Hidden Gem! Went here not for auto repair needs. Please skip this review, if you are looking for a review for that. I'm reviewing the "hidden" Fishing Supply store on the second level. It's not really hidden, I snapped a picture of the teeny tiny sign outside the auto shop. Jim, i think he is the J in J & D Auto Repair was friendly and helpful getting the Beau set up with new reels, hooks and tackle to fish. He answered questions in regards to the differences to fish off the pier as well as the beach. Lots of varieties and stock for your local fishing needs, some things even looked like for boat fishing - i'm no expert so please don't quote me on that HA! Figured I give this local shop a review in times of COVID may not have much auto repair traffic that may stumble across this. COVID Review: Jim was wearing a mask, hand sanitizer was provided at the register as well as a screen/shield. Social distancing is enforced and Jim points you around the store so that you can browser without him hoovering too closely. Thank you Jim! We will be back. read more

J & D Auto Repair - Auto Repair Near Me - Seaside, California

got a smog check here recently, had some weird issues with my car that could have made it fail smog so they very kindly did a courtesy check instead of doing the smog and failing me and still making me pay. super friendly service, star certified which is exactly what I needed, a little costly but that's just how it is nowadays so I don't blame them for that. everything was done super quick and they were super transparent about what was needed. definitely will be coming back in the future for all my service needs. read more

I am here again for an oil change. Why pay more when you can get good service and quality work done on your car? And I trust them. Which is huge because I'm a teacher and I don't make a lot of money and they are always fair with pricing with me. And they promised to help me make my car last forever. No, in all seriousness this place is an excellent spot to have an oil change, smog check, or any other work done for you. If they can't do it, Jose will find somebody who can. I went to Jiffy lube or someplace like that for my oil changed before and they missed a leak. No good! And charge me twice as much. This is the spot. read more

J & D Auto Repair - My "precious" up getting looked at. - Auto Repair Near Me - Seaside, California

He fixed a dent in my door plus buffed my black truck. The truck looked new when he finished. I highly recommend him.

My car had what I thought was an oil leak, but turned out to be a transmission fluid leak and they took great care of it and got my car all fixed up efficiently. They are great and I highly appreciated it. They showed me the issue and got it fixed quickly. The photos show the transmission fluid and them showing me where the leak was coming from. read more

Simply stated. These guys are as honest as you get. Twice they have saved me hundreds of dollars by looking up to see if my car was under a recall. Would have been easy for them to not tell me. In you are in the Monterey area... go to these guys.!! read more

Painless smog-check. Got the letter from the DMV that it's time to renew my registration and a smog check's gotta happen before I'm in the clear. J & D Auto is the first banner that I see and I pull in, cold turkey, at about 4:10 in the afternoon. Lindsey and Jim greet me with a smile and a 'No Problem, give me 20 minutes' when I ask for a smog check on the spot. Seamless transaction and the total tab was $50. In, out, and thanks to their e-delivery of my smog results my registration is taken care of. read more

Had to get my car smog checked and this establishment was everything I want in an auto repair/service place. The staff was fast, friendly and very professional. I barely had time to sit down and relax when they were already finished. The price, service and friendliness was second to none. I would use them again if needed. read more

Excellent service, very honest I've been taking my car there for years. Always good appt timing, reliable and considerate. Fast and efficient. read more

I have been taking my cars here for years and always had a pretty good experience. Then i had to get my car smogged. When i called they said they were getting a new machine and it could be a while, It is a second car so i wasn't in a hurry. So I called back couple weeks later and then again to see if i could get in and every time i got to hear about how expensive this new machine is and how its not fair they had to buy it. After waiting and waiting i finally got in! Only to find out they now nearly a hundred dollars do it I'm sorry but It costs money to do do business and that's the last of mine they will get. read more

Called in for a smog check, was in and out in less than 30 minutes! Great people, definitely coming back for other car needs!

