The good news is they replaced my fuel pump for free when my gas gauge wasn't showing how much gas I actually had (and left me stranded on a road trip). But communicating with John was always a challenge. I concur with the previous reviewer about phone etiqutte, demeanor and willingness to share information. For me a simple question usually got a defensive reply as if every question was an attack. I learned to walk on eggshells while trying to hold my ground and get the service I felt I deserved. (I paid them a LOT of money.) I had decided after this latest issue was resolved, I was going to move on to another shop. I probably wouldn't be writing this review if John hadn't literally hung up on me when I told him my window was opening an inch every time I unlocked the car and opened the door since picking up my car again. He cut me off and said I should find another shop because I have too many complaints (my questions?? wanting my car to not die on the side of the road when the fuel pump they replaced failed or wasn't installed properly?) And before I could say a word he hung up.

Expensive Battery Replacement: overpriced labor and material…read more I brought my 2020 Tiguan in for a battery replacement. I was required to do a $95 inspection first, which I agreed to so they could diagnose any underlying issues. They determined it was just the battery. However, the final bill came to over $530! While I appreciate that they tested the alternator to ensure the charging system was working properly, and I understand labor costs vary, this pricing seemed excessive ($300 for battery). The same Interstate battery retails for $179 at Costco. Even accounting for overhead and profit, a $120+ markup on the battery plus $200 in labor for what should be 30-45 minutes of work felt steep. The work was completed and the battery is working fine, but I wish I had shopped around more and took the warning signs of the defensiveness of the shop owner when trying to get a cost estimate prior to agreeing to pay for the inspection. Also, it was surprising that a veteran owned business did not offer any military discount.

You drive said dealership-maintained car to your hometown where your A.D.D. kicks in and you fill the afore mentioned DIESEL car up with *wait for it* UNLEADED gas. Somehow through the shame...the horror...the hiccup cries and desperate refrains of, "My boyfriend is soooo gonna break up with me" I got the car towed to Greg Bean Auto. A few facts about Greg Bean Auto 1. Greg Bean stayed in constant communication with myself and my boyfriend (3000 miles away) 2. Greg Bean can fly (this has not been confirmed) 3. Greg Bean et al. actually fixed the car in less than a day and fixed the car's power locks too; a job that had been estimated at $900 at the S.F. Mercedes dealership (no lie). He gave us an amazing deal. 4. Greg Bean is a huge proponent of Bio-diesel. Which I don't know much about, but I know all the kids are talking about it so it must be good. 5. Greg Bean doesn't advertise. We happened to find a glowing review on Yelp. G.B. is clearly in it for love of the game and that's pretty cool. In summation- if Greg Bean tells you to drink the Kool-Aide, you should.

My friend had checked out the car and said it was a O2 sensor, which I replaced but it was still on. So I went to Greg's for some professional help (on Halloween no less). He was very friendly, did a free scan, and reset my engine light because the read-out was indeed just that. Problem solved! I was able to return the other O2 sensor and save $60! What a Treat! Thanks! :D I wanted to give him 5 stars but experienced a disheartening part 2. Part 2: I needed an oil change (I forgot about it the first time I visited) and I figured I'd give my business to Greg since he's made a great impression on me the first time. Unfortunately it ended up taking way too long and costing quite a premium. I scheduled for a 10:30am appointment and arrived there on the dot. All the car lifts were taken when I arrived and it took until around 11:15 before getting to my car onto the lift. I was called at 11:45 to take a look at the car in which recommendations were given for timing and drive belt replacements. Greg said he will check on the factory recommended replacement times and pricing details, but it seems the computer was pre-occupied with another task. Then a complicated personal phone call came in and I waited again for him to get back to me. I am a very patient guy and always give people the benefit of the doubt, thinking their day is just unusually busy, but it was 12:15pm and I felt I couldn't wait anymore. I found his son Greg Jr. and had him look things up for me. Shortly after, Greg Sr. finished the call and was able to ring me up so I can get going. The price he was going to ring me up for was $102! 0.0!! Needless to say, I was stunned! Now, I have to admit I never asked for a price quote ahead of time, but I figured an oil change could only cost so much! Boy was I wrong! It's especially staggering since I just moved from San Jose and was used to $20-40 oil changes. He told me they charge 1/2 hour minimum labor (based on $100 per hour) and that he used Mobil oil and a Bosch filter - I found it retails total $27 locally, which translates to about $70 for labor. In the end he lowered it to $76 as a first time service. Greg Jr came and gave me the quote for the belts, I paid and left at 12:30pm, still a bit dazed. I felt kind of sick afterwards. Now that I think about it, I never did sign anything allowing for work on the car beforehand. In retrospect, I should have definitely asked for an estimate ahead of time (perhaps one should have been provided regardless?) and spoken up much sooner regardless of their workload. Lastly, I am not saying Greg is not good at what he does, I'm sure he knows his stuff inside and out and has a great attitude, but for maintenance duties there are other places that are willing to do the work faster and more professionally for a lot less.

