Mud Crab & Pork Xiao Long Bao and the Jade Prawn Dumplings
    Stephanie L.

Trendy spot right in the Rocks area, Lotus Dumpling Bar is an enjoyable dining option you might miss if you didn't know it was there. As the name would suggest, it also is a great place to snag an assortment of colorful dumplings. Served either steamed, pan-fried,or wonton-style, each order comes with 4 dumplings. In particular, we enjoyed the Jade prawn variety. Also nice, they offer a Mud crab & pork xiao long bao for those looking for a way to check mud crab off the list of Australian foods to try. If however, you are not feeling small parcels of meat/seafood/vegetarian magic (okay I'm slightly dumpling obsessed), they do offer several other larger dishes like the black pepper beef with chilli & vegetables, in addition to noodle and rice options. In terms of appetizers, I'd recommend the Peking duck pancakes, which came already rolled and stuffed with tender duck, eliminating the mess that ensues from DIY versions. The space itself is not particularly large, so while it may not be ideal for larger get togethers, it makes a lovely place for more intimate dining. Reservations can be made online, and definitely are suggested if you plan to go during peak times.

Yum! Our bridgeclimb guide listed this place, among others, as having some great food. He wasn't wrong. They also have a great wine selection and great service. Highly recommend their soup dumplings and Kung Pao chicken!

Great Service, Great Food, Great Time. Make sure if you go after 5:30 to make a reservation or you might have to sit at the bar.

I had been craving dumplings the past couple of weeks traveling. Luckily this happened to be just down the toward from my hotel and was fantastic. I had the pork and chive fried and the prawn and pork wonton dumplings. Paired with a very nice Malbec made for a great mail.

Man Lotus dumpling bar, where have you been all my life?! We were recommended by a friend who swears it's the best dumpling bar in Sydney. We were hesistant cos we never heard of them before, my god were we impressed! We ordered dumplings, pan fried buns (which was so good I didn't know what to do with myself), and a duck and asparagus fried rice. The dumplings were fresh in terms of flavours and texture similar to the ones you get at Mr Wong, the buns were fluffy with a slight crisp on the bottom and had soups flowing the second you bite into it (pro- it tasted amazing, con - I burnt my lips) and the fried rice was jam packed with herbs and mustards seeds. Atmosphere wise, it's a little hip, a little mysterious and a little sexy. Highly recommended.

Food was great. The shiitake mushroom dumplings were the best. Wide noodle Beef was great as well. Place is very small but worth the wait.

Came Sunday at 9:30, already a quarter full. I had har- gow, chicken feet, trip, lotus leaf sticky rice (lo mai gai). The chicken feet were perfect and the har-gow full and plumb with shrimp. I like the way they do the lo mai gai. Smaller portions, devided between 3 wrappers instead of the usual 2. So you get more filling to rice ratio. Plus they wrap the race in parchment paper before wrapping in the lotus leaf, so it's much easier to peel apart. The trip was a little disappointing however. The flavor was very good but good, but should have been cooked a bit longer, as some of the pieces were still quite chewy. I patiently waited for the egg custard to come out, as they were still baking them. Worth the wait, they were perfect! Light flaky crust, and perfectly light and tender egg custard. Plus, they were the "normal" palm size tart...not those mini ones, that many places switched to, to save money. Honestly, these were the best I have had anywhere! As I was leaving at 10:45, the place was buzzing and almost full. They were also bringing out many more items, such as stuffed bell pepper (with shrimp) and stuffed egg plant (with pork). They also had special carts that would make stir fry noodles or steamed vegy at your table. Makes it feel like Hong Kong, which was the last place I saw these, in the early '90s.

Our waitress was a super disappointed we came in right at opening: 9am and was muttering how inconvenient it was we decided to eat so early to her coworker in Cantonese not knowing we could understand her. We are used to big crowds and long lines by opening at our dim sum places so we came in early to beat the crowd. Kitchen took almost 45 mins to prepare our beef noodles and it was a total disappointment. Kitchen is super slow and did not have anything other than a few items by opening. We wanted egg custard to finish our meal and was informed it would take another hour before they would be ready. I guess things are cooked fresh on the day which is good but shouldn't it all be ready by the time you open? The little old ladies pushing the cart were very nice and polite. Ambiance is your typical big city Chinese place.

We also ordered two bowls of their famous chicken corn soup and in all reality, one bowl was sufficient enough to share between two people. It was hot and delicious. Main entrees included a black pepper steak which came out sizzling on a platter and reminded me of beef fajitas & pork with vegetables and chow mein noodles. I am not a big pork eater so I ate the vegetables and both entrees were very flavorful and fresh. The restaurant had no more than four parties when we arrived for a late dinner on a Monday night around 8pm. Then again, Lynn isn't very easy to spot if you're strolling along Castlereagh St, which may explain the emptiness. It's pretty standard to order xiao long baos at a Shanghainese restaurant. So of course, we got one order of #701 XLBs, along with #801 Shanghai Noodles with Shredded Pork and Vegetables and #805 Vegetable and Pork Wontons in Noodles with Hot and Spicy Sauce. The XLBs weren't amazing. The pork meat was bland, and the soup was very light and not as flavorful as I hoped. However, the skin was perfect: delicate and thin, yet sturdy enough to hold the meat and soup, and it had good texture. The Shanghai noodles weren't special either. I liked the variety of veggies and pork, but the dish overall needed more salt as it was tasteless and lacked any depth. The wontons and noodles in a hot and spicy sauce was a very heavy dish. Noodles had a very thick, starchy texture. Wontons were generously stuffed with a large amount of filling, mainly shredded vegetables because I didn't taste the pork, and the skin was too thick and chewy. The sauce was extremely spicy, and it irked me when we weren't automatically given water refills when our glasses were clearly empty. Lynn is a huge restaurant, so it can accommodate large groups. It's also very clean and modern. Service wasn't rude, but they certainly weren't attentive either. The only reason we tried this place was because they had a takeaway menu available at our hotel. The menu looked promising, but after dining here, we left unimpressed.

Well, as much as I like the dumplings at DTF, I don't think they're THE BEST EVER...and not for the price you pay. So I started a search on other soup dumplings in the city and came across Lynn Shanghai, as it opened up relatively recently. The place is a little hard to find, the sign is small and it's actually inside a building so you have to walk through a lobby to get into the restaurant. The building is located next to the Scientology building (why, I don't know) and that's all you need to know to find it. The place is a lot bigger than anticipated, and there's an open kitchen so you can see the dumplings and food being made. The chefs all wear masks so you can feel relieved you aren't getting stank breath on your food. The menu is rather extensive and offers all sorts of cuisine from Shanghai, but I came for the dumplings. Pan fried and steamed please. For $8.80, you get 6 dumplings...not the cheapest but cheaper than DTF and just as good...if not BETTER. Seriously, I don't know what the fuss is about DTF, the dumplings are pretty small and while tasty, they're not that tasty. There also isn't much of a wait for this place as it's still relatively new, so if you're feening for some soup dumplings and don't want to queue at DTF, this is the place to go. I haven't been back to DTF since.

The place is standard yum cha, with a decent variety of noodles, buns, dumplings, and dessert buns. I will say, this place doesn't have some of the more traditional dishes like chicken's feet, possibly because it sees a lot of Caucasian customers? BBQ pork is probably the most common filling in their dishes, which I can't complain about because my taste buds aren't that adventurous when it comes to Chinese food. Service is okay, and the restaurant has a beautiful view of the water. If my husband and I are in the mood for yum cha, this place is definitely in the running.