I needed my car smogged at a STAR certified place and accidentally picked a place without the certification. I was referred here and spoke with Jose on the phone, who told me I didn't need an appointment and to come on over. I was in and out in ~20 minutes, and my car passed the smog. Great! I'd come back. Jose was super friendly. read more

I took my vw passat for a oil change the next day my car was saying it needs oil.so i took it back to them and the guy checked it said it needs a quart of oil. I asked him how i just got my oil changed with you he said may be its burning oil.lucky my car had a recall on the computer so i took it to volkswagon for the recall and they noticed oil in the engine that the plug was not put back.so i went to j&ds they refused to take responsibility the owner just kept arguing with me telling me it was not there fault when it was it cost me 161.oo dollars to fix there mistake i do not recommend this place they gave me $80.50 back and told me and my son to never return. Very rude and unprofessional. read more

J&D is a quality auto repair shop, with friendly, fast, and great service. I have visited J&D a few times for various services, on a recommendation from my regular VW Repair man, another great business and ownership over at "Just Andy's"; and I have never been disappointed. From oil changes to SMOG checks, I have always felt comfortable, welcomed, and in good hands with James. The woman who works the front reception area is great, as well, extremely helpful, kind, and warm. I called on a Wednesday, and was promptly confirmed an appointment for Saturday morning. The process was quick, simple, and I thoroughly enjoyed talking with everyone who works here. I highly recommend this business to anyone needing car repair in the Monterey area. Oh, and they have a great variety of Fish & tackle supply for any fishermen (or fisher women) in the area!! Check it out! read more

Can't say enough about this place! I've been going here for my oil changes, brakes, and other mechanical issues for years and they always treat me right! Jose, in the office, always makes time for my vehicle and it's always an in and out job! Their prices are reasonable and they are honest and trustworthy! Truly awesome place! read more

Horrible place I will never send anyone there ever. The man that I believe is the owner treated my wife like crap when she went there to have smog done. Horribly disrespectful and I will be giving him a piece of my mind when I come into town. Please do not support this company. read more

You'd have to be nuts to go here. Extremely rude employees. The mechanic made disparaging and condascending remarks about my car and announced that it should be junked, although it didn't stop them from taking my money anyway and then failing the smog inspection. I found a disconnected hose, replaced that, and the car easily passed at a DIFFERENT smog station. If you like being abused and given the fisheye, this is the place for you. It's really amazing that this place is still in business. read more

I cannot recommend this place under any circumstances. Here's why: 1. I needed a smog check on my 1995 car and called J & D on Friday. Lindsay there gave me appointment for 11 a.m. the following Monday. Late Friday afternoon she called and apologized that the 11 a.m. appointment time was no longer available. I asked for the same time Tuesday, which she gave me. 2. Tuesday morning, after running the car for a while on the freeway, I took it to my regular repair shop and had the emissions "pre-tested." The car passed with flying colors. A little after 10:30 I took the car back on the freeway to make sure the catalytic converter was plenty hot before showing up at J&D exactly at 11 a.m. 3. To pass the DMV hydrocarbons portions of the smog test, it is essential that the car, and its catalytic converter, be tested while the engine is hot. 4. At 11, I completed the paperwork; I left the premises to take a walk. Asked how long the test would take, Lindsay said about 40 minutes. I left the garage at 11:15 - the car was still sitting outside. 5. At 11:40 I happened to walk past the shop and noticed that my car hadn't been moved. The owner of J&D, Jim Franco (who would also do the smog inspection) motioned me over and told me he couldn't figure out how to start the car due to the key being hard to turn. I told him the ignition lock was new, took the key from him and started the car instantly. 6. At 11:50 Jim took the car into the garage and began the testing, or at least I thought he would. Instead, an acquaintance visited him in the shop and they had a social conversation while standing next to my car until 12:05. This happened in spite of the fact that I was standing outside in full view of Jim. 7. Around 12:25, Jim motioned for me to come out to the car. He pointed out how much work it was to "smog" an older car like mine. He complained that he should not have come to work today. He made me feel like I created a problem by bringing him business. 8. The car passed all the tests-except for the hydrocarbons one - the important one. Jim said he'd try to rerun the test, which took another 10 minutes, the results were the same - a count of 155 hydrocarbons vs. the allowable amount of 100. 9. Jim said he would charge me less for a "retest," and suggested that he could probably fix it for me, maybe cheaper than somewhere else. 10. At no time did he suggest that because the car had cooled down in the hour he didn't test the car, would the test be bad. 11. At 1:00 p.m. I left. 12. Two days later I went to another shop, which stressed that with older cars it is important to run the test IMMEDIATELY after coming in - or the test results will be bad like mine were. 13. I heated up the engine again on the freeway, they did the test IMMEDIATELY, and the hydrocarbon count was only 6 instead of 155. I passed. Bottom line: If you think this is good service, go to J&D. I never will again. read more

