I added bacon to it for an extra cost. I was very pleased with my meal. I'm gluten free and ate breakfast here 3x over a 3-night stay in Amsterdam. That's how special this spot is. The line was always intimidating but moved quickly. The spinach/cheese/fried egg (#18 on the menu at the time) was my favorite, however TWO fried eggs should be the default. My boyfriend says adding bacon is the correct move. The tuna melt pancake was good, but IMO the jalapeños came on too strong. I wish they would've been chopped more finely. Between the pulled bbq chicken, the spinach/cheese/egg, & the American pancakes, the BF liked the chicken dish the most. The American ones are smaller than what you find in the US. The Dutch pancakes are perfectly thin, allowing the toppings to share center stage. The 'fresh tea specials' don't have actual teabags--they're more like infused hot water. But they do allow you to take drinks to-go, just with no lids on the cups. This was a convenient go to for my trip to Amsterdam and I went twice. It's right by the train station. It is pretty small and you have to wait outside for the line (even if it's raining). This was my first Dutch pancake experience and let me say, I am a Fan! You can get your pancakes sweet or savory and I decided on the traditional savory (ham and cheese) route. The coloring, air bubbles, and cake like breadiness of an American pancake but the thinness and easy of a crepe. Best of all worlds. Don't let the thinness deceive you. This pancake is a meal. The most delicious tiny pancakes! It took about ten minutes to get our food but it was worth the wait

You can't go to Amsterdam and NOT try their famous pancakes. What better place to do it than at a place called PANCAKES Amsterdam. The first day we tried to go, we had a time crunch (because of a canal cruise, classic) so the queue outside was a no-go. I was determined to eat here though so we returned the next day, as did the line, which lasted about 30-40 minutes. My astute companion noticed that while they did have a bunch of empty tables, due to staffing issues, they weren't being cleaned so things were definitely not as efficient as they could be. Thankfully, before we turned to dust, we were eventually brought to a table INSIDE which was fantastic because it was nippy outside. They have TONS of options including dutch pancakes, american pancakes, sweet, savory, you name it. For beverage, I was intrigued by the dutch coffee as my PhD level research into what to eat and drink in Amsterdam did not reveal any such thing. Supposedly, it's common around the holidays and has some semblance to eggnog in coffee. I was served coffee with a side of yolk essentially and I'm assuming that's how they do it? It wasn't as good as I was hoping. For the solid portion of our meal, we decided to split a sweet and savory pancake, you know, best of both worlds. We ordered the goat cheese, spinach, garlic oil, and seeds pancake which was just ok. The combo and texture of the spinach got old to me very quickly but the goat cheese was a welcome addition to the flavors. We also ordered the apple, almonds, calvados, and whipped cream pancake. This was DELICIOUS. They didn't skimp on the toppings whatsoever. I loved the unique flavor combo too. The pancakes are really thin and similar to a crepe but because it's not folded, the surface area for toppings is greatly increased. They know what they're doing over there with pancakes. The staff are pretty busy and I had to flag someone down to pay our bill but this type of dining is low maintenance anyway. All things considered, it was a good experience. read more

We waited about half an hour to sit outside, as the view is beautiful, we let a few people go ahead of us to sit inside, so we could seat and admire the view while we ate. No sooner we were seated, the manager came to our table and suggested we moved inside because it was about to pour. I got an American style pancake with strawberries, cream and chocolate sauce, and my husband got the European version, which is a flat thin pancake, not quite a crepe, that is filled with whatever you add to it, in this case bacon, and my husband ordered two sunny side up eggs on top. They were both excellent. The food took a bit of time because they were very busy. We got our coffees and hot chocolate very quickly and by the time the food came out, we were already done with them. This is one the problem I have in Europe. I find a coffee to be too small. No matter how strong coffee is, I always want to have a giant cup of it, American style. This is the one thing I can say I am spoiled about. for me to order several cups of coffee at a restaurant it's a bit cumbersome, especially when in Europe you don't get unlimited refills like you do in the States. Overall the food was very good and the service was very friendly. Outside it is very beautiful to sit, people watch and look at the canal, but inside there is absolutely no view. The way this restaurant is set up, you don't get to see out the windows except for the side street which is small and crowded.
