Well that's not true, I took one jiu jitsu class a few years ago and it was the most unwelcoming environment I have ever been in, but that's a story for another day. My boss, who is actually the homie, started doing Muay Thai at Church Street Boxing recently and told me to tag along for a class as I'm always shadow boxing and talking MMA with her in the office lol. I did a free trial intro level Muay Thai class at 7am, and got there about 5 minutes before to check in and get gloves. I was instructed that the Muay Thai room is in the back. I walked through the main boxing gym floor to the men's locker room, and I swear this place feels like it's out of a Rocky movie. It's a grungy, no frills gym with loads of character. This is not a "boxercise" class or a cardio kickboxing gym. If you want to look all cute in your boxing wraps and gloves, this isn't the place. This is a fighters gym. I was told that almost all of the coaches are active or former fighters. It would be the perfect setting to film a boxing movie in lol. I set my stuff down and nervously walked to the Muay Thai room in the back. I saw my boss and about 7 others warming up as the teacher, Lauren, came and introduced herself and was super welcoming. We started with 5-10 minutes of jump rope which I LOVED, I can jump rope all mf day. It's actually my party trick, I know my way around a jump rope I swear to god. After the warm up we started shadow boxing in the mirror and I immediately reverted to my prime Conor Mcgregor/Lyoto Machida karate stance that I have been doing for YEARS as my shower is warming up ahahahaa. Light on my feet bouncing back and forth, arms out wide, settle and play baby. My shampoo bottles have seen me win so many world titles. Lauren came over and helped me individually, teaching me a proper Muay Thai stance and basic punch and kick fundamentals. In contrast to my jiu jitsu experience all those years ago, she was extremely cognisant of it being my first ever class and it was much appreciated. She walked the fine line of being helpful without alienating me in front of the rest of the class lol. We then paired up, one person holding pads and the other throwing combos that Lauren had just taught us. I felt like Rodtang or Charles Oliviera hitting clean combos on those pads. It was so much fun. My boss was lowkey BLASTING me with kicks though ahahaha she has some power on those. I couldn't imagine taking a head kick. It's honestly like a baseball bat coming at you. One thing I didn't take into consideration was the class is barefoot and I have severe hyperhidrosis of the feet -- I'm sorry I know it's nasty, but it's me. I was essentially trying to throw kicks on a slip n slide due to my sweaty feet, as I just couldn't get a clean base. I'm really shy (sad face) so I felt terrible to be sweating like that on the mats haha. But, in contrast to some of these other reviews, they cleaned the mats thoroughly right after the class wrapped up. After class in the men's locker room, there was a super nice older gentleman who was talking my ear off about the sport, tips and tricks, how long he'd been doing it, etc. After saying goodbye and asking his name he said "They call me Action Jackson, but you can just call me Action" ... I thought I was being punked ahahaha I really felt like I was in a Rocky movie after that exchange. Not exaggerating when I say that this place has changed my life! I have often found it difficult to…read moremake time to exercise, or to stick with a workout plan once I've started it. However, a few years ago I signed up for one of the Park Fitness boot camps (first thing in the morning, three days a week) and the rest is history. I genuinely enjoy going to classes here and have noticed serious differences in my strength, stamina, and energy. The classes I've attended have been welcoming to a wide range of ages and fitness levels -- often, you'll be working with your own individual weights, so you have the opportunity to choose something heavier or lighter depending on how much you want to push yourself, or make adaptations to exercises if need be. The instructors and staff members are all super enthusiastic and supportive, and it really feels like a community. Facilities are always clean, neat, and well organized -- much nicer than many other gyms and fitness studios I've been to. I'm lucky enough to live within walking distance, but if I ever move, I suspect I will find myself traveling farther so I can continue to come here. It's absolutely worth it.

Two stories of equipment!…read more I've been a member for a few years, as well as a client of Evolve for some of those years. The first floor also houses Evolve Physical Therapy which has two office spaces in the facility, as well as shares the equipment and space at Harbor, meaning whether you are a member of Harbor or a client at Evolve you can use the equipment. The front desk staff is very friendly and recognize you after awhile. They even have fitness coaches you can employ (I believe the first session is comlimentary. There are television screens in front of most of the ellipticals as well treadmills; each treadmill, universal, bike and elliptical has their own screens as well although they either don't work for tv (just workout data) or I haven't figured it out yet. On the main floor also has a myriad of cardio and resistance gym equipment, different sized towels, a large spin or pilates room main floor, water fountain, alcohol wipe dispenser stations throughout, and one person restroom, and small lounge area. They also sell smoothies and protein shakes at reception. Downstairs are the punch/kick bags, free weights, and another room (yoga?), free men's and women's locker rooms (there are private ones upstairs, and a few downstairs as well), and a sauna (I don't remember if there was a shower - but there may be as I see people with towels and a hair dryer in restroom. The first floor which also serves the PT patients is ADA compliant. There is no elevator that I know of so the lower level is not. Most of the members are mindful in wiping down the equipment after they use it, for the next person to use. The building is right on the corner. Street meter parking on 5th Avenue, and free alternate side of the street parking on side streets - if you are lucky enough to find it. One block up from R train (closest station may be Prospect Avenue and 4th Avenue; whereas F and G at 9th Street and 4th Avenue). Their website has photos of the location - make sure you choose the one in South Slope on 550 5th Avenue because they have several locations in Brooklyn.

They also have a really great community of members and hold events like friendsgiving, ufc watch parties, Christmas get togethers, special Halloween events! And if you want to fight, they'll coach and find you a fight. Cant stress the community, cause they'll come to your fight and cheer you on, so you'll never feel alone. As for the pricing, it's prolly the best around as you're never locked into a long contract! It's very reasonable and flexible to meet your ever changing schedule.

The trainers at this gym are very observant, mindful and supportive. Members use apps to report our quality of sleep, mood, and soreness levels each day we train, so that the programs can be tailored to our capacity and motivation for that day. I appreciate that there are no mirrors and no music - just the sound of people working hard and getting stronger with occasional feedback from a trainer to ensure correct form. In just six weeks I have already noticed myself getting stronger and tackling more goals in my life outside fitness. Lifting weights is more meditative than I imagined; at SBWC it is practiced almost like a form of martial arts.

I think I googled "Brooklyn intro to powerlifting" or something like that, and up popped SBWC. I read some reviews, checked out their website and thought OK, it's kind of scary to do this on my own, but I have to try. My class was relatively large (5-6 people at least), but I felt that Becca and Paulie (owners and coaches) were able to give us truly individualized attention. During class, you learn the proper form step by step and then get to practice. In addition to the baseline lifts, you learn accessory lifts, the best nutrition for getting and staying strong, and the culture/vibe of the gym. The intro class includes unlimited access to the gym, and they suggest you stick with the training sessions at first so that a staff coach is available to guide you. Both Becca and Paulie are incredibly kind and knowledgeable. They make everyone feel welcome, from the hugest, most swole dude in there to the smallest newbie (that would be me). From seasoned lifters looking for some expert guidance in a great environment, or a brand new lifter with no idea where to begin, SBWC accommodates everyone on the spectrum of experience.
