Been quite lucky to have come to this newly renovated restaurant. It was an invite from another company I write for, and I sat down in one of the private rooms with 11 other people from the media. To cut a long story short, we were spoilt - incredibly spoilt. The food kept coming in abundance, and two hours later we all headed to the nearby train station. The evening began with a platter of cold dishes...traditional Shanghainese food at its best. The tofu was the hit on this dish - moist, filling and oh so flavoursome. Kelp...yummy. The seaweed complimented the cold dishes nicely. The fried stuff was the natural attraction - their spring rolls and fried pork dumplings - their vegetarian dumplings weren't too bad either. Some interesting dishes included prawn and egg. The powdery coating brought an interesting taste sensation and soft texture to the mouth. The peking duck pancakes were a treat, although they were a bit messy to prepare. A flat plate and a thicker bread base would have been better for that. Otherwise the duck was just stunning. I will never forget the fried ice cream - take a bite and the batter isn't too crispy. A lemon sponge cake like taste arrives with ice cream that barely melts. Needed to share. On a Wednesday night, the restaurant was busy as.

New Shanghai is an extremely popular restaurant serving modern Shanghai cusine, hence the name. With multiple restaurants around Sydney including Chatswood, the city and Ashfield. We visited the Ashfield location on a busy Friday night, with people queuing to get their dumpling and bun fix. Once inside, the restaurant had a good atmosphere full of diners enjoying their meals. The decor set up to reflect a Shanghai dining experience, with a couple of rooms with plenty of seating. The service is efficient to ensure the wait for a table is not too long. The drinks menu is varied, with cocktails, beer, an decent wine list and spirits as well as a number of non alcoholic beverages. We sampled a cumquat and lemon drink which was nice and refreshing and a Tsing Tao beer. Why not, it was Friyay and perfect for the meal ahead. To say the menu is extensive is an understatement. It even had a key to show you signature dishes and vegetarian options. With plenty of options to keep you coming back for more, try to tick them off your list. We opted for meals that were indicated as signature dishes. Winter soup was the perfect start. The Shanghai tofu skin and pork roll in a supreme broth. A delicious and delicate broth with some veg and tasty wrapped parcels. New Shanghai is well known for their dumplings, we couldn't go past the xiao long bao. Always a favourite these steamed pork dumplings were particularly good. Sticking to etiquitte, placing the dumpling on the spoon piercing with the chopstick and adding soy sauce, vinegar and chilli oil to taste. The soup inside the dumpling was very flavoursome. The fried salt and pepper king brown mushrooms, a tasty vegetarian dish. Full of flavour and texture, very more-ish. Perfect with a Tsing Tao or two, maybe three. Another go to is the peking beef with steamed buns. Make your own New Shanghai style sliders. Grab one of the cloud like pillows of dough that are the steamed buns, fill with some beef and maybe some cucumber. Soooo goood and perfect to share if you don't get too protective after you try one. The serving size was very generous too. We loved New Shanghai with plenty of classics on offer, you can also find something new. New Shanghai also has a great atmosphere and sevice. We thank New Shanghai for their hospitality. It was great to see the staff in action during a peak period, very impressive. Can't wait to return to tick off some more of the menu.

I love this restaurant! It has a warm and welcoming decor and atmosphere. Affordable food with great tastes. Fast and efficient food prep to delivery. Love the pan fried pork bun! Everything in the menu tastes great so you won't worry about trying new things from the menu. It's a great place to go for lunch and dinner though the queue is sometimes too long..

Always busy, but worth the wait. My favourite go-to place for Xiao Long Bao . Everything was on point tonight, just except for when they brought out certain food last and by the time it came out we were really full! Highly recommend this place and I'll definitely will be returning. The staff was extremely helpful and lovely tonight! Well done team

If you're looking for authentic dumplings, I would not go further. New Shanghai is probably my favorite place to get Xiao Long Bao and pan fried dumplings. My mother is from Shang-Hai and was surprised that such a commercial restaurant retained the traditional Asian flavors. This place offers an enormous variety of food - Apart from the dumplings I highly recommend the snow pea & mushroom dish, as well as the sweet-sour fish. Although I am no fan of the sweet-sour combination, this is a popular local dish that I've been told is done quite well here.

