I'll be the first to admit I don't know the first thing about CrossFit. Except the name tells me it has something to do with some hybrid training and being fit. I will also say I've had but 1 handful of kick-boxing type classes my entire fitness exposure. Like 3. But what I remember is that it's a great form of cardio, balance, a raw sort of release without hurting anyone and ending up in a sweatbath. A great workout if you ask me. This gym is a large rectangular warehouse (what u imagine modern day Rocky would train in) that's hollowed out 2 stories high, equipped with all your essentials: dead weights, benches, ropes, bags, frames and hangy ropes for the lack of technical description. Industrial fans, row of bikes, clean restrooms that look added as they are a must. Mostly, it's a lot of empty space for running, planking, boxing and splaying out. We trained one on one separately with Henry, a master muy Thai fighter who caters to all levels. I watched my guy the day before as Henry worked him out, correcting his form at a moderate pace- still, the most I've seen my guy move skillfully and committed. I was a bit horrified at what he'd signed me up for today. Let me assure you- Henry is a pro. He gets right to the heart of every motion with one-two corrective instruction. He sees your effort and affirms it, even when it's just ok but goes back to edit whenever possible in the 2 minute interval taps. There were 2 longer breaks for water (3-5 mins) and ample 1 minute breaks throughout each combo/repeat we'd work on. My Achilles heel (if I had to pick one!) would be my left kick. Henry never tire of correcting my form offering suggestions as I keep repeating my poor form: pivoting, forgetting to drop my left arm while holding up my right, throwing forward my L hip, leaning, coordinating the kick with R foot turn, keeping my L extended/ bent or any combination of these elements. Henry continues to reaffirm and incorporate combos with attention and pause to the weaker areas. He reminds me to breath and never lets the heart-rate down, yet tempos the sets to a tee. We finish off with repeating power kicks and summation of points. I don't have anyone to compare Henry to, but his honest, good nature and expertise in the art is transparent. We will definitely be back for more instruction from Henry and try out their freebie Saturday CrossFit intros- call first just in case it's full. read more

Park Slope Crossfit just opened up not too long ago and I am super excited!!! With swimsuit season right around the corner, I definitely need help to get rid of some extra flab that I've gained. I love this place so much. I really think joining Park Slope Crossfit was one of those better decisions I made recently. All coaches are fantastic. Actually it's pretty unreal how great every single of them are. (I usually work with Sam, Mark and Julie.) You can tell that they really care about helping you progress and achieve your goal safely. Also workouts are very reasonably programmed. Despite how Crossfit often has a reputation for being dangerously strenuous on your body, I found the program here to be just right, challenging yet safe. Also this place doesn't force that intense competitiveness I found intimidating at some other gyms. It is a total judgment-free zone here. Everyone comes in different fitness levels and conditions, and they are all progressing in their own way. Members here are generally very helpful, encouraging, and welcoming. Ever since I joined here, going to the gym has become one of the highlights of my day that I always look forward to. read more

I'll be fair with this one :-)... I found out about this place by lurking on yelp one boring Tuesday afternoon (or whichever day it was). I decided to come because... what's better than a free workout class? For starters, the place is fairly new and has only been open for approximately 6 weeks, so they are still working on building out the remainder of the gym. However, let's keep this review based on the free class... I've NEVER done cross-fit before and boy do I understand the challenge of it now. The instructors here are very friendly and personable to the point you feel that you're working out with friends (which is great if you're intimidated by the workout itself). I remember saying to myself "wow, Levi is talking so much this class is basically all talk and no action" (Levi is the instructor's name). So then we got into the workout (which I won't spoil and tell you exactly which moves we did *you lose*), and noting that it was only 8 minutes I told myself that this was easy and I could do it. About 3 minutes in and I SWEAR I started to think about the lovely things my obituary would read because I was so sure I was going to die soon. All in all 4 stars because (1) the workout WAS INTENSE, (2) the instructors were amazingly friendly, motivating (helped me push myself harder), and they know their SHIT! (very informative and very attentive to your form during the workouts) (3) and because the space is huge, clean, and has great potential (I can just see the beauty of it now). It's still building so I had to knock off a star, and plus this was a free class I would need to actually take real classes to see where it'll take me. Definitely enjoyed myself! read more

I tried one of the classes here during their grand opening. The workout was vigorous and the trainers were attentive. One of the proprietors, Roger, made fun of my short shorts, but they're alright people. I think if your shorts are sufficiently long, you should work out here and nobody will bother you. If you have sexy legs like me and want to wear short shorts, you may want to try another CrossFit gym. read more

