It's a basic system with just one controller and 5 valves. Despite this I agreed because of the reviews here and because it would be for the following day at 1 pm. The day of our appointment a couple hours prior, Alex texted me asking if he could come earlier than scheduled. I told him that I wasn't able to make it then, and he responded that it was fine and he would see me at 1. I drove 30 minutes to meet Alex at our agreed upon time, and waited 15 minutes waiting for him to show up. He didn't, so I texted him again to see what his eta was. He then informed he wasn't coming, and had an emergency to take care of. Given the prior conversation with him, I'm not entirely convinced of this "emergency ", especially because he still offered to come in the morning the following day. Had he called me when he knew he wouldn't be able to make it, I might be more forgiving, but he wasted my time.

I'm not sure if I bought a piece of irrigation for my neighbor to fix my system or what. But I asked the man at the desk if he had a list of irrigation specialists. I knew my neighbor was retiring and was in a small panic. The man at the desk pulled out a sheet of paper with names and phone numbers and I got some names. So the next time I needed some help was in the winter during the pandemic and I don't think we ever connected. Now it's way past the pandemic lockdown and my irrigation system was not working and I called my retired neighbor who once again said "call Irrigation equipment company". I did and I bet it was the same guy at the desk and things started to click in my memory and I called the first name given and get this, the first name was one of the two I called years ago and he still had my number in his contact list!!! This time Bruce Sutorius actually came out and fixed and checked my system, clearly at ease and competent. The whole experience was wonderful and sweet starting years ago and there is alot of comfort in knowing this little low key place is still there, I bet it's the same guy at the desk with his list and every thing fell into place. How good is that!?!

What a waste of time.

These people really need to get better at communication and customer service.

In 2023 I vowed to myself that I would have a functioning irrigation system by the end of the rainy season/start of summer. I reached out and started getting quotes - one of them was from Green Sunsets (Daniel). He was prompt when he came by for the quote and it was clear that he had extensive knowledge of planning and setting up irrigation systems. He ended up quoting me for a). a new system vs. b). going in and troubleshooting the existing system which I appreciated. His quote was reasonable and he was patient and thorough with me when I had a few followup questions - I ended up moving forward with Daniel to do the work. He was able to get me on his calendar pretty quickly and the whole job ended up taking about 3-4 days. Daniel had a team of workers to help him - his team was hard working and I appreciate that Daniel was also present for all of the days and directly checked the new system as it was installed to verify that everyting was set up correctly. In addition to the irrigation work, my yard was also very overgrown - Daniel and his team also did great work for me at the same time in removing a broken trellis, removing pesky vines, and pulling out a bunch of overgrown plants and bushes. Fast forward one year to spring 2024. After the rainy season ended (and irrigation system needed to be used) I noticed that there were a few breaks/leaks in the tubing/lines. I reached out to Daniel to ask about and he came by to my home. My initial thought was that either thirsty squirrels or our gardener had broken a few of the lines. Daniel assessed and came to the same conclusion, but since it was a fairly small task offered to help fix at no charge (even though the leaks were caused by our gardener). Daniel's work left me as a very happy customer and I am happy to recommend Green Sunsets.

Our previous irrigation system had leaks etc…read more During the site visit, to which Mike showed up drunk (which is fine, whatever), he mentioned that his workers would add irrigation to the pots, remove existing pipes, and bury the low-voltage electric wire which was going to be running along the pipes anyway. Mike canceled on the originally scheduled date once. Finally, Mike sent two guys to install the irrigation. They were fine and were happy to bury the electric wire when requested, but then later Mike came and rudely told me that that wasn't part of the spec, and that "these guys are stupid, if you ask them to wash your dishes they would do that too". I didn't appreciate the racist comment but let it go. But that was not all... there isn't much space between our home and the next one (think 12 inches or so), and he asked how we would get the siding repaired should we ever need to. I said I didn't know.. he said "maybe you can hire an Ethiopian to get in there, they're all thin because of the famine there". Truly WTF Anyway... judging the work itself - the installation seemed fine when it was done, but we later noticed and had to patch four leaks. I'm not sure if there are more. The piping they used, I was later told, was lower quality too. I'm not sure how long it'll last. I was unable to get competing quotes because we were short on time, but later I realized that his quote was a bit higher than others for the same work. He insisted I pay in cash, and so I did. I then spent literal WEEKS following up with him for an invoice (which I need for bookkeeping), and he kept blowing me off. He said things like "I had a family emergency", "I have 50 jobs this week", "I'm busy" and then simply stopped responding. He also said that it's just 2 minutes of work and that he would get to it... but he never did.

My immediate need was repair of a broken line, but I also wanted to cap off an area where we had to remove a wall covering shrub for fire mitigation purposes and to add a couple of drip lines. Jeremy was punctual, polite and didn't break a sweat addressing all my issues. He had everything completed in record time. The entire process was handled professionally from the start here on Yelp, to the initial inspection to the estimating to the scheduling of the job and performing the work to completion. I was so impressed I recommended the company to my father in law, who is also using them now. I know their capabilities go way beyond my simple job. They were always booked - which is a good sign - but that meant it was challenging to get them on the schedule. But when available, they did great work at reasonable rates. Eventually, the company was sold and the new owner changed the business model a bit. The initial bids were the same - basically truck roll fee + labor with materials to be billed after job completion. The big difference was they no longer provided itemized material costing and the materials markup was much higher than other irrigation vendors we've used. In addition, this change was not noticed before the job was completed and they refused to itemize despite multiple requests. Again, they've always done great work for us and if not concerned with paying a significant markup for materials, then possibly a good fit for you.

