For a restaurant that looks like a beat up old gas station on the outside, this place absolutely rules. Despite the looks from the outside, the restaurant is really well designed on the inside and is up to par with any other BBQ place you might stumble upon. The prices are fair and the service is pretty good. The staff are always quick to respond and seem well adapted to the Friday night crowds both times I and my partner went. I have to say they nail it with the two meat plate, the portions are just perfect and for the price I always manage to have leftovers to bring to work during the week. The brisket is really good, like perfectly fatty, a little burned (in the right ways) on the side, very soft and fluffy, and just overall really high quality. Their brisket is everything I'd hope for in proper Southern BBQ and they hit the mark. The pulled pork is interesting because the consistency is not consistent. As seen in the photos the first time it was served with a very thick cut, but the second time it was almost minced. I didn't love it the first time, it was kind of dry and nothing special. I liked it a lot more the second time though, and it went well with the BBQ sauce. I'm really not sure what happened to the Texas toast, honestly, the first time it was pretty good and, well, toasted, but the second time they just did the thing where they give you an uncooked piece of white bread which was sort of a let down. The max n' cheese is hit or miss but I loved mixing it with the minced pulled pork which made up for the significantly depleted amount of cheese the second time. I liked the green beans, nothing to write home about but a good side. The fried corn was solid, and a good choice if you like something on the saltier side. Overall, great restaurant with pretty good food. read more

When Its good its good and when its bad its bad this time was TERRIBLE. I think Ive learned something, take out without looking before you leave will make u spend more on dinner that night!!! And I mean just that. Ordered 2 potatoes and 2 rib sandwiches. Potatoe portion size was a tad smaller than usual but to my surprise the brisket was alot drier than usual. I understand now why they gave me 3 containers for each plate and it was to remoisturize it. I dont complain but this was not up to par at all. The Rib sanswiches were an absolute joke... Both sandwiches featured the small ends from a rack. again DRY. and i mean DRY DRY DRY. to the point where I went to separate the meat from the bone and you could hear the meat break leaving sharp edges of overcooked meat. I wish I took a picture of this before throwing it all in the garbage. Being a hometown BBQ place you need to stand out from the competition and That may just be the problem there's no other competitor close by so the quality can be substandard and there's nothing to compare it to. Dont get me wrong, I have been here multiple times and ordered even for my team at work, and it was great but all those times I did look at it inside before leaving. This time I didnt as otherwise I would have refused it on the spot. Congrats you left a nasty taste in my mouth so yes Im going to let everyone know. CHECK IT BEFORE YOU LEAVE!!! read more

Food: Good Service: Good Ambience: Local spot most order to go I ordered the Scooby snack wand took advantage of making it supreme. I don't eat onion so, none are in here. Apologies about the pic...I forgot to take a pic of before I dived in cause I hadn't ate all day. I added sweet & hot bbq sauce and this put me on my back! Also, it's enough to share if your stomach is as small at mine! read more

Traveling in Georgia and had to try the local barbecue. Papa Bucks is a busy place with locals enjoying the food. Restaurant looks like an old gas station from the outside (it may actually have been one). Good job of renovating the place inside. Comfortable looking. Order at the counter. Papa Bucks has pork, brisket, chicken, St Louis Style Ribs, burgers and such. Sides include standards like baked beans, coleslaw, mac and cheese, fries, potato salad and such things as brunswick stew, sweet potato puffs, fried okra, and deep fried corn. I went with the 2 meat combo plate and chose pulled pork and brisket with coleslaw and baked beans. Meats were tender. Brisket was good, but a little more time to render down the fat would have been appreciated. Pork was tasty as well as the coleslaw. Beans seemed a bit overworked/overcooked and had a mealy mouth feel to them which was a bit offputting. Portions were decent as well as prices. read more

One of my go to favorite bbq places in our town. Their "Scooby snack" is one of the most popular menu items which I have been getting for years. Their home made sauce is the perfect ingredient! Service is fast and friendly. read more

