Main concerns: Overcharged, performed service I didn't request, didn't perform the services I DID request, and quoted a male friend 50% less than me. And also oddly referred to some woman I've never seen there as a "stupid woman." Now, I have to take time out of my day to write a review that I tried to avoid for a couple of months, but no other choice now. I thought I had found a good, honest mechanic until I needed brake pads replaced and decided to get a tune-up too. I'll start with my biggest complaint: he charged me for a service I didn't request. He OVERcharged me for a service I didn't request. I then had a male friend call and ask for a quote on the same service on the same car - Jimmy quoted him 50% less than what he charged me. He gave me $40 cash back. Mind you- he charged me $80 and also didn't complete the full repairs that I went in for. The service I did NOT ask for- windshield wiper replacement. Windshield wipers were in my backseat to replace myself. So now I have windshield wipers I don't need and still paid for a service I didn't request, AND when I went back to get a partial refund, he blamed it on, and I quote, a "stupid woman." The number of times I've been in there and have only seen Jimmy and one other man have been...well, numerous. Unfortunate he's blaming the opposite sex and calling them stupid. Next, he only replaced one brake pad. My car is 10 years old with less than 90,000 miles. Jiffy Lube has been telling me for years I needed to have them replaced, so finally, when the squealing began and continued to get louder, I decided to bite the bullet and get them replaced- surely only a $400 or so cost, but not nothing. And with the car being a decade old, I figured - let's do that tuneup too. I tell Jimmy what I need and how I want her to run- he says, great, "$600 tops". Great! At pickup - it's $655.11. Okay, only $50 more. Fine. Jimmy goes on and on about how much work it was to change my spark plugs, which yeah, I'm not going to do it, that's why I took it to you and paid you to do it, JimmyI I do see a charge for windshield wipers, which sucks, but also I know that should only cost $30-$40 (free if you go somewhere and buy the $20 blades), so I leave. I get home and I see I've been charged $80...I'm furious. Livid in fact, luckily, I had to go to work. Unfortunately, I have a conscience and a dead dad, and I just needed to lament. So, my 70 or so year old co-worker and the dad of my boss became my ear- it's actually him who told me I needed to go get a full refund, leave a review, and never go back to him...this was three months ago. I really tried to defend Jimmy because he had also changed my clutch- expensive but needed to be done. Co-worker/boss dad says- "Ok," looks at me wearily, "I think you've been had, Honey." My response: "I know. Hopefully, it was only this one time." So, this is when I ask my friend to call up there and get the quote. He gets it and then tells Jimmy that he was asking on behalf of me. The friend says he could hear him sweating. Jimmy tells my friend he changed one front brake pad and evened out the other front brake pad. Again, 10 year old car, but sure- this could be a way to save me some money, though I don't know why he failed to mention this to the car owner and...well just continue on because I'll give a breakdown of the fees. Now, here we are today. 3 months later. My car is squealing louder than the screams in hell. I take it in there because I want him to replace the brake pad he was supposed to replace 3 months ago and I sure as hell won't be paying for that. The man looks at me like he's never seen me before. As a reminder- his tail was between his legs when he gave me $40 cash back - not a full refund on the service i didn't request that the "stupid woman" performed. But when he sees my car, I know he knows, because then he looked at me with a smug little grin and eyes that said, "stupid woman", which is why I'm here today writing this review. He tells me to come back in the morning- meanwhile, I know this man is planning to charge me full price- but what he doesn't know is I WORK MY A** OFF AND I WORK EVERY CHANCE I GET SO I CAN HAVE SOME SEMBLANCE OF LIFE! So I can't go back the next day or the next because I take work when I can get work. And I use my car for work. And I can't just go in and have a single break pad fixed. Now, yes, mechanics do up-charge on parts, so I figured I'd throw these numbers out for S**Ts and giggles. 