As you can clearly read, ownership allows it's employees free reign to malign customers while embarrassing themselves. Imagine what these people will do to your vehicle if they're having a bad day. 4 to 3 to 1 stars. Let me clarify Jim's childish response. When I went in to the PG location (not by phone) to get the tire quote, they're professional response should have been as follows: "A four-tire install without the programming sensors is $160, and an additional $60 if we have to program them. In addition, you can purchase the sensors here for $54, or you can get them at NAPA Auto Parts for $29." PMS answer to my question? "It's $160". This answer was lazy, inept and quite unprofessional. I'll leave it at that. If they care to continue this behavior, I'll get a restraining order. Pretty simple. I've been going to Monterey Motors (Greg) for a very long time. He is great and suoer nice. He just doesn't do tires and he is busirler than usual. Try them out. It saves time by not having to write a bad review, for which I notice, PMS gets quite a few. read more

Not your grandfathers mechanics! Seriously. The dependent service market is like Baskin Robins- 32 flavors. Clean facilities, dirty facilities, good service, bad service, high prices, low prices ( bad service ) etc. a pleasant surprise to walk into the shop (Stop-- you really don't see the shop) and be greeted by two professional service advisors-- Kyle and Keith, efficient, knowledgeable, Service people. They get you set up with what' you need, book the date and time and you're set, On appointment day, you bring the car in that's it.Done when it's supposed to be and an added benefit -+the bill outlines what was done and then they give your car a review. "It's in good shape"-- we noticed some things you might want to consider- a new air filter, a cabin filter. Period. They just put it on the bill, they don't tell you anything when you pick up car, my guess is they don't want to be pushy or sound like sales guys. Frankly, if they had told me this when I picked up car I'd have had the work done then. What 15 minutes? This vs. coming back in another trip for something so small. I had a check engine light come on & took it to Pacific Motor Service. They came back & said it wasn't the check engine light it was the maintenance light- But since they set the diagnostic for "check engine" I would have to pay around $400 bc I told them the wrong light!!!! I was flabbergasted that they thought they could do this. They came back within minutes to say I'd have to pay this amount. I said it was a crime to charge me for doing nothing but setting up the diagnostic & it's THEIR job to check which light & what the problem was. I was in shock, refused further service & never returned again. They then offered to only charge me $200 (cut in half) for the misunderstanding (bc I said it was a rip off & I wouldn't be returning as a customer). But they lost my trust; it should have never happened in the first place. I thought I had left a review back about 3 years ago when this happened, but it must have been on another website besides Yelp. I got a check engine light on my Honda, and decided to go here to have them check it out. The guy was nice enough, but his first course of action was to charge me $230 for a full diagnostics. I found that to be extremely expensive for an initial look, and took advantage of the free error code reading from a flyer I received in the mail. It showed there was a small leak in my evaporative emission system, which according to Google, could be a bad gas cap. I got a new one at AutoZone for $10 and reset the error code by unhooking the battery. No error code has returned. $230 is an expensive test to tell me I needed a $10 gas cap. Unless you have money to throw away, don't go here. **In response to the business owner: The complimentary service was not offered by you and I don't believe I would have known about it without the coupon. Your first action was a $230 service, not the free service, which I could also get at AutoZone for free. Only after I declined and brought up the coupon was the free check an option, which you begrudgingly followed through with. You also did not suggest the gas cap. I found that through my own research. You are not good stewards of people's money. I stand by my review. read more

My car broke down, and I was worried that I would be either stuck in Pacific Grove ( not a bad place to get stuck in) or have to drive back sometime next week to retrieve my car. Well, thanks to these guys, my car was ready in time for my return home, and the service was outstanding and thoughtful and extremely friendly and reassuring. I took my vehicle in for an estimate to repair the front steering rack. The cost quoted by them for the part was over $3100. I contacted the Lexus dealer in San Jose and I could buy the identical Lexus part for $1271. You have to ask why they would jack up the part cost by over 100%. DO NOT use this shop. Do yourself a favor and go ANYWHERE else. They are dishonest and untrustworthy! I brought my car to them to check a warning light that had come on. Kevin called me after a few hours to tell me that my car needed a software update and that it would be $720 for them to do the update plus the $220 to inspect/diagnose the problem. I said, ok well let me call the dealership to see if this is covered under any kind of warranty. I call the dealership and speak to their service department who tell me that they have never heard or a software update costing $700 they ask me to get a part number from pacific motor service. I call Kevin back to ask for this number, he gives it to me and tells me that he also just called Volvo to ask if this was covered under warranty. When I call Volvo back and give them the requested service number I am told that the software is about $40-$140 and the labor would only be $235!! They also told me that Kevin had just called to find out what they would charge him to bring the car CAR TO THE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE THE WORK DONE, then makes an appointment to bring my car to the dealership. It was never communicated to me that pacific motor service was unable to perform the work themselves and that they would need to take the car to the dealership for double price!!!! He even told me that it may take until the end of the week depending on what time of day the software was digitally delivered to the shop because if it was late in the day his technicians would not have enough time to upload it. They are unethical and dishonest STAY AWAY!! read more