Wouldn't go anywhere else for service! I've been a customer of J and D do many years and have never had a negative experience! They go out of their way to make maintenance and repairs thorough and painless. Three have never tried to "add on" services that are no necessary( as I have experienced at a local dealership). Convenient , professional and friendly!! Highly recommend!!! read more

Bought a car here a while ago and thought it was a reasonable deal so I didn't haggle on the price and didn't even bother with a carfax(my bad!). After I left, I noticed that the center console was missing and a piece of jagged metal was sticking out. Called the owner who said he would call around to have it fixed, but later said he'd give me back a little money and I could fix it myself(no biggie). Started driving the car on my commute and it shudders and shakes at all times. I think it has probably been in an accident. After 2 years I've had enough and will be trading it in, but when I started researching the value SURPRISE, the car is 3 years older than he said it was! He is a "dealer" so he did all the paperwork when I bought the car and I never looked at the year until now. It never occurred to me that someone would lie about the year! I know I should have been more diligent, but what a disgusting way to do business. STAY AWAY AT ALL COSTS! read more

Great service from James (dad). Got us in at the last minute for a smog ($44) and had it done sooner than promised. Plus he has a full service fishing supply store on the premises. Highly recommend them for any auto services and any of your fishing needs. Only thing to know when driving in is that its a one way in and out so parking can be a bit tricky. No biggie though! These also have great used cars for sale! read more

Took my car to these folks because I had a fog light go out. They told me the entire apparatus needed to be replaced, at a cost of $65.00! That didn't sound right so I took it to another repair place and they fixed it by replacing a bulb for $3.50. These folks are either stupid or dishonest. Whichever it may be, avoid them at all costs. read more

This is a horrible place and I think they should have their state CAP rating taken from them. They are one of the only CAP state places in the area and they have caused me to be in a serious position of having to go somewhere else at the last minute because they refused to work on my car after pushing the appointment back and mechanic not being there on our scheduled time was at home instead and not telling me that my dealership diagnostic would not work with the state program that they knew I was using wouldn't be sufficient when I told them I had to go to my dealership because the mechanic wasn't there when we had planed to take care of my car this day. I was running out of time and then they wanted to charge me again and wouldn't recognize my diagnostic from my dealership but also did not tell me when I was on the phone with them and informed them I was taking it there. after all the times my appointment got pushed back then mechanic wasn't there, then he was going on vacation and made it sound like he would be gone all week which prevented me from bringing it in earlier that week then they refused to work on my car after jerking me around. I have had bad dealings with this place before and shrugged it off but this was one of the only stations around here and I needed it to be close because I was going to take the bus to work after dropping it off. They have caused me a serious situation now where my time is up and my car may get towed or impounded at any time. They are rude if you read the other opinions on this I have to agree and he treats women like crap especially if they are alone. Bring a big dude that is knowledgeable about cars to deal with him. They should have their rating yanked with the state. I am making a formal complaint with the state. Disgusting!!! read more

Staff was nice service is horrible. the owner needs to keep his ass out of the mechanic shop and in the fishing store. I recently put a brand new motor in my vehicle, took it in to get it smogged it was running perfect passed all the tests until the owner came down and took over all of the sudden the check engine light is on and the car runs like crap, and he says "no pass but if you leave it with us for a couple days we will go through and find out what is wrong with it," then quoted me upwards of 500 dollars to look at it and that was just to start. I was barely able to drive my vehicle out of there, which is funny considering when i drove it in it was just fine. I wouldnt recomend this place to my worst enemy and especially not to anyone that i like. The owner is an @#$hole very rude and personally i dont believe he knows a dam thing about how cars work. If you like to get ripped off then take your vehicle there because they willl tear you anew one, the young lady working the counter was extremly nice and cute, shes the only reason to even go there. read more