1 brake pad - $79.48 Standard cost for 4 set $55-$75. Some other thing I can't read - $17.32 4 Spark Plugs - $62.26 Standard cost of 4 set - $10.99 Service Fees: Windshield wipers: $80 Brake pads, 2 front brake rotors, and tune up - He wrapped that all up to $380. Sales tax: 15.55 TOTAL: $655.11 Is it on me for not going back to double check all of this with a fine toothed comb- sure. But also, I've never felt so GD violated by a mechanic in my entire life. Jimmy has saved me once again! I moved out of LA and my Honda Accord could not be serviced for a oil change because the Oil plug threads were going. I took it to a place near me and he said $74 to change the oil pan which I thought was a great deal. I got the bill and it was $740. Jimmy said he would've installed a new oil pan plug for $50! I went back to the other mechanic and was able to get $400 back! I will never go to another mechanic again and will make the drive back into LA for my car repairs. read more

I had the misfortune of knocking my passenger side mirror off, + so for the past 3-4 months, it's been either awkwardly duct taped, rubber band contraption tied, or left dangling + scraping against the door of my car ... making weird whistling noises whenever I accelerated more than 40 mph. I made a trip to Jimmy at Pacific Auto in the early evening on a weekday to see what he could do to save me this time + to get a my back tail light fixed as well. He had plenty of other cars in the lot to be fixed, but he personally took care of me right away. Upon inspecting the poor, limp mirror, he smiled + said to me, "What did you hit? Some garbage bins or something?" ... Damn, how did he know??? -_- """"" He made a call to his parts people who told us it would be $200 for a new part, which wouldn't include his labor service charge to install the piece or paint to match my car. Being an honest mechanic, he knew that was too expensive + I agreed, especially since I didn't have much time. So I asked him if there was any way he could adhere the mirror back on in a way that was permanent but wouldn't do damage so that someday I could still get it fixed. Aaaand the unique solution he came up with? Screwing it on! Yes, literally drilling a few screws into the base of the mirror part. LoL! Unconventional + ghetto... but whatever. It's exactly what I needed so that I actually have a working mirror again. After fixing that + my tail light bulb, he only charged me $20 total for everything, + I was out of there in well under an hour. Awesome. I called a few shops for estimates, right from the get go, Jimmy at PAS was the only one who gave me a straight answer. When I took the car over to the shop I asked him about what I thought it could be and also about additional issues I thought my car had and he gave me very honest opinions and saved me some money by telling me not to worry about those other things as they would not affect my car's drive ability. He estimated the window at a lower price than originally mentioned (as the part turned out to be less), and completed the job within three hours, returning the vehicle to me on the same day! I was a long time customer (8 years) of Jimmy"s at Pacific Auto. He provides fast service for a reasonable price. However; he works too fast and does NOT CHECK HIS WORK. He replaced the rear axles on my car and when it came back there was a clunk in the rear end upon acceleration. He wasn't sure but he thought it was the differential. I limped it to a suspension specialist, we put it on the lift and it was IMMEDIATELY OBVIOUS that he had NOT tightened the bolts from the drive shaft to the universal joint at the rear axle. Completely loose, as in a 1/4" of exposed thread between the nut and the u joint. So much space that it cluncked when accelerating. If I had stepped on it, on the highway I would have snapped the bolts and who knows what would have happened. He also put the lift thru the floor board on the driver's side and didn't notice and didn't tell me. He repaired an electrical issue only to find out a few days later that none of my notification chimes work, headlights on, seat belts, key in the ignition, etc. So, for basic repairs, A/C, electrical issues, lube job, things that will not impact your safety yah, you should be able to trust him BUT for anything safety related RUN AWAY, FAR AWAY read more