BBQ is it tradition firmly steeped in America. I will also say that barbecue is definitely more of a southern thing, go up north they are finally catching on. Yes, I know that the roots of barbecue we can trace back the other countries, however, America, and again primarily the South, has certainly refined and perfected barbecue and turned it into their own definitive culture. Papa Buck's BBQ is a no-nonsense, nothing fancy, straightforward type place. I believe that these humble mom and pop places are the best place to experience barbecue and the rather simple ambiance actually enhances the experience. The service was down home and friendly and only added to the total vibe. I went with the pulled pork and I have to say I was pretty impressed. The sides were good, as well. Overall, I would definitely recommend this establishment. If you are born and raised in the South, or spent a considerable amount of time in this house, you know that barbecue is a main part of our food scene. If you are from the north, look at the sentence above. Barbecue is something you definitely have to try in the south. read more

Great food. Great service. Food is fresh and very tasty. We stopped for an early lunch and the place was packed with locals- always a good sign. We each had a bit of everything - ribs, mac & cheese, brisket, fries. Loved the ribs. We didn't see the slices of cake till after we'd paid and were bummed. Luckily we knew we'd be passing through on our way back home so we stopped again for a late lunch. I tried the half Scooby with pork. Can't say that I'd ever had anything like it and I would definitely have it again. Remembered this time to order a slice of cake to go. It was salted caramel- delish and we fought over who would get the last bite. I can see we're going to be looking for reasons to go past here again soon. read more

Not bad, but not gonna be bragging on it either. I am a BBQ lover. Pork fat? YUM. But the beef brisket was fatty even for me. Flavorful, so not at all inedible, but be ready for a fatty piece of meat. Disappointed in the ribs as well, again, in no way inedible, but definitely not top shelf items. read more

On my day off from work decided to travel to another town in the very country part of Georgia and came upon Papa Bucks. Made it just in time as they were just about to close. Only thing was that they ran out of Brisket which I was craving. It's ok though so I settled for the Pulled Pork plate instead which I ordered as take out along with Mac & Cheese and salad for my sides. The pulled pork, not bad at all! The bbq sauce that I was given with it added some good flavor to it. The Mac & Cheese lacked flavor and seemed like it need some salt. I applaud Papa Bucks for providing spring greens for a side salad which I enjoyed. Overall the food was good but I wish I still had some brisket. Enjoy! read more

12/23/2020- There are not a whole lot of BBQ options in Vidalia but this one is certainly worth a try. With roots as a BBQ truck they do have some very tasty Q. I had the brisket sandwich, Brunswick stew, and the mac & cheese. I thought the brisket had good smoky flavor but was very lean. Most bbq places will offer a lean cut or a fatty cut, generally the more fatty the more flavor. I certainly enjoyed the brisket but it was a bit dry for how I like it. Next, on to the mac & cheese- you can't go wrong with this side. It was great and I would certainly get it again. Lastly, the Brunswick stew- everyone has there own take on the the stew but I did not enjoy it. I like fresh chunks of pork and vegetables, this had had a little of that but definitely was not my favorite, it was missing something. I would pass on the stew next time. The sweet tea was great, definitely a must with any southern BBQ place. A side note, I only saw two sauces on the table- original and hot. I thought the original was pretty good with the brisket. I saw a sweet sauce by the door on the way out and was disappointed that I could not try that one, I generally prefer a sweet ketchup based sauce. So for next time, brisket sandwich and mac with the sweet sauce and I'll see if I can bump it up to 4 stars. Its a solid 3.5 as is... Enjoy! read more

Good bbq. Their stuffed baked potato (Q-Tater) is amazing. The bbq is very good and so is the brisket.

