In town for the holiday and was craving some tamales. This one came up with potential on yelp. So, decided to try. Ordered two dozen tamales. 12 pork, 6 chicken and 6 cheese. When ordering I was told they were cold. Weird, but I was fine with that. Was excited to finally get my fix, but when I cut into it. It was mostly masa. In fact probably 90% was masa with a very small amount of meat. I have never had tamales with this ratio. So disappointing, especially since yelp rating was decent. It's obvious that the rating was not for the tamales. Also, paying $29 for a dozen of pretty much all masa tamales was very dissatisfying. I would not recommend getting tamales from here. read more

I had a strong craving for pupusas and thought to try a place that was new to me. I didn't have much luck in obtaining a menu online but did see that they serve Pupusas. So I put in an order of 2 of each- cheese, chicarron with cheese, and revuelta. I was told it would be ready in 7 minutes. Upon walking in, I was greeted by trays of great looking pastries. I ordered an horchata in addition to the food. But the end interaction of the staff, was what left the biggest impression, it was barely a thank you- which given the hard times everyone is in always leaves the biggest impact. I found the pupusas to be less flavorful than previous orders at different places. I typically order the same type. So always worth trying, but at least I know for next time to explore other places, or stick to my usuals. read more

My daughter recently ordered a Tres Leche Cake with strawberry filling from here. We called and asked if it was possible to get a cake for the following day. Due to issues beyond her control, she needed a cake quickly. Therefore we ordered a 1/2 sheet cake. Indeed they were really kind and said they could make the cake no problem. My daughter also asked if they could cut the cake in half so that we could share it or freeze it. The lady at the restaurant asked if she wanted it decorated. My husband and I went to pick up the cake for my daughter. We informed them we were there to pick up a cake. They brought out two boxes. One was decorated beautifully and the other had no decorations. Not to mention it was not expensive. They were super kind and friendly. We got a couple of different items off their menu. The pupusas were delicious and I would have that again. My husband and I did get a large piece of cake. I have to say it was one of the best Tres Leche cakes I have ever had. So grateful for this place! I walked in on a Saturday morning to get a last minute cake for a coworkers birthday that I totally forgot about! Not only did they have it ready in less than 10 minutes, but they put a little message on the top as well. It was a well-spent $35, one of the best tres leches cakes I've ever had! Ok, i was in a tamale blood-thirst frenzy this last Christmas 2019. I usually make my own, but I was just lazy and a little more drunk than usual this past month or so. I decided to find some tamales on Wells avenue, what I call (Im Hispanic) little Mexico. The place is pretty large, plenty of table space. They also sell pan dulce, which is the Mexican version of donuts/ sweet cakes. Not as good as donuts however, in my humble opinion. They also make cakes made to order, as i watched a young lady come in and pay for her cake. The lady behind the counter was really nice, and I ordered 3 tamales (pork) and 3 carne asada tacos. Both took a bit to prepare, so i can honestly say they make to order which is great! Nothing i hate more than getting my food within a minute. I can go to Taco Bell for instant crap. I love good food, and I dont mind waiting. The tamales are damn good! Seriously, almost as good as my homemade ones, and I dont say that lightly as mine are the bomb! The tacos were equally great as well. The meat was perfectly seasoned and the salsa was damn amazing! I like this place better than Betos, and Betos is one of my favorite Mexican food restaurants! Worst Mexican food I have ever had especially for the price. I wish I could give a good review for small Reno business. But I am saving you from spending your money there. Stopped in this place to have menudo. I was done after a week of fishing at Pyramid Lake for a week. I always enjoy a piping hot delicious bowl of menudo. Especially because I make my own menudo with lots of care to assure delicious menudo. The broth was tasty. It was no real hot like I like it. Talk about being at the right place, at the right time! I was feeling homesick, hungry