All I can say is the place is legit and if you want to hit the bag or even get some mitt rounds in. This is the place to be. I went to Gleasons since I needed some bag work since I just got to New York. Coming in front desk personal will help you with your needs and charge you for your drop in and from there really you're ready to go. It's fairly an old school boxing gym and has a lot of culture. There was times when I would just mire the pictures all over the gym and really look at the history of how boxing came to be. I was offered to get some mitt work from one of the trainers but respectfully declined and was thankful though because some gyms just let you come in and out which is the goal overall. The gym was pretty busy at the time as well because the nearby hs youth came by for a fundraiser and there was free food and just prizes being given to the youth which was nice to see. I was also able to train near Pro boxers that were being filmed by either Top Rank/Dazn and it was amazing! I really was fanboying it out since I was training there and being surrounded by so much! All in all I'd recommend this gym to those who are either starting out in boxing and need a boxing home base near the Brooklyn area but also very friendly to those who just are in town and need a good sweat in or even just learn boxing basics! read more

Went here a few years ago flew in to NY on vacation and decided to get a 1:1 with Heather Hardy. Contacting her was very easy and she got back to me pretty quickly. I am an amateur boxer and I really enjoyed working with her, she gave sound advice and kept it real whenever my jab was garbage lol. I enjoyed the drills and mitt work we did. I bought some shirts as well since this gym is legendary. Whenever I fly into NY I make sure to visit Gleason's to get some bag work or a workout in. read more

I started working out there when it was in Manhattan near Madison Square Garden. When they moved to Brooklyn-Dumbo, I went with them. I won the New York Golden Gloves Heavyweight division representing Gleasons's boxing gym and then started my professional boxing career there. Before the gym, I have been training with Darryl Pierre. He is one of many trainers at Gleason's Gym, but I highly recommend him. For the past month (when the gym was closed), he has met with me in the park every day, even in the rain. As important as it is to have a gym with the necessary equipment, it's equally important to have a trainer that's dedicated to helping you improve as a boxer. One needs to understand that the proprietor of this establishment who is named Bruce Silverglade is all about making a profit without putting any money into his establishment.Items such as boxing gloves,hand wraps, and mouth guards are egregiously overpriced, the gym is kept unequivocally filthy with archaic equipment for ones utilization and I've seen fist fights break out here on occasion. Please do not take your valuables to this place as I have had an $80 Muay Thai jump rope and some iPods stolen from me instead of turned in at the front desk. If you are a female, please be aware that these trainers who are using this space make advances at their clients with Devon Cormack who is one of the instructors as one of the main culprits of this practice. read more

Legendary gym. All five of my fights took place there (2012 International Master's Tournament Champion and 2015 International Master's Tournament Finalist.) The food isn't the best for fighters, but they sure no how to bring in good shows. That, plus the quite normal celebrity sighting all make for why this place has the reputation that it does. Anybody with any love of boxing has heard of Gleason's gym. So, the day comes when I make a long overdue pilgrimage. It was EXACTLY what it is cracked up to be. Dirty. Beaten (yet perfectly serviceable) equipment. The rings had little blood stains drizzled all over them. Most of all, goddamn star level talent all around me. Watching some of the workouts in the ring was practically a boxing lesson in and of itself. I worked out on my own for about a half hour. Then, while chatting with the lady at the front desk (who treated me with the warmth and charm as I were a wayward nephew just returned), I asked how things work with the trainers. She said "Oh, just find one of those suckers that are sitting around doing nothing and ask them how much they want to get off their ass." I tell her that I'm primarily an MMA/Muay Thai guy looking to shape up some technical skill. She assures me that she has just the right person for me. She leads me to the back of the gym and points me towards an extremely relaxed looking gentleman eating a bag of chips and says "That's Chicken. He doesn't look it, but he's one of our best." Chicken and I agree a (very reasonable) price, and like Rocky, now I have my own personal Mickey. Chicken, chips still in hand, starts me off with some technical drills for my footwork. Ok, easy enough. Then he has me do them faster, and faster, and keeps going. My legs and calves are on fire. Then, he looks at me and nods approvingly. Now tells me to get my gloves on. He puts down the chips. Now shit gets real. Had hands down the best pad work session of my life. Chicken was merciless. My arms felt like jelly after all the pad work. Now he tells me that it's time to work on power. So, Chicken has me work a bag strapped to a wall. He sits down, picks the chips back up and starts chatting with one of the other trainers. Meanwhile, I'm pouring in sweat and my arms feel like they're melting. Figuring that Chicken was distracted, I started going a bit easy. Chicken, noticing immediately, just looked at me with a wordless glare of disapproval and asked "what happened to the heat [in my punches]?". After what seemed like an eternity, he calls me off the bag and tells me to take my gloves off. I'm thanking him for the excellent workout, thinking I'm done. Nope. Now he says it's the perfect time for conditioning. So, an eternity of pushups, squats and crunches ensues. After all that is done, now I'm a free man. Chicken finally cracks a smile tells me that he put me through a lot more than what the average walk-in can do because he saw I could handle it, and he was having good time working with me since he really liked the amount of power I was throwing. After hobbling home, I could barely move for two hours. I feel like I got put through a blender and badly taped back together. So, of course, I'm already texting Chicken about when he can train me again. A few months with this guy will turn anyone into a Spartan warrior. So, yes. Gleason's is exactly what it is cracked up to be. No BS, no glitz, no fancy equipment, no gimmicks. It doesn't need any of that. It has the most badass fighters and trainers, which is exactly why it is the Mecca of boxing that it is. read more

