This is the second time using Paragon for my settlement but the first time working with Philip. He was very attentive and communicative especially while I was out of town for a lot of the pre-work. As far as the administrative team, I felt there could be some communication improvements. I left a message or two but never received calls back in order to get information I needed quickly. I used Paragon because they had good reviews and were close to where I was staying when I was closing on the house. Wow, I can not say enough about them. There were some complications with my situation and then again with the title. My situation was that it was a cash closing but I would need to get a loan about 6 months down the road. They immediately advised that I handle it in a way that I was not subject to a Maryland tax for a second time which I would have been if it was just handled as a full cash closing. Then there was an issue with a tiny piece of my lot having been oddly managed in the title work 50 years ago due to a community well. They knew how to draft documents for the seller and for me to manage this crazy title issue that they had pretty much never seen before (except another one that same week). It is the third house I have closed on in my life and normally there are no issues that pop up to surprise a title company. My past experience is title companies handle it in a pretty rote manner unprepared for the least surprise. I almost shut down the closing for a duplex in Denver when I refused to sign documents saying I would not rent out part of the property; no one knew how to handle such a "crazy" thing as the form documents not fitting the situation. Paragon, wow, wow, wow. First call in when I said it was cash but a loan down the road they immediately knew to save from a second Maryland taxing. When there was an oddity with the title they were fully engaged on the spot and able to draft appropriate documents. These are smart, fully engaged lawyers who really know what they are doing. Closing was okay, but I did have to wait around for awhile while the closer tried to contact the seller to sign some forms. I know it wasn't his fault the seller had not signed them, but shouldn't this have been done prior to my close? About a month out from closing I still had not received my settlement documents via e-mail. At closing, I had to sign a form stating I had received information on how to obtain these documents once the link was sent to me. I called Paragon and they told me someone was working on it and I would have them in 10 minutes. 30 minutes later there was still nothing in my inbox or spam folder and I had to call again. It just seems like they are always running behind. I will commend them on being very thorough at settlement with explaining the documents, as I first time home buyer I did appreciate that. read more

Title companies aren't generally the type of business I would think to rate, but Paragon really is above and beyond. In addition to getting everything done (despite the difficulty of working on a bank-owned property), Rob Rothstein was able to tell me quickly and concisely what every clause was that I was signing. It made the signing process a breeze. Paragon is the third title company I've used, and I can honestly say they're by far the best of the three. (I was a bit disturbed at a different title company, when I was reading over the documents and the woman helping me with the process said that usually it's quicker because people don't read the documents when they sign them.) I had a great experience with Paragon, especially compared to my awful lender. I was in a bit of a strange situation so I didn't exactly get to choose them as the buyer but I'm glad they were used. One thing to note-- I had to go to Bethesda, which was super inconvenient, for closing but they are opening up an office right downtown. Larissa Hardman was super responsive in sending us the documents, especially when my own lender wasn't giving me accurate numbres. Rob Rothstein was amazing and actually made closing fun. As a seller, I had no choice in settlement attorneys. As a buyer, you do have a choice, and you should use it to avoid this outfit. If they are a Paragon of anything, it is self-interest. The staff was unresponsive and did not provide settlement information without repeated requests. The lender payoff figures they sent to me one day before closing were obsolete. On the day of settlement, I was given the alternatives of settling with the incorrect figures or doing their job for them and providing the correct ones. Then they refused to reduce an outrageous charge of $195 to "overnight" a check to my lender. They also refused to remove charges for services which the lender was willing to provide and which the lender asked them not to charge for. I would never do business with this outfit again nor could I recommend them to anyone else. read more

Buying your first home is scary enough with the loan process all by itself. When you throw in the many other factors associated with buying a home, it's easy to find yourself overwhelmed. Paragon made it so easy for me throughout this entire process. They provided me with documents in which they had the names of the people involved in the transaction misspelled, they did not respond to inquiries as to whether or not they had received the documents that I sent, and they did not provide relevant information until I specifically requested it. I will admit that it was a complicated settlement, because the seller had a renter, there was a TOPA, and some other issues. I used Paragon at the request of the seller, because of the TOPA, but regretted that decision at several points. On several points during the purchase process I was forced to listen to a rather lengthy sales pitch about how important I was as a customer but if I asked a question I was told how the staff was busy, and my question was silly, but they would make a special consideration for me. This happened on the three occasions I asked what I thought was a relatively straightforward questions. After the third question I was on the receiving end of a somewhat short toned admonition about how the staff was really competent and that by asking questions I was implying they didn't know how to do their jobs. Apparently these people are particularly insecure. Also, the property I purchased was in DC, they would not file the homestead exemption on my behalf, they handed me a partially filled in form at the settlement table and told me I had to file it. I would not recommend this office for any legal service. read more

I had a horrible experience with Paragon Title. They were asking me to sign papers with figures I didn't think were correct, and then threatening me that if I didn't sign, I would be sued. The owner of the company kept emailing and calling me and then had his brother, who said he was an attorney, do the same. They acted like they were impartial, yet were putting a huge amount of pressure on me to sign things saying they were correct, when I didn't believe they were. This should NOT be the role of a title company. I think they do business with the real estate agents on a regular basis, so they were doing whatever the agents wanted, and of course they just wanted their money. I would advise anyone to steer clear of these guys, they seemed very corrupt. I've had much better experiences with other title companies. read more