Goodyear Pacific Grove Tire & Service…read more On 2/17/2023 just after noon I arrived at Goodyear in Pacific Grove to have a tire plugged and my rear brakes replaced. Let me say that I am a Disabled Marine Veteran recovering from a 3 week old knee replacement. So I'm still getting around with a Walker. As I wait patiently outside enjoying the beautiful weather and speaking with my daughter someone just starts speaking loudly to me which I thought was very rude because it was clear that I was on the phone. I end my call with my daughter so I can give the person my attention. It the owner of the shop. He says your car is unsafe to drive. I responded by saying this is why I'm here to have a tire plugged and my rear brakes replaced. He proceeds to say "I'm going to have to call the police to report that your car is unsafe to drive". I respond "I understand that's why I'm here". My car is on the lift, tires off, brake inspection being completed. The owner then repeated " I have to call the police ". At this point I say "please put my car back together and I'll go somewhere else". I enter the store and ask the service writer Donal F to please have the mechanic to put my car back together. He responds "what country are you from"? I respond "excuse me" and he repeated "what country are you from"? I respond "I speak the king's English I'm from the USA I'm a disabled Marine Veteran and I'm African American". The owner at this point was on the phone with the PG police. As an African American man when some involves the police your mind goes to am I going to die today? My car get put together. PG Police arrive two units!!! Because my car is unsafe to drive?? Of course I speak with the first officer explain the situation and we enter the store to get my paperwork and keys so I can leave. Donal F says "I took what he said wrong". I reply "no you said it correctly until you got a dose of the wrong one"! I post this not to garner any empathy but to share that a simple trip to Goodyear to have repairs done on my car turned into a very freighting experience because the owner of our local Goodyear here in PG came to the conclusion that as a Black man I couldn't afford the work that needed to be done and attempted to use the Police against me and paint me as "the angry Black man". I know now that I need to go to the surrounding cities to have my car serviced.

My issue arose around a timing belt appointment that I believed was scheduled for Wednesday of that week. When I arrived, I was told it was scheduled for the following Wednesday. Whether this was a misunderstanding or miscommunication, the result was that I had already arranged and paid for a rental car based on the date I believed was confirmed and was unable to recover that cost. When I explained the financial inconvenience this caused and asked if there was any way they could help offset the cost or offer some consideration, I was met with very little empathy or flexibility. I asked whether they could meet me halfway on the rental expense or offer any discount on the repair as the final cost of this event would be around $3000 ($1000 for both rentals), and was told they would check with the other owner, but I never received a follow-up. That customer service experience is what led me to write my original review. Since posting, the owner has called, emailed, and texted me repeatedly into the evening hours expressing how upset they were about the review and stating that video evidence shows the appointment date was said as "next Wednesday." Bay Auto does very good repair work, but this experience and the follow-up communication have led me to seek another repair shop moving forward.
