I scheduled an appointment with GCSF for an on-site estimate. The problem was that I had been waiting at the correct location the entire time. Before the appointment, I had both verbally and in writing asked them to make sure they did **not** go to a different address in another town. The receptionist confirmed that the estimator had gone to the wrong address and assured me he would come to the correct one. Unfortunately, after waiting another hour, I never heard from the estimator or the office. My attempts to call the office also went unanswered. At that point, it became clear that no one was coming and no one was going to let me know. Mistakes happen, but what disappointed me most was the lack of communication and professionalism. GCSF wasted more than 90 minutes of my time and couldn't extend the courtesy of a simple phone call or update. Based on this experience, I can't recommend them.

This is to answer back Stephany S, the business employer…read more It's unfortunate that we only received a response from your team after we publicly raised our concerns through a Yelp review. For months, we called and followed up multiple times regarding the issues with the irrigation and the condition of the work, and we were repeatedly ignored. You were aware of who we were despite the Yelp review being under a different name because we were the ones consistently reaching out with no acknowledgment. Regarding the irrigation issue: the damage wouldn't have occurred if your crew had properly capped the existing irrigation before installing the pavers. The fact that you had to redo a section later at no charge doesn't negate that the issue was caused by your team's oversight in the first place. Had you taken responsibility and communicated with us when we initially reached out, we wouldn't have had to resort to a public complaint. It's disappointing that it took a Yelp review to get any kind of acknowledgment.

Over the course of a 1.5 week project, I would hear the crew chatting with each other and it seemed like they enjoy working together too. I reached out to about 10 contractors for quotes and Juan's bid was in the mid-range. From the first walk-through, he was knowledgable and asked questions to help me understand what my options are. Unlike some others, he was never pushy and that made me feel more comfortable about working together going forward. He estimated that the entire project (leveling the backyard, building a short wall, French drain, and adding gravel) would take 2 weeks and they finished ahead of schedule. I am so happy to finally have a usable, outdoor space! If I ever want to do more with the hill, I will use KB Landscape for sure.

The crew installed all the plants, decomposed granite, and irrigation perfectly. Our architect also commented that she really liked the crew and that Juan in particular was very knowledgeable. Not to mention Juan is just a really nice guy and was open to the small changes we had to make as we were doing installation. In total it took three weeks to complete the entire project. His crew was great and Juan also works with them, he doesn't just only project manage. He was here all day nearly every day with the crew. It's a small company but they do great work, pay attention to detail like grading, and clean up after themselves every day. They did such a good job, after he finished we asked him to help redo a fence later as well and also continue to come biweekly to maintain the yard.

This is the third landscaping…read morecompany we have worked with over our 4 years living here in San Mateo and we could not be happier. There are 3 big projects for which we contracted with Zarco Landscaping, because they continually performed above and beyond on the work. The first project was for a room that would flood when it rains. The team at Zarco quickly diagnosed the problem as poor gutter placement and cracks in concrete on the floor above, and they worked rapidly to connect a new sewer system and rebuild our concrete walkway. There has been no more flooding. The second project was to improve the terrain and usability of our backyard, which is on a hill that was very difficult to navigate. The Zarco team completely transformed the area, building stone steps and leveling the land with premium soil, mulch, and stone. Please see the attached photos (we wish we had before pictures, but it was all dirt and invasive plants before on a steep incline)! Lastly, our third project had to be done rapidly after the recent storms in the bay area. We needed three very large and dead trees removed that were at risk of falling on our house or the street. The Zarco team came the next day to remove all of the trees. Overall, the Zarco team has always delivered amazing service and treated us with respect. The prices are also very reasonable and competitive with quotes we received from other businesses. If you live in San Mateo or the Bay Area, we strongly recommend calling Zarco Landscaping for all of your outdoor needs!

There were a couple of miscommunications along the way, and we were impressed with how quickly and professionally he responded and went above and beyond to make sure we were happy. He even spotted some work done by other contractors that needed repairing and did the work. We plan to use Zarco Gardens for our future front yard project. Highly recommend!

In the end, he recommended making it a ground-level bed with a retaining wood barrier behind (my neighbor's side yard is higher than mine). His team worked really hard, especially as there turned out to be a huge root and stump that I had no idea was there (and which was expensive to remove). He also put in a new side gate as the existing one was so old as to be unusable. I am pleased with the result, and especially pleased to have had the work completed so soon and so quickly.

With the other company, as they were working in the garden, we discovered that 1) the retaining wall for all 3 tiers( with one tier supporting surrounding fence as well ) were curving, creating the gap on the edges. We spent $$ to add additional post between existing posts, instead of every 4 feet, we have a post every 2 feet now. 2) Our base-rocks was only 2-3". In our contract with Bloom and Lawn Landscape, it was supposed to be 5". Instead of paying additional $15000++ to fix this problem, somehow, miracles happened that I managed to get hold of Joel, the owner. He came with his new hire, Cesar to evaluate the problem. It seemed that Cesar responded to "my email", except he did not send it to me but only to his own team. I don't know what went wrong in the initial work. I decided not to pursue , we just want the repair done. Too much time and money wasted already. As per today, all the pavers and tuff have been reset. No original ground was removed, but instead they compacted existing ground, and they brought in more base rocks to top up. I did not get to check if it went up to supposedly 5" , I hope they are honest this time. Initially, the crew came once a week, on Saturdays to do the repair, so it took them over a month to complete our garden. After the 3rd Saturday, they came on weekdays too. It could have been done in 6 days. I was getting frustrated, I had to clean the pathway to garden almost every weekend in July after the crew left! I am giving 3 stars because they did a good job to reset the pavers . The crew are courteous and careful enough not to damage our interior ( backyard is lower than basement, with only entrance at street level). Cesar is responsive to my text messages and professional. I do think they are good at what they are doing. I have respect for the crews, not an easy job to be working outdoors in hot sun and strong winds, or foggy cold days. All and all, I am just glad that this is over. Now I just need to repair all the badly scratched up wood planks of retaining wall and wood stairs!
