I made a stop here on my drive back to Chicago and found it to be one of the better Panera experiences in the last couple months. The layout is nice, open, and spacious and the subsequent traffic flow makes this feel less chaotic and cramped than some other locations I've been to. It's conveniently located on Merle Hay road really not too far from the interstate. . It's also about expectations, everyone is under staffed, so I always appreciate the service staff who are working. This restaurant still has that classic panera's feel to it with a variety of menu items and baked goods available. The food they serve is wholesome and fresh I've had the chicken noodle soup which is great in the French onion soup which is great and this time I had a sandwich of bacon turkey and they added cheese to the sandwich with no problem. The food was well prepared hot and delicious. I always like to support a local business. It's about 12 bucks for lunch it's good value for the money. There's plenty of parking as well and they take care of the parking lot they also have an outdoor seating area if you're interested in that in the summer. read more

I have had this place rated a 3 at best for about the entire 2 years I have lived in Johnston. Due to the poor customer service. TODAY THAT ALL CHANGED - it's 7:45pm, and it feels like in the midst of the gross cold, there's is a chipper Panera employee!! She was so incredibly sweet, we giggled through my entire order & I can't stress how pleasant she was. This 100% changes my view point on the panera near me & I now look forward to actually frequenting again. The food is amazing & the soup ordered for a sick husband hit the spot perfectly. We stop here often for a quick lunch on our way to Missouri. It's easy to get to and from the freeway. I always have a Greek salad, usually a half salad. I like that a half size is an option as I'm not a big lunch eater. I also like that I can fill up my water bottle and add a fresh lemon. Their dressing (on the side) is very good and I like the kalamata olives in the salad. Husband always gets the broccoli cheese soup that he thinks is better than any other. I'm not going to say that I love panera; it's basically a little bit of an upgrade for fast food lunch. The greatest thing about this location is that it has really good rapid pick-up service. I work just down the road and I order on my Panera app, drive the 8-10 minutes it takes me to get to the store, and my food is hot and ready to pick up. My order has always been accurate, and I've never had a wait beyond the 10 minutes promised. The food tastes how it should. After having traveled 18 hours in car, we arrived at this location just before 9pm, knowing the frustration it causes when someone rolls up right at closing time. We were greeted with smiles (under a mask) and a welcoming-friendly voices. I asked "we know you're ready to close, what is the easiest thing to make?".. we received such a kind response that offered anything we wanted on the menu. We ordered our food and used the restrooms and were on our way. The staff were so kind and accommodating and even gave us a few cookies for being the last customers of the evening. We just dined at this Panera for lunch on our drive to Denver from Chicago. The food was delicious. We split the pick two to save money, and are both walking away with full happy bellies. I had a watermelon feta salad, and my husband had an Italian combo sandwich. The bathrooms were clean, but the tables needed wiping. The wait was over ten minutes, but worth it. Kimberly seem out of place and uncomfortable with Deaf gestures. She read our papers as if it wouldn't be in English because other cashiers suddenly need to read it, too. Eh, but the foods we received from servers (not Kimberly) were ok. The breads for sandwiches seem different, not so fresh and wish they were wheat. Panera is always a tasty lunch option. Came here for the Beef & Blue salad (steak, blue cheese & french fried onions) ... So yummy but found out they didn't have it. Went with the avocado chicken Cobb salad and was just as satisfying. While I really wanted the steak, the nice cashier did mention that ALL of their food is made to order so you can take away or add what you want to any of your orders. She also mentioned that they were bringing the beef & blue salad back. Pretty convenient Id say. Meal was under $10, so that was nice too for a cheap lunch! Came in around 11:10 and wasn't a line but within 15 mins the lunch rush hit and line went to the door but moved very quick. Great food turnover! This review isn't about the delicious food at Panera. It's about their website. We have tried to order for delivery several times. Sometimes the order is successful, sometimes not. It acts as though the order went through but nothing arrives. I call, they say they didn't get it. Besides that, the site is not very user friendly. Soup comes with a baguette, yet half the time the baguettes are sold out. The associate and manager I spoke with the last time (this evening) said they are aware of the problems and have spoken to "corporate" about them and they're told they were "working on them". We've had this problem for many months. I will NOT order online anymore; only when I'm near a Panera will I go in and eat at their restaurant. It's really too bad. Called Outback Steakhouse tonight. So many choices to choose from. My go to is the half salad....always so much food. With your salad you get the choice of chips, baguette, or an apple. They are always quick to fill your order. So, it's Panera. So you can expect it to be pretty much the same as any other Paners/STL Bread company out there. What's interesting about this location is that it's in the ground floor of what looks like an office building. From the outside you might wonder (as I did) if it would be any thing like other Panera's you've been to. Well, I needn't've worried. Once inside the familiar smell of coffee/soup/bread wafted over me and all was right with the world. We've stopped here twice on our journeys to the in-Iaws' house and I'm sure we'll stop again. It's a nice place to stop on a trip on the outside edge of the bustle of Des Moines. As far as the food goes: Coffee - good Bread - good Soup - good Sandwich - great! This is a good Panera that is close to my office for lunch. The service and food are always good, and you know what to expect. My only complaint is this Panera gets really busy, so the line can be a problem. It still moves fast, but there might be 20+ people. The best thing is the Panera app. Order and pay online- pick it up on shelf right by the door. It is great, and it really improves the Panera process all around. I always like the vegetarian options at Panera. The Panera card is a fun bonus too. They have good regular menu selections, but also keep items on rotation that provide some different things to order. read more

Great place to get food! But I recently went to Panera this morning and ordered 14 bagels. They were great besides the fact that 5 of my bagels were DRENCHED in a garlic flavor. Keep in mind that these were the cinnamon crunch bagels. When I bit into it I was just grossed out by the overwhelming garlic taste. The Panera Bread in Johnston is my favorite of all the locations in the Des Moines metro. I think it does the best job of baking the standard items. I have always gotten a delicious lunch when I stopped there. That location gets a lot of soldiers from Camp Dodge for lunch. That location gets large groups of old ladies for coffee clubs in the mornings. It can be hard to find a chair to sit in at 10 AM or Noon. It is quiet in the afternoon so I often go there for a late lunch. The bathroom is always clean. There is always plenty of fresh coffee in the pots where you go refill your own cup. I just really like the Johnston location. It is just a short distance off I-80/I-35 North on Merle Hay Road. I highly recommend it. read more
