In spite of the business name, Sea Bay is not a seafood restaurant as the name would suggest. This is actually a Chinese noodles and dumplings restaurant. On a cold evening in Sydney, I decided to give this restaurant a try to warm up from the weather outside. If you haven't visited the restaurant before, it is a little bit difficult to enter as there isn't a typical door entrance here. Upon locating it on the street, I thought perhaps the entrance was in back. Alas the entrance is actually a screen door that you slide open to enter. The decor inside the restaurant is pretty standard. It is not a hole in the wall, but not quite upscale. It rather opts for the feel of a neighborhood Chinese restaurant. The menu is nice in that there are pictures of what the dish look like. Most of the dishes are noodle soups, but there is a sizable selection of dumplings/meat buns and salads as well. Due to the weather, I decided to get the beef with handmade noodles ($13.80) and an order of fried meat buns ($13.80). I liked the freshness of the noodles and appreciated the bok choy in the dish, as I can't seem to eat enough veggies on a trip. While the noodle soup was good, I found the fried meat buns to be my favorite of the two. The fried meat buns are also known as shengjianbao and is one of my favorite items to get when I find them on a Chinese menu. The ones here are nice as the bottoms of the bun are crispy the way I like it. The version here are the best ones that I have had since I tried them at Kao Chi in Taipei several years back. If you are looking for a reasonably priced Chinese restaurant serving noodles and dumplings, Sea Bay is a good choice. The location in the CBD is a little more convenient than heading to Haymarket to eat at one of the Chinatown eateries. read more

My favourite Chinese restaurant in the whole wide world. The pepper lamb noodles ($13.90) are the stuff that dreams are made of. I mean that literally, for I often daydream, and sometimes even night-dream, about this exquisite dish. The lamb is tender and beautifully seasoned with just the right amount of chilli and spice. The hand-pulled noodles are soft yet firm and deliciously chewy. The shredded cucumber, crunchy and refreshing, adds the perfect finishing touch to this party in my mouth to which everybody is invited. I usually also order a serving of pan-fried pork & chive dumplings ($10.90), which taste great with vinegar and soy sauce. I favour a vinegar-to-soy ratio of 4:1. The only bad thing about this restaurant is the service, or lack thereof, when it gets really busy (which is often). But who cares about service when the food tastes this good and costs this little? The above two dishes together will easily feed two people, or even three if you're all female and/or each weigh less than 60 kg. Other dishes I would recommend are the lamb skewers, the bean pasta salad, the spring pancake and pretty much any of the dumplings (I prefer pan-fried to steamed). read more

Ignore the fact that there's an adult bookshop next to this place because this place gets you the best dumplings for your money. AND HOW. If you're ever craving dumplings of all kinds (except soup dumplings) you cannot go wrong here. $10.80 for 12 dumplings that can be boiled, fried, steamed, and stuffed into your hungry mouth. These dumplings aren't small either,. You might think to yourself that you could polish off 12 dumplings easily with room to spare so you'll order 24, but once you see the portions you will resign yourself to an afternoon/evening of bellyaches for stuffing your stomach silly with dumplings. I had never been a fan of trying new foods however, a friend of mine began taking us to try new things. See Bay was his suggestion for our Chinese experiment. The dumplings are phenomenal and my wife absolutely loves the chicken soup with handmade noodles. For me though, nothing goes past the lamb and shallots. "We absolutely must go for lunch together ASAP!" a friend gushed of the cheap 'n' cheerful Chinese diner she'd stumbled upon during a meal break in the CBD. Indeed we pencilled in our future catch up, but the temptation of well-priced, handmade dumplings just metres from my own office was too much to restrain myself until the following week. I caved, and cajoled a colleague into testing out their goods with me the next day. Sea Bay is the definition of no-frills dining. The mirror-walled dining is adorned only with basic table and chair sets, while speedy waitresses scribble orders on pre-written bills ready to take up to the counter when the meal is over. As promised, just one order of the steaming baskets of vegetable and pork dumplings were indeed brimming with goods - so much so we needed a takeaway container later on - along with a generously sized stir-fry of deep-fried tofu, eggplant and capsicum in 'special sauce' (don't ask, just taste) was more than enough for two people. The total came in at about $10 per person, and our doggy bag meant we had lunch ready for the next day. My ad hoc visit was evident upon a later catch-up with my aforementioned friend, my shifty eyes the immediate giveaway to the sneaky site reccy. Was I ashamed of this culinary faux pas? This is the place to go for dumplings. Especially if you can't get into Din Tai Fung across the road. Both the steamed and fried dumplings are yummy and to be eaten with vinegar. Cramped, borderline dirty, lackluster service. Do it. On cold nights you'll have to yank open a garage door type thing to get in and then desperately try to make eye contact with SOMEONE to get on the seating list. You'll take note of the fact that there are about four too many tables in the place and the ambiance leaves heaps to be desired, but everyone is stuffing their faces. Solid picks are pumpkin dumplings (I basically had to be forced to try them and later apologized profusely to my friend for my faux pas), pork buns, pepper lamb with cucumber-- OK, order anything with noodles and anything dumpling and you're good. There's so much to choose from in the area, and I love a few spots around Chinatown for their inexpensive but rich in flavour options-- Sea Bay gets it right. Also, the kitchen is super tidy. U believe they have listened to reviews and made corrections, like reducing the smelly vinegar atmosphere (vinegar/soy for the dumplings) + office lighting, which is why I've changed my rating from a 4 to 5 star. The homemade noodles with chicken is amazing and worth ordering to compliment the dumplings. The fried dumplings I found more flavoursome than the steamed, a little pan fried with a burnt side adds a bit more oomf and flavour. The pumpkin dumplings I found a little too sweet for 12, so I suggest ordering them for a group or ordering more veggie and pork instead (as they tend to be devoured first). This restaurant is BYO with a bottle shop 7 stores down the hill. With no corkage charge, its perfect outing with drinks, food and mates. Usually people crack open ciders and premix bottles, the staff have no problems with drinking and see customers humble in return for this rule. Sometimes you wait long... sometimes you don't, it's unpredictable but thats the fun I guess, never felt disappointed after visiting because once you've sat down, your guaranteed to have amazing meal for an awesome price. A cheap restaurant on pitt street towards china town. Notorious for its popularity, and cheap price. Considering it wasn't busy, service was slow and non chalant. They even turned the lights out suggesting they were closing. It was 9:30. Basic tables, cash only, easy for a quick dinner. It has a range of soups and noodles, eggs, and dumplings. OK I'm just going to out myself as being racist against Chinese food. I just don't like the snot-like substance that it often seems to be swimming in (I believe it's glutenous oysters or something), it isn't spicy and frankly I often just find it pretty bland and uninteresting. I am vegetarian though so there's no crispy-skin chicken or Sang Choi Bao for me. OBVIOUSLY dumplings are the exception to the rule. What do you think I am, crazy? Who doesn't like dumplings? It was a Chinese friend who first introduced me to Sea Bay, and oh Mama. If all Chinese food was like this I'd eat a hell of a lot more of it. Digest suggest: Weekday evening chow down. After a long day at work I asked a mate of mine to take me to a "cheap and nasty dumpling house", he knew exactly the place and we ended up here. Thankfully there was nothing "nasty" about this place. It was clean, great ambience, great service and great food. It was also well priced, around 12.90 for 10-12 dumplings. After reading the reviews on here I opted to go for the dumplings. Well this restaurant is quite small with very lackluster service. It took a while to get my order placed and the wait time for the dumplings was longer than expected. After finally receiving the dumplings I must say that they were delicious! They were definitely worth the wait. I came here for a late lunch meal in the afternoon and the restaurant still had quite a few people eating in. I'm sure it gets very busy here during the peak lunch hour as they pack people in here like no other. read more