I feel like this place is being run by a Karen... what do you mean I can't order a kids meal for my kids to go? I literally have kids in the car, but apparently, "to many adults ordered it." OK and? They pay for it, so why do you care? Money is money. Last time we came to eat, the manager was rude because the food we ordered didn't turn out right... it just has gone downhill. There are so many issues that need to be fixed due to the manager. All the other workers, though, are very friendly and never give any issues. Let people order kids' meals to go also the sign saying "we will not refund or fix the order after it leaves the building is absolutely insane.... do you make so many mistakes that you have to basically advertise it? Because that's all the sign is saying to me. Bonkers. read more

I really hate to give them a 2, but the food was really that bad. The service was perfect. The atmosphere very nice. When my food came out, I was super excited. It looked great. I had the Brisket. The Brisket looked moist and perfectly done. The presentation was very nice. Then my experience fell apart. The meat was disgusting. It was pure greasy. I love beef fat, bacon fat, most any fat, but this was not just fatty meat. It was like it had been soaked in oil. The macaroni and cheese also looked great. I love almost any mac and cheese. I have a wide range, but not that wide. It was gritty and cold. And the shells were mushy. The staff was great, the place was clean. Please reevaluate your cooking style and you have a home run place to eat. read more

Papa Buck's BBQ - Looked so good. Tasted so bad. - Barbeque Near Me - Vidalia, Georgia

This visit to Papa Bucks in Vidalia was extremely disappointing! First if all, the restaurant was infested with house flies, to the point that you could not eat because you were constantly shooing flies away from your food! Disgusting! Secondly, the meat, both chicken & brisket were bland & flavorless! In addition, the brisket was so overcooked that it could not be presented as sliced brisket! I gave them two stars only because the side items were good! All in all, this was a disgustingly disappointing experience; & one I do not intend to repeat! Nor do I recommend that anyone else subject themselves to such an experience! read more

Excellent pork/beef ribs. Great service and a good atmosphere to bring the family. We had a great experience

Traveling on business and deciding to stop in. Had the pulled pork salad. Man what a salad. More than a meal and not your cheap iceberg lettuce. It was a mixed greens medley. Very good. I will definitely eat here again read more

This place was epic! Loved it and can't wait to return. The restaurant is an old gas station or convenience store. The staff is helpful and friendly. The bbq was awesome. The ribs were perfect and the brisket had just enough fat to properly season the brisket. The beans were good but the potato salad was mind blowing. It had a ranch base and I left wishing I had purchased more for the road before heading home. The sauces are good too but you don't need them because the meat is flavorful. Check this place out!!! read more

Driving up to this place, you can tell that it will be a little different. The restaurant is an old gas station. We walked in and were greeted by 2 friendly girls, who seemed to be having a great time working there. After asking them about different menu items and discussing options, we decided on 1st, the original scooby snack with brisket, fully loaded, then a plate of brisket, ribs, fried corn & Brunswick stew, plus some sweet tea to wash everything down. While the Mac and cheese is a personal favorite, we were told that some times its out of this world good and sometimes it was ok, it appeared that it wasn't an out of this world day, so we passed on that, for now. Let's start with the tea, it was tasty and refreshing, nothing out of the ordinary or unexpected, but good. Next was the Brunswick stew, it was good, had great flavor and filling. Moving on to the fried corn, this was interesting, something I've never had before, I'd highly recommend trying it. The brisket and ribs came next, both were incredible tender and juicy, cooked well. I like a little more spice, but the flavor was still good. Next was the star of the show, what would have been my drunken go-to (if I had been drinking prior to trying it), the Original Scooby snack with brisket - all the way. I really enjoyed it. This is a full order of French fries, covered with cheese, sour cream, brisket, jalapenos, onions, olives & I added aittke sauce to it. This was so good, I will be ordering it each time I go back. This was easily my favorite thing there. Go here, try the scooby snacks, say hi to Sammy! read more

I would have rated Papas a 5star based on the food but due to the lack of good service it's a solid three

We typically pick up our food from Papa Buck's BBQ. Service is good and I can't comment on ambiance because I've never eaten inside. We've enjoyed all the BBQ we have eaten from there. My wife likes the corn salad too. I would say they could improve on their fries. I can't stand soggy fries. read more

