The Pan American is a ZERO nonsense laundromat on Mt. Pleasant street. We were traveling for work and simply wanted to wash our workout clothes. Easy to find, right off the main drag, and plenty of bodegas around to grab a drink while your load is drying. Yes, people from "all walks of life" do their laundry here. Get over it, dude. You can do one load, dry it, and pay for your soap/dryer sheet for $7. We quietly watched some soccer on TV and chatted with a nice young undergrad about his coursework. Came here when my washer was out and wow, this place is a gold mine. They are just making so much money here! Big wash is $6, smaller wash is $4.50. You need a card to preload to pay for the machines. I hadn't been to a laundromat in a long time and took my quarters. While it's a place where you'll be able to get everything done, it's designed so poorly and so crowded it's really hard to navigate with the people and tables dead smack in the middle. Still great local spot and clean enough to feel comfortable! read more

Terrible place. I dropped off 3 large comforters to be washed and asked for unscented / free & clear detergent to be used. Came to pick them up and they smelled so so strong of detergent. They offered to rewash in supposedly unscented detergent but the comforters still smell so strong. They may forever smell like strong scented detergent. I'm trying to air them out but I don't know if the terrible scent will ever come out. Their communication was also stunted, impossible to get answers or solutions. read more

Clean, new machines, no need for coins - you get a card, where you can deposit money from either cash or credit card. (min. is 10$ pr. deposit). Three sizes of machines - smallest is 4,50$ and largest is 9$. Dryer is 0,25$ pr. 5 min. 25 min. for a laundry og 20 min. to dry. The staff is very friendly and helpful. I went on a Saturday late afternoon to wash a large comforter I had. This laundromat is located right on Mount Pleasant St. with tons of restaurants and other stores nearby. While my clothes dried I went to a thrift store and got an iced coffee at Elle. I called ahead to ask if they had a large machine I could use and how late they were open --the man on the phone was helpful and friendly. The machines only take quarters (as expected) but they're able to make change for you when you go there. I handed him a $10 bill and he gave me a bag of quarters already tied up and ready to use. The large washer cost $5.25. The man working there was the one I spoke to on the phone and he was just as helpful and friendly as he was on the phone. I had a few other questions and asked to store something behind the counter while my comforter dried and he kindly let me. It's a little tight by the driers when it's crowded but nothing unmanageable. I do wish there were more seating options available, just 2 benches. I have been coming here for years to do a drop-off wash and fold. I usually drop off on a Saturday early afternoon and pick up on Sunday around the same time; however, they recently basically held my clothes hostage, saying it would be ready on Monday, giving multiple conflicting reasons. On Monday early morning I get a call saying my clothes are ready, but I can't go immediately because I have work, and wanted to pick them up after work. I tried calling and confirming I can pick them up after work. but the person gave me conflicting information, saying that maybe tomorrow, but maybe today, even though I was told they were ready. Not sure if they have WiFi. This is not a sit and play on your computer laundromat. It's for getting things done quickly, cleanly, and efficiently. Nice folding tables and plenty of rolling carts for transferring clothes. If you need a lot of extra help, it might help if you speak a little Spanish. Just an update - all is still as described in other reviews - a great place to bust out a lot of laundry for not much money in about an hour and a half - handily just enough time to grab a pint or two at Raven Grill next door. Go after 7:30 on a weekday and you will miss the crush of families, fairly busy on a Saturday as well - everyone is very friendly and helpful regardless. Two tips - sometimes the laundry machine doors don't close all the way and it won't auto-start when you have put the correct amount of coinage in - give it an extra little twist to shut it all the way and it will start right up - also, sometimes your quarters won't be taken by the machine - you have to kind of shoot them into the machine, but if it is new or beat up, just take it up to the friendly guy at the window and he will swap it for you. Never have taken laundry in for the drop-off service - would be curious what folks think about that. read more

While traveling in DC, needed to wash a good number of clothes (it was a long trip). Unfortunately, the hotel didn't have a self-serve washer dryer. Found this place though Apple maps. Pretty straightforward experience. They give you quarters of your need it. They have multiple new washers of different sizes (the largest costing $7 per load. The dryers are like 25c for a 7.5 minute dry cycle. I did a half an hour for a dollar. Even though the dryers are older, they did the job. Good experience overall. read more

