Having just moved from the bottom of the earth in South America back to the good old US of A after 3+ years abroad, I was not sure that I wanted to jump back into Argentinian cuisine. But while on a Great American Road Trip, the hubby was craving steak, so I obliged. Boy am I glad we did! Pablo's is amazing as was our server Betsy. In South America, normal dinnertime is 8 p.m. or later, so I'm still getting used to "early" restaurant closing times in the US. We rolled into the quaint beachside town of Bandon, OR around 7:30 p.m. After a quick walk down the pier and through town, the hubs called Pablo's to see if they were still serving dinner (normal closing time is 8:30). To our delight, they were, so we walked over and were lucky to get one of the few tables under a "covid bubble." These little transparent dining pods are perfect not just for health reasons but also because they keep diners warm on cool nights. When I first saw the menu, I was a little surprised at the prices, but quickly realized that with only a handful of tables and high-quality ingredients, the prices were actually reasonable. We ordered a bottle of Mendoza Malbec (why on earth would you order anything else at an Argentinian restaurant?!?) as well as the shareable $130 steak dinner that comes with empanadas, salad, sides, and steak. What a deal! Everything was so delicious. We each had the Árabes empanadas (we can confirm that Argentina's empanadas are much better than Chile's, and Pablo's did not disappoint). Normally, my hubby isn't much of a salad guy, but the salad that accompanied the empanadas was so delicious, he scarfed it down to everyone's surprise. Pablo chatted with us between courses and we learned that he used to play soccer (futbol) in Argentina, his family is still there, and he recently trained under a Michelin-starred chef in Italy. When ordering dinner, we made an unusual request that Pablo graciously accommodated: hubby wanted his side of the steak medium-rare while I wanted mine medium. It was great. The grilled veggies (peppers, onions, zucchini) and pesto pasta were terrific. I had not had pine nuts since before we moved south, so that was a real treat after so many years without it. I was so stuffed from all the great food that I couldn't finish the pasta or veggies, so I took those to go and ended up eating them for breakfast the next day (don't judge, it was delicious and filling). If you want a really special, personalized dining experience with an internationally trained chef, you absolutely must visit Pablo's. If you have no interest in enjoying authentic Argentinian cuisine, Argentinian wine, and chatting with the chef, go somewhere else. read more

How do I begin? It has been some time since I have had a meal this good. The empanadas were out of this world, and even the greens that came with them were dressed with an insanely good dressing. We had ribeye and a Bolognese pasta dish, which were both delightful, but I'm convinced any item on the menu would have been out of this world. The service is solid and honest. We were not sure about which wine to get with our meal, and were provided honest advice on a good wine at a fair value. It turned out to be perfect. So Pablo's is a tiny little place in downtown Bandon. There are about four tables. When you walk in you feel like you are walking into someone's cozy home. Pablo himself greeted us from the kitchen and came out to tell us about his daily empeñada. Betsy brought us wine lists and the told us about the local beer they had. They were both so nice and welcoming. That was wonderful but the food here is the star. We got the porterhouse which was cooked perfectly medium rare. The chimichurri sauce on top was fresh and clearly home made. The soup and the beef empeñada we started with were so delicious. We had a side of homemade pasta that was to die for. Our chocolate cake dessert was amazing. I cannot recommend this gem enough. If you find yourself in Bandon for any reason make it a point to try. But when we got the hand written check, we were charged twice for same bottle of wine by the waitress and some other items were over charged. If you pay by credit card, there is a 5% surcharge. I don't know how this place has such positive reviews... Our bill was $136 before the tip. I was fully prepared to spend a decent amount of money on dinner tonight. We're visiting my parents and they volunteered to watch my 5 month old so we could have a date night. I eagerly accepted their offer and started looking at Yelp for the best eats Bandon had to offer. I came across Pablo's Corner and was impressed with the 5/5 star rating. I've never seen a restaurant with such an impressive reputation! I didn't even bother looking at the reviews--I just took the 5 stars as a good enough sign and called to book a reservation. When we arrived the staff were very accommodating and friendly. The hospitality is the only reason why I'm even giving a two star rating, otherwise it would be a solid single star. The service was great, but the food is drastically overpriced. I've found that Bandon loves their half bottles of wine, however, La Crema is a $15 FULL bottle of Chardonnay available at Target, but Pablo is charging $26 for a half bottle. I ordered the La Crema split for $26 since I was obviously familiar with the wine and knew I liked it, but was brought The Prisoner for about $36(?) and didn't notice until I had already opened the bottle. It was a dreadful wine and made me shudder every time I took a sip. I would suggest doing glasses of a higher quality for about $20 each, like Rombauer chardonnay. My husband ordered a Modelo so not much to report about that. I had the special, which was spinach pasta with housemate sausage, sun dried tomatoes, and goat cheese. It was pretty good, but the lack of sauce made it a little awkward since