn't desired to be able to understand and better treat them effectively. She responded by stating she did not "pluck" my hair. Since, in that conversation I did not accuse her of doing so- I responded with "I never said you plucked my hair". I found her response to be strange, she is quick and not affective. My usual lady targets each hairs follicle. Cecelia said , " we'll be here all day" when I mentioned this to her. That probably explains why her treatments are ineffective. I had an appointment yesterday in bayridge with an amazing woman. There are plenty of others Cecilia- you are absolutely not the last electrolysis left- but you are correct, you are definitely not the one for me. These women are great. Totally professional, quick and clearly very experienced. I recommend highly. I went to them for about a year and it made a real difference. They are very smart women because as another reviewer said they sit and listen to NPR all day. I found them to be pretty flexible with scheduling as well. I've been nervous about getting electrolysis because it's painful and I was worried about permanent marks from the needle on my face. It's not too bad, but it seems like the number of hairs are increasing and I just couldn't wait any longer. I've waxed, but it turns out to be the wrong thing to do on the face. I've considered lazer since I had great results on my bikini area, but I've read that it's not the solution for the face. After a lot of researching, I selected this place. They were great! It's not a salon, it's a no nonsense office. There are two women that work there. The woman that did my face was personable, knowledgeable and FAST. She's been doing this for a long time. She 'cleaned' me up in 15 mins! The thing about selecting a good place is they have to have experience, knowledge and they should be fast. If they are slow, they are just taking your money and prolonging the pain. but they have to know what they are doing too. A lot of people do this for the money and they're slow, sloppy, they have a shaky hand, they're machines are old, or they don't do it enough to know the correct amount of electric current. Regarding the pain, it wasn't too bad actually. Some areas felt a little worse than others, and I don't know if I could do more than a 15 minute session at a time. I took an advil a half hour before the treatment to help cut down on any pain. Also, regarding skin reaction, I only got what looked like zits and that wasn't until day 4 after the treatment. There was no other skin reaction from the electrolysis; in fact, i went out to a dinner that night. They are extremely careful about sanitizing everything. read more

After spending hundreds of dollars on 15-min sessions to account for a couple dozen hairs and seeing both ladies over the course of 15 months, I'm STILL dealing with pesky remaining hairs. The machine has a 100% success rate but the technician is a different story. After voicing my complaints, I received no response and am happy to find there are much more aesthetically pleasing, professional and affordable options thanks to Groupon!! I am pleased to report that the pesky hairs that were my reason for seeking out PSE in the first place are LOSING the war against the electrified needle! I came here for bi-monthly treatments for 9 months. I saw absolutely no improvement. To make matters worse, the area that was treated now turns bright red whenever the area gets flushed. In short, Im worse off than I started after many months and a huge amount of money. read more

I have been getting electrolysis done on an off for the past 18 years. I am pretty much at the maintenance stage where I only go every few months for spare hairs. I had a great electrologist in NJ, and even when I moved to NYC, I would take the train back there for treatment. That got old after a while, so I tried looking for places in NYC. The places I went to were not accustomed to African American skin, or they just basically tweezed the hairs attempting to make it seem like electrolysis. I pretty much gave up over the past year, but decided to begin the search again and found this place. It happens to be right in my back yard, and Cecilia is very efficient and no-nonsense. I felt no tugging on the skin as she pulled hairs out which is a good sign. I was in and out in less than 15 minutes. read more

Don't get burned! I did, when I went to see Elyse at Park Slope Electrolysis. After waiting for at least 10 minutes after my appointment time, I was treated to a very high current on my upper lip and face. I am still red where I was treated nearly two weeks later with some sort of blister under my skin that I truly hope goes away. My aesthetician agreed that the skin was burned, but even after applying cortisone for a few days, I still have a unslightly ed bump above my upper lip. Pretty nice! When I contacted Elyse to tell her I was burned, she went to great lengths to defend her reputation, but had never considered starting a new client with a lower current or asking them if they have sensitive skin. She has preferred to use her clients as guinea pigs apparently, by starting with a high current, see how bad they get burned -- and only then adjusting down the current -- if the client returns. Then she had the cohones to ask me not to write a review for fear of destroying her reputation. Quite an ethical businesswoman too, that Elyse! So apparently my experience does not count to Elyse. Elyse: did it ever occur to you that you get the reputation you deserve? I won't be returning. I encourage people to avoid Park Slope Electrolysis at all costs. read more

I went here several times and only dealt w/ Elyse so I don't know how Cecelia is.......... Did she remove the hair?... Yes........... Was the experience WITH ELYSE professional and comfortable?? Abbbbbbsolutely NOT. She has no concept about when to stop asking personal questions. She was infinitely too inquisitive about my career and personal life.... Not like she's a lesbian or anything but more like, "Well how did you do that??" and prying when I was becoming ambiguous and trying to change the conversation.... I'm not sure if she's surprised someone "like me" could be so successful but her line of questioning was 10 seconds short of asking me my income. I always give someone a freebie/ benefit of the doubt but when I returned, SHE initiated the conversation again about the same invasive questions. This happened on about 2 of the 3 times I went and stopped going when I saw this was gonna become a pattern with her. I now travel all the way to 34th street to get my electrolysis done, which is an additional 30mins commute when I live so close to Elyse's establishment and I also pay more in the city, JUST to avoid Busybody Nosey Elyse. read more
