This place used to be SO GOOD before they fired the baker who had been there for over 20 years. Now when you go the bread is hard and stale, and overpriced at that. Some of the works are friendly and others are not. I will say after how many years they've been open they have hardly renovated anything, but the place is not falling apart. Only thing I will add is to NOT buy the tamales from here. I bought 6 and 3 of them had HAIR deep in the tamale so I know it wasn't mine. Absolutely disgusting. read more

Then I thought of my favorite place for mexican pastries! I headed straight to Panaderia Azteca. I have been here before but forgot about the wide variety of pastries! There are so many cake types! Some traditional sweet breads, some empanadas, even donuts. There is literally a wall of different types of pastries! You get a tray and tongs, then pick what you want! Each pastry tastes great! Definitely homemade. There is also an area that sells homemade churros and tres leches. They also serve tortas, which are fantastic! Good size and good price! They have tamales too. There's an abundance of different Mexican pastries and breads. I usually come here for the flan, tres leches, and churros. Seriously some of the best Mexican desserts I have had are from here. For those of you who haven't tried any of those, I highly recommend coming here to check it out. They also sell tortas and various other Mexican snacks and drinks for those of you that don't have a sweet tooth. The ladies who run the bakery are super sweet and hardworking. A good friend from work recommended this place. I was impressed. The Tortas are amazing - perhaps the best value-to-taste ratio in town. For five bucks, you get an enormous and delicious sandwich made with any combination of delicious shredded pork, cheese, head cheese (listed on the menu as pork cheese), ham, and avocado. In addition, the sandwich seemed to have lettuce, tomato, onion, and (I think) mayo. It's served up on a fresh-baked, pillowy soft torta bun, resulting in one of the most satisfying food items money can buy. I also tried their tres leches cake in the sundae cup, and I must admit, it is one of the most delicious and refreshing dessert experiences I have ever had. I rank it right up there with Grimaldi's Cannoli for overall quality. It's decadent and sweet, but it taste fresh and cool, which keeps it from becoming cloying. I will ask next time if they have flan. I'm willing to bet that if they do, it will also prove to be the best in town. The gentleman behind the counter (the owner, perhaps) was extremely welcoming and friendly. He took my order and rang me up in a flash, then he answered all my first-timer questions. He even allowed me to sample a slice of the pork cheese. I will definitely be ordering that torta next. If you haven't ever tried a torta or the tres leches cake from this place, you're seriously missing out. This is one of Reno's hidden gems, and you owe it to yourself to at least give it a try. I chose Panaderia Azteca to make cupcakes for my baby shower, I asked for a very specific decoration on the cupcakes, and I was sent a 'demo' of what I wanted the same day! Veronica stayed on top of my order, making sure everything was just as I wanted (something I didn't expect for what little money I was spending for their services). The Mexican breads here are fantastic, and every time we pass, we can smell as we drive by and are always tempted to stop... I know that our cupcakes (that we pick up the day after tomorrow) will not only be beautiful, but delicious, thus leaving a very good taste in my mouth, and some cash in my pocket. UPDATE-changed my rating from a 4 to a 3 as the cupcakes we ordered were not tasty at all, which came as such a surprise because their breads there are so good! To top it off, I noticed it in the car after I paid for it and went to another "panaderia" just to come across the same problem - dry old bread! I will review that one too in just a minute! This is the closest panaderia to my apartment, so I went in hoping to like it enough to come back. Once you walk in, you can smell the pastries and sugar, which is a good sign of how fresh everything is. They have a lot of types of pastries to choose from, and they also have a small selection of snacks. They even sell tortas and other small Mexican treats. We picked up a various assortment of pastries and treats, and our total was about $7 for everything, a very great deal! The bread tasted great, no complaints or issues there. Mmm.. i got the pork Carnita torta with avocado and cheese.. such a huge sandwich for only 4 dollars! The meat was fantastic and the cheese... guys... The CHEESE.. was so wonderful. Also if you have a sweet tooth like my boyfriend does for mexican pastries stop by the cabinet on the left before you leave and pile on your tray with goodies.
