Roti Canai with Curry and Sambar
    Lou E.

Have to upgrade our review from last year. Last year we were a bit disappointed. Service lacked. But this year it elevated itself to a rating of 5. We arrived after the lunch hour rush and only stood inline a few minutes. The place was still packed to the rims. We ordered: - Roti Canai - a plain roti served with a curry sauce and a sambal sauce. It arrived and it was beautiful. Wish we would have had it last year. It was piping hot, flakey on the outside and warm and soft on the inside. Neither of us could decide what to dip them in. The curry or the sambal. - Roti Kaya - roti stuffed with pandas and coconut. We opted for the savory dish versus the sweet dish and it also was served with curry sauce and sambal. It arrived right after the Roti Canai and was also warm and inviting. Could have been dessert. - Beef Satay with a Peanut Sauce - the dish was on the WOW factor. Some of the best beef satay we have ever had. Cooked through and almost like a jerky but very soft and not as chewy. We dipped in the peanut sauce that in itself could have been eaten with a spoon. We then wrapped some in the plain roti and dipped in the curry. Another winner. Service was great. Food arrived within a reasonable time. We were warned that the satay would take a little longer and it was really only a little longer. Glad it didn't deter our ordering it. Prices are extremely reasonable. No reservations taken. Just get inline and enjoy the atmosphere. Highly recommend.

Always with a long queue to get in, which means they have good food. Indeed, they do. This authentic Malaysian restaurant is popular among locals and tourists alike. It's always packed and noisy. We ordered the roti bom, chicken and beef satay, ayam goreng and kangkung belacan. They were all delicious. It's definitely worth visiting when you're in the area.

Mamak is a casual spot, popular with locals and tourists alike, but the line moves quickly as others have mentioned. We enjoyed everything we had here! Standouts for me included the roti (must-have!) and the rojak (a unique take!). The nasi lemak was also very good. While it looked like any other nasi lemak, somehow it was very addictive; I kept wanting more. Chendol is something that's nostalgic to me, and this hit the spot.

The line to be seated was long. As first we were debating if we should wait or try another place. We decided to wait and we are so glad we did. The line moved pretty quickly. The flavor of the food was good but the curry was spicy and there was not an option for mild. They quoted us a time of 45 mins for preparation but it was closer to 15mins. The fried chicken was very crispy and it had a nice flavor. The kabobs were good. I enjoyed the chicken over the beef. Surprisingly I learned that the peanut sauce seems to take away some of the spiciness of the curry. The fried rice was ok. The Kari Ayam was spicy and there were only about three small pieces of chicken. The roti was good and paired with the curry and sambal sauce. Note, if you pay cash they will give you a 5%

The original and the best This is still the best roti in Australia!! And a big thumbs up for the chicken curry and the fish curry (mackerel), although they could have been a bit hotter - they were served lukewarm. Mamak should be on everyone's must do list for Sydney! 14/04/2022 Still the best roti in Australia There's a reason why there's a queue outside the restaurant every night! Every dish we ordered was well-cooked and presented! The roti is amazing - fresh, fluffy and crispy! 11/09/2017 Malaysian Hawker food at its best! This is Malaysian hawker food at its best!! We visit Mamak every time we visit Sydney and there is always a queue - even on Monday nights!! The food is really authentic - a perfect fusion of Indian, Malay and Chinese flavours - and all the dishes we have tried are excellent. The roti is the best we have eaten in Australia - and it's great to watch the chefs at the front of the restaurant making the roti and murtabak!

Walked in to a busy scene. I ordered the Kari Sayur (vegan) take away. The curry was flavorful with potatoes, carrots, eggplant, green beans. The price is reasonable at AU$22.00. Friendly service.

I'd always seen the queue outside Mamak, and read many good reviews, so I decided to try it. The restaurant is narrow and deep, mostly picnic style tables. You order and pay via a QR code on the table. I ordered lamb Murtabak, chicken satay and spicy lamb curry. I had hoped the Murtabak and satay would come out first, but it doesn't work that way here. The servers bring dishes as they're prepared. As the Roti is very popular and takes time, it tends to come along late in the meal. The curry was good, lots of tender chunks of lamb and nicely presented. I did find the sauce quite thin and bland. The chicken satay was also rather bland and not very warm. The peanut sauce was excellent. The real star of the show was the lamb Murtabak. The roti was thin and delicate, the lamb stuffing spicy and flavorful. If I decide to wait in the queue to eat here again, I'd stick to the roti. It's a meal in itself, and worth the wait. The curry and satay are OK, but not great. The roti is well worth a visit.

Epic Roti here! Their regular roti was beautifully executed. You can watch the roti chef roll out the dough and make it at the window. It was crispy and nicely "poofed". The dessert Roti was superrrrrr crispy and fun to eat. It was so thin and crispy. I'm curious as to how it's made and formed into the cone! Fried chicken: this one was nicely seasoned, juicy inside, crispy outside, sugary on the under side. One of my top ranked fried chickens. Very delish! Hefty price for 1 piece though - $6! Chicken curry: curry was flavorful. Roti with egg: good but not crispy, flaky like the plain Roti. Service was ok. Our foreign credit card didn't work online so had to get up, go to the counter to order. Restaurant was nice and clean.

Stopped by before the dinner rush at around 3:30pm and was able to be seated right away (the place was still extremely busy though). We were excited to have some Malaysian food, especially since it was highly rated online. We opted for the Roti and Mixed Satay set. The roti was definitely good but I think it is a bit overhyped. On the other hand, I really enjoyed the satay! The meat was super tender and the sauce was what made the dish! Overall a really solid place to get some delicious Malaysian food in the area!