My car needed struts repaired. These guys replaced it with what two other dealers observed was a faulty strut- placing my family at risk and everyone on the road. They also failed to place the oil canister- which is next to the strut and had a huge crack. As a physician who is sick and working during the COVID era- they called and emailed me that the re-repair was done. (never leaving a voicemail or text). ONLY ONCE. And now to get the car- are insisting I pay 700 dollars in cash which I dont have to be able to access the car from their lot. read more

DO NOT TAKE YOUR CAR HERE!!! This repair shop is untrustworthy. I took my vehicle to them because the check engine light came on. $1200 later they left me with an oil leak and the light still on. I brought the vehicle back to them to fix the oil leak and they said my engine was too dirty to determine where the leak was. They wanted to charge me over $200 just to clean the dust off my engine. Rory was kind enough to come out and look the situation over and advise not to service the vehicle because it was not needed. This was a 1200.00 job the dealership said it needed. He noticed many broken clips the dealership broke and did didn't replace he went and brought some back at no charge. You don't see that anymore. I brought my vehicle to Pacific Motor Service for an oil change and to potentially determine the source of a subtle engine noise, that only occurs when the engine is cold. I wanted to know whether the noise needed to be repaired on my 20-year-old vehicle. When I saw the $178.68 estimate for "Engine noise on Cold Start Up", I asked Kevin Donohoe, the owner, to call me after he heard the noise and before he took apart anything on the vehicle, as didn't want to pay $178.68, I merely wanted to determine if he heard the noise, to determine whether to proceed, per the estimate. Mr. Donahoe advised me the next day that the technician determined the noise was from the serpentine belt tensioner assembly. I asked him how much it would cost to repair and he indicated $482.19. I indicated that I wanted to think about it, owing to the age of the vehicle. I asked how much I owed him, and he indicated the agreed upon cost of the oil change, plus the $178.68 for "Engine noise on Cold Start Up." I indicated that I was very surprised that he was charging me $178.68. Mr. Donahoe indicated that he had to take apart certain items in the engine compartment to determine the origin of the noise. I indicated that I had asked him to call me before he took apart anything on the vehicle. His response was that $178.68 was the minimum inspection fee. I explained that I certainly did not realize that included merely listening for an engine noise and I didn't understand why he didn't call me before taking anything apart, as we had discussed. I paid the bill and when I got home, I read the technician's notes for the first time, "Noise concern. Could not hear any obvious noise concerns at this time. Only noise present at this time is a small ticking from belt tensioner assembly. Belt tensioner appears to be original twenty year old part recommend replacement due to age." When I read this, I became even more concerned, because the technician obviously had not heard the noise that I hear and I had been given a noise repair estimate of $482.19, that would not have addressed the noise I brought the vehicle in for. Owing to my concerns, I took my vehicle to a well-known local vehicle repair shop. While I observed, within five minutes, the mechanics, using a mechanic's stethoscope, determined the noise to be of no concern. They took nothing apart in the engine compartment. They also indicated that the belt tensioner assembly was not making noise. I was charged nothing. I'm very unhappy having paid the inspection fee and having been advised to have a repair that would not have addressed the noise. I would be even more upset if I had paid $482.19 to fix the noise, only to discover the noise remained. I send Mr. Donahoe a snail mail letter and completed an email review sent by Pacific Motor Service, in each instance asking him to refund me the $178.68 inspection fee. After three months I have not received a response. Subsequently, having read several other negative Yelp reviews of Pacific Motor Service, it appears clear that the company's business practices are unethical. read more