Excellent bbq spot. I've been here a couple of times and been happy, especially this time with the burnt end sandwich special. I'm not normally a brisket guy but that was fantastic. It hits the wickets for bbq joints: sauces on the table, a traditional, hot, and mustard option. The menu is larger than normal places which is cool but almost detracting from the core concepts of bbq joints. That's fine. I was considering a 4 star but decided it really isn't fair to take one away if I can't put my finger on why. People are friendly and there's usually a good crowd but quick service. Tea is good and the food is great! read more

Service was horrible! When I arrive, I wasn't greeted. The cashier was rude and she got my order wrong. Once I brought that to the cashier's attention about my order, she corrected it. While waiting on my order, half of my order was ready and just sitting on the counter for 5 mins. The ladies in the front kept walking past me and when I finally got someone's attention, I had to ask for the food sitting on the counter just so it wouldn't be cold!!!! The food was trash!!!!! The restaurant felt like it wasn't a place for melanated people. I felt uncomfortable and maybe that's why I received the horrible service I got!!! 0/10 DO NOT RECOMMEND IF YOU'RE MELANATED!!! read more

Papa Bucks is one of my favorite restaurants in Vidalia. My favorite menu item is the Scrappy-do, which is a huge baked potato topped with their smoked barbecue pork, sour cream, and butter. Add some of their sweet BBQ sauce, and it's a mouth-watering delight to your taste buds. You won't want to stop eating it until it's gone, but if you're like me, and you don't want to feel bloated when you're done, you can refrigerate it to eat later. It's enough for two people or about 3 meals for me! It's always cooked just right, and the price is under $10, so it's a lot for your money and well worth it! The place is clean, and their rating is an A. Service is great and the people are friendly. Go see for yourself! You'll be glad you did! read more

Visited this place while visiting my family's new land...they highly recommended. Nothing spectacular on the outside, but more modern on the inside. Nothing fancy, but definitely clean. Great menu options, unfortunately I did not try the mac & cheese because that part of display menu was covered. I choose the brisket, baked potato, sweet potato tots (yes that's two starches, but I had to taste a sweet tater tot!). EVERYTHING I had was delicious & portions were huge! And yes, the sweet tater tots were amazing...hot & sweet...all the food leftover warmed up well also!! My husband ordered a full rack of ribs and he did not know what he was in for as far as size!!! HUGE!!! He was still eating on them the next day. BBQ sauces were unique, more vinegar based than I'm used to, but still really tasty. I am definitely returning when I visit my family again. Only complaint, the Sweet Tea was very bitter...I always have high expectations for tea when I'm down South. read more

08/28/2021 I was delighted when Papa Bucks came to Vidalia. I eat there several times a year and it has always been great. So I decided to stop and pick up supper Friday night. As usually the Restaurant was clean and the wait staff was friendly. I don't eat out as much since the pandemic has hit. So it is a treat to get to order food to go. I was disappointed that they ask for my credit card to run, instead of letting me run it my self. Once they ran my Credit Card they turned the screen around for me to sign. But would not let me run it my self. I did not want them touching my Credit Card. Not sure why they have decided to start running customer Credit Card instead of letting them run it through them selves, like they use too do. Almost all Restaurants let the customers run there own Credit Cards since the pandemic has hit. No biggie I will just disinfect my Credit Card when I get home. When I got home I got my food out and to try and eat it. The grilled chicken tasted like saw dust it was super dry and uneatable. I then tried to eat the baked potato. It was hard and not cooked all the way through and tasted old. I also got the fried corn. That was the only item that I was able to eat, even though it was subpar. I have ordered all these items before and they were great. I am not sure what happen. If they had a new cook or new management. But when I have to throw out 1/2 a grilled chicken and a baked potato, it will be a long time before I order food from Papa Bucks again.- read more
