My husband and I came into town to see our son at college and take him to dinner for his birthday. We made our reservation for 6:15 at about 4:30. The restaurant did not open until 5. We were pretty excited about it, because it was a birthday dinner, and our son had spent the last summer in Peru for an internship and was eager to try this out. We showed up at 6, and it was obvious we weren't going to be able to get in early, which was fine. My husband waited to check in, while my son and I waited in the car, since there is no waiting area and barely any room, especially since some other diners were waiting as well, presumably for their 6 pm reservation. It was clear it would be awhile, since the tables were all still full. Around 6:15, another group crammed their way into the small entryway. At 6:30, they had some empty tables, so they finally acknowledged everyone waiting. The 6:30 group asked for their table, and my husband interjected to say we had a 6:15 reservation. The host informed him that we were not on his list and did not have a reservation. My husband showed them our confirmation email and the OpenTable app we used. The host stated that he does not check for more reservations after 5 pm and we clearly had made the reservation too late. (Note: I said we did it at 4:30, so this was clearly not when he looked). The host informed my husband that there was no reservation, and we would not be seated, and he didn't care that we had a reservation since it clearly was made too late. My husband protested, and the host turned his back to him and walked off shaking his head. We were not seated, and he did not return. So we did not get dinner. My advice to you: Making a reservation here will not guarantee you will be seated or served. We had to find somewhere else to eat for my son's birthday, and all the other options we had turned down for this one were booked. Also, they are bad at estimating dining times. They will not acknowledge you until there are open tables, even to check you in, and you may wait for some time after your scheduled reservation. read more

Thankful for this dining experience, as it combined great food, a unique menu, and excellent customer service. I suggest getting reservations, but we were able to get a table for four walking in early on a Saturday. Never felt rushed throughout. Unbelievably good Lomo Saltado, and sampled each of my family's dishes. While flipping through instagram today, I came across a post from Panka Peruvian Restaurant letting customers know that their restaurant had fallen on hard times and asking for support. With only a workout class planned, I decided that my Tuesday evening would be better spent at Panka. While I have only been there a few times, I have had only positive experiences and was introduced to Peruvian cuisine through Panka. I started with a Pisco Sour which was delicious and went down entirely too easily.  For an appetizer, I order the Empanadas de Aji de Gallina. Perfectly fried, the dish came out with six empanadas that I was sure would provide me leftovers for the next day. As I started diving through empanadas, I quickly realized that this was a dish that had no hope for tomorrow, and was to be enjoyed fully in the present. The cheesy, slightly nutty filling with shredded chicken was a more complex variation to the typical beef pastries that I have enjoyed.  Next, I gave the attentive and friendly waiter, Freddy, several choices that I was considering which were quite different from one another. Freddy must have known that I was seeking validation for wanting soup in 94 degree weather, because he suggested the Parihuela. This soup was extraordinary and everything I was craving: creamy, comforting, with a nice spice and full (I mean full) of shrimp, fish, octopus, and muscles.  The experience was a 10/10. If you haven't been, you are in for a true culinary experience. Panka, on Ingersoll, is always one of my favorite restaurants to be at. We've become a bit of a regular as their food, service, ambience are always on point. The people here make you feel very at home. All for under $50 my husband and I were able to take advantage of their bottomless mimosas and delicious brunch meals that left us both full and happy -- And yes they were truly bottomless!!! I went to eat yesterday and the experience was not very good, the rice with seafood only had shrimp, I should call it rice with shrimp. Like the parihuela, it only had shrimp, not even fish, apart from the fact that it is a bit expensive and the tip is included. I really like Peruvian food and I went with my family to have a nice time but the experience was not very good, I hope you can improve that. read more

