He would often check in to make sure that we got the end product we desired and was receptive to feedback for the design. With their workmanship guarantee, we have nothing to worry about. We looked through multiple designers, contractors, etc. and decided to go with David and Inside Out. Our overall goal was to maximize the backyard space for play, add bike storage, benches for seating, tropical plants, and a grill space. We went through a couple design iterations with David. He had great recommendations on plants, great thoughts on design and was flexible on the fly. We originally were trying to save some existing plants moving them to another location but I am glad we cleared everything out and started with a clean slate. We were also thinking about a raised garden but decided to go with storage benches, another decision I am glad we made. His team took out all the pea gravel, jackhammered and removed the concrete slab, removed sand/dirt accordingly, removed all existing plants/trees. His team was very professional, they arrived/left at the same time everyday. We added two benches with storage which was a great hit during many play dates having multiple places for adults and kids to seat/play. We also store various toys, gym equipment (weights for me), bbq items in plastic containers so they do not get wet with the morning dew or rain. The bike storage unit is practically waterproof. Everything stays cool and dry even when it pours in the winter. The turf is still flat, no crazy gopher mounds like you get elsewhere in the Outer Sunset (they installed gopher wire below the turf). Our plants: *King Palms *Queen Palms *Fern trees *Podocarpus Elongatus (ice tree) *Giant Birds of Paradise *Other plants Inside Out also does maintenance and guarantees the plants for the 1st year. We have them come out monthly and have had them replace some of the smaller plants as some did not last. All of the large plants and trees are doing great along with the Giant Birds of Paradise. We also had Inside Out build us a trash bin area out front after they finished the backyard. Everything looks great! Many of our neighbors and friends have commented on how great our backyard looks. We even got a nice note from a neighbor we did not know saying how he enjoys waking up with the view of palm trees out of his bedroom window. He's great with communication, and his estimate was right on point. I had some drainage work done at my house which trashed my entire irrigation system, so I needed to have it replaced, both in the front and back yard. The McKay crew did a bang up job of it. They came in on time and on budget. They had the whole system laid out and running within about two days. Then Sherman spent some time with me to make sure I knew how to operate the controllers. In fact, they do more than irrigation, and I will likely have them come back and put in some new plants and do some other work in my backyard. I was surprised my call was answered & thrilled that Gerado said he would be in my area in an hour or so & could take a look. When he arrived he gave me a quote & said he could repair it now. A week later late in the evening I noticed another section had begun showing some seeping at the popup heads & figured to check it in the morning. Next morning to my surprise I received a text from the water co that my smart meter had alerted them to a continuous flow. I went right to work & saw I had a valve problem. I thought I could handle the repair on my own following some you tube advice, I replaced the top of the valve body. Long story short I was unsuccessful & couldn't stop the ebb. I called Gerado who determined possibly because my original valve was over 16 years old there could be some minor variance to the molding process or I purchased a defective valve. We agreed to replace the entire valve assembly. Gerado who returned again on Sunday with a new valve installed the valve in short order. Immediately all was back to good working order. He came back with a rough sketch of what we were looking for, and an estimate within our budget that included hardscaping *and* landscaping, along with irrigation and a contingency budget. (Lots of contractors we spoke to did landscaping or hardscaping, but not both; and none came with design ideas.) As demolition was ending, Monica came back with more specific designs, including for our deck and specific pollinator-friendly and low-water plants. The design discussion was collaborative and she took into account that the yard would be used by dogs and kids (thus plants needed to withstand less-than-mindful foot traffic).