Well to start off I love this gym and everyone in it , to me it's New York's too boxing gym , but lately management has been really weird !! Just to name a few incidents that's happen to me personally, yesterday on Jan 23 ,2021 I'm on my treadmill doing my normal work out when this Asian looking lady which seems to be running the management side of the gym come to me as tell's to stop running from the treadmill because I'm to heavy for it .. I mean I weight 210pounds .. (don't know if I was being judged on my weight while I'm inside a gym but ok). If the machines are too old to be in that gym then that's a hazardous problem why are they there in the first place.. don't gyms get inspections ? Another incident that happen the same day jan 23 ,2021 around 3:10 - 3:33 which left me traumatized .. I'm inside the Men's locker room getting changed to go home and the same Asian lady walks right into the men's room while me and 3 other men were getting dress with a phone in her hand to show a guy that was in there something on the phone ( are you serious ) first of all how does it even cross your mind to go into the men's locker , second what ever you had to show that man on the phone couldn't had waited till he came out ?? What is going on in there .. I didn't sleep at all just thinking wat I had walking in the woman's locker room i would've been in jail .. not cool .. that gym is amazing and the people in it as well just don't know what's going on with its management team but I hope They fix it ASAP because that gym has to much legacy for one person to mess up it's history .. read more

I've trained at three boxing gyms in NYC. I'm a white collar boxer. I enjoy the sport. I box two or three days a week. So keep that in mind as you read this. Gleason's Gym is one of the reasons I moved to Brooklyn. I'd heard about it while I lived in Seattle. One of the oldest boxing gyms in the United States. Mike Tyson, Muhammed Ali, big names. It was a little intimidating. Once I joined, the workout was fairly typical - heavy bags, speed bags, double-end bags, sparring. Pros: It's spacious. It's usually not hard to find space to train, even during busy times. There are four sparring rings, although one of them is dedicated to professional wrestling. The fee is pretty standard: around $90 per month for membership. The hours are decent. The best way to make progress is to work with a trainer, because unless you have your own gear, finding gloves, focus mitts, jump ropes, and miscellaneous gear can be challenging. They host amateur events, which are some of the most interesting, gut-level boxing matches you will ever watch. Cons: The atmosphere isn't very friendly to newcomers. It's probably a bit more welcoming to men than it is to women. The guy's bathroom is awful. I mean, really awful. I've been boxing for five years, so I don't expect a lot. The treadmills and exercise bikes are ancient. Some don't work. Trainers can be expensive: some are worth it, some aren't. They raise their rates arbitrarily and without warning. No AC, which means summers are VERY hot. The smell can be a little much, sometimes. For as much money as flows through the place with special events, I sometimes wondered if a coat of paint and one good scrub in the bathroom isn't too much to ask for. It's not a bad place to start boxing. If you can find a good trainer, that will make your experience. If you find a bad trainer, you'll quit and leave. A lot of the folks I knew there have moved over to other gyms since I've left. It was worth it to train there, and experience a piece of boxing history. You will see famous people walk through sometimes, and visit. I watched part of a rap video being filmed there. But overall I looked for a smaller, less famous gym where the people were friendlier, the trainers don't raise rates arbitrarily and the atmosphere was better. read more

