Inside out had an incredible vision and execution in turning a useless sloping tiny hillside of a backyard into a spectacularly constructed and planted usable yard space with attractive fence, benches, fire pit and room for people to congregate. It is gorgeous looking out at our plants every day as they helped us pick items that would flower throughout the course of the year. We moved to the Outer Sunset to have a little more space for our son to run around. The backyard of our place was full a pea gravel and the typical concrete slab that you see in typical Outer Sunset backyards. We looked through multiple designers, contractors, etc. and decided to go with David and Inside Out. Our overall goal was to maximize the backyard space for play, add bike storage, benches for seating, tropical plants, and a grill space. We went through a couple design iterations with David. He had great recommendations on plants, great thoughts on design and was flexible on the fly. We originally were trying to save some existing plants moving them to another location but I am glad we cleared everything out and started with a clean slate. We were also thinking about a raised garden but decided to go with storage benches, another decision I am glad we made. His team took out all the pea gravel, jackhammered and removed the concrete slab, removed sand/dirt accordingly, removed all existing plants/trees. His team was very professional, they arrived/left at the same time everyday. We added two benches with storage which was a great hit during many play dates having multiple places for adults and kids to seat/play. We also store various toys, gym equipment (weights for me), bbq items in plastic containers so they do not get wet with the morning dew or rain. The bike storage unit is practically waterproof. Everything stays cool and dry even when it pours in the winter. The turf is still flat, no crazy gopher mounds like you get elsewhere in the Outer Sunset (they installed gopher wire below the turf). Our plants: *King Palms *Queen Palms *Fern trees *Podocarpus Elongatus (ice tree) *Giant Birds of Paradise *Other plants Inside Out also does maintenance and guarantees the plants for the 1st year. We have them come out monthly and have had them replace some of the smaller plants as some did not last. All of the large plants and trees are doing great along with the Giant Birds of Paradise. We also had Inside Out build us a trash bin area out front after they finished the backyard. Everything looks great! Many of our neighbors and friends have commented on how great our backyard looks. We even got a nice note from a neighbor we did not know saying how he enjoys waking up with the view of palm trees out of his bedroom window. David and his team at Inside Out did a fantastic job designing and planting a new back yard landscape for us in Pacifica. His knowledge of which plants will thrive in local microclimates and will look good together in a cohesive design resulted in a finished landscape that my wife and I are both really happy with. The team also installed a drip irrigation system that has worked really well so far. We wanted the job done fairly quickly due to an event we were hosting at our house, and I was nervous about the work not being finished in time. David reassured me that it was no problem, and he and his crew went from signed contract to demolition to irrigation to finished work in about 3-4 weeks. They were professional, responsive, and flexible throughout the work, including dealing with our irregular schedule and adjusting their schedule to accommodate us. All the plants are doing well so far, and we've hired Inside Out for regular maintenance to keep everything healthy and neat. While Inside Out is not the cheapest company, they work with you to stay within your target budget, and for the price you get a high level of expertise from David and his team. While perhaps we could have gotten some kind of landscaping done for a lower cost, I don't think we could have gotten such high-quality design and execution for any less. No sooner had they finished when a hummingbird and bluebird showed up to give their approval. The yard was sloped, rocky and full of weeds, rotten stumps and chunks of a decayed cement walkway. Now there are planting beds, a pebble walkway, an oval shaped lawn and a rear sun deck. David was very professional and patient-it took me quite a while to get it together and decide what I wanted and what I could afford. We engaged Inside Out for a project involved moving existing gravel, excavating existing dirt to lower surface lever, laying down gopher wire and heavy-duty weed barrier, and replacing a few grass plants that the dogs had destroyed. On the side, we also asked that Inside Out do some seasonal "deep cleaning" maintenance on our yard, which is gravel with mostly succulents. David had a two-man crew complete the project this February (delayed from January due to rain). TLDR: Overall, I would recommend working with Inside Out, after having worked with two other local landscaping services in the last year and a half, and intend to reach out to them for future projects. David is responsive and knowledgeable, and the crew was thorough and professional. The only reasons for not posting a full 5-star review are (1) this is a more expensive service (we did not engage Inside Out for a spruce-up of our front yard due to cost) and (2) some follow-up work wasn't quite as meticulous as the initial project. Pro: David was responsive to our initial inquiry in December 2018 and to our follow-up questions over the holidays. When we engaged Inside Out, we appreciated that David and team expressed opinions about what could work in our space and for our needs (which are largely driven by two small but high-energy dogs). The crew completed the project in two days and appeared to be thorough and efficient. The gopher wire and weed barrier looked great going down -- high quality and neat. They did a great job making aesthetic decisions about pruning back our existing plants and working with two different sizes of gravel that we supplied. The crew was also generally friendly and professional. Con: The only hitch with the project was minor -- the crew initially did not remove some existing grass plants when they put in new, hardier grass plants. David was super responsive when we inquired about follow-up and sent someone the next business day. The fix was not quite as meticulous as the initial job in that the crew did not excavate the area to be level, but they did cover the holes in the gopher wire and weed barrier when they took out the old grass plants. The seasonal "deep clean" maintenance on the yard (e.g., pruning back overgrown succulents, cleaning up all winter's worth of leaf litter, etc.) was well done, but not really different from similar maintenance that we've had done. read more