The food was really very good. Got the Piqueo Peruano sampler appetizer. My wife not a fan of raw fish but I loved it. Great sample of Peruvian foods. She got the Arroz Chaufa De Cerdo which she said was some of if not the best rice she remembers having. I had the Creole dish Aji De Gallina. Phenomenal. We did not finish it rather we saved the rest for the next day. The service was great. Not too much and not too little. We were there at 6:30 with a reservation and it was fairly busy. The outside is very unassuming and we would never assume it was as nice and well appointed as it was. Our cocktails came in very cool unique glassware. My wife was quite hungry, so we thought we would quickly resolve that and try out some $5 apps during Happy Hour. While the first external impression was a little negative (store front came across as a fast-foodish), we immediately felt better after stepping inside - very nice atmosphere and bustling with activity. Long story short...we arrived just before 6pm on a Friday, didn't have a reservation, were told it would be "5 minutes" - then proceeded to wait 50 minutes before we were seated. We thought we would help the time pass by enjoying a cocktail, so asked the primary server about ordering a drink (behind the bar seating area is food preparation only and no bartender). He said he would be back "in a second" to take our order, but never did return. Other than cooking, bussing tables and table clean up, he was the only one doing everything else in the service area of the restaurant. While he was very friendly, pleasant and apologetic - he clearly could not keep up with all of the demands of the customers and made some mistakes. If he would have help on the service side, they clearly could move more people through (all told, we spent 2 hours and 20 minutes there) and increase their revenues while providing better service. Now onto the good part - the food and drinks were FANTASTIC (see pictures for menus and food / drinks)! I did make one mission trip to Peru that was quite enjoyable and introduced me to ceviche and pisco sours - but have not have the opportunity to sample a lot of their cuisine. For starters, I ordered a Pisco Sour (see picture) and it was delicious - very foamy egg white on top and the cinnamon / presentation was great! For appetizers, we ordered Chicharron de Pescado and Causa de Pollo (see pictures). I absolutely loved the Causa mashed potato / chicken salad / avocado stack and the Pescado was also very good. For our dinner, my wife and I shared Cremoso Ceviche (see picture) and Arroz Norteno (see picture). As our 5* rating implies, we loved both of them - as the name implies, the ceviche sauce was a bit creamy and the Arroz dish was fresh and very tasty. If you read my reviews, you know I love sweets - so the meal wasn't complete without Alfajores Peruanos (see picture) for dessert. Again, it is highly recommended - the soursop ice cream is best described as unique (the first word used by both my wife and myself) and the caramel cookies were great - caramelly, yet not too sweet. Do not go here unless you have reservations (the place was packed and stayed so until less than an hour before closing when we were there) or go during a less-busy time. If you do that and are patient with the service, you will definitely not be disappointed with the food! As the pictures show, the presentation is fantastic and it tastes every bit as good as it looks - I highly recommend the food and cocktails! Amazing food and service! My husband and I dined here for our anniversary and it did not disappoint. We had the yummy yucca appetizers and chicharrone pescado- fried fish. The arroz Norteno with beautiful cilantro flavor and Pescado a lo macho de camarones was perfect and spicy - shrimp melted in your mouth. We loved the special Peruvian pisco sour cocktails. The location is unassuming and low-key, and wedged between two other more mainstream restaurants. You could miss it if you walk too fast. But inside its quite nice, little fancy even. At first I was a little disappointed in the lack of vegetarian options; ultimately I was quite pleased. Its pretty expensive to eat there. However the food is both exquisitely delicious and presented so well, in true Peruvian form. We were all very impressed and recommend to anyone looking for something different. Definitely a place to try out! I would also say it's a great first date place too. The atmosphere is causal but romantic too. For the food we got the Lomo Saltado, Chicharron DE Pez y Camaron, Aji DE Gallina, and the "Sigh of the Woman". The Chcharron is highly recommended! You won't be disappointed! It was flaky, soft, tender, a bit of salty savory. The sauce has a bit of kick to it and paired with picked onions! It was perfectly made. The Lomo Saltado was savory with a bit of sweetness to it. The beef cooked perfectly, it wasn't tough or dry, it was bouncy and tender. The Aji DE Gallina reminds me of a curry dish. The chicken is so tender that it is shredded in the curry lentil base and the potatoes we soft and tender. It's sweet, savory, seasoned with spices. It got spicy at all. Finally the "Sigh of the Woman" was a beautiful end to the dinner. It's sweet, silky, and a burst of carnal flavor was wonderful. It's like a pudding version of flan and tres Leches cake! I give this place 3.5 stars. I was going to give it three stars but my husband really liked his dish a lot, hence the extra half star. I ordered the Arroz Chaufa de Cerdo and my husband got the Salmon Oriental. I don't know what I was expecting but I guess I thought I would be getting something less Asian-y and more Peruvian with South American flavors. My dish was basically Asian fried rice with pork like I could get at