I really, really have a problem with this place. On the surface this place looks legit. There are signs and plaques everywhere. The employees and owner appear to be clean. Unfortunately it's a facade... I took my car in for a couple of minor repairs. The owner, Kevin, seemed friendly, descriptive and easy to understand. However once they looked under the hood the whole experience changed. I was quoted an absolutely outrageous price for a minor service. Suddenly I couldn't understand Kevin anymore. He began using extremely technical lingo and would give bizarre roundabout answers to very simply questions. I decided to get out of there, but not before I ended up paying $134 for a one hour "diagnostic fee" (took them 20 minutes), despite the fact that they didn't diagnose anything and I told them exactly what I wanted. I was suspicious of the owner's 100% clean, brand new coveralls covered with every patch he could order online. Always be careful of the guy wearing brand new work clothes.. Anyhow, if you're looking for a mechanic who is reasonably priced, follows directions and explains things to you then go someplace else. If you're looking for a mechanic who obfuscates, keeps your car all day and charges an arm and a leg than look no farther than Pacific Motor Service!! read more

Looks like I have to agree with many here regarding the attitude of this vendor. Came in for an oil change and was quoted one price - then when my wife came pack in to pick it up it was double the price because they found out I "required" synthetic" oil. When my wife debated this issue with them the advised her they had called my cell phone to advise of this situation. Obviously I did not pick up the message in a timely manner. Poor service tech looked surprised when upper mgmt. ,with a crappy attitude to boot. We were able to settle on the original price I was quoted. They requested we take our car some where else in the future. Best advice coming from this place as far as I'm concerned. Little regard to customer satisfaction. Pacific Motors, Pacific Grove, replaced a power steering pump and rack and pinion in 2018, and ten months/8000 miles later the work had to be completely redone. Here are the details. Work done in October 2018 at a cost of $1720 including a $40 discount even though the AAA discount is 10% of labor and ours was over $600. Gave us 6 months or 6,000 miles warranty, well below the usual NAPA warranty. Power steering noise reappeared in July 2019. Our licensed auto repair facility determined that pump and R&P needed to be replaced. They contacted NAPA to question the unusually limited warranty. NAPA agreed the limited warranty was unusual and agree to pay for parts and labor supplying their parts a few days While this experience may be unrepresentative, it was 100% of our experience with this AAA Auto Repair Facility read more

I thought I had written a review a while back, but its no longer here. Basically, I took my truck here to change the oil and do an overall inspection before I left for college. They told me my truck had a bunch of issues and I agreed to go ahead and fix a few. (The ones I could afford) After that, my truck just went downhill fast and I was unable to bring it with me to Oregon. My brother did me the favor of taking it back here to fix the on going problems (bad idea). The next day my bro was on the side of the road with my steaming truck telling me it had died... Pacific motors forgot the radiator cap.... It caused a small crack in the radiator and they did not own up to it. Instead, they over charged me for a new radiator that now leaks like hell. Since I'm a cheep-ass college student, I now carry the appropriate fluids and constantly check the damn radiator leaks and oil leaks cause I can't afford to repair then at the moment. I only chose this place cause my cousin works here... Definitely not going back. Ever. read more

