We first discovered the legendary tattoo artist named Samson a few years ago. He has tatted several people I know and back in 2019 he did fixed a tattoo for my husband and did an amazing job. This is a Hawaiian owned and operated shop. Samson has over 20+ years of experience. 2021 _ December: We are currently on a family vacation in Maui and my son really wants his first tattoo with Samson. He didn't know what he wanted but he wanted a Polynesian tattoo that had meaning and a band to wrap around his forearm. He just trusted Samson to the design and didn't know what the outcome would look like. Well after 3 hours we were all amazed at the details Samson put into the design. Taro leaves, ocean, fish, turtles representing him and his sister, all for protection, strength, love etc. Samson incorporated things we couldn't have thought of. It was truly an amazing piece. And it's designed in a way to be added on in case my son wants to add more when we come back to Maui. You will not be disappointed with Samson's work. He's trained a lot of students who now own and operate their own shops. But trust me, Samson is the master! read more

Got my first tattoo here and Kai was really helpful and patient in picking and modifying the design. The studio is very clean too. Definitely a good place to get your tattoo here. I got a forearm band. My wife and I came the next day again and she got a Tribal tattoo on her lower right leg, again done by Kai. And I got another one on my right bicep (a small one though). My father and I had a wonderful experience getting tattoos at Pacific Rootz with Kai Yamada. I found Pacific Rootz and Kai through their positive Yelp reviews. It was important for me to find a Hawaiian owned and operated tattoo shop with a native hawaiian tattoo artist. I was very impressed with Kai's Yelp reviews and followed my research up by looking at his portfolio on Instagram. I was very impressed with his work and style, and decided to book with him. I reached out to him via Instagram direct message asking for an appointment for the next Monday, to see if he was able to accommodate us. He replied quickly and professionally. I also asked if he was able to accommodate my father getting a tattoo directly after me. Kai agreed. We then discussed the basic inspiration/ideas behind my -and my dad's- tattoo. For me, a thin polynesian band around my left forearm. For my father, a tiki totem of the God of War, Ku. When we arrived for our appointment, the shop was clean and welcoming. Pacific Rootz is decorated with beautiful Hawaiian art and culture. Exactly the vibe we were looking for. Kai was welcoming, friendly, and professional. He already had prepared stenciles for us based on our isntagram conversation by the time when we arrived at the shop. After filling out the simple, necessary paperwork we began discussing tattoos. My father went first. After getting Kai's professional opinion on sizing and placement, Kai also suggested adding fire coming out of Ku's mouth. My dad loved this idea and is grateful for Kai's recommendation. My dad also commented on Kai's excellent attention to detail and knowledge about his art and culture. I have attached photos of the stencil, mid-way through the tattoo, and the final product. My dad is very pleased with Kai's work and is proud to wear it. Next was my turn. When we arrived, Kai provided me with a stencile for a thin band of Hawaiian and Tahitian symbols that have powerful meaning. He took the time and effort to listen kindly and patiently to me while I told him a bit about myself, so he could pick symbols that reflect my values. This was very meaningful to me. He then sat me down and taught me the Hawaiian/Tahitian names and spelling, English translation, and symbolism behind each symbol on my band. He was extremely knowledgeable, thoughtful and attentive to detail. He was very patient while we tried several placements to make sure I was confident and pleased. I also wanted fine, sharp lines and Kai did exactly as I asked. I will attach photos of my band. He checked in on me often and held polite, professional and friendly conversation throughout my visit. Overall, an amazing experience with Kai Yamada at Pacific Rootz. Would absolutely recommend to all. Thank you,Kai! Thank you, Pacific Rootz. Mahalo. P.S. Samson is an incredibly talented artist. My husband and I went to him to add on to our existing tattoos and get some reconstruction work on old tattoos. Samson took the time to listen to our concepts, made suggestions and got to work on our freehand tattoos. The results are stunning. I've never met an artist who can freehand with such fine detail and focus. I love his unique approach to each piece of work. Samson is also incredibly kind, professional and a downright good person. I did a lot of research on Maui tattoo shops before deciding on Pacific Rootz. Everyone at the shop is an incredible artist but I liked the work from Keahi. This Friday I got my second tattoo from him. He finished up my Polynesian style half sleeve. You'd be hard pressed to find a better artist or person on Maui. After my wife Bree and I decided that we wanted to get tattoos on Maui, I did an extensive amount of research on all of the shops on the island to ensure we chose the right place. I could not have made a better decision. Pacific Rootz Tattoo is #1 on Yelp for a reason. Our artist Francine was AWESOME! Everything started with her asking for reference materials in order to deliver the best possible tattoos. When we arrived, her sketches were almost spot-on. She then worked with both of us to make small adjustments to get the designs absolutely perfect. For the actual tattooing, she's got a very steady hand and a gentle touch. Samson is an exceptional artist - his approach is unique and his attention to detail is unparalleled. I waited a very long time and was very careful in selecting the person to do my first tattoo. There is no shortage of tattoo shops in Maui (or in my native Bay Area) but I wanted someone who specialized in the style I was looking for and could represent my ideas. I knew as soon as I saw his work that I wanted Samson to do my tattoo. From my description and pictures he free-handed a very basic outline on my calf, and from that a few hours later I had this fantastic, unique piece. Exceptional place to go. Daughter decided she wanted a tattoo before returning home - and no little tattoos mind you - first tattoo and one that ended up running down her back.... We stopped by and Nick Luna one of the artist chatted with her - came up with a plan for developing what she wanted and worked on her for over half a day to perfect the piece on her back. He did phenomenal work - the shop is clean - we met Samson the owner who is super nice and awesome. If you need a tattoo while in Maui this place is where you need to come. read more

