The soup dumplings here were pretty good but all the other foods were just okay and very expensive. It's probably because it's in the basement floor of a mall but I'd skip it for Chinatown. The beef dish I got was that weird spongey textured beef Chinese restaurants have and it was gross. The pork belly dish was good but a very small portion for how pricey it was.

New Shanghai is a Shanghainese restaurant chain in Sydney. The food and ambiance here is comparable to eating at Din Tai Fung. This branch is located in the heart of the Sydney CBD at Westfield Sydney. The restaurant is quite new having only opened last year. It is located on Level 1 which is one floor down from street level. It is a spacious spot and the interior is beautifully modern as it is decked with red lanterns on top. There are several seating areas here. The bar is on your left and the main dining area is on your right. But what drew me in was that the restaurant has a dumpling bar in which you can watch while the chefs are making dumplings through the window which makes for great food entertainment. While eating Cantonese dim sum is expensive in Sydney, I found the pricing for Shanghainese dim sum here to be in line or less than I would pay at Din Tai Fung in Seattle when you factor in the exchange rate. Had a weekend lunch here and ordered several dishes. My item selection consisted of an order of crab meat xiao long bao ($12), a pork ribs rice dumpling ($4.90) and pork belly buns ($6.60). I enjoyed everything that I tried here. The xiao long bao was nice and juicy with a good amount of soup inside each dumpling. Though the crab accentuates this dish as it gives it a sweeter flavor. The rice dumpling was a special as it was Dragon Boat Festival season. It didn't disappoint as the pork ribs inside were tender. Continuing the porkfest theme were the pork belly buns. I like the inclusion of a slice of cucumber with hoisin sauce on top as it helped to balance the dish out. Had a great meal at New Shanghai. The menu selection and prices here are more reasonable than the Din Tai Fung Dumpling Bar upstairs in the food court area. And when you add in the ambiance particularly the dumpling bar feature, it seems like a no brainer to eat here instead of at DTF.

Phenomenal Shanghainese food. A bit difficult to find if you're not familiar with the area, but totally worth the journey. What we ordered for the table: -Garlic Cucumbers -Drunken Chicken -Pork Soup Dumplings -Gyoza -Pan Fried Soup Dumplings -Soft Shell Crab -Beef Noodle Soup -Scallion Tossed Dry Noodles Everything was delicious, but we were blown away by the dumplings. They're made to order and each juicy bite offers an explosion of flavor. Soft shell crab was larger than expected, which is great if you know anything about ordering them. Scallion noodles was probably my personal favorite as I demolished them even though I was already full.

Consistently good. The xiao long bao and pan fried pork buns are a must order. Recently discovered the rice cakes with XO sauce... delicious. Their prawn wonton in chilli oil is not as good as others. We've never had an issue getting a table although we've never gone during peak times. The space is also large which is great for our pram.

Lynn Shanghai and DTF do fantastic spicy pork and prawn wontons. They also do amazing Xiao Long Bao. New Shanghai has an immediate advantage over Lynn Shanghai - it didn't burn down on Australia Day. New Shanghai's wontons are the bigger than DTF's but the sauce is milder. Before it burnt down Lynn Shanghai had fantastic sauce on their wontons with peanuts and chilli oil and a chewy pulpy thing that I never identified (possibly tamarind but drier). DTF's spicy wontons are smaller and you get less of them, but their sauce is the best by a mile. And you can get them with 'dry noodles' which aren't dry. I'm so confused.

Well, second day in a row that I come back to have lunch at this restaurant. Yesterday experience was good, and I like the ambience in this place, so maybe that's the things that keep me want to experience more. I had crab meat Xiao long Bao and steamed "lions head" meat ball in broth, crab meat and Chinese chestnut. Over all was really good. Meat ball was soft in texture, I do believe the mixed pork, crab and chestnuts together in a meat ball pattie. Honestly need more chestnut to give you a crunchy texture on the meat ball, but that's my personal opinion. Today, I ordered chicken and corn soup as an entree and pan fried crab meat and pork bun. Nice soup base and some shredded chicken thigh fillet scattered on the soup, to be honest nothing fancy but good enough to warm your tummy and get your palate going for the next dish. Pan fried bun came in 8 pcs served ( lucky Chinese number), with sprinkles of black sesame on top m, unfortunately buns a bit thick as the need to hold some soup inside, but taste wise it was beautiful, crunchy texture on the bottom of the buns, I like it very much!

The glossy red with surrounding dark timber makes it hard to reconcile that you are actually in the City's Westfield Centre. This illusion only happens with the feel as there is no illusion about the food - it is wonderful. Excellent dumplings are a fine way to start the meal. The succulent pork ribs were a hit, and so too, the Mapo Tofu....it comes with ground pork and has a the nice chilli flavouring. The hot and sour pork was delicious, and everyone enjoyed the salt and pepper prawns. Pork bun was tasty. Sauteed beans added a different set of flavours. There is no doubt to really enjoy the range of dishes, dining with at least four people is a minimum starting number to get to really appreciate how good the food is. Service is efficient and helpful until all is plates are on the table - a little 'post delivery' follow up would improve the experience. We had to go and seek server support to refill water and tea needs. Good value for money and the dumplings, indeed the food is great. Just forget you are sitting underneath the Westfield Centre......and you will enjoy the experience.