I needed to dig through the pasta to find pieces of sausage and tomato to make it flavorful. My husbands ribeye though...yikes. $60 for a ribeye steak is already a little ridiculous. I've eaten at establishments that offer filet mignon for $60, but besides that the amount of fat on this steak was offensive. I saw a response to another poor review from the owner that states leaving the fat on is the Argentinian way, but the amount on this cut was not at all enjoyable. My husband loves fatty steak, so much so that I usually cut off the fat on my steak and give it to him, but the amount of fat on his steak at Pablo's left him feeling queasy and the only reason he finished it was because it was $60. We got dessert, which was ice cream cake spiked with rum...nothing spectacular at all. It's simply just ice cream cake that you could get from Safeway. In such a high end establishment, I would expect a soufflé, crème brûlée, or a mousse. Ice cream cake is good for a birthday party, but not for such a pricey dining experience. Nothing is worse than spending money on food you didn't enjoy. If our bill at Pablos Corner was half of what it came out to be, I probably wouldn't have minded as much, but $136 + tip to leave unhappy is even more heartbreaking. We unfortunately will not be back, despite the friendly service. read more

Super small and quaint family owned business. Nothing fancy and the service can be slow but the food was delicious. We got black ink squid pasta with scallops and shrimp - this was a special and loved the white wine and butter sauce that wasn't too heavy. Also great amount of seafood! We just bought the Bandon Wayside Motel in August and tend to be people who cook at home. However... ....when we want to treat ourselves with a night of amazing food Pablo's is where we go! Not only is it some of the best food on the coast, but their steak is one of the best I've had in my life, and we both have lived in some major foodie cities (Nyc, Sf, pdx, Nola, Austin). It's melt-in-your-mouth tender and cooked to perfection each and every time! Oh and those empanadas? Get them. Try them all! I have a home in the Mission of SF where empanadas are a'plenty, and I think Pablo's chicken variety beats them all, hands down. It's crave-able, which is what I look for in a Restaurants's offerings. I need to *crave* it!! First off, ignore whoever wrote the ridiculous review below. If your check is incorrect, you simply point that out, and the waitress will fix it. And tons of places are charging credit card fees now, another reason to go back to using cash!! What you need to know, is that eating at Pablo's is an experience. An actual "experience". The place has 4-5 tables. Make a reservation. Pablo comes out when everyone arrives and describes his specialties for the night. He & the staff are very interactive, and they make you feel like you are dining with family and friends from the moment you enter the door!! Do not be surprised if you know everyone in the room by the end of your meal. They have a new guy from Spain, who is a master mixologist... his drinks are ahhhhmazing!! The food is truly special. I wish there had been a vegan option but I'm grateful two of the empanadas (arabes and criollas) were dairy-free at least. I could tell the ingredients are carefully selected for quality and cooked with care because the food was so exquisitely delicious and I didn't feel sick after eating beef like I normally do. The two beef empanadas tasted distinctly different from one another, both delicious but I liked the criollas best because the green olives and egg paired so well with the beef. Another person in my party got the pollo empanada and said it was amazing as well. I also loved the orange juice! It's pricey at $6 for a small glass, but it's organic and they literally squeeze it to order. Tastiest, freshest orange juice I ever had. Overall the food is just worth it. I've never tasted anything like it, simply marvelous in terms of both flavor and texture. The service was super friendly and the wait time was acceptable. I don't know who leaves the good reviews because this place is unbelievably overpriced. He gets his wine at grocery outlet for 7$ and charges 50 exact same wine. My wife got pasta seafood it had 3 scallops and 4 shrimp for like 35$ it was good but we left hungry. I got the caddy special it was a joke some pasta and some mystery meat not good. This Old World charm little restaurant is full of heart and it comes across in the dishes which were served to us by Pablo after he prepared them for us. The salads were made with obviously fresh lettuces with a simple balsamic dressing so their freshness wasn't drowned. We are farmers ourselves so appreciate this kind of care that Pablo puts into what ingredients he plates. With only four tables inside, you're bound to make friends with the other diners, as we did. We had a really great experience here. They were basically closed but Pablo and Betsy happily agreed to feed us regardless. I love supporting a small business run by people who are clearly passionate about what the do and Pablo is the quintessential example of someone who loves to create great food. We had the ribeye and the Caprese empanada. Both were excellent- the chimichurri on the ribeye was fantastic and the caprese empanada was rich and the perfect comfort food. We hope to come back soon for the homemade pasta. This is a small, unique little place- if you want a polished chain restaurant go elsewhere, but if you want to support a small business owner hustling for what they love this is probably your place. Upon arrival the staff was incredibly friendly and the atmosphere was very cozy. The wife and I shared a Cubano and were brought a complimentary bowl of some soup I don't remember the name of but was very delicious with some pork and hominy I believe.
