Pimento Mac and cheese with blackened chicken

Exceptional service and ambiance. Wait staff are knowledgeable and helpful with cocktail and food choices. I had the pimiento Mac and cheese with blackened chicken. Absolute heaven! However, the portion size was HUGE and I was full for the next 24 hours even though I ate less than half! Two more lunches I'm sure! My friends enjoyed the blackened catfish, jambalaya, and chicken and waffles. No notes!

The food was delicious and truly surpassed my expectations. I didn't think Iowa food could compare to real southern food but I stand corrected. Every plate from Bubbas was flavorful and authentic. I will have to say the fried green tomatoes appetizer is a must try. I'm addicted and my mouth waters just thinking about them. Everyone's salads were flavorful and well balanced. The gumbo surpassed expectations and even had perfectly cooked okra in it. 10/10 highly recommend. You can't beat $6 drinks on happy hour either.

WE LOVE STEAK NIGHT!!! Every week I find myself craving bubba steak night.. 19 dollars for a steak and two sides?! You can't go wrong! Also, the salmon salad has to be my favorite in DSM. The sweet potatoes and dried cranberries make it sweet, and the apple cider vinaigrette perfectly balances it :) Thank you bubba!

Visiting the city for a work trip and came here for dinner the first night. Authentic southern food but also had plenty of healthy options! It was so cute inside and they had a full bar. The food was delicious, and our server decent - she really opened up at the end and ended up being great.

In town, but downtown and with all the lane closures and switches take a break -- meter park for less than two dollars at the front door of " Bubba's" -- for some exquisite comfort food that includes blackened catfish -- all at a cost ($$). The decor is upscale even though you may dress as comfortable as you like from casual to business social. The bar master -- Jordan -- extraordinaire, is masterful at offering suggestions on dishes that suites your needs as well as suggestions on what's popular. What to be pampered then stop in and enjoy what's reminiscent of southern charm.

Our group of 13 sat upstairs. Everyone was very friendly about getting the reservation set up and then adjusted to our actual size. We had drinks & appetizers: fritters, bread bowls, deviled eggs & corn dip. They were all good but the fritters were unassuming. Too much breading. The corn muffins were delicious! I think they were understaffed: one side of our table was served their dinners 5 to 7 minutes before the other half. Then, a dessert was served to our celebrating couple but no one was offered dessert. The food was good! Our waitress was great. Chicken, a steak, chicken fried steak, jambalaya, meatloaf, and catfish were enjoyed by everyone. The green beans weren't edible--too undercooked. Friend said her asparagus wasn't good either. The Brussels sprouts were tasty! Mashed potatoes were yummy. Bubba is a great place to go!!

The six of us dined in on a Saturday afternoon and shared the following: 1) Crab cake 2) Shrimp and crawfish fritters 3) Fried green tomatoes 4) Buttermilk fried chicken, half bird with mashed potatoes and crispy Brussel sprouts 5) Crispy succotash-stuffed chile relleno It was a lot of fried food but we had to make the most of it for our last meal in Des Moines before heading home to Chicago. I thought everything was delicious although I also wished there was a bit more kick and spice to some of the dishes. I really enjoyed the hot honey sauce that came with the fried chicken.

When you get told you are going to a place called Bubba, this is definitely not what you are picturing. Southern comfort food meets upscale dining at this place and it is excellent. The chicken fried steak is divine and paired perfectly with the mashed potatoes and green beans. Great cocktail selection and a perfect dirty martini. Lauren was a great waitress and gave us lots of recs on other places to try as we are from out of town. 10/10 recommend!

Went here on date night for my wife's birthday. The ambiance is the restaurant is incredible. Were able to take us in 30 minutes before our reservation which was nice. They have a two floor dining area. I had the fried chicken for my entree and the chicken was very juicy but I feel that the breading was too much. Not sure if too thick was the word. But the breading was somewhat overwhelming. Was a good experience and will probably be back.

Went here on date night for my birthday. The ambiance is the restaurant is fancy & upscale. They were able to take us in 30 minutes before our reservation which was nice. They have a two floor dining area, we were on the second floor. My husband had the fried chicken and the chicken was very juicy but he felt that the breading was too much. Not sure if too thick was the word. But the breading was somewhat overwhelming. My shrimp and grits were good, nothing fantastic but a great simple meal. The deviled eggs were the stand out of the entire night! Was a good experience and will probably be back. Would highly recommend reservations! Parking can be difficult as it's all metered street parking.