I wanted an authentic Hawaiian tattoo. It's the oldest shop Hawaiian owned. Everyone there is welcoming. Samson is an amazing and talented artist. Samson Harp at Pacific Rootz is THE man to see on Maui for traditionally themed tattoos. There is no shortage of good tattoo shops and capable artists on the island but Samson stands out for his artistic vision and technical skill. We've made it a tradition to get tattoos when we travel for our yearly trip. This year in Maui we wanted to get tattoos again. We didn't have an appointment and walked in to Pacific Rootz as it was just down the street from our hotel. Matt, Shipwreck, was able to meet with us and get an idea of what we were looking for. We decided as we still had one more day we would go back the night before we were leaving to get them done. Shipwreck was ready for us and showed us his drawings. They were what we wanted and then as he did the tattoos he added his own flare and personalization to it. We both love our tattoos and are extremely happy with the outcome. read more

Hubby and I got our first tattoos from two of the most awesome artists on Maui. We're blown away by the intricacies of both. The place is chill and relaxed. The best part though is how we walked in as complete strangers and left as friends. After everything we experienced in Maui so far, we already feel tied to this island. Now, we feel like family... My husband and I were in Maui for our honeymoon and wanted to get a pretty small pineapple tattoo. Everywhere we went charged over $250-$300 (me and my husband both have an arm full of tattoos so we obviously knew this was overpriced). We decided to walk in Pacific Rootz and Mahi was able to take us in right away. We explained what we wanted and he only charged us each shop minimum which was $100. He pretty much free handed the pineapple and incorporated tribal designs on me and my husbands tattoos. Everyone that was there was extremely friendly as well! It was such a clean and cool shop. We chose this shop because as tourists, we like to support the locally owned businesses, but we would have left in a heartbeat if we felt the least bit uneasy. Walked in for a tattoo for myself and my husband, with basic ideas of what we wanted. The shop was open and warm, the sister of the owner was on the front desk and she was an absolute delight. Nick Luna was the artist available and he is incredible. We gave him our basic concepts, he asked a couple of questions and we went shopping in the surrounding area for an hour. We got a text and went back to two full designs. His designs were creative and on point with what we wanted and his suggestions for changes made them better than what we had envisioned. He was also very open to alterations we had, as well as giving us several opportunities to see the design in place to make changes before he started inking. I have several other tats from other artists and I am familiar with the feeling and I can say Nick has the lightest hand I've ever experienced. Despite the location on my inner arm near the antecubital area (tender skin there) this was the least uncomfortable I have ever been getting inked. The shop is clean and Nick was right there for you to see all the hygienic practices he uses as he sets up and the sanitizing he does. I couldn't ask for a cleaner, safer environment than the one he provided. Every tattoo shop has slightly different aftercare instructions, and theirs are very concise and clear, with an optional hand out that has do's and don'ts of tattoo care to take with you. Very well thought out. Total professionalism. I cannot recommend Pacific Rootz and Nick Luna highly enough, I wish there were more stars. read more

He followed a strong attention to detail from cleaning and sanitation process to the work he performed. He always made sure I was feeling good and my comfort (as much as possible) seemed to be a genuine concern. I would highly recommend. (I supplied my own artwork). read more

We spoke about the design and what I was looking for and Justin was great and came up with a drawing in less than 30 minutes. This was my first tattoo so there was lots of anxiety going into it. I let them know what spots on my body I was looking to get it at and they mentioned the forearm would be the last painful, which it really was. I think it really depends on where your pain tolerance is. If I ever visit Maui again, i'll be sure to add more work or get another tattoo from the Imua team!

So after looking around and seeing reviews we found Zen Tattoo. We walked in, very clean and well organized place and the wife states that she is wanting to get a tattoo. The gentleman behind the counter looks up and states, well that depends on what kind of tattoo you want. So the wife shows him a picture and describes what she is hoping for and he says, how soon do you want to do it? She says now, and he says let's do it. After about 10 mins of sketch work, Masao - gentleman whom was helping us provides a sketch to my wife and she says that's it. Before I know it, she is on the table and the ink is starting to go. With a deft touch, and calm and easily Zen personality, Masao carefully but diligently places a tattoo on the calf of my wife that she had been wanting. It was a Celtic symbol for new beginnings with an island flair that Masao suggested. After not more than 45 mins, the tattoo was completed and we were on our way. After five days, the protective covering was removed and the beautiful tattoo showed flawlessly. Without question I would easily go again to get work performed here and by Masao. This is the place to go to, and you will not be sorry you did.

She responded right away and came to my hotel at the pool the very next morning. I noticed at the end of the day the henna was a little light and Crystal responded by coming the next morning and touched it up.
