Dropped in for dinner and was pleasantly surprised! What drew us in initially was the smell (literally) from the street walking past. After looking the menu over, we decided on the tasting menu (part of which is pictured here). For drinks we got the Oolong and Lemon Lime Bitters. Overall dinner service was fantastic. The food was spot on and the service was impeccable. They timed each dish with our pace and were friendly. Definitely make reservations to secure a seat during their limited dinner service hours! Trendy spot right in the Rocks area, Lotus Dumpling Bar is an enjoyable dining option you might miss if you didn't know it was there. As the name would suggest, it also is a great place to snag an assortment of colorful dumplings. Served either steamed, pan-fried,or wonton-style, each order comes with 4 dumplings. In particular, we enjoyed the Jade prawn variety. Also nice, they offer a Mud crab & pork xiao long bao for those looking for a way to check mud crab off the list of Australian foods to try. If however, you are not feeling small parcels of meat/seafood/vegetarian magic (okay I'm slightly dumpling obsessed), they do offer several other larger dishes like the black pepper beef with chilli & vegetables, in addition to noodle and rice options. In terms of appetizers, I'd recommend the Peking duck pancakes, which came already rolled and stuffed with tender duck, eliminating the mess that ensues from DIY versions. The space itself is not particularly large, so while it may not be ideal for larger get togethers, it makes a lovely place for more intimate dining. Reservations can be made online, and definitely are suggested if you plan to go during peak times. read more

When staying in Sydney I wanted Asian food and this is one we came across that was walkable distance from our hotel! It was packed and maybe a 10 minute wait until we were seated. It was small but a clean area! The menu is great! I ordered the wonton soup, pork and chive dumplings, Xiao long Bao and some shrimp dumplings I couldn't remember! The wonton soup was amazing! Warm with a good amount of flavor and dumplings - enough to share! The other favorite of ours were the pork and chive! The rest were comparable to others we have eaten! One thing I would try next time is their actual dinner. I would say this is a decent place to try if looking to fulfill that dumpling craving. They only allow an hour & a half for dinner then wait 20 minutes to take your order. for a big group that likes to do 2/3 hours for dinner, that was kinda lame. The pork soup dumplings were fantastic though. Shui mei wasn't great but the pork pan fried dumplings were as good as the soup dumplings. Even though I was strongly inclined to overlook the blemishes and really like Lotus Dumpling Bar, I just couldn't pull it off :-( Was it the fact that a bottle of wine cost almost five times the price of a single glass of that same vino? That certainly didn't help - nor did having the wine glasses for that overpriced bottle arrive dripping with water so badly that we ended up drying them with our napkins... The dumplings WERE tasty, and they DID arrive fairly quickly, but the service remained lackluster throughout our meal. It took three requests to get fresh chilis brought to our table, and we had to ask no less than six times for water! Everything I ate here was great. In fact, I went twice in three days because I couldn't get enough of the xiao long bao, the jade prawn dumplings, pork and chive pan-fried dumplings, and more. From the mains, I find myself dreaming of the crispy eggplant. I know what you're thinking: eggplant is boring and lame. I know. That's what I thought, too. But the server recommended it, and I was blown away. The crispy honey outside gives way to a creamy interior and it just works. I am normally more of a carnivore, but this dish could turn me to the light side. (Xiao long bao is almost always good, in my experience, but theirs are especially good, with delicate, flavorful morsels of pork or chicken in a nicely balanced broth. Order many.) I didn't get to try all of the various dumpling offerings, so I'll have to come back the next time I'm in Sydney. And when friends traveling to Sydney for the first time ask for recommendations, this will be at the top of my list. read more

Excellent place and by far my favorite place in Sydney. I loved the soup beef dumplings, the fried pork dumplings (which also had a bit of soup in them),and the crispy eggplant. Everything was well cooked. All of the dumplings had a bit of soup in them and none were hard to pick up and eat (without the soup falling out). The crispy eggplant was also interesting and different -- was a bit of savory and sweet. The crispy outside was also really crunchy without being overly oily. The servers were also super attentive. Coming from the U.S., this was a nice surprise as a lot of the other places we went to in Sydney didn't have very attentive service. read more

I'm happy to have my opinion changed but it's going to take some time for my desire to return. Man Lotus dumpling bar, where have you been all my life?! We were recommended by a friend who swears it's the best dumpling bar in Sydney. We were hesistant cos we never heard of them before, my god were we impressed! We ordered dumplings, pan fried buns (which was so good I didn't know what to do with myself), and a duck and asparagus fried rice. The dumplings were fresh in terms of flavours and texture similar to the ones you get at Mr Wong, the buns were fluffy with a slight crisp on the bottom and had soups flowing the second you bite into it (pro- it tasted amazing, con - I burnt my lips) and the fried rice was jam packed with herbs and mustards seeds. Atmosphere wise, it's a little hip, a little mysterious and a little sexy. Highly recommended. read more

Small place so book ahead. Food great, super menu and great choice. Staff friendly and attentive and quick. Worth the trip over. Tasmanian wine worth checking out. Outside table was great and so friendly. Near the ROCKs so 10 mins from center of Sidney. Try the appetizers and forget the main course, save that for another visit. It is located almost under the Sydney harbor bridge so is an easy walk up from the harbour and a few other restaurants nearby which is handy as this place must be always busy. read more

And pork Xiao long bao were some of the best I've had. Eggplant, green beans (which they can do vegetarian), and crispy chicken were all great. Small restaurant with 10 tables or so and long bar seating. Vibe was exposed brick, tunes were 70s & 80s American music. Loved this place. Low key with great food. Love dumplings so I was thrilled to find Sydney had some good options. First let me say this place is really small and if you are two people you will be crammed into tiny tables about 4 inches from another couple. I was seriously packed between two couples and could not move or get out despite the fact that they had 4 four seater tables available. It's like we were punished for not bringing friends. We got the wonton chicken soup that tasted like ocean water thanks to the non advertised seaweed floating in it, we also got pork buns and beef dumplings which were pretty good--but pretty expensive for bite size food. Some of the best dumplings I have ever had. Everything made from scratch everyday. The potstickers were amazing, and the soup dumplings were perfectly salted and not overbearing. It was a super rainy Wednesday night and my girlfriend and I decided to try out Lotus as it has rave reviews. We got a table right away, we fairly quickly decided what we wanted and had our menus closed but it took a while for someone to take our orders. When the food finally came one of our dumplings was not one we ordered and it was also undercooked which isn't exactly acceptable. Our server was very unfriendly not only to us but to the people next to us as well stopping them mid sentence in an pretty angry tone of voice. Now for the positives other than our wrong undercooked dumplings everything else was quite good, portions are on the smaller side.
