We were there for a birthday dinner, bringing 11 people into a no-reservations restaurant on a Saturday evening. Gutsy? Maybe...except that we were the only people there at 6:30 pm, which was...odd, to say the least, for a Saturday evening. Then again, maybe not so odd, given the rest of the experience. First, I was carrying a boxed birthday cake. Should I have called ahead to ask if that was allowed? Yeah, probably -- but the plan HAD been to eat it at a food-friendly pottery painting place nearby. When that didn't happen for various reasons, I toted it along to the restaurant. Before I could even ask, the woman at the front of house (seemingly the owner? her kids were lounging restlessly in a booth in the corner) announced to me that they charge a PER-PERSON cake cutting fee. I was like um well I already spent $70 on this cake, so yeah, no thanks. I popped next door to Lockwood Distillery and asked them if we could eat our cake in there after dinner if I brought 10 alcoholics with me. They said sure. (Kudos, Lockwood, because they also serve food and desserts, but they ALSO apparently know how to seize an opportunity.) With the cake debacle behind us, we all sat down to look at the menu...which is when we realized that Farina In Grani doesn't appear to have a liquor license. The beverage menu was entirely non-alcoholic beers and wines, along with a sampling of sodas. So...that was kind of a bummer for a birthday dinner...but hey, the pizza was supposed to be good, so we stuck it out. (FWIW, I see another Yelp review describing the BYOB corkage fee as "ridiculous," so I can't imagine what they would have charged PER HEAD for cake cutting.) Well, then the pizza was...gosh there's just no way to put this nicely...it was bad. Tasteless dough that lacked the nice fluffy air pockets you want in a classic Neapolitan pizza crust. The tomato sauce was SWEET. It literally tasted like they'd added sugar to the tomato sauce. The spicy wagyu salami pizza thus had this weird sweetness to it that was in no way balanced by the very, very mild spice of the salami. The funghi pizza was so doused in fake truffle oil that it was almost sickening, and the cheese on that one was congealed in a way that was not at all appetizing. Someone near us ordered the Vesuvio, which came out with unmelted and seemingly pre-shredded cheese sprinkled on top. As for ambiance, there's a huge flatscreen TV that cycles through some of the most hilarious AI images of Italy...imagine yachts charging straight toward the shore; book pages flipping through glasses; etc. So at least that was good for a few laughs. Maybe it was just an off night, but between the ridiculous cake fee and the borderline inedible pizza, it was anything BUT a lovely birthday dinner for our sweet friend.
