It's been too many years, but this was the best F&C ever!…read more As we were driving through at lunchtime from Glasgow to Stranraer, we saw a line of customers out the door, with people exiting, F&C wrapped in newspaper in hand. So, we realized, for such a small town, to have this many people standing in line, it must be good, so we had to stop. The fish was fresh, the batter - light, flavorful, not greasy - was fantastic, and local potatoes for the chips, it really was great. Since that time, I've moved to the PNW coast in the US, where we have another great "local" F&C shop.

I used to go there when I went to Turnberry for my annual golf pilgrimage to Scotland. It's about a 10 minute drive from the Turnberry hotel along the west coast of Scotland with a great view of Ailsa Craig. The F and C consists of a generous mild and moist filet with a crunchy breading and thick wedge cut fries wrapped in newspaper for take out, for about £5. The newspaper soaks up some grease and absorbs steam which keeps the food from getting soggy during the drive back to my room. I didn't take photos then but you can check their Facebook site for representative photos: https://www.facebook.com/marinegirvan/. This place is a dive in DDD Flavor Town. The F and C are excellent and I wish to repeat again or have them teleported! I haven't found a place in my area yet that compares.

I arrived at The Chippy Doon The Lane at the right time, around 5:45 p.m., on Tuesday 16 July 2019…read more The walk in to the entrance was through an alley between two buildings and had signage marking the restaurant was getting near, as I approached not another person did appear. The name of the restaurant was in sideways vertical lettering on the building face. Making my way in the entrance, a host greeted me and took me to an open table. The dinner rush at that time was small, and I looked over the menu. I went with fried haddock, hand-cut baked/fried chips, small white orbs of pickled onions, and tartar sauce. For my beverage I went with water with lemon in it. Prices were excellent (for example the pickled onions were less than one pound) and the servings were very large, I was happy I was hungry. The fish was perfectly flaky and fried to a golden perfection. The tartar sauce was thick and flavorful and the fries not too crispy nor soggy. They were especially good dipped in the tartar sauce. The restrooms were marked by gender - male and female. I felt more at home with those terms than I did the terms man and woman used back in the United States of America. Found it as a form of confidence builder as a female solo traveler that night. It was still light out when I left and I felt safe walking back out through the alley and to my hotel.

Hear ye, hear ye! This be the place to go for fish & chips in Arran! No place better. But then…read moreagain, it's also the only place, so thank goodness for it! Never have we visited Arran without a stop at this essential chippy. LOCATION: Fantastically located just across the road from the Brodick Ferry Terminal. Great positioning to enable a quick fix immediately upon arrival on the island, or as a last spot before leaving the island. FOOD: Full menu includes all the delicious items you would expect from a Scottish chippy. Over the years, the fish has gotten noticeably thinner and batter quantity has grown. This is not ideal, so hopefully the trend won't continue shifting. However, as mentioned earlier, it is the only chippy on the island. Separately, the battered haggis and black pudding is simply fantastic - not a bad word to say about it! Meat is sourced from the local butcher. SERVICE: Hours vary throughout the week & might change over time. Most recently, they have been closed on Tuesdays and usually shut by 8pm on days when they are open. Further, it's possible they may close a few minutes early if business is slow, so plan your visit with plenty of time before scheduled closing, else you might be unlucky. Unfortunately, after a long afternoon hiking Goatfell last summer, we arrived just a few minutes before closing with great anticipation, but found the keeper locking up and riding off on his bike (& not interested in how far we had traveled just for a taste of his fish & chips!). Disappointing day, for sure. The next day, we ran in to grab an order before our ferry ride, with another family arriving just after us. Our order took 30-minutes to prepare given the influx of business, so we ended up needing to push them to prioritize our order before nearly missing our ferry! Ultimately, this spot is a "must visit" during an Arran trip, and we have certainly had many exiting experiences here.
