They eventually closed that original location and opened a gym called Coastal Fitness. They added a third partner, former CEO Chris Rondeau. In 2002, they purchased the rights to the name Planet Fitness from Rick Berks who had started his own Planet Fitness gym in 1993 in Sunrise, Florida. He got the name from his daughter's school project, Fitness Planet. Today Planet Fitness is chain of gyms with memberships as low as $10 a month. It has more than 7 million members and is one of the fastest-growing health club franchises in the U.S. The company has around 2,600 clubs making it one of the largest fitness club franchises by number of members and locations. The company majority is owned by private-equity firm TSG Consumer Partners. This Planet Fitness location is in the Planet Fitness Plaza on Powerline Road in Pompano. This isn't my usual gym so I enjoyed checking out another Planet Fitness to compare. Pompano seemed larger and more open than my gym. The equipment was set up in similar locations so I could find what I wanted. Some of the machines that get backed up in my local gym were more available here. They also had four of my beloved iFIT bikes compared to the two my gym has. The only thing I didn't like was it felt very hot in here. I would have appreciated lowering the AC. Like my gym, the Pompano location is also 24 hours which I love. Sometimes I like to come very late on the weekends when the gym is empty so I can feel I little more free in trying new things. This location also has the Black Card area for the $25 a month members with tanning beds, hydro beds, and massage chairs. I barely have enough time to work out never mind lie around so this has not been an appealing upgrade for me. The locker room has showers but that is another feature that I don't care to use. Overall I have been happy with Planet Fitness. I have been going on a regular basis for a few months now and can see the change in my body. The hours are great and I can pop in for as little or as long as I have. The machines are easy to use and they have videos on You Tube and QR codes on the machines so you know how to use them. There are so many ways to work out that I am never bored. I try to learn a new machine each time I come and I incorporate both cardio and weights into my workouts. Whatever part of your body that you want to work on, there are numerous ways to get there. Best of all this gym is not intimidating for beginners but is equally great for the hard core fitness fanatic. People stick to their own thing and you can feel comfortable doing yours in the "Judgement Free Zone." You can download the Planet fitness app that makes check in a breeze, tracks your progress and workouts, and where you can even find home workouts. The app also lets you know how crowded the gym is. I like that it works with the Apple Health app on my watch. So far this is the longest fitness routine I have stuck to and it has seeped into other areas of my life like a better diet and more regular visits to the doctor to keep up with my health goals and to think it all started with the first time I stepped through the door of a Planet Fitness.

I will be canceling my membership. The gym is filthy. Equipment seems to be always broken and the staff seem to be more worried about enforcing petty rules instead of focusing on what is important. Equipment takes weeks, sometimes months to fix.The bulbs for the tanning beds have been laying in the same boxes they were delivered in for 6 months without being changed. All while the bulbs that are in the tanning beds are old, have past their life expectancy and don't work. The gym locker rooms are filthy. Feces and urine throughout. Dirt and grime that cover all exterior surfaces. Feces, urine, mold, and dry boogers on the walls. In corners on the floors, hair in the sinks, trash throughout on the floors, etc. Need I say more?! Nothing seems to be cleaned on a regular basis. Planet Fitness, What are we doing here? Can you not do better for the customers who have paid good money for the expected value? This location is a pig stine. It's disgusting by any standard. This location needs a full makeover, deep cleansing or needs to be shut down entirely. Do better.

I had one of the worst customer service experiences I've ever had at a gym at this LA Fitness…read morelocation. After seeing an ad for their 3-day pass, I registered online and booked a confirmed appointment for 9 AM. I even received a confirmation text. Because my closest location is closed, I drove over 30 minutes to get here. When I arrived, the associate at the front told me, "There's no one from sales to activate the pass or show you the club, so we can't help you." No apology, no alternative, no solution. I explained that I had a confirmed appointment and had driven a long distance. He just shrugged, clearly not caring. When I said I might have to post my experience publicly, another employee -- an older gentleman working there -- loudly said, "You should!" in a rude, confrontational tone. When I asked for clarification, he responded, "Do whatever you like." I calmly asked for his name. He refused, became visibly aggressive, and when I took a photo simply to document who I was speaking to, he escalated into insults and threatening behavior. Nothing justifies a staff member at a gym behaving like this toward a guest who arrived with a confirmed appointment. Between the complete disregard for appointments, the lack of accountability, and the hostile attitude of the employees, I left without being helped and genuinely shocked at how unprofessional this location is run. If this is how potential new members are treated when they walk in the door, I can only imagine what actual members deal with.

Don't ask to work in with them bc they're entitled and bitchy and the trainers are even worse. Add to that, each trainer n client apparently NEEDS to carry an ENORMOUS gym bag, purse etc. The sign saying 'no gym bags on the floor' is only there for the irony, as many bags are placed RIGHT below it‍ I wish this place would revert back to when they cared about ALL their clients, not just the ones with a trainer. Eventually she directs me to a cubby desk where I finish my pass sign up. They take my id, snap a photo of me and have me do a signature. When I walked into the gym i wasn't even slightly impressed. It genuinely felt like I backtracked to 1987 and I'm walking in a yoga bar. The music was disturbingly annoying. I typically hear at least one good song in the rotation at gyms, it was quite the lengthy stay. Day 2- As soon as my feet hit the door the front desk was on and ready to tell me how I needed to take a photo and finish my account... To which I said "No, I did that already yesterday" She briefly paused before saying she remembered and was sorry. Day 3- I actually didn't bother to use my 3rd day. Turns out Ryan is also a trainer and a genuinely great guy. Ryan is very knowledgable and personable as well as very encouraging, and he is always smiling - except when it is his turn to lift lol. Margate Barbell is primarily a powerlifting gym, and Ryan is always around to make sure you are using correct technique to avoid injury. If you prefer circuit training Ryan's got plenty of tricks up his sleeves to keep your heart pumping. It's a smaller gym, but boasts a great atmosphere and great people. I've been training with Ryan since October 2016 and have noticed a big difference in my strength and general overall fitness. I highly recommend you stopping by and saying hi to Ryan.