New Shanghai is the Din Tai Fung of the inner west not to be mistaken by New Shanghai Night two doors away. It is probably the most popular restaurant in Ashfield with a line for lunch and dinner at any day of the week. The dumplings are handcrafted in the front window and the interior is surprisingly spacious and decorated with nice fittings that do not match the prices or the area. XIAO LONG BAO 8pcs $7.80 The wrap was thin with a nice texture. It held the filling and of course the delicious pork filling. It was of a good standard, served at the right temperature so no cooling time was required. PAN FRIED PORK BUN 8pcs $8.80 These were pretty good, filled with pork and chives. The filing was quite delicious. The skin was soft with crispy patches of fried skin as expected. SHALLOT PANCAKE $5.80 The shallot pancake was a little bland. The texture was very nice, crisp and little flaky. I like distinct flavors and this was very subtle, a little too subtle. No danger of bad breath after this one. Conclusion New Shanghai has exceeded my expectations. For a suburban restaurant it is ahead of the competition with freshly made dumplings in a clean and tastefully decorated dinning area. Best of all excellent value and will be back to try more of the menu and hot food. Let's hope they do not disappoint. @thesydneynoob

If you are looking for Shanghai cuisine in Sydney, then Ashfield is the place to go. New Shanghai is one of many, with its modern interiors. If you don't want the long wait for a table, try go for lunch during the week - although tables are turned over relatively quick at most times of the day The go to dishes are the xiao long bao and the pan fried buns - tip: the filings are piping hot when they come out, so watch out

I really enjoyed the food here, and there's a good reason why there's almost always a line of customers wanting too dine here. The restaurant fit out is somewhat newly renovated and i really. like the glass window that allows customers see the staff making the dumplings. I would recommend the pan fried dumplings and the classic steamed pork dumplings. My only issue is that there isn't any parking, and finding street parking on a somewhat busy road can be a bit tricky. Well worth the trouble though.

I know next door is very popular but this is almost as good minus the ambience, minus the crowds and a cheaper price. Food comes out quick also. See my pics on what I got and I would recommend all of them

Better decoration/environment than Taste of Shanghai opposite the street. I prefer the taste of Xiao Long Bao with delightful ginger flavour rather than dominant Huangjiu (Chinese yellow wine) flavour at Taste of Shanghai. However, the flour skin is a bit dry and rough, which is not the tender and smooth texture we're looking for. By the way, fillings of pan fried pork buns are boiling hot, and be careful when you bite.

Somethings when you see an underwhelming fit out it is not reflective of the food you may receive. The decor is less than appealing however they used to have decent service and great tasting food. It would seem that since the renovations next door they have lost their will. Their will to give friendly decent service, to cook the food properly or to give good value in effort to compete with their rivals next door. To my disappointment, when I got the dumplings home more than half of them were burnt. They were not very juicy either which is the case with those from next door. To be fair I was a little too hungry to care enough to actually call them. It may be that or the knowledge that they probably wouldn't care if they could understand me. The effort seemed too great to bother. It's easier to avoid going back here in favour of waiting another 5 minutes at any of the other restaurants in the area. Shame though they used to have great food despite the decor.

I like it for few reasons, one - I've been going there since I was 5 and most of my favourite dumpling dishes growing up are still there, two - it's rustic and by that I don't just mean the food, I mean the service as well, no the ladies doesn't speak much English and they most certainly cannot give you more description than if it's pork/fish/chicken. But it's the funny, lost in translation interactions with these ladies that make this place fun. However if you're looking for a place to impress your date, maybe go next door. This place is not refined in anyway, it's nostalgic, simple, comfort food. Their dumplings and xiao long bao are not fancy and delicate like DTF/other chains but I find them much more satisfying and reminds me of the ones from Shanghai. If you're after something different, try their (Nan-Jing style) sweet-soy duck and green bean starch sheet salad.

