Pappa Special Biryani Rice with Sambal eggplant, fried chicken and Sambal prawns (left), Nasi Lemak with curry chicken (right)

I came here for some Malaysian food when I traveled to Sydney recently. I must confess though prior to coming to this restaurant, I wasn't a regular Malaysian food diner. But PappaRich Malaysian Delights did a pretty good job in executing this south Asian cuisine. We tried their freshly baked Hainan bread served with butter and this coconut jam thing called Kaya. It was so yummy! It was the second best thing after the Condensed milk on toast! Next time though, I'd order the bread instead of the toast so I could really soak the bread into the egg yolk. I also tried their Pappa Special Biryani Rice with Sambal eggplant, fried chicken and Sambal prawns and Nasi Lemak with curry chicken. The Nasi Lemak had a very rich coconut fragrance whereas the Biryani rice was a bit on the drier side for me. The portion was very filling and at a reasonable price. Environment: the place was very spacious, bright and clean. They could accommodate small groups and also larger groups. They have a glass window that separates the dining area and the kitchen, so you could also take a peek at how they prepare your food. I find this to be a very family-friendly restaurant.

Papa Rich is a restaurant well known for its Malaysian cusine. There are stores scarttered around Sydney for you to get your Malaysian fix. The restaurant it pretty straight forward, clean and modern wth a number of tables to cater for hungry puntes. The food at Papparich is traditional Malaysian fare with plenty of flavour at a reasonable price. All of my favourites are on the menu including the light fluffy roti as well as nasi lemak which is an assortment of rice, peauts, sambal and a curry. The beef rendang is my usual go to. They also have a number of Malaysian drinks which certainly are colourful and almost dessert like, actually I would consder them to be a dessert. Sweet with jelly and sugar syrup. There are also other options availalable if you don't feel like a sweet drink, try one of their teas. Our friends and I shared a range of tasty bites including the satay skewers, chicken being the pick. There were dumplings too, as well kway teow: a simple tasty hawker style noodle dish. The roti canai is always a favourite also served hawker style on a steel tray with a finger lickin chicken curry. Tear off a bit of roti dip it in the sambal and use it to grab a piece of chicken curry, a great hands on dining experience.

For a place with such long queues at night, this place is ridiculously mediocre. I mean, MEDIOCRE. We arrived around lunchtime (come during lunch, no wait) and were seated promptly...though a queue formed shortly after we sat down. Why? I don't understand? Do Sydneysiders love lining up for mediocre Malaysian food, a la Mamak? When you sit down you write in your order on a piece of paper and then buzz the waiter/waitress. The menu is pretty extensive...but with roti on the first few pages you have to try the roti right? I ordered the roti and the laksa, gf ordered another noodle dish. Roti was OK, not the softest or flakiest but the dipping sauces were incredible. Roti is better at Mamak but the sauces are better here. The laksa has great addons (eggplant!) but the broth is pretty bland. It tasted alright initially, but after a few bites the broth was just bland and tasteless. I definitely would probably come back for the roti, but I wouldn't wait longer than 10 minutes in line...not worth it.

It's pretty exciting going to a bustling new restaurant the first weekend that it's open. We were super excited, being huge fans of Malacca Straits up the road (also Malaysian) and had been waiting for Pappa to open for months now. But ultimately I was pretty disappointed. Their much touted roti was too fluffy and pastry-like for my tastes. Two of our meals (both roti based in neat little compartmentalised dishes weee!) were average, but the Biryani red chicken was delicious. Perhaps I'll go again and get more like the red chicken and in which case I'll have to upgrade my score, but with only 1/3 being flavoursome, this is all it'll get for now. Lovely staff and very attentive service however.

I ordered biryani with beef rendang and sambal prawns with small chicken curry on the side. Well, overall the dish is good but don't have a wow factor that want you up come back for more. For my personal taste, the green cardamom is overpowering on biryani, but saying that might be the recipes that chef agree to that taste. Curry chicken used a lot of white pepper that burnt your tongue after you taste this dish. Sambal prawn lack of richness, sweet and spicy as sambal should be. However the freshness of the drink, the sweetness of lychee and coconut jelly with a little acidity from the mango purée is a drink that you must try!

Popped into PappaRich with my husband on my way home from work because I wanted to compare the raita here against mamak. Again, there is a massive line outside but it's really deceiving because it's very fast. Menu looks like the typical Malaysian flair with noodles, chicken, laksas and my favourite... The drinks page! You have a ton to choose from and tonight was a regular coffee kind of day. They do not mess around, I wanted to TALK ABOUT SOME STUFF when I had finished my cup. Hahhaha. Now, compared to mamak this place comes in second. The dipping curries just weren't as rich, but I think the flakiness of the dough was excellent. Will be back to try laksa soon .

Ridiculously good deep fried chicken skin. And tea.

I went to the franchise in Canberra and was more impressed there than here. Perhaps that's because I was used to the nature of service by the time I tried this one. However, both have very similar service times - damn fast. The food is tasty and it's very filling. I'll definitely avoid anything with anchovies in it next time though as it was my first time with Malay cuisine and what anchovies mean to Malay food. Doesn't gel well with me, too used to how the Italians do them instead. Have to agree with a bit pricey. The food is good, but it feels like it should be less expensive than what it is. Perhaps I'm used to less expensive Vietnamese places.

This dish is code W02 in the menu but I just forgot what it's called. Personally, I would give it 3.5/5.