and craving tacos and Las Palomas just happened to be around the corner. So naturally, I headed that way. Everything on the menu seemed delicious but I went for the carne asada tacos and hand-made tortillas as they are a good cure for the blues. I accompanied them with an ice-cold horchata. I shopped around while I waited for my food and found a few treasures to take home, such as candy, canned juice, snacks, soda and pan dulce. They have a wide array of sweet bread, so it was tough to make up my mind. The tacos were ready in no time. The portions were a decent size, I made 2 tacos out of one. The hand made tortillas were very good: warm, flexible, soft and strong. They did not get soggy with the salsa or lime juice. The salsa was mild and flavorful, made with roasted tomatoes and peppers. The carne asada was nice and juicy. The horchata was ice cold, not too sweet and had a subtle cinnamon flavor. Everything was warm and fresh. The staff was very friendly and chatty. It's time for an update on this sweet little bakery on Wells. The sign on the window says "Tacos de tortillas Hecht a mano", which means tacos in tortillas made by hand. A simple phrase that translates to a texture and flavor you've not likely experienced elsewhere in Reno. Not many people take the time and extra care to do this, but when they do, it's so worth it. These tortillas are light, thin, and strong! At most taquerias I'll divide up the meat over two tortillas, and here it's the rule! They pile them up with meat of your choice, and while you could eat them as is, dividing them let's you savor the sweet tortilla for a little while longer. With the tacos they serve a bowl of their house made salsa roja. The salsa is a deep brick red color, and looks foreboding, but it's actually quite mild and a great accent to the meat. This is a tiny hidden gem on wells that more folks should check out. Friendly, fast, clean and they also do custom cakes too! read more

My mother decided to stop by on her way to San Jose. She left her purse there and when she realized she had left it there she called to ask about it. Otulia was the woman who answered the phone and stated that one of the cleaners had picked up the purse and gave it to the owner. When my mom went back to pick up her purse it was handed to her by the owner and when she opened her wallet she saw that $500 were missing from her purse. Panderia Las Palomas happens to me the restaurant closest to our place so we checked it out one day after getting massages at SoulSpa. I got the cheese & jalapeno tamales after seeing Richard M.'s review and my husband got various tacos. Right as we were walking in these two guys were leaving and were talking to each other about how good the tacos were. This place is part bakery, part restaurant, part corner store. You can tell its been there for a while but its very clean. We got two cups of water in styrofoam cups (have not seen styrofoam in a restaurant for a long time) The rice that came with our meals was def the best taqueria rice of my life. Tamales were solid, not sure if they were the best of my life though. We loved the homemade salsas, wish they gave out chips to enjoy it with but I doused the tamales with their salsas. I also got the cheese & jalapeno bread from their bakery after seeing all the photos on Yelp. It was good, not great. The bread seemed slightly stale and then was rock hard by next day so I only ate half of it before I had to throw it out. Minus 1 star as I thought the prices were pretty high. A BBC wonderful little restaurant on wells are. As you walk in you are double punched, once by the fresh pastry aroma and then the meats and spices cooking. If you like fresh Mexican pastries, this is your restaurant. There is a whole display case of pastries. I ordered a combo plate for lunch, four little enchiladas. The enchiladas were delicious. They were stuffed with chicken and cheese. The red sauce that covered the enchiladas was delicious. Rice and beans were also served on the plate and were also delicious. This is a very cute little bakery! We stopped in for tacos and really loved them! We ordered 3 tacos and paid less than $5. This price is unbeatable! The tortillas were about the size of my palm with a massive scoop of meat in them. They were so good!!!! All the ingredients were really fresh and we loved them! We got 2 asada and 1 al pastor on recommendation. Both were good but we liked the pastor better, the asada was very fatty. The place was pretty quiet when we got there but there was a huge