This gym has gone really downhill since reopening. No speed bags available, no sparring allowed. They raised the membership fee to 110$ which I understand but I just don't see the gym being worth it at this point in time. Also youre basically on your own unless you decide to pay another 150-300$ a month for a trainer. I will say that before covid, the gym was a lot more useful and these new regulations just don't make it worth my money anymore. read more

I moved from Tribeca to Brooklyn, on Front St, just two blocks down from Gleason's. When I lived in Tribeca I went to Church Street Boxing which I still love, but it's way too easy for me to walk two blocks to go to Gleason's. My first impression of Gleason's was not great. It felt like when I was a kid and started at a new school. But a few months later Gleason's now feels like home. Like most boxing gyms in NYC, Gleason's is rough around the edges. It could be cleaner and more modern. But I like it just the way it is. And when you get to know the people that work here and the trainers and the history of the place, you realize just how legendary it is. read more

Great gym! Awesome history some press fights for huge fights take place there. It's a awesome place to go for a day or two when you want to change scenery of training. Only negative thing to say is kinda pricy monthly fee not including the trainer fee. Trainers can charge up to 300$ for a month. great if you are a business person who only uses boxing as a getaway sport not the place tho for young kids or teens or adults who want to really learn the art with it being affordable. If you are serious about boxing, I can't recommend this place enough. It can get a little expensive since you pay monthly dues plus training sessions with a coach. Your experience is also highly contingent upon your instructor--they all have different schools of thought. Some are new school who don't believe in pivoting as you throw crosses or hooks, while others who do. This gym does not offer any classes, so if you're looking for that, you ought to go elsewhere. Came here for a UFC fight workout event so the review is only for the gym environs. Definitely an old school type boxing gym with 5 rings and plenty of heavy bags and plenty of square footage. Convenient location (10 minute walk from F train York station) and in a nice neighborhood (Dumbo). Gleason's Gym, in Brooklyn, is the oldest active boxing gym in the USA and the mecca of boxing aficionados and box-fitness fanatics alike. Being boxing fit is probably one of the best feelings that you can achieve, and is available to all at Gleason's with female & male very qualified trainers. I paid a visit some time ago and I was kindly allowed to browse inside by the lovely front desk lady. Truth to be told, you feel like Jake La Motta (who trained there between 1949 and1951) is about to start his early morning routine any minute now. Fantastic, unpretentious and inspiring place, even for no boxing fans, this no-frills Rocky Balboa-esque joint worth a visit. Its Hall of Fame is as long as impressive with the likes of: Muhammad Ali, Mike Tyson, Victor Galindez, Carlos Monzon (Tyson's favourite old guard middleweight), Chris Eubank, Jake La Motta, Pipino Cuevas, Julio Cesar Chavez, Marvin Hagler, Charles 'Sonny' Liston, etc. Promise that when I move to Brooklyn I will get my membership pronto!!! ...no punch line needed for this review though ;-) read more

If you're looking for a comfortable, air conditioned place with a sauna that you can lounge at after a medium-impact workout, this is not going to be the place for you. This place smells bad, no a/c, and the whole place has cement floors so if you slip on some of the sweat that's usually on the floors and fall down, you're going to hurt something. Some of the free weights are even taped up with duct tape, and I'm pretty sure some of the members there are on parole. However, if you really want to learn how to box, you don't want to be in one of those cramped boxing gyms in manhattan where you're on top of everyone, and you want some really great trainers to work with you while not paying an arm and a leg, then this is the place for you. I've been going there for over a year and I've tried out a lot of other boxing gyms, but I personally like this one the best. It's big, there are 4 rings, 8 heavy bags, and plenty of room to jump rope. I work with Raul Frank and I really like his style. He makes me work, he sometimes teaches me some self-defense/street fighting stuff, and since he still fights sometimes he'll sometimes work out right along with me which is really fun. He will also spar with me and let me beat the crap out of him. Everyone is there to work out and leaves you alone, but everyone is really nice. It's amazing the confidence I have in myself now because of learning how to box, and I am NOT anybody that looks like I belong there at all. It's addictive tho, and absolutely the best workout I've ever had. I go 2 or 3 times a week and I still have my cupcakes when I want them and still look great because of the intensity of the workouts. I highly recommend this place, and Raul, if you want to lose weight, build confidence, punch stuff, or even just try something new. read more

it's been a while since i've gone there,due to the fact that a gym opened way closer to home,but man is this the place i shoulda stuck with.Gleasons is truly the only boxing gym you should ever go to.the first thing i felt when i walked in on that hot august day was a strong sense of pride,history,and that going here would give me the training i need to get into way better shape,and they definitely helped.the trainers are very helpful even if you aren't using one,they will point out what you are doing right or wrong as they are walking around.the only thing i can say bad about it is,i wish they never moved out of manhattan all those many years ago. read more

