This place felt like Willy Wonka opened a milkshake bar for the Instagram generation. We stopped by Black Rock Dessert while looking for ice cream and instead found milkshakes on steroids. We ordered the Dust Storm: a vanilla milkshake with chocolate bits, topped with a giant blondie skewered dramatically on top, plus whipped cream, sprinkles, and chocolate drizzle. The rim of the jar was coated in marshmallow dip and graham cracker crumbs because apparently subtlety has left the chat. Honestly, the presentation was on point and exactly the kind of milkshake kids dream about. Which is why we ordered it. My tween declared it "the best milkshake I've ever seen in my life," and honestly, that alone made it worth the stop on our mother-daughter trip. Taste-wise, it leaned very sweet for me and didn't have a ton of flavor depth beyond sugar overload. But clearly the goal here is maximal fun and aesthetic, and they absolutely nailed that. It's basically a photo op you can drink. The shop itself was surprisingly quiet when we visited in the evening--we had the whole place to ourselves--but there were games to play while waiting for our order (we pulled out Pick Up Sticks, which transported me straight back to my 90s childhood living room). The ladies at the counter were also incredibly kind and patient explaining the menu and flavors to us. I am a bit torn on Black Rock, but it's a great dessert spot nonetheless. Stopped in at Black Rock Dessert on a Thursday evening. Just one lone employee was running the place. In my opinion, it wasn't enough. There was a steady flow of people, and she couldn't keep up with orders and customer service. We opted for two small scoops of ice cream for the kids: chocolate and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. We also ordered the sizzling blonde brownie sundae. It was about $20 for three items. The ice cream was very good, especially the Cinnamon Toast Crunch. Very unique flavor and great texture. The blondie was a bit of a letdown. First, the blondie was not "sizzling". It wasn't even really warm. Only placed in a waffle iron for a few seconds. Second, it seemed very dry and crumbly, maybe even overbaked. I thought the ideas at Black Rock are fun, and I think trying one of their milkshakes should be my next visit. However, there are a lot of great ice cream spots in Reno. We were looking for a new dessert place to try and the pictures of the milkshakes really caught my eye. I also saw they had bread pudding and so we decided to head over to check it out. The store is a decent size and has lots of tables and seating options. The menu was up on TV screens and had photos of the different milkshake options, as well as banana split, brownie sundaes etc. I didn't see the bread pudding on the menu, however I did see one sitting in a display off to the side so I do think they offered it. After noticing they offered a fruity pebble cereal milkshake I couldn't resist ordering that. They do a great job with presentation, lining the rim of the glass with fruity pebbles and also toasting to marshmellows before rolling them in fruity pebbles and adding them on top. My husband opted for the ice cream flight and was able to try fun flavors like waffles and syrup. The staff chose what topping to add to each flavor and the selections were spot on. The staff was very friendly and helpful. Really loved the dessert options, the only thing I didn't really love were the bathrooms as they did not smell very appealing. Meh. Stopped by for a little treat after dinner before heading to Magique at The Nugget. We stepped one foot in and knew that this would be a subpar experience and we were not incorrect. Many of the ice cream containers only had a few scoops left in them, so we got the frozen dregs. Overall consistency is not very creamy unfortunately and a couple flavors were super melty. Our daughter was content with her "deep" (chocolate) on a cone. One of us got half "Santa's cookies" and half chocolate mint oreo, which she found had a nice amount of mint flavor to it, but the cookie one essentially just tasted like vanilla. Also, she asked for some sprinkles and ended up with, like, ten on top, so they're not very generous in the toppings department. The other one of us got a half cinnamon toast crunch and half candy cane, and the latter also tasted like vanilla. Not sure what's going on with the holiday "flavors"! The place was kind of soulless but the staff was nice enough and the prices were decent considering the small portions. This isn't somewhere we'd necessarily recommend. read more

Interesting experience here. Young bucks working the register. Got given the wrong change, more than I should have gotten. Told the young man but he didn't understand. I didn't want him to be short at the end of the night so I did tell the manager, not to get him in trouble but to make sure the count was right and he wouldn't get accused of taking anything. It's a kids dream with all of the extras on top, and of course, your choice of ice cream flavors for the actual shake. We came here as a birthday celebration and ordered 7 different items. Each one of them was absolutely incredible, a work of art. All of their ice creams are freshly made in-house and you can taste the quality. The cookies, brownies, and cones are also all freshly baked in-house. We also got the Chango Loco shake which was piled high with goodies. If you've ever eaten at Black Top in NYC, then you know a good shake when you see it. We had a nice chat with the owner, Marlon. He told us a little history of his store and mentioned that his sister also ran a Guatemalan bakery. The ice cream/dessert store is connected to a coffee shop where I got a cup of joe. This is a great place to go if you are looking for something unique and interesting in a milkshake or ice cream. It is a very unique ice cream shop. They have a decent selection of flavors for ice cream, but they are all different and flavors you wouldn't find anywhere else. I tried a scoop of the Berry Crunch, which is made with captain crunch cereal. It was so good! The milkshakes they make have crazy toppings and you can get them to go or to eat in. I had the s'more milkshake. I loved all of the toppings more than the milkshake itself.