I'm an Architect and my brother is a General Contractor who's been working in the east bay for the past 12 years. We live in a duplex and recently landscaped our property. We've built a good network of trades such as concrete, electrical, framing, etc., that we brought in as subcontractors, but didn't have an irrigation company. We bid the work competitively and Mckay Landscape submitted a responsive and competitive proposal. The scope included wiring, programming, and installing a 4-zone irrigation system across several flower beds, vegetable garden, bamboo planters, and a sprinkler system for a lawn. I live in North Oakland, just bought our house last spring and the front yard was pretty much only dirt and rocks. I tried to put in a new lawn + irrigation system on the cheap using someone from Thumbtack and after months of back and forth of issues and delays, I decided to call it quits and was thankfully referred to McKay irrigation. Mckay Landscape worked wonders with new irrigation in our yard. They installed a new lawn sprinkler system, drip irrigation network and smart timer with 11 zones. In addition we had Mckay Landscape coordinate with a Mckay recommended sub-contractor to install new DG pathways, flagstone patio and sod lawn. We worked with Sherman McKay of McKay Landscape to replace all of the valves (6 in total) for our residential irrigation system. Sherman came out, spent time with us making sure he knew what we wanted and making sure we knew how best to proceed. Rather than doing all the things we had originally envisioned, Sherman counseled us to do the work in stages (replace valves, then landscape design, then irrigation design and repair/replacement). This is the company that I've been trying to find for years. Sherman McKay actually listened to what I wanted and came through with a creative, thoughtful design that is just right. It is a pleasure to work with Sherman and his assistant, Julio. This company goes the extra mile. He promptly returned my call, was able to come over the same day, and quickly diagnosed and fixed my irrigation system which wasn't working due to an electrical problem. In addition, he advised me how to modify my system to save water, so I've hired him to come back next week, take out my sprinklers, and lay down drip irrigation instead. I'll be calling Trevor annually to do an annual physical and hopefully no more trampled emitters from tree trimmer or my dog.

My strategy was to avoid the problem, but he tested it and, sure enough, no sprinkling :( I contacted several local companies and these were the quotes I obtained: - Company 1: $2900 to replace all 10 valves. This might not fix everything and then we might need to replace the electrical components ($1500 additional) - Company 2: $1500 for a new controller and installation, but only recommend 1 type (with a cumbersome looking app) - Latham: $200 (2-hour minimum site visit) to install new controller and can use any extra time to address other issues. We were able to research controllers and bought one we liked (~$200) that had great reviews and an amazing app. Trevor was reliable, showing up on time for the quote and later for the work. After I initially left a voicemail, he responded within 2 business days, then we corresponded by text. Clear communication by text (though sometimes there is a 1-2 day delay). He is usually booked 2 weeks in advance, but worth the wait! On the day of the installation, Trevor was even able to stay an extra hour and fixed a zone that never worked for us AND he replaced some sprinkler heads that were old and not working well. He even let my husband tag along to learn. So total he charged us $325 ($100 for the extra hour, $25 for sprinkler heads). My husband was so happy that he rounded it up to $400! Trevor really saved our butt on this stressor. I thought earlier with the first astronomical quote that we would just have to live with a dead yard. He is our sprinkler guy now and we highly recommend him!

It entailed: removing and/or pruning some of the existing plants, planting new ones, removing the existing irrigation drip lines + installing new ones, a new water valve, and installation of new edge stoning. From the time I contacted John, he was prompt in responding, setting up a time to meet with me, and providing a recommendation. John was very professional, communicative, and his pricing was very fair and transparent. Throughout the project, John and his crew went above and beyond, providing additional value. What particularly impressed me with John was his creativity and eye for design, which was very helpful when setting up this project. He had ideas on the layout & plants to select from. I have a large and unique garden so John and I had a very good chat about the work I've done on it. I think he is genuinely very passionate about what he does. The price per foot (same materials, design) were: $120, $145, $179, $222. I've found that when it comes to fencing and landscaping, there is a huge range of vendor prices (and personalities!) So it's best to get multiple quotes. John was the $179 quote, but he followed up with me and offer to renegotiate the price after learning he was on the higher end. I feel that he would have done a good job, but my neighbor and I were also happy with the other quotes we received.

I was already in contract with another landscape architecture firm at the time that I met Manny, and I was interested in having him do subcomponents of the work. Manny was able to work with the original contractors' plans, upload them to CAD, and fine-tune the installation. His ability to make on-the-spot design changes was helpful. His crew was professional, hard -working, and always showed up on time. Manny did a solid job of providing estimates and sticking to them. Manny is smart and has excellent people skills both with the client (me!) and in the way he interacts with his crew. I feel that Manny provides an excellent value for the services he provides. He brings the professionalism of a large firm without the overhead. I have asked him to return to conduct additional work, and I have recommended him to my friends. One other note: the primary landscaper on my project was territorial and at times spoke rudely and unprofessionally to Manny and his crew. I thought Manny handled this tension with kindness and was able to successfully diffuse the hostility. I appreciated his ability to work under sometimes-stressful conditions.