I'm giving one extra star because they did do a good job on the oil change. We drove the beast to Ventura, Malibu, Northridge, Sierra Madre and back home and no troubles there! We took the beast in on Monday and my TRUSTY mechanic Ryan, said that it did need the timing belt if we planned on keeping it around and that while he was changing that he would also change a "few" other things. So for a new timing belt, crankshaft, thermostat, upper and lower radiator hoses, coolant, camshaft seals, labor and getting the car back by Tuesday, it was $680.00. New to the area, I was so worried about finding a shop with integrity that did good work. Look no further, I found Pacific Motor Service! I took my car in a week or so ago, with some problem that I didn't understand. I was so worried that they wouldn't be able to figure it out or that I would end up with a huge bill for no apparent improvement. But the weird clicking noise was solved and it didn't break the bank! It was definitely a little bit more expensive than other shops, but in my opinion it was money well spent. They did a thorough once-over to the whole car, and I felt safe leaving knowing that no other problems would pop up. Also, I would much rather pay a little extra for good, reliable service, than have someone who doesn't understand cars overcharge me for work I don't need. The guy at the desk (Darren? Kevin?) was so patient with me and kept me in the loop about what was going on. It also seems like they only have ASE Master Techs (which is like American Service Excellence or something) so I know the guys are qualified. I'll cut to the chase: I needed the California State Bureau of Auto Repair to come to Pacific Grove and get my car released from this awful place they call Pacific Motors. I had declined their offer to work on my car for $1200 after I decided they'd misdiagnosed the problem. I had notified the owner that I'd be towing my car to another shop and they said: "You have to pay us either Storage Fees for 10 days (@ $100/day which they'd NEVER told me about) OR pay us to repair your fuel pump (About the same $$$). I declined. The mechanic never talked about the water inside on the floor. Then - the owner called me back the next day and said: "You must not want your car so I'm going to keep the keys and put a lien on your car so it's mine ". Well I'd never heard of such a rotten thing and I've owned many cars and dealt with maintenance and repairs and mechanics. HOW RUDE. That's when I got so mad that I called the State Agency and the guy came down the next day and visIted the shop. He called me a half hour later and said "Come get your car by closing today - you owe nothing!" Ohh what a hero. Those owners/alleged mechanics are not to be trusted - I think they thought I was a chump and would pay them $1,000+ for NOTHING. I finally had it towed to another shop that specializes in my make car and the fuel pump issue NEVER came up. So that's proof of Pacific Motors' deceptive practices. How do they stay in business? After reading many Reviews here I can say these guys target women customers who mistakenly trust male mechanics. That's appalling especially in today's world. I cannot say enough wonderful things about this shop! Rory and Kevin (the owner) are some of the kindest, most honest people I have ever met. My Toyota Camry and my husband's Volvo have been serviced here for the past 1.5 years and we have been extremely impressed with their fair pricing, prompt service and comprehensive information given before repairs are done. When my car's maintenance light came on, I called to schedule an appt, Rory checked on the date of my last service and determined that I could go another few hundred miles until the next, based on the type of oil my car takes. I don't trust this business and unfortunately won't be able to recommend to others. At the time of my appointment and subsequent dropping off my car, I was given a list of the work to be completed and itemized costs which I thought was terrific. However when reviewing with the manager, Kevin, the cost of replacing the battery seemed high. I asked and he explained that the Volvo battery was expensive. So I shrugged my shoulders and didn't give another thought until I had to replace a battery on another car of ours vis a vis an emergency situation with AAA. The cost was significantly lower and when asked the rep he looked up the cost of a Volvo battery and gave me a quote that was over 50% less than I paid. I called other independent shops and the quote was similar to AAA. So, I reached out to Kevin and traded communications (email and phone) with him who was adamant about his cost of the battery. I asked to see his invoice or receipt and that's when he went silent. I am very disappointed and thankfully there are alternatives to using pacific motor service of pacific grove and Monterey. Do NOT go to this place. These people are thieves. I went there for a minor problem. They charged a ridiculous fee for using some GLUE to fix my tire. I ended up paying $174 for that, most of it ($134) was the diagnostic fee. One big problem was that they went ahead and fixed the problem without telling me. They were supposed to diagnose it, call me first to see if I wanted it fixed, and then proceed according to what I say. On top of this, they "discovered" a leak in my transmission that would supposedly cost about $700 MINUS the labor to fix. Yeah, right! I refused the service. When I told one of my co-workers, who has lived in PG for 30+ years, she said she had been to this same place and they made up problems for her car, too. She then referred me to another mechanic, who looked at my car and said THERE IS NO LEAK. I'm certainly not going back to this place. I specially warn women against going here. DO NOT go here. I made the big mistake of not yelping this place before taking in my car. Besides totally overcharging me, when I got my car back the plastic under my stereo was broken off. AND when I was driving on the freeway there was a weird sound coming from my car. A friend familiar with cars checked and saw that they didn't properly put back some sort of cover and I was dragging it for miles. These guys are really well groomed and seem nice, but they do a horrible half-assed job and take a ton of money for it. Update: They also way overfilled my transmission fluid. I took it in to another mechanic and they were blown away by how crappy of a job these guys had done. There was fluid all over my transmission and I'm lucky I found out before it did some real damage. They were decent enough to fix the problem when I went back in complaining, but not without attitude. We were on a road trip when the tire light on our car went on. Tire needed to be checked and possibly fixed. We stopped by the Goodyear tire up the street from Pacific motor service, they wouldn't even approach us because it was 4 pm and they closed at 5. From the moment we pulled up to the service area at Pacific Motor service, we felt taken care of. They were super fast in identifying the problem, and letting us know how they can fix it. Horrible place. Went here since a bolt was lodged inside a tread of my brand new tires and it went flat Christmas Day. I was towed here the day after and they said the bolt was too close to the sidewall and they couldn't patch it for liability reasons. I didn't really agree, but didn't want to make a fuss since I couldn't get towed anywhere else and this place was my only option for the time being. I'm pretty sure if a bolt is actually inside a tread, that it should be repairable. It was pretty much in the center of the tire. I couldn't get towed anywhere else since AAA doesn't tow twice for the same occurrence. Kevin (I think) gave me two options: He can order me a tire from his supplier and install it or he can install a spare for me. I told him the only spare I had was the crappy one under my car and I didn't want to drive over a hundred miles on it back home, so I made him look up the price of my tire. I just bought my tires for about 190 each (Michelin Cross Terrains) about a month earlier. He quoted me 300 dollars for the tire and installing it. So, I told him I'll just go buy the tire myself from Costco or America's Tire and can you install it? He then said, he couldn't do that for liability reasons, and I had to buy the tire from him. I probably should have just done it myself in hindsight. Keep in mind my previous second option was that he would be able to install a spare for me if I had it lying around. At this point, I knew the dude was shady. What's the difference that I got a new one from some other place compared to having a spare already hand for him to install it? Anyway, I still kept this all to myself since it was pretty much my only option for the time since I didn't want to inconvenience family with driving me 20 miles to buy a tire. So I figured spending 100 more was worth not going through that trouble. He said the tire would be there by 2PM. Flash forward to 2.30, and nothing has happened. I get a call saying they changed my oil, which I requested, and that was fine, but that my air filter was dirty and my tire wasn't there yet. I asked how much the air filter would be to replace. He said 50 dollars, which is ridiculous. I told him forget it. I just recently changed the filter yesterday, believing him that it was dirty, and the thing looked fine. Not too dirty at all and showed it to some friends who know more about cars and they agreed. I replaced it anyway since I paid 10 dollars for the thing and it took me about 5 minutes to do and I've never done it before. My tire ends up getting fixed at around 5PM, so the whole day is shot. Also, I didn't even get a reminder sticker for the oil change on my windshield. That's minor, but when the hell does this not happen after an oil change? This place is a joke. The guy seems nice and all on the surface, but has very bad business practices. I'm sure this place got low reviews for a reason. Avoid at all costs. And even if this was just an outlying experience, their prices are horrible. read more