I came in here wanting for an oil change with my own oil. I plan to use my remaining Amsoil oil one last time and just go to the auto shops and just use their oil for the succeeding oil changes. Where do I start? Met Jimmy through a referral. 12 years ago, I have had many problems with my cars. So I have not gone to see him much. But he doesn't try and up sell you or rip you off. These people who give one star are the odd anomaly. I think if your mad you're car is broken and have to come off some cash. You exude a bad attitude. He may not want your negative energy and deflects you away. But he is a good soul so treat people like you want to be treated. Cars breaking is part of life. So go with the flow. I live below the poverty line, really. So I made the mistake of going to well known mechanic for and expensive round one maintenance. Timing belt change and water pump. I thought it was specialized work. Because it's a Lexus But I went to Jimmy and the Valve sensors they wanted to replace only needed to be reset. The bushings they wanted to did need replacing and cost me about the same. But I wanted to see if the even changed the timing belt because I felt like the shop was shady. From now on gonna bring my car back to where I trust the integrity of the mechanic. read more

Jimmy, the owner, is a great guy who won't try to pull the wool over your eyes so he can "fix" something that ain't broke. He came recommended to me by a friend after I scoffed at the idea of spending $600+ to get my car the 80K mile checkup. Plus, Jimmy works on Volkswagens, which not every mechanic does. Even Pep Boys wouldn't work on my car without an appointment, and it was going to take all day they warned me so I'd have to drop it off at 8 a.m. and get it back at the end of the day. With Jimmy, I was pleasantly surprised. I'd put up with a lot of BS from other mechanics, but Jimmy told me on the phone it shouldn't be much more than $200 to do the necessary checkup/upgrades/whatever. And he was right. It ended up being more than expected because he replaced my spark plugs, but still it was only $261. Less than HALF of what another stupid mechanic quoted me -- the typical charlatan mechanics. Oh, and Jimmy worked on my car RIGHT AWAY when I brought it in, no appointment necessary! He was really friendly, too, so I will definitely come back if I have car troubles! read more

I live down the street from this place and was relieved to know a good mechanic is fairly close to me. I found him after reading the Yelp reviews and can honestly say Jimmy definitely doesn't want to screw you over like every other mechanic does. As a woman, its touch--mechanics stereotype and see us as suckers. For example, I went to a ritzy Silverlake mechanic (cough cough Hi-Tec) and they told me I had all these problems with my BMW and that basically I needed to put like 3 grand into. I was outraged and this guy didn't put my car on the dolly or anything just gave it a once over and came up with that number. I don't want to scrimp on car service, but that's just outrageous. Rewind to NOW. Jimmy is great. He is honest and won't charge me an arm and leg. I've been to him twice. Once when I had my service engine soon light on and the other because both my taillight sockets are deciding to pop out at the same time. For the first time, I was a little overwhelmed--the lot is small and there are like 4-5 cars all waiting for Jimmy to look at it. It's a bit hectic so my advice-go early and NOT on a Saturday. Jimmy looked at my car and said I would eventually need to replace a part that would cost $80 but that it was still perfectly fine. NO CHARGE. Then for my taillight issue, he looked at it and suggested I may need to replace them and to call a dealer or a price BUT to let him know how much they planned to charge and if it was too much, he would try to figure it out. I called Pacific BMW in Glendale and to replace the parts would be about $50 each, not including labor. I called Jimmy and told him the amount and he said "Oh no, that's too much. Bring it back and I'll do something." Basically he explained that the socket was not locking back with the car but that it still looked fine and in order. He put some tubing in the lock hole so it would stay in place and it has! For both sides! Only $20. I realize this is kind of a "jimmy-rig" (no pun intended) but I can't really afford an extra $150 on just taillights when dealers will always up-sale and up-charge me. PROS: Honest, affordable CONS: Jimmy is bit hard to understand so try to be patient. Also, it's crazy and a bit unorganized on the weekends so try to go during the weekdays. Since he's honest, I think he can be perceived as a bit blunt or maybe even rude (not to me). And as some other reviewers mention him being rude on the phone, I could see that...I think he's not hurting for business since he's so popular but bear in mind, it's only him and I think 2 other mechanics with tons of people wanting to see him. I'm not trying to excuse the behavior, but it's kind like how foreigners can be rude and blunt but they don't really mean to be--same thing. Final Thought: Jimmy is a good mechanic...for right now. I know my car is expensive