The tavern was recommended to us, we were excited to be there! Our waiter did not introduce himself, so that was a little awkward. He went straight to--"do you want anything to drink?" Then he took our drink menu! We got the fish bites for an appetizer on recommendation and they were delicious! I ordered the double seafood meal--shrimp and scallops. Originally, our waiter only brought out scallops. The owner (I believe) came over and asked if everything was okay and he got my food switched to the right plate quickly. My husband ordered the surf and turf that was on special. Unfortunately the steak was very inconsistent. He ordered it "medium" but one side was medium-rare and the other was well done. It also had little seasoning on it. So it was not very flavorful. If we hadn't sent my first plate back we would have asked for a different steak. Overall, the food was sub-par. But the corrections that the service made were good! I probably wouldn't go back, but I want to give people slack because of the constantly changing Covid regulations. read more

I rarely leave reviews - and I've waited tables for years. I fully understand how hard people in the restaurant industry work and I don't take that for granted at all. First off, Heather, our server was great. Friendly, personable and efficient. Interior and exterior (especially) are very attractive and inviting. The food was, in our opinion, really not great. My partner and I were surprised by this based on all of the 5 star reviews. We do consider ourselves foodies - and we totally understand restaurants can have "off" nights. We ordered the ceviche special, which I believe mentioned having shrimp and crab as the seafood. It came out looking beautiful, a nice big portion (which it should be for $16.95). It had shrimp, but no crab. Instead it had a dense, chewy white fish that, to me, had the smell and first-bite taste of Thai fish sauce. We just ate around the smelly fish - the rest of the ceviche was just okay. My partner ordered their paella. Their base paella is vegan. And then for an extra $10, you can add either chicken, shrimp or tofu. Partner added shrimp. Not a taste of saffron, garlic, paprika...nothing. The rice wasn't even yellow. Maybe calling it something other than a paella would have helped manage expectations. We both had shrimp in our dishes - and both of us mentioned the shrimp tasted a little "off." To me, my first two shrimp had a kind of "musty" or "mildewy" smell/taste. I ordered the seafood au gratin. It's a seafood pasta: penne, scallops (large and decent, although I'm not a huge scallops person), shrimp, cream sauce, topped with smoked Gouda (?) and provolone. The penne was soft; again, my two shrimp tasted "musty"; and I had to ask for salt. There were no other flavors detectable...all it really needed was garlic and it would've been so much tastier, IMO. My partner and I love food. We love people. We love eating out. I wouldn't have taken the time to write a petty review if Pangea didn't have such high stars already. I truly hope it was an "off" night. I truly hope that they would prove me a fool on any other night - sadly, I don't think we'd go back for them to have the opportunity. All that being said, the service was terrible. The server barely spoke to us, just got straight to the point of "what do you want for dinner." We had overall a good lunch at Pangea tavern. As far as restaurants go in towns like Avon and Rodanthe this one is really a step above the rest in quality, cleanliness, and ambiance. Four stars and not five because our waitress refused to split our bill. I've lived on both coasts and now in the Midwest and have never had someone flat refuse to do this and claim it as a company policy. She did split the total between all of us but it's frustrating when this is such common practice worldwide and they cannot accommodate. While we admittedly did not have reservations, a group of us vacationing in the area decided to go here for dinner, based on a recommendation from a local resident. The proclamation made by this resident was, "don't worry about a reservation they will totally accommodate a group of your size". When we arrived there was a couple waiting for service and no hostess present. 5 minutes later the hostess arrived only to tell us they could not seat us for at least a couple hours..........the restaurant was practically empty. We saw this place as we were in our way out of Ocracoke. The food was delicious, the staff was friendly, and the atmosphere was absolutely perfect. When you walk in, the bar is immediately in from of you, to the left. The main dining area is to the right, and there is also ample "outdoor seating," in a covered, enclosed patio. There is a ton of natural light that feeds into the restaurant, giving it a really nice look when you're dining around sunset. The staff was extremely attentive and friendly- no screw ups on orders; the food was brought out in a reasonable amount of time. The entrees and appetizers were beautifully presented, hot, and flavorful. The desserts were also equally delicious. The creme brûlée tasted refrigerated at the bottom; if the temperature had been more constant, it would've been perfect. The Key lime pie was also delicious. Get here early! We stopped by at 6:30pm on a Wednesday and there was a 2 hour wait for a place that closes at 9:00pm. We did not stick around. We went on a Friday at 6:00pm and it was a 10min wait. In case there IS a wait...they have a great play area for littles out back, a beer garden w/appetizer service and a great pier about 100yds behind the restaurant. We were seated in the air conditioned part of the restaurant, which Im mentioning because there was a larger "patio-seating, but INSIDE" dining area that was, well, lets just say North Carolina Hot. Even with ceiling fans, it was quite tropical. Like eating on a covered deck in the south. My husband prefers a/c and he was buying, so we were perfectly happy inside. Food was quite good and worth going here for a second time. Our happy-tizers were fantastic. The peel & eat shrimp was a reasonable price and came with some horseradish cocktail sauce that was delicious. The fried pickled spears...best best best we've ever had. They were well-coated with a crispy seasoned crunchy light crumb and the pickle wasn't overcooked-nor too deeply fried as it didn't fall apart when you bit into it. Our salads were delicious as was the soup, but ... and this qualifies the four star ranking instead of 5, it was VERY salty. We have been trying she crab soups and thought the Cackalacka shrimp and crab would top them all, but va beach's Watermans still ranks #1. The thai curry coconut dish was light on the seasonings, but they brought us extra curry when asked. The shrimp and grits was really Really good...smokey grits, just the perfect stickiness, plenty of shrimp and marinated mushrooms. we finished with a shared yummy tart key lime pie. highly recommend this joint in Avon, outer banks! read more