Jennifer waited on me and was a joy to speak to and offered great recommendations on the whole menu (bottom line, sounds like you can't go wrong). The 'bee dust' is a nice twist on adding honey to your chicken, it's a dehydrated honey/pepper combo that adds a great flare. Everything just seemed to take longer than necessary. We stood at the front maybe 10 minutes before anyone came to seat us and food took even longer, around 25 minutes (figuring out our order maybe took ten). I parked the meter for an hour and had to go refill. I ordered the Grilled Harvest Chicken. There is a creamy tomato pasta used to coat the chicken breasts. The cuts were good overall. This dish also includes two sides. I got the fried okra and goat cheese grits. Fried okra was good, around thirty percent breading that makes a nice savory balance. The grits were creamy and smooth. I think I would come again if I was looking for heavy southern. There were a lot of classic options to choose from that I could not try this time around. Though I would still be concerned with the wait involved.

The Ultimate Stop for Bikes, Beer & Bites…read more After a day of biking, we made it back to El Bait Shop with some friends. This place is a solid choice, whether you're in the mood for the world's biggest selection of tap beers or some fantastic gastropub and comfort food from the lounge next door. We love it here because we can park our bikes in the provided area off the patio and still keep an eye on them. The outdoor service area is semi-shaded and the service is just as good as you'd get inside. As a beer lover, I can tell you the selection is ridiculous and expansive. If you want it, they probably have it, and from four or five different breweries at that! The menu is also loaded, with choices from both El Bait Shop and the High Life Lounge. Today, our food order was as impressive as the beer list. While I can't recall all the beers we had, the food included a Prime Rib Sandwich with tots ($14.99), the Pizza Burger also with tots ($11.99), the Philly Style Pot Roast Sandwich with a side of potato salad, and a massive bowl of Macaroni and Cheese ($11.99). We were starving after our ride, but that didn't change the fact that the food was all delicious, well-prepared, and served by our very attentive waiter, Kyle???, May. No one had any complaints, and the beer was cold and on time! Overall, we love the eclectic vibe of this place. Its downtown location gives you some great views, and more importantly, you're within walking distance of almost everything downtown Des Moines has to offer. This is a go-to spot for me, and I love taking first-time visitors here because it's so unique and the quality of both the service and the food is always on point. Oh, and did I mention the beer selection is completely insane? If you haven't been here yet, you are missing out, and you don't even know it. PRO TIP: Come here, and before you leave, slip over to the High Life Lounge for a throwback moment. Next time, start there and slip over here for a beer!

I had the Old Fashioned with brown sugar, orange bitters, angostura bitters, and bourbon. It's pretty sweet and smooth Old Fashioned. Very nice start and enjoyable. Decided on the CFD Burger, a double smash with American Cheese, Shaved Onion, Pickles, and Clyde's Burger Sauce. I really like the shaved onion and it gave the beef a really nice flavor. First bites were very good, but the bun became too much and the sauce in the middle too heavy. Became hard to finish. I had to ditch some bun and would get the sauce on the side. Not terrible, just not my jam. I would get the sauce on the side or try ketchup/ mustard instead. The bun is just really thick and heavy. Just not a good ratio. The fries were just ok for me and not exciting. This restaurant also has the 3% fee if you use a credit card. I checked the receipt and gave a hundred dollars and asked for change. I included a picture of the receipt. I got thirty in cash back, 5 singles, a 5, and 2 tens. I am ok with not giving the change of coins, but rounding it up and keeping the 3% fee made me feel like integrity has went down hill. Yes it's less than 5 dollars and I know the haters will say what's the big deal. Well it's a neat way to make extra cash at the customers expense. They don't remove the fee and they keep a few dollars. That's not an accident and it feels like theft. I had left $12 for the tip, but after a review I left 10% due to dishonest customer service. What's the point of paying cash on these if you still get charged? Some have said it's leftover from the Covid Days. How many restaurants are doing a 3% fee? Yes, I know it's supposed to cover the CC fee, but it is obviously not if you are paying cash. This just feels really crooked and wrong. Yes it is a very small amount, just over $4, but if you do that how many times, how many days, over a year it definitely adds up. Not sure I would go back. No I didn't talk to a manager or anyone. I had a show to catch and wasn't going to ruin a night over a fee and be late. Just be aware of the fees when paying cash. Really feel the 3% fee just makes restaurants look bad and provides more problems than it solves. Why not add a 6% fee for lights and gas next?