I may not be an expert on laundromats, but to me this place is ideal. Here's what I like about it: 1. For only $8 I was able to wash and dry a month's worth of clothes 2. Very friendly staff 3. Free newspapers to read 3. Telemundo is always on the TV 4. The dryers get hot as hell (especially dryer #23) which saves you time 5. I've only been on Saturdays and it hasn't been crowded 6. Dos Gringos is right across the street if you get hungry or need a cup of coffee 7. And finally the best part....they have a bowl of free condoms provided to you by a local Hispanic HIV prevention agency. And I'm not talking about crappy no-name brand condoms. 4.5 Stars. I haven't used commercial washers and dryers since living in Philly U's dormitories. While my apartment complex has laundry facilities, the machines don't take larger loads. I found Chris K's Pan American Laundry Mat review on Yelp, and went today with a massive load of towels and socks (it seriously sucks to run out of both). Pan American is located in the Hispanic dominated neighborhood of Mount Pleasant. It's next to an aging Dollar Star that reeks of mothballs and old plastic goods. (Mind you, Dollar Star is a misnomer; Most items were over $1, including a jump-start cable which ran for $12.) We went on Friday late afternoon and about three other people were there (excluding the manager), so practically all the machines were available. The change machine wasn't working, but the very friendly manager was more than happy to provide change. Bank of America is next door as well. A washer load costs $2, and the dryer is $0.25 per 7 1/2 minutes. At first, I thought $2 was a few cents too much. I remember paying about $1.25 for a load at Philly U. However, the washer machines are quick to wash your clothes through several cycles, at about 20 minutes. Curtis and I split the heap of towels into two (seemingly small) machines. Within a few minutes, we realized that the machine says "Double Load" on the front. The towels really shrank in size during washing, so we could've put the entire heap into one machine! The dryers are massive, and one can fit perhaps three loads of laundry. Of course, the more clothes you have in the dryer, the longer it will take to dry. We have a dryer rack at our apartment so we took the slightly dry towels out after 7 1/2 minutes. In only 15 minutes, our socks, t-shirts, and intimates were 98% dry. Awesome. My only quip is that Pan American has only one bench to sit on. Because the machines are quick to wash and dry clothes, Curtis and I just stood around and hung out. Not a BIG deal though. I just don't like to leave my laundry unattended for too long. I liked Pan American Laundry Mat. The facilities are clean, the staff and customers were very friendly, unoccupied machines are aplenty (I'm not sure about Sundays), and a whole month's worth of laundry can be done in less than two hours. read more

Hooray for Pan American Laundry! I don't use a laundromat because I have a washer/dryer at my house, but I've joined my friend Alexis at the Pan Am on multiple occasions for some laundry night hijinks. I couldn't imagine having a better time doing laundry. 4.5 stars. There are five things that make this place awesome: 1. It's clean. That already sets it apart from 95% of DC businesses. 2. It's open late for your late-night laundry party needs. 3. The video games ROCK! The Ms. Pac Man game is set so that she moves much faster than the ghosts, and this means you can get well beyond Act 3 on one quarter. The superhero Mortal Kombat-style fighting game had ridiculous kool graphics, and let me play for nearly 20 minutes for 50 cents even though I wasn't that great at it (secret: choose the green giant eyeball character). At least one of the games will be broken at all times, but it's a different game each time, so it's okay. There's a repairman who comes to fix them, and when I lost a quarter in one of the slots, he gave me 2 quarters as a replacement. Wow! 4. The attendant is very nice and makes change or gives you the bathroom key whenever you need it. You can join him outside for a ciggie if you like too. 5. Just like at a fine motel, there is cable TV (always on Telemundo), air conditioning, and a fine series of art prints depicting a house by a stream as it moves through various epochs of geological time. The only way they could earn a fifth star is if there was a bar attached, or some sort of a beer vending machine (keg?). Otherwise, this is the perfect laundromat. read more