My project hit several unforeseeable issues because no one could have possibly known exactly what we would find once we dug up my drainage pipe. David asked me to send him a picture of our yard so he can have an idea what he would be dealing with and gave us a rough idea of how much we can expect to pay for the project. He came to our house to take a look at our yard a few days later. He gave a lot of advice on what to do and pull up sample pictures on his phone and showed us what we would like done with our yard. A few days later he send us an estimate with break down and what need to be done and how much it cost. When my husband and I bought our house in the Outer Sunset five years ago our realtor gave us some great advice: "Always go with a gardener who guarantees their plants for a year, otherwise you could end up with a yard of dead plants that cost thousands of dollars and nothing to show for it." Long story short - we did not heed this advice and first went with a gardener who did not guarantee her plants for a year... and we wasted a painful amount of money for dead plants and nothing to show for it. Very disappointing. The person who came out to assess an irrigation system job was clueless on how to approach it. Manscaping apologized and offered to refund the $65 we paid for the site visit. David then came out and did a good job analyzing the work that needed to be done and we were given a quote. But after we gave them the go ahead to proceed with the work, they never got back to us with a start date, despite several requests. In the end we gave up on hearing from them. UPDATE: David contacted me following my initial review. He explained that they had become very busy with the summer months and then both Jon and he were ill for awhile. I hired Manscaping to redo my front and back gardens, which had suffered from neglect for a couple of years due to a remodeling project that just kept going. David did a great job imagining what needed to be done, with little suggestion from me. In the backyard, his workers installed a retaining wall, redid our raised beds in beautiful redwood, installed a limestone planter around the large tree, redid our drip watering system, power washed, sealed, and relaid our flagstones, and dressed the place up with river rocks and gravel on the sides. The plants he suggested are beautiful and huge: giant birds of paradise, dwarf coconut palms, and cycads. In addition, they planted a bunch of cactus that I had been keeping in pots for 20 years. It looks amazing! The space has been transformed into a fantastic space for entertaining. In the front garden area, they removed the stucco from the concrete planter and discovered the planter was heavily cracked and damaged. He gave me several options for replacing it. I chose limestone to match the limestone planter in the back. It looks amazing! They also replaced some concrete areas in the driveway. They also did some repair work on our basement door that the remodeling guys left us with. It looks fantastic! Full disclosure - Manscaping doesn't want you to see this review. I had been saving this review for some time hoping to write about a resolution. Today, I received a release to sign forcing me to agree that I have not posted and "will not post any reviews of Manscaping on Yelp or any other internet website." in order to be reimbursed for repair work as agreed. Below is the review: Manscaping was hired to install a drought tolerant landscape designed by Beth Mullins from Growsgreen. This included the front yard plantings and native no-mow, one side yard planting and concrete, replacing existing back lawn with native no-mow, and gravel on the other side yard. The Manscaping owner, Dave Soffer, was only on site voluntarily to make the bod and then twice when the designer was there. Yet he made his foreman go through him on every little thing, which wasted a lot of time. When I requested that he come on site, he was sighing, huffing, puffing, making comments about charging his hourly rate and acting like he was doing me a huge favor. It's easier to overlook a negative attitude, questionable billing and lack of availability and customer service when the work is done well. Here are some things we experienced: - To add more sq ft of grass cost me $3.50 per sq/ft, yet removing saved me $1.50. - The crew was a no-show at least four times during my project. It should be noted that the crew is subcontracted by Manscaping, and not licensed. You are probably most interested in the quality of the installation - how the plants were planted, how the grown-in no-mow grass looks with the plants and lighting, of the plants are getting any irrigation, etc. - They installed the old, inefficient sprinklers for the drought tolerant, native no move. - They installed the standard size sprinkler risers instead of the taller ones that work when the no mow grass grows. The grass dies in many places. - They did not install check valves on our sloped lawn (required by CalWater for new installations). - They somehow removed the valve and pipes to our existing side yard drip. I have called several times to arrange for them to help with this, and I hired some one else to repair this. - When the repairs were done, the new landscape contractor found pvc pipe bits, glue cans and plastic wrappers buried in my yard. When the landscape designer saw the state of the yard, she suggested I reach out to Dave again as they are dependent on positive reviews. I did, and after speaking with the new contractor, he agreed to reimburse me $1519.04. However, not until I agree not to post a review. read more