Our group of 4 really enjoyed our meal at Pangea. We started with the tuna poke nachos appetizer. Generous amounts of crab and tuna with a mouthwatering combination of flavors. My daughter ordered the Tuna Special for the night. It was cooked to her request, and the wasabi mashed potatoes were an interesting yet delightful mix. My son has the crab bisque and a salad. He said both were really good. Two of us ordered the fish tacos on corn tortillas. We agreed they were very good. Generous portions of mahi and other toppings. Corn tortillas are not usually my choice but per our servers suggestion, I'm glad I ordered corn. The 4 tortillas came out hot and fresh. The cilantro sour cream was a nice touch with the mahi. We enjoyed the meal but we can't say enough about our server, Clay. He was on it! He made sure we were well taken care of. He arrived at the perfect moments, neither ignoring us or hovering. Being on vacation with my dog I needed to find dog friendly restaurants. Discovered this little gem on Yelp. After a great day on Cape Hatteras my friends, dog & I all stopped for lunch. PT has a fenced in, partially covered beer garden outside. Friendly, well behaved dogs are allowed off leash. It's a fairly large area that they seem to be landscaping at this time. There are also a couple of tables & umbrellas set up outside of the dog area for anyone not interested in the beer garden. Food & drinks need to be ordered from the bar & they will bring them out. The bartender, Kelly was incredibly personable. She told us they had just finished the beer garden. She's been there for some time & you could tell she loved her job. Having a wait person with personality is a big plus in my book. We found out Monday was $3 beers, lucky me! They also had some decent, local craft beer on tap. For lunch I ordered the crab cake sandwich. Not only was it tasty, the who lunch was huge! It was served with shoestring fries that were delicious. Food came out quickly & was hot. Went primarily because all of our favorites were closed and very pleasantly surprised. Started with a side salad (believe it was called seven wonders) and it was great. Not only were the core ingredients fresh, but lots of walnuts, berries and cheese. Also a fantastic value at $5. My wife had a side house salad and also thought it was fantastic. I then had a full rack of ribs, planning to take some home. Even expecting a large portion, I was flabbergasted. Three large chunks of ribs. Also two pieces of cornbread, potatoes and cole slaw. The ribs were very good and I looked the slaw (not hungry enough for the potatoes or cornbread). Took home what probably will be two more meals. My wife had fish and chips, which she thought was very good. She had a smaller portion and nice that most entrees have a light option. My son had a kids hot dog and was very happy. It looked great, a nice hot dog well grilled with beautiful fries. My daughter had nachos, which also looked great. For dessert, my son had a brownie sundae, very good but you can't really mess it up. My daughter went with the cheesecake, which looked good. I also wanted to add that although I would have given five stars just for the food, service was awesome. We had four people helping us and all seemed like they really cared. read more

I went to Pangea tavern one night and it was so phenomenal I came back the next night! The wait staff is just so attentive and caring towards each customer. The food is by far some of the best dinner plates on the banks. The restaurant itself is so friendly and modern. The layout is open and beautiful, we were able to enjoy the gorgeous patio view. Love that they take reservations! We called at 4:30 and got same day reservations for our party of 6 at 7:30. Parking was a little bit of a challenge since an event was going on nearby but we managed to get the last spot in the lot. We were promptly seated and our waitress was very attentive. Starting off the restaurant was very clean, very nice, and well put together. We started with calamari and fried pickles. The calamari was good and had a large portion size. The fried pickles also good served with a strong dill flavored sauce, the fried pickles would be perfect for 2-3 people. Onto the entree I had the coco loco shrimp, 10 shrimp served with fries, coleslaw, and a coconut style dipping sauce. Personally it was too much fried food but the shrimp where good, pretty standard coconut shrimp, the dipping sauce was good very unique. One of my party members ordered the "North Cackalacky" shrimp and grits. This had to be my favorite out of all the meals we ordered. Very rich, lots of shrimp, great sausage, very tasty and a good portion size. Would definitely order again. Next order was the Baja fish tacos, they where good. When we ordered it was served with mahi, came with four smaller fillets and all the sides/toppings you would need. All in all it was a good clean place, food was not bad but it wasn't anything to brag about. Definitely a better option than some of the other restaurants near by. Would I return?