display of cookies and of sample cakes. The cakes looked pretty and cookies looked awesome. I would love to try one. I would give the atmosphere a 3 and the food a 4. Service was good and they made sure we didn't need any salsa or anything. I ordered a menudo and grabbed 2 Modelo Especial and put them in the near by freezer, I figured they'd be ice cold by the time I got my order. My menudo arrived piping hot with the side of chopped cilantro, onion, limes, and freshly made corn tortillas. They give you fresh salsa too but I brought my own Chile de árbol which was chopped by the nice lady in the kitchen. Everything was just perfect! The carne asada tacos are pretty bomb too, those are made with hand made tortillas as well. Next time, because there will be a next time, imma have Chile rellenos! Oh, we also had some of their tasty pastries for dessert. This restaurant is a bakery and restaurant in one. They sell ready made cakes and special orders too. YES! YES! YES! I knew there had to be such a gem as this one in Reno and we found it. It was just the authentic Mexican food we were looking for...plus bonus bakery. What I love about Mexican food is that it is simple; that makes it delicious. Just good food. This was good food. It has happy little pastries as you walk in and some cool refreshments. We had the Torta and the Chili Relleno, and they made our picky 2 year old a great bean and cheese burrito. We enjoyed a couple beers and finished it off with a Mexican ice cream popsicle. I'm feeling rather guilty -- I'm shamelessly abandoning my previous Reno go -to for Menudo (Los Gallos Taqueria) for the charms of another, Panaderia Las Palomas. It starts with the sounds -- you can hear the rhythmic slap-slap-slapping of somebody putting the finishing touch on hand-pressed tortillas before slapping them onto the comal (ok, ok, its a flattop) for toasting, rather than a few quick blasts in the steamer. Then there's the practiced drumroll of a taquero, dicing meats for tacos, tortas, and burritos. The menudo is jammed full of tripey goodness, with all of the requisite parts except perhaps libro, and when they take your order at the counter they ask if you want your menudo with or without (a) granos (hominy) and (b) pata (slow cooked beef foot the collagen from which gives good menudo its silky texture). Naturally you get all the sidearms, chopped onion, chopped cilantro, Mexican oregano, a wedge of lime, and toasted chile de arbol to add heat, the only knock being the chile de arbol although toasted was stale. All in all so good I ate their menudo two days running (happily they indicated they served menudo daily, not just on weekends). I got several pieces of pan dulce to go, all were very good (true panderia layout of glass cases with tongs and trays, too). Talking to one of the owners I was shocked to hear the tortillas were made from Maseca - they didn't have that nasty Cal (lime) flavor I associate with Maseca. Sorry Los Gallos but I'm a food slut and abandoning you for the charms of another. Don't worry, you'll get over it. read more

Several restaurants later, we discovered Las Palomas. On Wells Avenue, if you don't pay attention, you will miss it. I suggest the pupusas, tortas (2 for 1 on Sabado the last time I checked), albondiga soup, tamales. Everything I've tried I loved. I had high hopes for this place after reading all the good reviews but was pretty disappointed. I thought it was a good sign that they have a very limited menu--assuming they put all their efforts toward making those specific items. Every time I go to a taco shop I order the same thing so I have an equal playing board to compare to other places. Not going to lie, the corn tortillas were made fresh in the shop and were some of the best I've had. Perfect texture. The meat however tasted old--almost gamey. I actually described it as literally tasting the earthiness of the cow, pig, and chicken. Sorry, but I can't say I'm a fan of gamey tasting meat in my Mexican tacos. I'm not very familiar with Mexican pastries but they certainly had quite the selection and they all looked delicious but I didn't order one so can't speak to the quality. For lunch, the hubby had ordered the 3 Soft Tacos with Rice and Beans, and I ordered a Chicharron and Rice and Beans Pupusas. The Pupusas on Mondays are $1ea. The hubby's lunch was $5.95? I ordered a large horchata and he got a bottled Dr Pepper. The food total was under $14 for two people! The pupusas were served hot and fresh with the usual cabbage slaw and red salsa.