These are two super nice and bright young men and they really know their gardens! I hired them on a recommendation from a friend & was so happy with their services. They took out a dead tree & planted a new, black bamboo tree that I love. They re-configured my irrigation system, recommended and then planted certain vines, laid out new weed blocker & generally cleaned up my backyard. I'll start at the end for my review of Manscaping and David Soffer. The end product was TREMENDOUS and turned out better than what we had originally imagined. We wound up with a beautiful new redwood fence, striking redwood bench and sandbox, lush grass for our daughter to play on, slick new patio, and a bunch of gorgeous plants. The project was completed within the agreed budget and did take longer than we expected but that was partially due to our change of plans along the way and inclement weather. In the end, we are very happy with the backyard redesign that David delivered and once this bad weather clears up we're intending to spend a lot of time out back! More details on the project: - DESIGN ABILITY: We were total newbies at the landscaping project and just knew we wanted to transform our worn out concrete backyard with something modern and new. David came by for an initial consultation and described his vision for the space after hearing what we wanted and it matched pretty well with our thoughts. We went with him primarily based on his design ability and aesthetic tastes that synced up with ours. He was quite patient in explaining things to us and answering our questions. The one critique I might have here is that we hoped that David would give us more options than he did and we wound up doing a lot of research on our own to figure out what types of options we had on a lot of things. Maybe this is something we should have expected to do and is normal, but again, we were newbies and could have used more guidance. In any case, we found David to have a strong sense and belief in his design style. - COMMUNICATION: This is an area that David could probably improve on in terms of more proactively informing his clients about what the overall plan and timing of when things are supposed to happen. We found ourselves having to make some last minute decisions because we weren't aware that work was waiting on us to move forward until the day before in some cases. We both have demanding jobs and a little one at home, so are not always able to make quick decisions on landscaping items (especially since they are new to us). With a little more advance warning as to when a decision needs to be made (maybe through a project timeline), we felt things could have gone smoother. Having said that, other aspects of communication with David were great. He always responded quickly via email or text and we felt like our project was a priority for him. Compared to other contractors we have dealt with, we think David is better than most. - EASY TO WORK WITH: We had our share of issues that came up in this project (neighbors, layout, etc.) but we found that David always approached the issue from the perspective of trying to resolve things and coming to an agreeable solution. One example was that we originally planned to go with artificial grass but then after doing more research discovered that a lot of the materials out there are not that kid-safe despite the marketing around it. Plus, it was a lot more expensive than real grass. An additional problem with real grass was how to water it since it surrounded a sandbox we built and the sprinklers could damage the sandbox over time. On top of all that, we were concerned with the drought situation in California of course. David shared our concerns and was able to come up with a innovative solution of having the grass installed with an underground drip irrigation system. This mitigated the inefficiencies of the old sprinkler systems (drip is much more water saving) and the water damage issue. In the end, the cost was still less than the fake lawn we were going to install anyway. We also found that David was always willing to redo things if we requested or go the extra mile to do things right. - FAIR BUDGET: From the get-go, David was willing to work with us on price knowing that we had a tight budget. I thought his prices were fair and reasonable especially for the end product that was delivered. Having done some detailed research on my own about cost of materials and plants, I was satisfied that David was not charging us any exorbitant mark-ups on anything. He was also thinking about ways to cut down on costs whenever possible. - GREAT CREW: The crew that David had out at our place was fantastic. Jose and Marvin were top notch craftsmen and also two of the nicest guys you will find out there. They were always willing to explain things to us and take time out to get our opinions on things. We marveled daily at their ability to get so much work done with just two people. - OVERALL: While there are things that David could work on to make things easier for his clients, we were overall extremely happy with the product delivered, happy with David's work style and responsiveness to our concerns, and felt like we paid a fair price for a lot of good work that was done. A few weeks back I noticed things were getting a bit shaggy, and yet again turned to Yelp for assistance in finding a good local company to take care of the necessary grooming. I chose Manscaping, partially because I liked the name, but also because the company was located in the neighborhood and had strong reviews. I was confident in the company the moment David showed up to quote a price. Just looking at the guy I could tell he was an expert in the art of gardening; he stepped out of the well rigged truck with a slight beard, flannel shirt and pruners on the belt. This is just the beginning of the story. After talking with David I could tell he was well versed not only in practical/sustainable landscaping techniques, but he also knew a mind blowing amount about local plants and what works well in our climate (he claims to have a library of books and references). Manscaping came by the next week for a simple clean up and provided such good service that they have become my regular landscapers. After each visit David has always followed up to ensure that the work was high quality, and we are in constant dialogue about various ways to improve the beauty and functionality of our space. We were looking for some landscapers/gardeners to put some life into our backyard. Manscaping came and took a look. David was very patient and after exchanging a few ideas and designs, we agreed to a layout and his people went to work. Coming up with a layout took the longest amount of time. Our project involved removing an existing sidewalk, cobblestone, bricks, and laying in a new walkway with a flagstone patio (not to mention a fence which needed to be replaced). The project took about two weeks. Updates were provided when needed. David is very knowledgeable about the native vegetation and we had many drought resistant plants installed. Manscaping has an expert crew who know what they are doing. They are polite, resourceful and do good work. Pricing is up front and there were no surprises (unless it was a surprise in your yard or something); again if so, David was up front and polite. I would highly recommend that you have them take a look at your yard if you're looking for landscaping ideas. PS They also did our front yard, two small plots with mulch. David has since replaced my plants that died shortly after planting and has been back to check on the garden. He also had some plants that had overgrown their space moved around. I'm very pleased with the garden now. read more