an upscale Chinese restaurant. It was supposed to have ginger in it, which is why I ordered it, but I couldn't taste any ginger in it at all. It was good but nothing spectacular. My husband liked the creamy rice in his dish a lot. He said he would order it again. The place looks very nice and sophisticated inside. It's not very big but it had around 10-12 small tables plus seating at the counter. It's cute and cozy. However, it was freezing inside and it felt like the heat wasn't working. I had my down jacket on during the entire meal and I was still cold. My feet were like blocks of ice. I couldn't wait to finish my meal so I could get out of there and warm up. The food was ok, but for the prices they're charging, I expected better. Loved this place!! I'm Peruvian myself and I went to Iowa for work, it happens to be the "insurance capital" of the US. I was VERY surprised there was a Peruvian restaurant in the area, I was a little bit hesitant to go, afraid that it might not be authentic. I was PLEASANTLY SURPRISED!! This place sounded pretty amazing, so I made dinner reservations for our brief trip to Des Moines. I highly recommend it since it is a small and very popular place. I will note that despite the hot summer days, they do not provide ice with water unless you ask. There were also no free plantain chips and dip like mentioned in other reviews (on any table, so just do not expect it). Everything sounded good on the menu, so we leaned on our server a bit for suggestions. We ended up ordering two appetizers: the chicken empanadas and the salmon oriental tiradito. They were both delicious! The empanadas came out super hot, and the tiradito had ponzu, sesame oil, and green onions, lots of Lisa favorites! For entrees, we got lomo saltado (which had chunks of potatoes rather than fries in case you are used to fries) and arroz chaufa con mariscos. I ate some of Eric R.'s rice to try octopus, but he preferred his rice and I preferred my lomo saltado. It had a nice grill kind of flavor even in the sauce! Catching up with a friend and wanted to try out this IG perfect restaurant. Let me tell you, I had no idea this place even existed, but it was incredible! 28th and Ingersoll, parking on the street in front or in the parking lot next to the sandwich place. The place has the most chill, just beautiful, ambiance. Think almost bohemian with very calming neutrals and woods with just enough metallics to catch any eye. It really is extraordinary! Also, the fragrant flavors when you first walk in kept us sitting at the bar area, watching and mesmerized when I'm totally a patio gal and today was perfect for chilling outside, but I was so drawn into the cooking and the atmosphere inside. And the menu is on these super cute wood blocks! I can't even with this, so fun! I selected the Imaginery (glass of Chardonnay), it was delightful but the sangria was great and double the size. Not complaining but next time I'm trying the sangria for sure! We each selected a few items and told the waiter pick for us because they all looked so good! We honestly figured with as great as the pics look, they had a good photographer- uh no the food really does look that incredible when plated! Of my choices, the waiter selected Pescado A Lo Macho De Camarones for me. (Pictured with yellow). It's a mahi mahi with shrimp in a creamy spicy sauce with white rice. Sooooo good! It's so hard to describe the flavor but it's not overpowering of the fish and yet just enough flavor to make it fabulous! My friend got the Beef Tallarin Saltado. It's such a aesthetically appealing dish, but held tons of flavor packed in every bite! We both had more than plenty food and each left stuffed with plenty of left overs. The food is worth every penny of the average price $25-35 meals, but if you want to try it without spending that much, you can easily split a meal. I was so excited to try this restaurant based on the reviews and great photos. Picked up To Go order on Sunday - wasted $80! Partially greeted by a server who ran to the back of the restaurant to grab my order. I followed him because I left off Dessert and wanted to order. I asked him about the Passionfruit cheesecake and he responded "we're out of that" really? On a Sunday at 5:00 pm with a full seated restaurant. BS! He just wanted me out of the restaurant immediately. Arroz Con Mariscos - looked nothing like the photos online. Shrimp were small and the rest of the seafood looked grayish in color. Langostinos Melcocha - Crunchy jumbo shrimp missing the shrimp..?! The panko was burnt and greasy and the shrimp was so thin I'm not even sure if shrimp was used. The vegetables were limp and the entire dish was worth $6 instead of $33. I should have taken photos as a warning to others but the food was so disgusting that it went in the garbage immediately. I have never been to Des Moines so wasn't sure what they had to offer as far as the food scene. Came for a girls trip and had a little list of places that sounded decent, this was one of them. It doesn't look like much walking up to it, and the waiting area to be seated is non existent, you are crowded right next to the door and in the way of people coming and going. Once seated they have