Brought the car in to fix a radiator leak. Was told it could not be fixed and quoted approx $600.00 for a new radiator. Took the car to another shop for a second opinion. The second shop took a quick look and fixed the leak in about 5 minutes for a couple of dollars. As with all auto repair work shop around if something does not sound quite right. read more

I called at 3:30pm (its Friday) with a tire, that I purchased at this shop a month ago , going flat. I need it repaired. Kevin said he could not get me in, offered to make an appointment for Monday. It's raining, not a good time to drive the weekend with a leaky tire. I explained to him that I had to drive to San Jose for my autistic son to participate in the Special Olympics the next day, he cut me off mid-sentence, and asked for a good time on Monday! Several hundreds of dollars later, the next day we discovered the newly "repaired" brake lights were staying lit, even when the car was off and in park. Additionally, the air bag light on the dash stays lit now when it never did before and the air vents and air conditioning system no longer work. Took it back in today and was told it would be $70 just for them to look to see what was wrong. Don't they guarantee their work? When the charge was disputed during the "courtesy shuttle" back to the shop, Kevin became angry, raising his voice, and pulling over to the side of the road to argue and make insulting statements. I find this extremely unprofessional and at odds with the "female friendly" claim on their website. Ultimately, there was no extra charge to properly complete the repairs to the lights, but the air is still broken and the dash light still lit. Actually listing the stock parts might be faster than listing the mods. I am more involved than usual when it comes to auto repair and maintenance so its going to take a lot to sneak a scam past me. When my out-of-town specialty mechanic's health took a turn for the worse and he left the field, I was a fish out of water. EVERY Monterey shop - Even a couple of performance-oriented ones - declined to take on the car. The usual arguments ranged from the repairs not being by The Book (common term for industry manual that sets customary repair times), to a more honest "I wouldn't know what to do with it.". I thought I was going to have to try a shop in Salinas. Then I noticed a shop right next to my house. I drove in and spoke to Kevin about taking on some work routing some aux cooling lines. Rather than the usual freakout he responded with enthusiasm and let me know they'd be happy to work with me on both routine and specialty stuff. I was shocked to find these guys practically next door when I had been all over creation searching for a competent, can-do attitude. Since then I have worked with them several times.