No no no, seriously not good. Very average. Ordered through Foodora, got the Marinated Pork Ribs, Shepherd's Purse & Pork Wontons & Zha Jiang Noodles. I'm not sure if it's because it was delivery, it just wasn't great. Everything was served separately, which is fine, but had to mix everything. The taste was not good, just so so average. The Pork Ribs was the only one that was half-way decent. I couldn't even finish it though. Really disappointed :( I missed out on my work dinner at Sea Bay so was craving good food, sigh. Total $26.50

This New Shanghai is actually the best. It is genuinely the best that I have had in Sydney. This is in comparison to the many places I've tried in Eastwood and Ashfield, as well as places in Hong Kong. New Shanghai in Westfield Pitt St, is like 11/10. Well, we ordered 3 dishes between 2 people for lunch and were expecting to take away the remainder... but there was no remainder to take home and we were left in a food coma for the rest of the night. I had to try the pork buns and xiao long bao; they're just staples of the Shanghainese cuisine I'd say. Firstly, id like to point out that there were instructions on how to eat the dumplings on the menu hahaha. Probably due to the unexperienced dumpling eaters burning them self from the scolding hot soup inside the dumplings. The pork buns were ohhhhh so juicy. The pork was so juicy mannnn and the soup inside was UGH to die for (or to burn my mouth for). The pan fried base of the bun was perfect. Just enough crunch on the base; not drenched in oil, and not soggy. The dough of the bun was just right in thickness and "fluffiness" and didn't overwhelm the entirety of the bun. The xiao long bao. Pls. Give me more. I want more. Maybe next time I'll only purely order XLB and nothing else. God the dumpling wrapping was soooo thin and delicate; makes it so easy to just shove down my throat straight into the stomach. The insides, once again, on point 11/10. I cant describe it, it's just so juicy and filled with the boiling goodness. The Noodles were also quite nice. I think the noodles are hand made? Perfect texture and nice soup, but overall; the pork buns and XLB were the standouts. I'll be back so very so so very very soon :D Prepare the XLB for me pls

The restaurant had no more than four parties when we arrived for a late dinner on a Monday night around 8pm. Then again, Lynn isn't very easy to spot if you're strolling along Castlereagh St, which may explain the emptiness. It's pretty standard to order xiao long baos at a Shanghainese restaurant. So of course, we got one order of #701 XLBs, along with #801 Shanghai Noodles with Shredded Pork and Vegetables and #805 Vegetable and Pork Wontons in Noodles with Hot and Spicy Sauce. The XLBs weren't amazing. The pork meat was bland, and the soup was very light and not as flavorful as I hoped. However, the skin was perfect: delicate and thin, yet sturdy enough to hold the meat and soup, and it had good texture. The Shanghai noodles weren't special either. I liked the variety of veggies and pork, but the dish overall needed more salt as it was tasteless and lacked any depth. The wontons and noodles in a hot and spicy sauce was a very heavy dish. Noodles had a very thick, starchy texture. Wontons were generously stuffed with a large amount of filling, mainly shredded vegetables because I didn't taste the pork, and the skin was too thick and chewy. The sauce was extremely spicy, and it irked me when we weren't automatically given water refills when our glasses were clearly empty. Lynn is a huge restaurant, so it can accommodate large groups. It's also very clean and modern. Service wasn't rude, but they certainly weren't attentive either. The only reason we tried this place was because they had a takeaway menu available at our hotel. The menu looked promising, but after dining here, we left unimpressed.

Well, as much as I like the dumplings at DTF, I don't think they're THE BEST EVER...and not for the price you pay. So I started a search on other soup dumplings in the city and came across Lynn Shanghai, as it opened up relatively recently. The place is a little hard to find, the sign is small and it's actually inside a building so you have to walk through a lobby to get into the restaurant. The building is located next to the Scientology building (why, I don't know) and that's all you need to know to find it. The place is a lot bigger than anticipated, and there's an open kitchen so you can see the dumplings and food being made. The chefs all wear masks so you can feel relieved you aren't getting stank breath on your food. The menu is rather extensive and offers all sorts of cuisine from Shanghai, but I came for the dumplings. Pan fried and steamed please. For $8.80, you get 6 dumplings...not the cheapest but cheaper than DTF and just as good...if not BETTER. Seriously, I don't know what the fuss is about DTF, the dumplings are pretty small and while tasty, they're not that tasty. There also isn't much of a wait for this place as it's still relatively new, so if you're feening for some soup dumplings and don't want to queue at DTF, this is the place to go. I haven't been back to DTF since.