and has expensive parts and it likes to all fall apart at one time so I need to cut costs while still making the car safe to drive. He is honest and will get me the best deal and wants to save me money. But, I may be jimmy-rigging my car only to be paying for it in the end for some larger repairs. I'm dumbfounded by a $0 bill coming from a mechanic. The Story: I woke up to a car that wouldn't start. After getting my car towed to Jimmy upon recommendation from a friend. Jimmy informed me my car was working perfectly and after a close inspection had nothing at all wrong with it. Just to be safe, I asked him to keep the car over night to see if it would fail to start the following morning. The car started without any problems. Fully expecting a "diagnostic test" and "housing" fees, I took a Lyft to Silver Lake to pickup my car that afternoon. I asked Jimmy what I owed, bracing myself for the worse. He told me owed nothing and my mind was blown... I'll definitely come back once my car develops actual problems. P.S. He even put air in my tires :) read more

Jimmy is the best mechanic we know! My husband discovered him when he worked nearby. Now, we live in Culver City and it's not at all convenient to visit him when we have a car problem. BUT WE STILL DO. As long as Jimmy's alive and kickin', we'll be loyal customers. A few reasons: 1) He's HONEST. He'll never do a repair you don't need and he'll tell you frankly what you do need. 2) He's ACCOMMODATING. Looong story short, he helped us arrange a tow from Hollywood to his shop and the subsequent repair and payment on our car...over the phone while we were stuck in Houston. I can't imagine any other mechanic being as patient, resourceful, or easy to work with. 3) He's AFFORDABLE. Go ahead, call around for estimates. I guarantee Jimmy will give anyone a run for their money. 4) He's GOOD. Simply, his repairs stick. And if they don't, he'll fix it again for free. My husband's car for many years had a bum catalytic converter. It was a yearly (expensive) fix. But not after Jimmy fixed it, for good. Oh yeah, and during that repair, he also went ahead and fixed a similarly intractable oil pan leak, without us asking him to (we'd been told it was impossible/prohibitively expensive by other mechanics), gratis. I must be a complete anomaly here bc my situation was completely different than all the other posts here. After reading all these reviews plus a referral from a friend I took my car to Jimmy. He was very helpful and immediately looked at my car. I took my car in because the air conditioning wasn't working and there was a leak. Jimmy agreed to fix my car but told me there wasn't a leak, I told him three (3) times there was a leak but he disagreed and recharged my AC unit. I was pumped the AC worked for four days until it stopped working again. I took it back to Jimmy and he said "oh must have a leak". I bit my tongue because I told him three times already there was a leak. The conclusion is my air compressor is bad and needs replacement, I asked Jimmy if I would get a credit for the previous work to go towards the new work being done and Jimmy said no. After me telling him I was unhappy with the service he offered me a $35 refund, which I never went to pick up. I felt as if Jimmy took advantage of me, did not guarantee his work, offer a refund/credit and most importantly ignored me when I told him there was a leak. I've owned my car for 11 years and know a leak when I see one. I would have appreciated a more thorough examination of my car before I spent the $80, I am cheap but want the work done right. Now I am paying another mechanic $800 to properly fix my car and won't be going back to Jimmy. After this whole ordeal I agree Jimmy is kind and very helpful but don't think he stands behind his work and probably does the bare minimum to keep the cars running and costs low. read more

I have been going to this garage for a few years now for my different vehicles and I have to say that there isn't a mechanic I would trust more than Jimmy. The nicest and most honest mechanic I have ever met. He always charges me an excellent price. He gives me tricks to save money. He even sends me out to buy stuff so I can save money or explain me how I can do it myself. I mean, who would do this?! He's always ready to help. Once he stayed open late just for me as I had an emergency and needed my vehicle the very next morning for work. Not only did he say late but came early the next morning to fix my car right away. I have never seen this before. I completely trust him. He's so busy and has so many customers due to his reputation that he's actually in a position to refuse work.