The menu is huge, however they are most well-known for the dumpling section. PORK AND CHIVE DUMPLING $8.80 (+$2 Fried) The skin was too thick compared to other dumpling specialists. The filling was tasty no complains here. PORK & PRAWN WONTON SOUP (12pcs) $8.80 The soup was light almost bland. I hope it's a simple soup not to overpower the wontons, I am giving them the benefit of the doubt for that. The wontons were average, I would have preferred less wontons but more flavour. That's not a huge chip on the bowl, it's the spoon holder xD... SHANDONG CRISPY SKINNED CHICKEN $20.80 This a such a disappointing dish. The chicken was tough almost like it was cooked too quickly although it did take quite a while to come out. The sauce had too much ginger and too much overpowering sweetness. Ordered this with rice, and the rice was tough (probably an old batch). Complete fail, a Woolies roast chicken would have tasted better. Conclusion Now I understand why the line is at New Shanghai and not here. The dumplings were acceptable, the rest is pretty bad for these prices. The Shandong chicken is a fail and if that is an indication of the standard of the a-la-carte food I'm never going back here, I prefer to cook. @thesydneynoob

The restaurant had no more than four parties when we arrived for a late dinner on a Monday night around 8pm. Then again, Lynn isn't very easy to spot if you're strolling along Castlereagh St, which may explain the emptiness. It's pretty standard to order xiao long baos at a Shanghainese restaurant. So of course, we got one order of #701 XLBs, along with #801 Shanghai Noodles with Shredded Pork and Vegetables and #805 Vegetable and Pork Wontons in Noodles with Hot and Spicy Sauce. The XLBs weren't amazing. The pork meat was bland, and the soup was very light and not as flavorful as I hoped. However, the skin was perfect: delicate and thin, yet sturdy enough to hold the meat and soup, and it had good texture. The Shanghai noodles weren't special either. I liked the variety of veggies and pork, but the dish overall needed more salt as it was tasteless and lacked any depth. The wontons and noodles in a hot and spicy sauce was a very heavy dish. Noodles had a very thick, starchy texture. Wontons were generously stuffed with a large amount of filling, mainly shredded vegetables because I didn't taste the pork, and the skin was too thick and chewy. The sauce was extremely spicy, and it irked me when we weren't automatically given water refills when our glasses were clearly empty. Lynn is a huge restaurant, so it can accommodate large groups. It's also very clean and modern. Service wasn't rude, but they certainly weren't attentive either. The only reason we tried this place was because they had a takeaway menu available at our hotel. The menu looked promising, but after dining here, we left unimpressed.

Well, as much as I like the dumplings at DTF, I don't think they're THE BEST EVER...and not for the price you pay. So I started a search on other soup dumplings in the city and came across Lynn Shanghai, as it opened up relatively recently. The place is a little hard to find, the sign is small and it's actually inside a building so you have to walk through a lobby to get into the restaurant. The building is located next to the Scientology building (why, I don't know) and that's all you need to know to find it. The place is a lot bigger than anticipated, and there's an open kitchen so you can see the dumplings and food being made. The chefs all wear masks so you can feel relieved you aren't getting stank breath on your food. The menu is rather extensive and offers all sorts of cuisine from Shanghai, but I came for the dumplings. Pan fried and steamed please. For $8.80, you get 6 dumplings...not the cheapest but cheaper than DTF and just as good...if not BETTER. Seriously, I don't know what the fuss is about DTF, the dumplings are pretty small and while tasty, they're not that tasty. There also isn't much of a wait for this place as it's still relatively new, so if you're feening for some soup dumplings and don't want to queue at DTF, this is the place to go. I haven't been back to DTF since.
