Ace is definitely the place. I had had a rollator that had a missing knob and bolt. The company that made the rollator did not have replacement parts in its website. I went to this Ace because I was hoping there would be someone who could help. Two gentleman helped me locate the correct bolt and knob. They have an entire shelf dedicated to bolts and nuts. Within a half hour I was out the door with the rollator repaired and functioning. There was no can't do attitude here. Just great service. read more

Great store, great service, great owner. My husband and I went here because we needed a lawn mower. Not only were the employees super nice, but the owner explained everything we needed to know about the mower we were interested in. We purchased it and they even put it in the car for us. I know this will go on dead ears but i must say it. I went into the store friday morning . I needed some clips and bell wire for a Ring doorbell. The gentleman that helped me was very nice and knowledgeable. The old lady that was at register couldn't have been more igno if she actually tried. I bought a 3 a foot and clips. She wants to charge me 79cent each strand. I tell her no it's for the strip . They are all intertwined in one. Like i took the time to string them together. Mi d you i got 5 items ask me in a ignorant way want a bag. No let me carry it out cup in my gands. People have to know when to throw the towel in. She has ZERO people's skills. Super friendly staff and easy checkout. Read old reviews on bad customer service so I'd imagine they addressed this issue because every employee greeted me and my husband. A staff member noticed we were a bit lost and helped us find an item. I would rather spend money supporting a local business owner vs Home-depot. Wow this place is rude! Bought some hook fasteners Online and they were defective. Ace website says return to store which I did Sunday. Manager said you must get the refund online since you paid online. Showed him their website and he said it was wrong! Called corporate in parking lot, they called the manager and he stated I must have misunderstood him. Corporate took care of it with such a nice demeanor. Went a bit out of the way to shop here because I did have a good experience the first I went in. And I love that small hardware shop smell... something like a mix of fertilizer and metals. Hopefully you know what I'm talkin' about! I'll be honest: I was disappointed by the customer service. Like lots of people, I'm picky about it. I want to be cared for, but not smothered. I want someone to notice me walking up and down aisles with a blank look on my face and come to my rescue. But I'm not so bold as to track someone down and say I need help. It was a slow Saturday afternoon, and as I wandered, I heard the two clerks talking about the merits of Final Destination movies. Since I couldn't really find what I was looking for, it just started to aggravate me that no one was helping. And I was kinda obvious - I was walking around with a big scoop shovel. In all I had about $50 worth of stuff in my hands, but I put it away and left. No one stopped me as I walked out the door. I kinda do yelp for one reason: to help small businesses thrive. Does that mean always giving 5 stars. It shouldn't. Perhaps 2 can help just as much. I really like Ace, I want to support your store. If I just want hardware, I could go to a big box that also doesn't care for me. But if you're a small biz, your number 1 product is service, and that's what I'm there for. read more

When I worked at Home Depot years ago, we were taught to make sure that we sold the customer everything for their project or else they will go to Ace to complete the project. With the added comment, even though the price may be higher. Comparing Ace service the big boys, Menards has been and still is the worst for service and Home Depot coming in second due to their lack of employees to help customers. When you walk into Ace you see several employees right awat and they will ask if you need help. Stopped into the Palos Ace over the weekend to get several things and true to form I walked out with everything I was shopping for that day. But what I really like here is the key counter. Every key that I have gotten here WORKS! They have the needed blanks and know how to use the key cutter. I have to gone locksmith stores were if they mock you for having a cheap or foriegn lock, they haven't got the blanks. Ace is the place. read more

He yelled at my dad, called him a piece of shit in the store, told him to get the hell out. And then followed out to his car, and got within 2 inches of his face and called him an f*ucking idiot. 1. Have shopped at a number of Ace Hardware stores over the years and have always been pleased with the prices, service, etc. However, this particular Ace Hardware should be avoided if at all possible. This assessment, by the way, is based on more than one visit, as it wouldn't be fair otherwise. Anyway, each time I have been there, the staff has been rude and not helpful in the least. Whatever service there has been, has been provided begrudgingly. To make matters worse, one senses they are proud of this behavior. Went in to Palos Ace Hardware earlier today to get an Allen wrench and a threaded screw to repair a chair that had fallen apart. A young man, didn't get his name, but early 20's I'm guessing helped me. I wasn't sure if the screw I had brought with me, to get the right size Allen wrench, was metric or standard. He measured the thread size and length of the screw, and while they didn't have the exact length I needed, we went with with one slightly longer and some washers to make up the difference. I got home, completed the repair, and the chair is as good as new!! This whole purchase was only around $2.25, but the young man helped me solve my problem. The manager of this store, Jim Bishop, is unprofessional and rude. He tried to rip us off and when we corrected him, he got angry and nasty with us like it was our fault that he's and uncouth individual. I give this store two stars because the other times I have been there, the other employees are very nice and try their best to help answer questions and provide good service. However, it's a shame that they are managed by such an awful person who made our experience there a terrible one that we don't intend to repeat. read more