If you are serious about boxing, I hardly recommend coach Mike ( Michael Kozlowski) Best Coach of the year (2012), he is like a factory producing champions. Check his classes for Kids! Gleason's is awesome place for fight training and fitness. My girlfriend and I have started training here with the Fearless Fighting Program. Malin, Rodrigo and crew will keep you fighting fit. All aspects of martial arts are covered with these guys. Never boring and always challenging. Strength & conditioning, Boxing, Muay Thai, MMA. Its all here. I think there is also some offerings in Wing Chun. The knowledgeable trainers are friendly yet serious about their craft and getting you into shape. Don't expect a boutique gym here. Its Gleason's-the name speaks for itself: old-school blood, sweat and tears....and its great! The gym has lots of space and plenty of equipment to work with. The regulars and staff are very respectful toward everyone who comes through the door-guys, girls and kids. A great environment for those who are serious about training. read more

gleason's feels the most boxing gym-like of the boxing gyms i've been to. it seems like most of the people there know what they're doing. half the people there are shirtless and have like -5% body fat. even tho there are lots of people in there, the space is so big that it doesn't seem crowded. i met with a trainer (there's like 80 on staff) and he set up his own double end and speed bags for me. so i think you have to bring your own if you wanna practice those. my only "complaint" is i think the 30sec buzzer should be louder so i know how much more pain i have to endure. monthly fees for gleason's is lower than most of the other boxing gyms and average trainer is $35. justschoolit.com has a $60/mo promotion, expires some time in august. read more

Nothing comes close to Gleasons . As with anything you will get out what you put in but Gleasons has a remarkable group of trainers , and you should use a trainer , at least for the first few months. After that you will not want to stop so find one and listen to what they have to say and follow it . Pedro Saiz is a taskmaster but you will get in absolutely incredible shape and he Will teach you how to fight . There are others as well . As far as the gym goes , you are there to box and that is why Gleasons exists . Come to box and train , go else where for anything else. There is nothing else like Gleasons...........just an amazing place filled with dedicated athletes of all degrees, skills and backgrounds . I've been a member of Gleason's gym for over a year and have been training with the highly successful, former professional boxer, Raul Frank, during this time. The first time I entered Gleason's I knew it was a special place, magical in fact. I recall observing members workout in a way that I respected, but never thought I could achieve. Thanks to Raul, I feel the confidence I once thought was unattainable. Raul, even on my worst day, seems to have some sort of secret of how to get the very best from me. It also helps he is smart, funny and kind. Don't get me wrong, sometimes Raul's idea of kind means he will make you mad but that anger somehow turns into passion. That passion he ignites makes Raul unique. I feel fortunate to be a member of Gleason's and to be working with Raul Frank. Being a girl can be intimidating in a gym like Gleason's. I had been taking Malin Bey's Muay Thai class at another small Brooklyn gym for a year with my boyfriend, and suddenly we had to join Gleason's as our old gym cancelled that class. I was scared and a little bit reluctant to go to a 'true' boxing gym as my goal is not to be a fighter. As soon as I entered Gleason's, it felt awesome. Everybody is training 'for real', no checking yourself in the mirror or looking at the new chick. Everybody is giving their best and you kind of suck that energy and put it into your own routine. The MMA training program (Fearless) is very efficiently designed as it covers different aspects of the workout: martial arts, strengthening and conditioning, boxing with very professional and dedicated instructors. I couldn't like it more. Working out with Malin, who is a real master but yet, very personal, as well as with the rest of the team (One shot, Nico, Dan, Q, Rodrigo) is not only fun and challenging but it fills me with confidence and satisfaction. I've noticed that there are women of all ages, shapes and levels, really inspiring. So if you are a girl and are thinking about it, all I have to say is Go Girl! read more
