Another update - this time was just a small take out order of house chow mein and house fried rice. Both were very good, and generous portions. My appetite has dropped overall from taking Ozempic, so this order lasted me for 3 meals, and all 3 had a good amount of protein and I didn't need to reserve any meat for the next serving. My order was ready when promised and check out was fast and easy. I placed an order for pick up and asked for two combination plate plates, both with general chicken and fried rice and a side of the hot and sour soup. When I picked up the order, the lady at the front repeated it back to me and I paid nearly $50. When I got home and opened the food, I did not get general chicken and fried rice they both had the chicken and chow mein. I was extremely disappointed still ate it not great. The chicken was also rubbery feeling the only reason I'm giving 1 star is because the lady at the front was nice and the soup was OK. Panda House is one of the only restaurants my husband and I frequent whenever we go to Jackson for groceries or other errands. The food is consistent, the staff are friendly with attentive service, and the interior, while dated, is clean and welcoming. There's a severe lack of Chinese food in this area of Amador County, and while Panda House would be considered Chinese-American food, it is a solid spot for your Chinese-American food fix. Everything is always fresh, made to order, and comes piping hot to the table. They even have online ordering through DoorDash, and the few times that we have ordered to-go, everything is packed nicely and in proper to-go containers. There's always Chinese karaoke playing on their TV, and we usually come for their lunch or dinner specials, which are affordably-priced and come with plenty of food. The chow mein is good and the fried rice has a nice "wok hay." The bowl of soup that comes with these specials is small but packed with flavor (we usually get the hot and sour). The family dinner specials also comes with appetizers (shown in a photo below). One of our favorite items to share is their Singapore rice noodles! It is one of their special items and is not on the regular menu. If I'm feeling in the mood for soup, I like to get their signature Kung fu panda noodle soup. The broth is simple but flavorful, and the consistency and texture of the noodles is always on point. The dish comes with plenty of meat (and a good variety) as well as tons of veggies. It's also a nice side noodle soup to get if you are having dishes family style. The portion size of this dish is pretty big. In addition, since no one has uploaded photos of the recent menu, I am attaching them below as well. For 2024 the pricing is standard and reasonable. We are very happy to continue supporting Panda House and strongly recommend them if you are craving home-y Chinese food on the way up to the mountains or on the way down to the central valley. read more

We moved to the Pioneer/Pine Grove area 2 years ago from the Bay Area. We'd been missing some of the Chinese restaurants we were used to. We decided to try Panda House a couple weeks ago and then again today with my daughter and grandkids. This place is very underrated. We tried everything we were used to ordering and was incredibly surprised how good the food is. Better than most in the Bay area. Here are the highlights. 1. Incredible service. 2. Incredible menu. If I could give NO stars I would. My Husband and son went to get lunch and brought lunch home for the rest of our family. We have been going to Panda House for years and have NEVER had this happen before. As I opened the rice I about threw up...In my fried rice is a huge DEAD cooked cockroach. I called to let the staff know what we found in their food and was asked if I would bring it back so they could please remake the food... Ummmmm yeah not happening. This is absolutely the worst Chinese style food I've ever had. Well next to Chung King. I think if I were to buy frozen Chinese food out of the freezer at the grocery store it would have been 10 times better than what I had last night. The beef in the broccoli beef was so tough, I could barely chew it. And the sweet and sour was hard, chewy, and pretty much flavorless. The other stuff that I had was just okay. I am very disappointed in this food. Considering I paid $50 for a meal for two with one side, I don't think it was worth what I paid at all. I can see now why the restaurant was completely empty when I went to pick up my to-go order. I will never go back to this place again. Not unless I hear that they've improved. Really really disappointing. I used to come here twice a week but have not been in the area for a while. I ordered a couple of things to go and my friend picked them up. The prices were not as described on the menu, but about 30% higher. I called to ask and was told the online menu prices were not correct. I would have let that pass but the pot stickers were tough, as if the dough sat out too long. The prawns were covered with panko crumbs, not batter. Flavours definitely not good. I'm really sorry to give a bad review, but hopefully this will save someone else the disappointment. read more