Had an emergency visit for a plumbing problem at my daughters house. I have been in this store numerous times before and never had a problem. It was late in the day and I asked an employee, Bob for help to find a PVC drain tail piece. Bob had no idea what I needed and kept pointing me to the wrong items. So, after ten minutes of trying to be nice to him I had what I needed. I then asked him if he could cut the PVC to 7", he said no. I asked if I was in a hardware store and why he couldn't cut the PVC. He said it is store policy not to cut them. I couldn't believe it because I have had steel pipe, glass, metal and other items cut there before. I went to the cash register and explained to the cashier what happened and that this was an emergency repair and I couldn't get to my tools to cut the pipe. She called the manager who turned out to be Bob. Things got worse. He now was aggravated and told me "I told you I wont Cut the PVC". I explained I am in a bind and need help. He said I will sell you a hack saw or I will charge you 10 bucks to cut it. I placed all the items in his hands and drove to Menards where the sales clerk immediately agreed to cut the pipe without a problem. Was this about wanting to over charge me Bob? Or were you just too lazy to take a minute and cut the plastic for a regular customer in need? I left my phone number with the cashier and asked if the owner would call me to discuss Bobs rude behavior. It has been a week and I've yet to get a call from the owner and doubt I will.. What a shame!! I have been a customer at this store for 25years and I will not return. read more

I purchased a 5ft. length of carpet runner yesterday at $2.79 a foot. I didn't watch closely enough while the man measured and cut the runner because I get home and it is only 4ft. 6 1/2in. I live 20 miles away so I am not driving back for a refund and will find some other use for this. I will not go back to this store as they can't even perform the simple task of measuring a piece of carpet runner and I have been shorted $1.39 plus tax. Beware and double check anything that has been cut before leaving the store. read more

I haven't been there for over a year now, because every time I go I end up getting aggravated. The men working there often give you an attitude unless you are making a purchase. Apparently the older gentleman who works there has no idea what products are on their web sight. K&S 1/16" stainless rod comes in a package of 2 pcs. @ $2.49 (87131)# 35203823. They are not $2.49 each or $4.98 for 2pcs. I bought the one, but got ripped off by this guy insisting it was only for one at $2.49. I have always been a fan of Ace, I worked for a different one in my late teens, I'm extremely handy and know exactly what I'm shopping for, but it always amazes me that I can go in to get a lost nut or bolt and have someone practically waiting at the door to take the one I have and walk me to the isle, go to the correct bin, check the thread size- try it, bag it and thank me for my .06 purchase. Try to get that service from a big box. For those of you who complain about the prices- please read... 1) Yes, prices can be a little higher, but your likely supporting a franchise owner who has a family, lives in the community and supports local teams and charities. Not a corporate giant-Service is also no comparison. If you don't support these little gems of local, they will be gone forever. 2) Know what your buying. I bought a freeze proof spigot from a big box (made in China, because pretty much everything at a big box is) it lasted 1 season and the plastic knob broke off. Went back to buy a replacement knob- they changed the stock and did not carry it anymore, after an attempt to get the correct replacement knob at the big box, I found it at Palos Heights Ace. Well the next year the freeze proof spigot rotted inside and the water flow was that of a trickle- even after cleaning the stem cavity. As much as I did not want to replace the spigots again, I went back to Ace- Found made in USA freeze proof spigots for $2 more than big box. It's been 5 years and they work like new! Went here as they sent me a $5 off coupon and than proceeded to charge my credit card twice as they couldn't take the charge off. Asked to speak to the manager and he was afraid of the cashier. Complained to ACE corporate and it took them weeks to get back to me to tell me that the owner said I had treated them rudely. Clearly if you are a person of color you get treated differently than if you are lilly white! AVOID!!! read more

Wow, was just in the store for a particular brand of window Christmas decorations. Store had a wider selection than other Ace stores in the area however price was $7.00 higher. When I asked the clerk to ask the manager if he would honor the lower price, he declined. I was going to buy all they had. I purchased a Weber grill from their Lemont store, and I asked for free assembly and delivery because Lowes offered this. I was told they will see what can be done, and they would get back to me. I paid for the grill and left. Approximately a week later I received a phone call asking if I could take delivery. I said yes, but no one showed up. Several days later I stopped in the store to get a status update. I was told by the employee that he has to make a phone call. After 15 minutes he came out of the back room and said it can be delivered next Monday. On that Monday, I received a call; and I was told I had to pay $50 for the delivery. While I didn't care for the charge, I was willing to pay it because I usually try to support Lemont based businesses. So I offered to give them my credit card information over the phone. He refused me and said I could pay cash upon delivery, or I could stop in the store and pay in advance with my credit card. I chose to stop in the store, cancel my order and get full credit. Upon returning home I made a PHONE call to Lowes and used my credit card to order the grill for the same price Ace wanted, and I received free assembly and delivery. My issue is not the fifty bucks. It is the complete lack of customer care. It took me approximately 5 minutes to accomplish with Lowes what Ace could not, or would not, do in over two weeks. read more

Went to Ace Hardware because I needed a small light bulb for a under the sink light. I brought in the package from the previous one I had bought. The ace helper told me which one I needed and gave it to me. When I got home the light bulb was the wrong size. When I brought it back to Ace to exchange for another one,they said they would not exchange it as I had opened the package. How was I to to know this was the wrong light until I saw it did not fit in my lamp. and the Ace helper had told me it was the right one. I went to Menards where they gave me the proper light and if I had a problem could return it for another size. I have gone to this Ace for many years. Will not go again read more

Needed to change my sump pump and stopped into Ace. Got the help I needed with instructions on how to go about it. Didn't think it was too complicated but the associate also shared with me what I might encounter and how to deal with it. Ended up also changing a back-flow valve and installing a well pit cover.
