Co Owner and family catching up

Madame CJ Walker stated " Don't sit down and wait for opportunities to come --- get up and make them" -- The owners of Palm's DSM did just that (Manifesting the Dream) by going from a food truck to a brick and mortar building at 19th & Ingersoll. The unique dishes of African & Jamaican fusion is -- unique to the DSM area -- served up in succulent braised oxtails and deliciously seasoned Jollof Rice, Jerk Chicken and banging Coconut Candied Yams (An acquired taste needed). My wait staffer (Izzy) and the owner schooled me on the special seasoning used for each entree which gave me a new appreciation of African & Jamaican Fusion Cuisine which I added to my list of newly acquired taste explorations. Each dish was eye appealing, the colorful mod decor was environmentally comforting, the spacious seating and safe surroundings made one stay in a "zen" mood while indulging in the delicious well portioned meal. The prices are above moderate ($$) and the welcoming environment is top notch for all types of social gatherings. If you are looking for something new for a meet and greet, date night or a one on one meet up this would be a good spot to hang out and enjoy the " friendly Caribbean neighborhood vibe."

Ok me and a coworker was trying to get something good today and we looked up the best Jamaican in Des Moines Iowa . I am from NJ originally and lived in Atalanta for 29 years so I know good food. So let me start with the owner and the young lady behind the counter . They were both ever friendly. They were Liberian/ Jamaican. Very small menu but when I tell you the execution was on Point, I Ned the food was going to be good when we pulled up and the grilled jerked wings smelled amazing that were still cooking on the grill. The place is so pretty and super clean. The decorations a very Afrocentric. This place is a ten out of ten. The food was cooked perfectly. Seasoning on point.

Black excellence at its finest. I love the ambiance, the customer service was great, the food was very tasty and so were the drinks, only reason for not a 5 star was for the macaroni and cheese, would love more seasoning it was a bit bland, I will for sure be back again.

Tried Palms DSM and it absolutely lives up to the reputation they built before opening their restaurant. We ordered the honey suya wings and coconut curry wings, and my friend got the jerk wings. Every flavor was excellent, but my favorites were the coconut curry and the jerk. The jerk has real flavor and a little spice, but it is not overpowering. It is approachable for people who do not love heat, while still being bold and satisfying. If you like it hotter, you can easily add sauce and take it up a notch. The flavors across the board were layered, balanced, and genuinely well thought out, not just "spicy for the sake of being spicy." I also had the candied yams and rice and peas, and both were seasoned beautifully. Same theme here. Nothing bland, nothing heavy-handed. Just really well-executed food with a sophisticated flavor profile. What really matters though is this: these guys know what they are doing. They did not just wake up and open a restaurant. They spent over six years at the farmers market, building a following and refining their food before ever opening a brick-and-mortar. That experience shows in the consistency, the confidence, and the execution. The atmosphere and branding are also worth calling out. The space feels intentional, custom, and like a real experience. The staff was professional and prompt, and the owner was there on a Sunday. He was friendly, passionate, and clearly hands-on. You can tell this is a hardworking local family business that actually cares about doing things right. If I had one suggestion, it would be to add a vegetable or greens option as a side, since the current sides lean more carb-based. If you are unsure whether this is your kind of food, go anyway. If you like chicken, you will like Palms DSM. This is not a risky try. They have already proven themselves, and the food is genuinely great.

Upon arrival I was the first to come into the restaurant which is nice. I had a plethora of options to sit at. Once I sat down I was greeted with fresh water and was told the waiter would be with me shortly. Less than 3 minutes later my waiter arrived with menu in hand. I took a while to order since everything sounded so good so I ordered the jerk wings and jollof rice with a DSM sunset drink and a coke soda. My drinks came fast both checked the sweet category. Moments later my food arrived now as a person who thrives in eating Jamaican food I will say the wings had a nice smoke to them. The jerk sauce was not spicy very sweet but overall a nice flavor. The rice had a nice light flavor that was not overpowering. Overall I would rate the food an 8/10 which is good for restaurant quality. I understand that the chef couldn't make the food that spicy due to being comfortable for everyone's palate but I'm pleased. When I'm in town I would love to taste other options. Oh and also they play really nice music, a mixture of genres which was surprising for a Afro Caribbean restaurant.

I've been going to the Palms ever since they started their food truck. Their new restaurant is perfectly set up with great parking in the back. The decor and music creates a perfect ambiance. The staff is quick and friendly, and the restaurant feels like home. The food was great as usual, the oxtail spiced and tender, plantains soft and sticky, and the rice and beans well spiced and goes well with the oxtail. Going from food truck to restaurant can be tough but they hit it out of the park. Must try, and my new spot!

What I found was a little gem off of one of the main roads in downtown Des Monies. Even before you enter this self described "Tiki Bar" you see all the brick buildings, and then you see an actual grass covered roof...yep that's the place and a really nice touch. The interior is equally cool and spacious, you are greeted by the bar area immediately when you walk in. To your right are comfy couches and instagram friendly neon wall signs, with that signature tiki touch of floral patterns and great lighting. The location is connected to a Asian food restaurant, so they get their food from them as you drink some of the most well crafted adult drinks I've had in a while. I came for happy hour on a Saturday 4:00pm-6:30pm. The drinks were basically 2.00 off with discounted food, the menu is limited to mostly chicken wraps and crab rangoons etc. I will say the portions were filling and very delicious. The star of the show was my El Colmillo, a tequila based drink with lime, orange juice, lime. The bartender did say it's all pre mixed, and that day she subbed the tequila with Casamigos, because the house tequila was out. Customer service was great, until it wasn't. Our server was excellent, until a guy came in off break and they seemed to have some tension. She really didn't have that same positive energy as before, otherwise an overall excellent experience. Pro Tip: Take a walk over to "Hello, Marjorie", it's a completely different vibe but drinks there are just as good...if not better. Go see Travis, he is 10/10 at "Hello, Marjorie".

Incredible flavors, theming - this is art and storytelling through cocktail. The ice cream on the cake was the sample ice cream flavors we got to sample. I'm not exaggerating to say this was also some of the best ice cream I've ever tasted. I'm legitimately and justifiably upset that I can't buy it anyway to have it again. The atmosphere is fun too, but the cocktails and the obvious time and passion that go into them are the draw. This is not a place where the theming outshines the drinks, I'd be blown away by these offerings even in a brightly-lit Chuck-e-Cheese. Most of the seating here seemed to be targeted towards large groups so there wasn't a ton of option for a party of 2. We did not have a reservation so there was only 1 high top area that was honestly super uncomfortable. I would recommend making a reservation if you want a chance to sit at one of the lower chair areas. The biggest issue was the service. It took over 20 minutes for anyone to come over and take our drink order. This is a newer spot so I'm hopeful things can improve. It was super loud and not the most inviting space. Some of the seating was a bit awkward with spacing. The drinks were small but I would expect that for a higher end cocktail. For DSM, I did think some of the drinks seemed a bit expensive. The drinks were okay but seemed pretty weak where they were super juice heavy. Overall I would probably not come back unless I had friends who haven't been and wanted to try it. Super bummed as I do think there is potential here but need to work through some of these issues.
