It just seems to be in my perfect wheelhouse for pop culture stuff: Star Wars, Bob's Burgers, Rick & Morty, Game of Thrones, Stranger Things, and of course, Star Wars. and Harry Potter. T-shirts, socks, backpacks, pillows, pajamas, pants, keychains, watches, and other collectibles--there are a whole bunch of ways to get your fix. Either a new edition or exclusive to the University Place store: A whole section just for stuff from Netflix shows! There are several of BoxLunch-exclusives, and the prices of the other stuff are a little under Amazon prices. Every time I've been to a BoxLunch, there's been a sale. They very well may always have a sale that keeps prices low. And, the best part (at least to me) is they give a meal to Feeding America for every $10 spent (thus, the name BoxLunch). I get cool collectables and the hungry get fed ... I call that a win-win!

I, like many people during the pandemic, have really gone on a houseplant spree. I want to be a…read morebaby and mention that I was into them long before it was cool, but admittedly, have ramped up my hobby, and am currently 100+ plants in, on the way to turning my entire house into a jungle. For the last few months, I have heard mention of Planted Earth Floral from various members of a plant group in which I participate. The "Floral" really throws you off, as I would assume they are a florist, rather than a mostly-antiques-with-a-side-of-houseplants-shop. When I heard they had some long sought String of Turtles in stock, I made the drive down to Orem. They are located right off State Street, in a beautiful Victorian brick house. The facade is cluttered with décor: signage, furniture, garden statues, and other large decorations. The interior arrangement of goods matches that, but it is in the charming way where you never quite know what you will discover. When I walked in, a gentleman was at the front desk looking at his phone. He looked at me, more than once, but without a smile or any sort of greeting. Thus, it felt awkward looking at the goodies in that immediate area (and there was a doozy of a jewelry collection). I wandered through the rest of the store noting lots of great stuff: Victorian fur coats (and plenty of other vintage clothing), candy colored depression glass, beautiful pottery, prints, and all the staples one would hope to find, but I was on a mission, and only gave it a cursory glance. Plants are housed in a little greenhouse, and it is not a particularly large area, but they have some real treasures! Many common plants, but plenty that feel more special, like the aforementioned String of Turtles, Prince of Orange and Birkin Philodendrons, several varieties of Alocasias (even trendy Black Velvet!), Calatheas, etc. Many sizes, in hanging and standard pots, macramé hangers, etc. I was very pleased, and tempted by many, but only have so much space, so forced myself to stick with the plant for which I visited. Prices are comparable to other area nurseries, and I think the same could be said for their antiques. When I paid for my purchase, the same gentleman who had been at the front when I arrived assisted me, and he was as nice as could be! He shared care tips for my baby, and told me about the little tree frog they have living in their terrarium. So don't be put off if your encounter initially feels unfriendly. So far, my SOT is living the good life in a terrarium I crafted at the store owner's recommendation, and he seems happy as can be. Planted Earth is an excellent option for a lesser-known nursery that just might surprise you with your wish list plant.

I may be trippin'…read more Some three weeks ago I was wandering through the Layton Hills Mall and came across a self-proclaimed "indigenous gift shop" called Maky Arts. It was a retail store with a mishmash of products: Peruvian coats (for every, yes your reading this correctly, every NFL team); stuffed animals (mostly small dogs); toys including light-shooting rifles (you also heard this right); gigantic animal-themed dreamcatchers; Navajo-type rugs; doll accessories; Baja jackets; and an eclectic variety other things that would take me hours to describe. And then at the University Mall, I saw it all again. Except this place is RUNA Arts. I rubbed my eyes, I went to the food court and ate a Stromboli and Diet Pepsi to recharge my internal batteries. I went back to the site where I had my possible hallucination .... but it was STILL THERE. Did some Peruvian siblings named Maky and Runa have a falling out, split the family wares, and head in opposite directions on I-15? Did the name "Runa" not test well with audiences? Am I missing the nuances of a very slender difference between two totally different stores? Whatever the case, both are wonderful, eclectic, original stores that give their malls a one-of-a-kind gem. Okay, maybe two-of-a-kind ... but awesome nonetheless.

This garden store is probably ranked number 2 in my list of garden nursery's that I have visited in…read morethe state of Utah. They have a big selection of all kinds of healthy trees! they have expanded and changed things up sense the last time I have visited. I was a little disappointed this time because this nursery use to be my go to store for dahlias but they have only carried the basic types of dahlias that you can find at all the other nursery's. Last summer when I went they had dahlias that I have never seen in nursery's before. the employees kept to themselves when I visited today. They aren't consistent with greeting or helping. but overall this is a place I trust when it comes to buying healthy plants from. The prices are pretty fair so I recommend checking shades nursery if you haven't already!