Great little hole in the wall Malay place. Wonder Rotis, both savory and sweet...and great home-made sauces too. I've not had anything this good since Los Angeles or Singapore. Ordered the Roti Canai, Rojak dakad and beef satay sticks. 5 star for the Rojak and Roti, and the sauces. 3 star for beef satay, as the beef was very tough and way over cooked. However the dipping sauce was great. Wish I had more room, as I would love to have tried the dessert roti.

This place is always soooo crowded. If you see a long line it's most likely this place. We came 5 minutes before it was opened and got seated right away before the line started. Food came out decently fast. Thought this place was just okay considering how much hype this place gets.

Good tastings variety of roti. Service was relatively fast. It was a Friday night and there were 6 of us so it was a bit of a challenge to get seats. The place was clean and loud. Friendly staff.

The pictures and reviews looked good, so I decided to check it out. You can go straight to the counter and place your order. You have the option of eating in or taking it to-go. I ordered the Nasi Lemak. As advertised on their menu, it's their signature dish. This is Malaysia's national dish, it's a fragrant coconut rice dish served with peanuts, crispy anchovies and pickled vegetables. I got it with beef rendang. Instead of beef, you have the option to get it with chicken curry. I never had Malaysian food before, but this breakfast dish was very similar to what Taiwanese eat. I thought it was not bad. I'm pretty sure it's good for Sydney and you would most definitely get something better at Malaysia. If you're eating in, once you're done, you can bring your plates and utensils to the counter.

Within 30 minutes after checking into our hotel room, we "hit the ground running" and headed…read moredirectly to Ho Jiak Malaysian Grill & Nyonya House in Haymarket since we were hungry and craving Chinese comfort food. Our Cantonese heritage taste buds from Hawai'i would have been happy with steaming hot bowls of soup noodles and dumplings after our long travel day. Still, I suggested to my husband that we eat a familiar Asian cuisine we wouldn't usually get back home; hence, Malaysian & Nyonya were the answer. I had bookmarked Ho Jiak Haymarket because it was in the Chinatown neighborhood, where we also planned to explore, and it was about a 15-minute walk from there. We were certainly glad that we didn't have to wait in line to get in, as Google Maps photos show. We were seated immediately and took a few minutes to scroll through their extensive menu, then chose items from the Lunch Specials Menu. The Lunch Specials Menu included an entrée (choose from 8 selections) and a beverage (non-alcoholic or alcoholic) for A$25 or around $17 USD. FOOD: -Hainan Chicken Rice + Teh Tarik (cold): I received a half slow-poached chicken, fragrant rice cooked in chicken broth, and a bowl of chicken broth. The chicken was garnished with fresh cucumber slices, bean sprouts, and cilantro. Also, it was served with chili sauce, soy sauce, and finely chopped ginger root and garlic. The tender poached chicken was juicy, non-greasy, and tasty. This dish was a healthy and toothsome meal. Teh Tarik is a Malaysian "pulled or shaken" milk tea, and I requested it in the cold or iced style because the outside temperature was quite hot. The Teh Tarik was refreshing, thirst-quenching, and flavorful. A$25 -Char Hor Fun + House Beer (Asahi Dry 330 ml): My husband selected this dish, but didn't know what to expect as he doesn't read or speak Chinese. Admittedly, my limited reading of Chinese characters suggested that this dish might be similar to my "usual" Cantonese childhood comfort food, Wat Tan Hor. When the Char Hor Fun was delivered to our table, I immediately recognized it as Wat Tan Hor, except that the egg sauce contained tender pork slices, shrimp, green vegetables, fish cake, and, I think, chunks of fish. The flat, broad rice noodles were stir-fried in soy sauce for additional seasoning, and we could tell the wok heat was perfect because there were very few broken noodles. When the server brought the House Beer, my husband was pleasantly surprised to receive an icy cold bottle of Asahi Dry. A$25 -Loh Bak: We selected this appetizer because of its description and our pork-leaning taste buds. Loh Bak is five-spiced pork jowl rolls wrapped in bean curd skin and deep-fried. We were thinking these pork jowl rolls would surely whet our appetites, and the deep-fried rolls didn't disappoint. A$20 This restaurant was lively, friendly, and clean with authentic-tasting Malaysian and Nyonya flavors. The service was prompt, amicable, and helpful.

I was dining solo so I was seated immediately, a plus since it was dinner time. The vibe gives off mom and pop shop where you can enjoy home cooked dishes. Honestly, the menu is a tad bit overwhelming but I opted for one of the signature dishes, Char Koay Teow -- spicy stir fried flat rice noodles with seafood & Chinese sausage. It reminded me of Pad See Ew prolly because of the flat noodles! It's good but the portions were heaping so the more I ate it, it became saltier with every bite. Something to take note when ordering, as the plates are for sharing. I think what attributed to the 3-star review was for the mixup/snafu. They accidentally sent my order to another table even though I got there before the other party. They apologized profusely, and I saw all the commotion happen in the kitchen and staff to get it all sorted out.. but not gonna lie -- that still put a damper to my experience. I also ate my chicken curry filled roti (which was phenomenal btw) since my main order took longer to remake after the other table touched the order that was meant for my table. Anyway! I do appreciate the staff for checking in and asking how I liked the dishes. Pro-tip, you don't need to ask for a check/bill, you can simply pay up at the counter. I should definitely stuck with my gut to get the laksa. Oh well, another opportunity to come back I guess!
