So I went to Pagu for breakfast and--owing to a combination of "Beginning of the (financial) month" & "Hi, I'm lactating"--I ended up eating my way through like half of their new breakfast menu (since 18 Sept, the guy said). Here's my report back.
Moral of the Story: Just because you *can* get breakfast to-go at Pagu doesn't mean you necessarily should. Everything I ate was tasty, and some of it was even reasonably priced, but even things that shouldn't be messy were messy AF in a to-go context. Also, while the nice man apologized for the wait a few times, it took forever to get my food--& there was hardly anyone else there.
First up: Latte. Well-executed--e.g. the barista knew how to froth properly and passed me a beverage with some weight in the cup, rather than a disappointing and overpriced cup of air--and it didn't require sugar to counterbalance any burnt or bitter tastes. Not mindblowing, but solidly good. Four stars.
Next: Cheddar-scallion croissant. This is filled croissant--fried scallions in the middle, & cheddar mixed in with the croissant dough (far as I could tell). It is also a Proper Croissant, aka *super-flaky* but without being dry. The oil from the scallions seeps through for a really oily bottom to this thing, but it works: The bottom is crisp, not soggy. Overall it was tasty, but I don't know if it's $4 worth of tasty. Would consider ordering again (& enjoying it over a plate, while seated) at a lower price point. Three stars.
Next: Bottomless Congee with 62-degree egg & umami oil. Note that, when you get this to go, it very clearly has a bottom; you will also wish it had a better-fitting top, because if the container tips even slightly in the bag, umami oil will seep out and soak through the bag and get all over your car. That said: This was good. The umami oil was spicy, which I wasn't expecting; I like spicy stuff (& enjoyed it), but should have spooned some congee out for Ms. Babychild before mixing everything together. While I don't generally like runny yolks and was distinctly suspicious of the translucent, jelly-like "62-degree egg," the net effect once it was all stirred in was like the congee equivalent of egg drop soup, and it worked. Would definitely eat again in a "for here" context where I could go back for seconds. Four stars.
Next: The breakfast sandwich--*OMG* the breakfast sandwich. I asked for the eggs scrambled a little harder, which they were able to do; the manchego was deliciously salty, the pesto was pesto-y, and the roll or whatever it was on was perfectly griddled--crispy outside & soft, chewy inside. I would pay $7 for this breakfast sandwich again. That said, I would *not* get it to go: The oil from the pesto leaked through the little paper wrapper and managed both to soak through the to-go bag AND drip all over my most comfortable pair of jeans & favorite nursing top before I noticed halfway through eating this in the car. Eat this sandwich, but _do not_ eat it in your car while driving to baby chiropractic (or driving to anywhere else, for that matter). Five stars, but proceed with caution.
Finally: A bag of granola, which I brought home & ate over my favorite yogurt. It's good, & it's got cocoa nibs in it, but for $11, it should have been a much bigger bag. Three stars.
Conclusion: Would go for breakfast again, but more in a "second breakfast" kind of way and on a day when I had time to sit and eat there. read more