My friend and I went to dinner here last night due to a lack of options for restaurants open on Christmas night within an easy drive from our B&B (we stayed at the Hanford House Inn, highly recommended, btw). Since I am Chinese and lived in San Francisco most of my life, and I am accustomed to excellent Chinese food. The poor reviews on Yelp were very alarming, and when I read through their menu--which seemed to offer only Americanized Chinese dishes, I was very worried. When we arrived, we were glad to see a clean restaurant, and friendly staff. We ordered the lunch specials for dinner (costs $1 extra at night), since we didn't want to end up with so much food we would have leftovers to take back to the inn. He ordered some spicy chicken dish with fried rice, and I ordered the vegetables with tofu dish, and both of us chose the hot and sour soup option. Everything was decent! My veggies were perfectly cooked and the tofu was double-fried. He liked his dish just fine but had to get regular rice because the fried rice included pork. (He's Muslim and cannot eat pork. It was our mistake for not asking.) If I could, I would give this place 3.5 stars. It's not quite 4 stars yet but I have to give it a 4 to counter all the awful reviews. To the other reviewer who said this is the best Chinese food in the foothills... that's because there's only one other low rated Chinese food restaurant in a 20 mile radius. The staff were very friendly and the food came out pretty quick but the food was disappointingly bland. The orange chicken is more of a soggy breaded chicken with a hint of orange, despite the amount of sauce on it. The sizzling noodles had hard crispy noodles mixed with the properly cooked ones, also less flavored than we would prefer. The egg rolls were edible with dipping sauce but not tasty on their own. I feel obligated to keep eating only because of the $40 bill. I'm sad to say it would be a two star rating but the crab cream cheese wontons boosted it for me. I am taking the same stance as a previous reviewer that the food is 3.5 stars worth, but service and ambience were top notch. This is a limited review, having only ordered a chicken/green bean/chow mein lunch special to go, however the food came very fast and all veggies hot and fresh; green beans and onions cooked al dente, delicious, with standard chow mein but good; cabbage and bean sprouts again crunchy and fresh tasting. My only complaints are that gravy was a lil' salty and chicken on the rubbery side, but still definitely standard fare for the price. As I was waiting I was delighted by an Asian happy birthday video and Taylor Swift romance on the big screen. Its unfortunate that they appeared to have an infestation in 2021, but once living in an (upscale) apartment building that had the same problem, I can assure you that it is difficult to eradicate this situation. Also during my short wait a large order of food was going out to someone's car, and the staff was happy to assist with a few trips to the customer's car in pouring down rain. The proprietors seeming extremely conscientious, I am pleased that I decided to stop and give this place a try without neurotically first reading reviews as I usually do. We finally decided to try Panda House and while the food was delicious, the portions were ridiculously small. We ordered to go and my Mongolian Beef styrofoam container was barely half full. Of course, we didn't find out until we got home to Pioneer so it was really disappointing to have to accept such a small portion for the money we paid. If you're going to charge $15-$17 for a dish, it better be plentiful. Same happened with our Beef Broccoli, the container was probably a little more than half full. Very disappointing. Fried rice was amazing and the portion was okay. Egg Flower Soup was also delicious. We bought 4 items and it was $50+. I'm no cheapskate but when I've ordered at other Chinese places and spent that much, I've gotten good portions for everything. I've been going to the Panda house for years. the food was always good. but new owners took it over. OH" they cleaned it up, new paint, new inside's new people. BUT! the waitress can't understand English. so it's hard to explain what you would like to eat. but the last few times I've gone in there the food was not fit to eat. I know they've got a new cook, but every thing seems to get over cooked, even when I ask to not over cook my food. it came out almost mushed. the odor of the food actually stunk. so I will not be back. I have been going to the Panda Restaurant for the past 20years and I was a loyal patron during the Pandemic. I was very surprised last week when I went to the Panda for lunch and the manager wanted $5.00 to replace a fried food order for another dish. The menu says that the dish is sauteed but it was fried. I do not eat fried food. The manager was so rude that I felt sorry for his staff and I left a very generous tip. I will not return to the Panda until I receive an apology and a free lunch. read more
