El Paisano is a hidden gem in Reno! I drive by this place every time I go to Costco but only recently checked it out. I am disappointed I didn't visit sooner. First of all, the staff here is super nice. I was deciding between a few different menu items and the lady taking my order made suggestions. Second, the prices are unbelievable! I appreciate that my children (super picky) will eat a cheese pupuasa and rice. This place is authentic and well priced. Someday I will adventure out to try other menu items. I like their toppings bar which allows you to pile on ample of what you like. The cashier was friendly and helpful when I asked questions about what some of the words on the menu meant. My kids liked the rice, but I prefer mine a bit fluffier/moist. The nice people around me interpreted for me when my number was called in Spanish and I couldn't figure out #79 in Spanish. We got a flat tier and was getting the tires replaced at Costco. We had time to kill and needed some food, so we walked across the parking lot to this place. I am so glad we did. I got the bean and cheese pupusa and it was amazing. Great flavor, great texture, perfectly cooked. It is a quaint place in a strip mall. You head up to the counter, place your order, and they call your number. There is also a salsa bar. The service was fine because it only includes taking your order. My one complaint was that even though it was more than 90 minutes before closing time, they were already cleaning up, removing the salsa bar, and stacking chairs on the tables. The prep would have been fine, except for the bleach smell from the cleaning solution...it is hard to eat food, even delicious food, when everything smells like cleaning solution. It was okay, it fulfilled my taste for Spanish rice. I also ordered a side of french fries. They were pretty good and crispy. I was so surprised to see that they actually put a bunch of ketchup on my fries, which I thought was really odd. I would like like to start this off by saying that El Paisano is ol' faithful. When I want a solid taco, I know that I can go to El Paisano for my taco fix. I have been going to El Paisano since they opened up this location. I went to their location off of Oddie before this one opened so I must've been coming here for at least 8 years! When you walk in, you will have to go up to the counter and order. I love that they have an extensive menu. You can get tacos, pupusas, tamales, the list goes on! They also have a good variety of meats for your choosing. My go to's are definitely Cabeza tacos, asada tacos, pork and cheese pupusas, and the Salvadorian tamal. My favorite tacos are Cabeza tacos and these are by far the best in town. I am usually let down by other places with their Cabeza so I have to come back here to get a proper taco fix. It is moist, tender, and flavorful. This can also be said about their asada. You can not go wrong with their asada. A cool thing about El Paisano is that they have Salvadorian dishes on their menu. Their pupusas are the best that I have had in Reno and Sparks. The pork and cheese pupusas are my favorite flavor combo but they also have beans, chicken, and zucchini. Another Salvadoran favorite of mine is the Salvadorian chicken tamal. Now be sure to not order the Mexican tamal because that is different. The Mexican tamal is wrapped in corn husk whereas the Salvadorian tamal is wrapped in banana leaves. I find that the Salvadoran tamal is more moist than Mexican tamales so I think that is my biggest draw to it. It is not spicy but there is still a lot of flavor with the pieces of chicken, potato, and cactus in it. If you have never tried a Salvadorian tamal, I highly suggest getting one from here! They are always friendly here and they bring your order right out to your table. The pupusas usually take a little longer to make so be patient if you ordered any, It is worth the wait! There is also a salsa bar where you can grab all the salsas that your heart desires! read more

I ordered the #10, which had 2 pupusas, rice, and beans which was a little over $10 with tax. For the pupusas, I chose to have both filled with cheese and chicken. When my order was ready, the filling was nice and melted. The size of the pupusas were pretty big, I was only able to eat one of them and half of the sides. The really great part about this place is the salsa and toppings section that is right next to the pickup window. They have your classic El Salvadorian spicy cabbage and an array of different sauces/salsas. I loaded up on the spicy salsa and the cabbage so that each bit had a little bit of everything. Even the rice and bean had really good flavor. If you are wanting to skip the sides and are only wanting to eat the pupusas, then you can do a la carte pupusas. If you order 2, that will ring up to a little over $5. I also tried the agua de jamaica, which is a hibiscus drink. This reminded me of pomegranate juice. It wasn't too sweet either. I wouldn't hesitate to come here for their fresh made pupusas! We ordered chicken tamales, a couple pupusas and a chile relleno with extra beans on the side. I will tell you this is probably one if not the only top spot to go for Salvadorian food in Reno. The pupusas are quite a generous serving size and they make it with your choice of filling, that's why they take a bit longer but definitely well worth the wait. The tamales are different than the Mexican tamales, the texture is smoother than their Mexican counterparts. I prefer the Salvadorian version better because they are more moist. Their version of, as close as I could describe is, coleslaw is a much hotter version than the plain ones I prefer, their use chili flakes and jalapeños, too hot for my liking. I wanted to try their chile relleno since I absolutely love them. They did not disappoint, it came with a wonderful rice, not that converted stuff pretending to be rice, and beans. The chile relleno were not as generous with the cheese stuffing as I like it but they were good nonetheless. I do like this place and you will too if looking for great pupupsas. read more

Came to el Paisano to have a pupusa. I've never had a pupusa before and I honestly had no idea what to expect. In my head I was guessing it would be some kind of tortilla with topping on top. I was wrong.... pleasantly!!! It is filled inside and then fried. It was so delicious!!! I got mine with chicken, cheese beans and zucchini. The girl working the counter was very nice. She helped me and was patient with my questions I got the plate which came with beans and rice. This is an inexpensive plate and really fills you up!! This restaurant is the real deal when it comes to serving authentic pupusas. I ordered the mixed revuelta and loroco. They were absolutely spot on delicious and generous in size. The revuelta is a combination of pork and zucchini (?). The second one is the flowers of a squash (?) . Regardless, it was worth the wait. (maybe 15-20 mins. ). Altho I was getting hangry... Their condiment bar gets an "A" for freshness and variety. However, my pupusas were both burnt. Some of it wasn't edible. I noticed other pupusas in waiting were also burnt.