very nice chairs and booths. Our server (sorry can't remember his name) looked to be 15 (I'm sure he was older) was amazing!! There were 5 of us and one friend chugs her water in one gulp about every 5 mins, this young man was on top of it, her glass was never empty more than 30 seconds. We didn't look at menu prices before hand and I think we were allittle surprised that the prices for each entree were close to $30. Our server had many suggestions, which I love. After getting out food we were pleasantly surprised, everyone thoroughly enjoyed our selections. I got the tacu tacu con Lomo Saltado and the dessert which I shared with the taco but wish I didn't, It was so good and I wanted more just for ME! My entree was seasoned perfectly, the steak was tender, the tomatoes were fresh, it was perfect. I barely ever eat my entire meal at a restaurant and always take leftovers, with this I literally saved one bite to bring home. I almost gave 5 stars but the waiting area to be seated was off-putting and also there were a couple items on the menu that I was told they didn't have and I said why and was told they didn't know, that's odd to me-remove them from menu, it's an online menu. Nice to have a quality Peruvian place here in Des Moines! Menu is pretty satisfying, with a mix of ceviches, tiraditos, and causas, plus other classics like lomo saltado, etc. The selection of ceviches and tiraditos was great. Had the cremoso and then the pulpo tiradito. I must say they were both a bit sauce heavy, but the octopus was impressive: it's all about the perfect texture and every bite was tender without any hint of rubberiness that often comes with octopus. Wine list was pretty good, too. My pisco sour was a bit on the sweet side, but I should have probably asked for no syrup. Nice dining room with a lot of natural light and great contemporary decor. Don't be fooled by it being sandwiched between Pancheros (lol) and (I forget what, something like Pancheros) and being situated in a strip mall (where else can you put restaurants like this? They serve plantains with a semi spicy aioli and it was light and a favorite around the table! The fried appetizer lightly breaded and also delicious. You couldn't find the chicken among the fish and shrimp. The brien sauce had a tiny bit more spice. I loved the pesto and I hate pesto! The martini glass of ceviche was Tropical. Salmon and Anguilla salad was light and the dressing was a little sweet but plenty of vinegar as well. Lomo Saltado beef was perfectly cooked and not to sweet or salty in my opinion( others at the table thought a little too salty.) Perfect place for a date night! Intimate setting with awesome art displayed on the back wall. Servers were attentive and gave great recommendations. The pisco sour and pisco pineapple cocktails were refreshing. They didn't have a drink menu printed yet so they showed us a picture of a written list. They have a lot of delicious drink offerings; hopefully they will get those printed soon. The delicious food made up for any kinks. The shrimp appetizer, Ají de Gallina, and Peruvian spaghetti were all beyond amazing! Chocolate cake and ice cream were a tasty way to finish the meal. Definitely check this place out. Checked out Panka and it was delightful. Ordered the Arroz Chaufa de Mariscos which is the oriental Peruvian fried rice with squid, octopus and shrimp stir fried with vegetables. Restaurant is located in a strip mall type building and parking was full! Probably due to the other amazing restaurants surrounding. Note: be patient in finding parking! Upon entering there is no hostess booth. It seems to be a "wait for a host to greet and seat." It felt awkward walking in and having everyone staring while the wait. The restaurant was packed and full of patrons. Most were seated and there was a party of 6 standing in the doorway with drinks. Restaurant is small. It seats 49 people. The interior design is beautiful with romantic lighting & the simplicity of white, gold, and wood. A touch of color from the photography on one wall, mirrors to elongate the room, and faux roses on open shelving near the bar. There was hardly any wait for seating at the bar. Our hostess (the owner) was inviting and accommodated us at the bar when it looked like it was packed. Our order was taken and we received our food within 15 minutes. While waiting, Mariela (our hostess and the owner) offered a taste of their famous Pisco Sour. It was unique and delicious! Made from egg whites, pisco alcohol, lemon or lime juice, and cinnamon. I only had a sip since I cannot have egg. But it was rich and smooth. It was the most popular drink served that night. Highly recommend if you can drink it. The menu has a nice variety and upon skimming through the menu, it seems a lot of dishes are seafood dishes! (Yay! I love that! Not too many places like that here in DSM) There were some dishes with chicken, pork belly, and stir fried beef. There was NOT anything labeled as vegan or vegetarian. BUT the chefs are happy to accommodate any dietary requests. I was very appreciative of that. Overall Panka tasted delicious, has a unique menu, service was delightful, and a wonderful edition to the Ingersoll Ave restaurant strip.