If you want to have a nice authentic Malaysian dishes, this restaurant is the place to be. The ambience is relaxing and the service is top notch. There's a pencil and paper on the table and you can just write down your order and make comments how you want it. It's a small thing but it makes a difference because it reduces the complication of your order. There's also a buzzer on the table so that if you're ready to give them your order or if you want something else. Sometimes at night, there's a long queue especially weekends but from my experience, I never waited long and it's definitely worth it.

This is my third visit to this particular venue. And I keep coming back! It is now my goto Malaysian place followed closely by Jimmy's Recipe at The Galleries. Chicken chop with curry sauce - fricken incredible! Juicy on inside and crispy on outside. The most perfect concoction of curry goodness slipped right on top. Nothing goes soggy, all the way through the experience! Rice has a beautifully tangy spice mixed through it (probably some cardamom in there somewhere). Chicken laksa - right up there with Tamesek at Parramatta and The Malaya at King Street Wharf. Not dumbed down in any way. Roti Canai - not as good as Mamak's, but a worthy contender... and the dhal and curry sauce is better! Try the Tropical Lime drinks (back page of menu) .... lychee ice magicness with a scoop of quality vanilla ice cream on top! This place would have to be best Malaysian in Sydney I reckon!

Our Cantonese heritage taste buds from Hawai'i would have been happy with steaming hot bowls of soup noodles and dumplings after our long travel day. Still, I suggested to my husband that we eat a familiar Asian cuisine we wouldn't usually get back home; hence, Malaysian & Nyonya were the answer. I had bookmarked Ho Jiak Haymarket because it was in the Chinatown neighborhood, where we also planned to explore, and it was about a 15-minute walk from there. We were certainly glad that we didn't have to wait in line to get in, as Google Maps photos show. We were seated immediately and took a few minutes to scroll through their extensive menu, then chose items from the Lunch Specials Menu. The Lunch Specials Menu included an entrée (choose from 8 selections) and a beverage (non-alcoholic or alcoholic) for A$25 or around $17 USD. FOOD: -Hainan Chicken Rice + Teh Tarik (cold): I received a half slow-poached chicken, fragrant rice cooked in chicken broth, and a bowl of chicken broth. The chicken was garnished with fresh cucumber slices, bean sprouts, and cilantro. Also, it was served with chili sauce, soy sauce, and finely chopped ginger root and garlic. The tender poached chicken was juicy, non-greasy, and tasty. This dish was a healthy and toothsome meal. Teh Tarik is a Malaysian "pulled or shaken" milk tea, and I requested it in the cold or iced style because the outside temperature was quite hot. The Teh Tarik was refreshing, thirst-quenching, and flavorful. A$25 -Char Hor Fun + House Beer (Asahi Dry 330 ml): My husband selected this dish, but didn't know what to expect as he doesn't read or speak Chinese. Admittedly, my limited reading of Chinese characters suggested that this dish might be similar to my "usual" Cantonese childhood comfort food, Wat Tan Hor. When the Char Hor Fun was delivered to our table, I immediately recognized it as Wat Tan Hor, except that the egg sauce contained tender pork slices, shrimp, green vegetables, fish cake, and, I think, chunks of fish. The flat, broad rice noodles were stir-fried in soy sauce for additional seasoning, and we could tell the wok heat was perfect because there were very few broken noodles. When the server brought the House Beer, my husband was pleasantly surprised to receive an icy cold bottle of Asahi Dry. A$25 -Loh Bak: We selected this appetizer because of its description and our pork-leaning taste buds. Loh Bak is five-spiced pork jowl rolls wrapped in bean curd skin and deep-fried. We were thinking these pork jowl rolls would surely whet our appetites, and the deep-fried rolls didn't disappoint. A$20 This restaurant was lively, friendly, and clean with authentic-tasting Malaysian and Nyonya flavors. The service was prompt, amicable, and helpful.

I was dining solo so I was seated immediately, a plus since it was dinner time. The vibe gives off mom and pop shop where you can enjoy home cooked dishes. Honestly, the menu is a tad bit overwhelming but I opted for one of the signature dishes, Char Koay Teow -- spicy stir fried flat rice noodles with seafood & Chinese sausage. It reminded me of Pad See Ew prolly because of the flat noodles! It's good but the portions were heaping so the more I ate it, it became saltier with every bite. Something to take note when ordering, as the plates are for sharing. I think what attributed to the 3-star review was for the mixup/snafu. They accidentally sent my order to another table even though I got there before the other party. They apologized profusely, and I saw all the commotion happen in the kitchen and staff to get it all sorted out.. but not gonna lie -- that still put a damper to my experience. I also ate my chicken curry filled roti (which was phenomenal btw) since my main order took longer to remake after the other table touched the order that was meant for my table. Anyway! I do appreciate the staff for checking in and asking how I liked the dishes. Pro-tip, you don't need to ask for a check/bill, you can simply pay up at the counter. I should definitely stuck with my gut to get the laksa. Oh well, another opportunity to come back I guess!

We had to remind staff again before it finally arrived. There was no true concern shown for the bad service either. The staff shrugged their shoulders going 'you can see how busy we are.' One dish took around 30 minutes, while the second took close to an hour. Throughout the meal there was little to no attentiveness from staff and the service felt quite unfriendly overall. For the price point, there are far better dining experiences in Sydney. Even if the food itself is good, making customers wait this long completely impacts the experience and makes it difficult to enjoy the meal by the time it arrives. Unfortunately wouldn't return. Makes me wonder if they are racist.