Fair price, good service, great value! I've been using them for over a year now. I'm very happy! They are so much better than that place down the street next to the bakery! I use the wash and fold service. Many times they found money in my pockets and returned to me. Last week there was 15 bucks on top of my well washed and perfectly folded clothing. My washer/dryer combo is broken. So, I came here to do a few loads of laundry. It's clean, not too expensive (1.75-3.00 for wash; abt.$1 for 30 min. dry), and the machines I used all worked well. Besides getting change, I didn't have much interaction with the employees, but they seemed nice. If my washer/dryer isn't fixed by next weekend, I'll definitely come back. Update: I used the wash and fold service a couple of times. The guys that I talked to were nice, and did a good job. This is a pretty good laundromat. While obviously I would PREFER not to go off-site to clean my lovely wardrobe, this was the best option near me. Clean, not super fancy but definitely clean. Not a lot of seating, so most of us patrons were standing as we waited. But me and my lazy butt can afford to stand a little bit more. Can't beat the price, especially for DC because have you noticed everything is expensive here??!! The little man up front who sold me the detergent was also very nice in giving me quarters change for the machine and then... when he saw me struggling to figure out the machines, he left his perch and came over and walked me through it/pretty much did it for me. So grateful this place is nearby. They have a variety of washer sizes, from small to industrial size, so I come here every time a cat accidentally pees on my comforter. The place is clean (though they could clean out the place where you pour in your detergent -- you probably get a variety of past detergents with your load) and the owners are very pleasant. They get MAJOR points for the fact that they'll exchange your bills for a pre-sorted baggie of quarters, even $10 or $20! (They also sell a variety of detergent and dryer sheets, but I usually bring my own.) The biggest machines are a little expensive (only reason I'm not giving 5 stars) with the comforter-sized washer costing $6.00 for a load. Otherwise, the washers are fast (25 minutes for a load), the dryers are HUGE, and I've never had to wait for a machine, even on a weekend afternoon. They have a small bathroom they'll give you a key for, and I can usually find nearby street parking. Also, the best part is they're right across the street from Dos Gringos, so you can get some coffee and a breakfast burrito and sit on they're porch while you wait! read more

A clean, user-friendly laundry mat that offers double, triple, mega, and even jumbo load washing machines for very reasonable prices. Dryers are HUGE, and get extremely hot (hot enough to dry a Queen size comforter in about 30 minutes), at the reasonable price of 25 cents for 8 minutes. Laundry supplies (detergent, bleach, dryer sheets) are available for purchase in case you forget or run out of something. The employees are all helpful and friendly, and there is a great family vibe to the place. My apartment complex has a laundry facility but I will be back to Pan American anytime I want to wash larger items (my Queen size comforter fit in a jumbo load washer with no problem) or have a lot of laundry to do at once. This place is conveniently located in heart of Mt. Pleasant. The prices are cheap: $1.75 to wash and $1.00 to dry for 30 min. There is staff on hand to provide coins and other things you may need. Went here faithfully for two years, but never again. They are open early and late. Usually very clean and reasonable prices at $1.75 for small loads. Some machines and driers work better than others. If a machine takes your money, they are always good about reimbursing you. But, the hoards of families and children at times can be very annoying. The the last time I washed my towels and whites, it came out with bleach spots from the previous customer! Today, a customer had a puppy in the laundry mat, a big no no for people like me who can't be around animals. Then the pup jumps up and puts his paws on my knee while I'm sitting down on the bench minding my business! Hell no. No apology from the dog owner or shop owner, especially after the dog soiled my jeans with dust and such. They just lost a faithful customer here. read more

I've come here a few times, and both times, the employees were very helpful and friendly. They have change for your bills, and happily any questions you may have. One employee even offered to pour the bleach into the washer for me (I was too short to reach). They let me plug in my computer near the front as well (through the office). The commercial washer is quick - 30 minutes - and the dryers are as well. It's also cheap to wash blankets/comforters: $15-18 depending on the size. I figure it's only about $8-10 extra for them to wash it (compared to what you'd pay to wash it there yourself). It's great! read more

The 3.50 washing machines are rigged to steal your money and on top of that, they only perform a 10-second wash. Then you'll have to drag the wet clothes to another washer. Its a hassle. Stick to the 2.25 machines if you HAVE to wash here, otherwise, go to a more honest laundromat. read more