My boss suggested this place to me, and I keep going back. I love the pumpkin dumplings, which I can't get anywhere else. I also love the hot and sour soup with hand cut noodles. However the spicy chicken salad has a bit too much sesame seed oil in it- a bit greasy. The atmosphere is great, very busy but you're not too crowded.. Definitely get value for money here. I love this joint. My buddy brought me here after some drunken shenanigans and now it's high on the rotation for post swim dins. Its small, a bit grimy but always packed, always tasty and always cheap. I love the cold spicy chicken salad - it confuses my face (mmm, refreshing. you're so cold in my mouth! Why is my nose running? So spicy! I'm crying!). When I've been back, I insist on that salad and I don't care what else we order. Opening the glass sliding door to Sea Bay restaurant you're faced with boisterous patrons who are laughing loudly, merrily drinking their BYO wine and demolishing dumplings and homemade noodles like they are going out of fashion. The Sea Bay is unruly and that is just the way we like it. This place is loud, cramped, crowded and has poor lighting.. it also has excellent food, average service but a reputation that brings crowds of people from all over Sydney. You can make a reservation for Sea Bay or try your luck and drop-in unannounced. Tea is served to everyone dining in and the waitresses are quick to get your order. The kitchen is just as fast in preparing your steaming hot Chinese food order. We love the steamed dumplings, lamb & shallots and eggplant with special sauce. I have now been here twice and both times had great service and food. I recommend if possibly going early, around 5pm/6pm on a Saturday just after they open. When we went at this time it was quiet, easy to talk, and we got great efficient service. The second time we went it was on a weeknight (we booked ahead) and it was a great and busy vibe, actually a rather packed house. The only problem was it was extremely hard to talk and we ended up just shouting to each other. Considering how busy they were, the staff were great at taking orders and bringing out food on time. I'd recommend any of the fried or steamed dumplings. They are always cooked to perfection and great value. I'm looking forward to trying more from the menu! read more

Cheap and bad rip-off of the original "Sea Bay" noodle restaurant located in Burwood. They stole the name, but didn't bring any of the quality or flavours. Their pulled noodles lacked the "strength" that you should have in this style of handpulled noodle. Understandable that it's still quite popular, since this cuisine is still relatively new to many. If you want the real deal, either go to the original Sea Bay, or visit Poplar on George St near Haymarket and learn the true meaning of Xinjiang food. read more

Heading to a concert at the Metro and wanted to start the evening off with some dumplings and BYO beverages. This place, located in World Square, was everything we could hope for and more. A group of 4 managed to eat enough dumplings that we were unable to finish our drinks and the combined bill only came to $80ish. The place was packed with businessmen, students and even some couples on romantic dates. The value for money is worth the visit. The Sea Bay Chinese restaurant is a good cheap fun place to grab some, well good cheap Chinese food. And servings are pretty big so there's plenty to go round. It's not the most intimate place so I would go there for a romantic interlude. Not only is it pretty bright and noisy, it's BYO and pretty cheap so you'll actually look like a tight ar$e! The dumplings are good, the fried rice was good, the what seemed like dozens of dishes we ordered were all good and it was a fun night.