If you want to be fit but are maybe hesitant about CrossFit "nuts," then Park Slope CrossFit is your answer. Even though I have loved the idea of CrossFit since I first heard about it, the whole "cultish" aspect of it scared me away for a long time. It wasn't until I was living abroad and letting my fitness totally disintegrate because I was afraid of signing up for a membership at a French gym that two of my Canadian friends there, who had both been doing CrossFit for 3 years, finally convinced me to try it. And of course, despite it not always being in English, I loved it. But there, it was mainly elite-level athletes, so it was pretty intimidating for an out-of-shape foreigner like me. When I moved back to the US, I knew I wanted to continue doing CrossFit, but now I was faced with the fortunate problem of having lots of choices. There were several CrossFit gyms (I refuse to call them "boxes") within walking distance. I tried a few intro classes here and there and just popped in to see others and talk to the owners. When I got to Park Slope CrossFit, I knew the search was over. The owners/coaches were so approachable and friendly that the entire vibe of the gym was casual and welcoming. It was the opposite of intimidating. Since I had just done a Foundations course at the gym in France, they let me join without repeating that (which is a big money saver and which not all gyms will allow you to do). So I can't speak to their Foundations course (they call it on ramp) or the free intro class, except to say that I know the free intro class is given twice a week and is meant for total beginners, newbies to CrossFit, so everyone is in the same boat in that class. I've been a member of the gym for over a year now, and all the other members have become like my family here. We all introduce ourselves to new people when they are just starting out, and everyone cheers each other on and encourages each other. The coaches are great, not only at teaching people who have never done weight lifting how to do Olympic lifts, but also at suggesting stretches that would be helpful based on the day's workout and at suggesting modifications when maybe you're not exactly at the level yet where you can do something like a pull-up or a large quantity of pushups. The members here are regular people who just happen to want to be as fit as they can be. There are some outstanding athletes at the gym, and it's great to be able to learn from them, but it's not the kind of place that is out of range for people who aren't quite at that level. CrossFit is great for people who get bored at gyms and need variety in their workouts, and also for people who like getting a prescribed workout and individualized attention from a personal trainer but with the camaraderie and energy of a group class. And, in my opinion, Park Slope CrossFit has the chillest, most welcoming environment in which to WORK YOUR ASS OFF! read more

I can't recommend Park Slope CrossFit highly enough. In fact, I travel from King's Highway to Park Slope just for Park Slope CrossFit's classes. The trainers are terrific, especially Steve Lynch. Steve has pushed me to new levels of strength and endurance I never thought I could attain. He is endlessly patient with the coordination- challenged like myself. He is a stickler for technique that prevents injuries. He adapts workouts to whatever level or age you are at. Although I'm a special fan of Steve's, the other trainers are also excellent. Put aside your idea of cross-fit and take a free class is what I tell people now. The workouts are high intensity and they have gotten me into great shape. There are definitely jokes and spoofs of Crossfit, but I think Park Slope CrossFit offers a fun, friendly, casual atmosphere. I've been working out with Sam, Steve and Levi for over 2 years now. They are the first crossfit instructors I've had and for the most part the only ones I've had. I've heard people having variable experiences with crossfit, but what it comes down to for someone starting out is the people you work with. These guys do their research and know their stuff, from day one the focus was on form, staying healthy and preventing injuries. The atmosphere has always been laid back, friendly. For example, generally everyone stays to cheer on the last person until they finish the workout. This gym they opened several months ago, it's a nice big space, great equipment, and classes are mostly small (less than 4 people), at least for now while word has not yet gotten out. I've been a member at dolphin, harbour, and nysc and the problem has always been that I'm always too lazy or something always comes up and I end up usually fizzling out after month 2-3 of a year contract. Another problem with gyms is that I usually wandering aimlessly not sure what exercise to do and wasting a lot of time. I went to a free class park slope crossfit on a friends recommendation, not really expecting to join because it's pretty far from me and because I'm already a member at nysc so it would be a waste of money. It turns out I really liked the class, everyone is real friendly and I really feel like I got a workout. So I thought ok I'll join for a month and then just do the routines by myself at the gym but it's been like 4 months and I can't see myself leaving here. I thought the cost was going to be prohibitive but I have to say this place has earned every cent. I'm really happy with the results and I can't wait to see how much further I will be able to push myself in the coming months. The staff here is exceptional, very professional and always available to answer a question. It's just kinda nice when they call you by your first name as you walk through. Also the people who come here are not who I expected, I was worried there were going to be a lot of roiders here but actually a lot of nice, supportive everyday professionals. If you were to ask me why join this crossfit box over another I couldn't tell you since this is the only one I've been to. All I can say is that I'm about as lazy as they come and this place and its staff has managed to make me excited to drive 30 minutes on the bqe to come work out, I feel that speaks for itself. read more

Though I have always aimed to keep fitness a priority, I found myself getting bored with the daily gym routines and constant running being a college athlete. I found gyms to be just a hub of people talking about weight loss fads and after classes, I left alone, not bonding with the other members. Two months ago, on a whim, I signed up for a free intro class on my birthday. Since then, I have completed an intro session and begun a cross fit membership. The trainers here are so knowledgable and outgoing. They make sure you are consistent with form and push up to your absolute hardest in each and every workout. Being an athlete, i have always found it hard to train alone on breaks. At cross fit, I have been integrated into both a community and a team in which i push others and myself. Who knew I could squat almost 100lbs? I am so indebted to what the cross fit community has given me in the last three months and can ensure anyone that it is truly a life changing experience. read more

I've been meaning to give this place a stellar review, but I've been caught up with moving! Used to live right near this gym and briefly went to the 6 am class here. The facilities are what you'd expect of a Crossfit box, edgy looking and semi unfinished industrial kind of stuff. The trainers are great and no matter what your experience is they will take the time to teach you what you need to know. The other great part about this gym is that you get to do group workouts with some really phenomenal, very friendly athletes from all over BK. Very technical and knowledgeable crossfit coaches at this crossfit gym. Although it is a relatively new gym, every trainer that teaches the class here is well experienced and is very approachable. Great group of individuals running this gym. They explain the proper form for various lifts very well, which is very important when if you'll be attending crossfit classes in the long run.
