I like many other Yelper's out there love all things animals. I have two dogs and a cat, so I am always looking for cool pet stores where I can buy treats and toys for my beautiful furbabies. Also, I have just moved houses, so I was on the search to find a new destination for my supplies. One thing that I really love about Yelp is that it point's me in the right direction constantly. I go to all the cool shops now. Places where locals love and want to share the love! And this brings me to P&K pets. This store is surprisingly big! From the street it looks like a pokey little store, but head on into it and it just keeps going! My only disappointment was that it doesn't really have a carpark (unless I missed it anywhere?), so I had to park in the pub carpark. But not too far of a walk to the store and not that this would deter me from going back. This store has such a huge selection of products for all different types of animals. Also, the animals that they sell look very happy and healthy.There are lizards, fish, bunnies, turtles, etc... I even saw two pet Kookaburras. Wow! As for dog food and toys, a brilliant selection with great brands to choose from. Well priced and they offer a 5% off when you join up as a member of the store. I signed up in a flash! Every dollar counts. They also pointed out that the discount only applies to full priced items. Fair enough. The staff are so super friendly and so happy to help! They even offered to help me carry my massive bag of dog food to the car. How sweet! They helped me find what I needed and offered me some great advice for my pets. P & K Pets is one of the largest pet stores I've seen, and it's collection of fish and furry critters is beyond impressive. I went to this a while ago to buy my girlfriend some fish. I'm warning you right now - if you think that fish are easy to look after, you couldn't be more wrong. They require a lot more care than dogs or cats, will die on you at any sudden moment, and don't give you any love in return. Despite all this, the staff at P & K really know their stuff. They gave me all of the materials and equipment required to properly look after the fish and information on which fish live well together. I usually hate going in to pet stores and seeing a whole lot of puppies and kittens locked away in plastic boxes. Fortunately P & K Pets is an ethical pet shop, and they no longer sell kittens or puppies in the shop. Furthermore, they refuse to keep any pets in the store if the temperature is above 33 degrees celcius. It's comforting to know that these guys really care about the welfare of these animals, and if I am ever to buy another pet in the future, I'll know where I can get pets that are genuinely well looked after. read more

Having a furbaby on the way meant we have a good enough reason to loiter around all the pet stores in adelaide and pretend to look competant and not utterly confused at all the different kibbles and harnesses. Great advice here, they knew A LOT about our breed so that was really exciting. Most of the beds are south australian made (go aussie) and they stock a pretty large selection of toys. Mid to upper margin prices but the selection range justified it. Pet friendly too so will be back with our puppy to pick out toys!! P & K is an excellent destination for fish - one thing I really appreciate is that they frequently have tanks under treatment and won't sell fish from them until they're sure they've recovered. I tend to drop in for livestock on a friday - fresh stock comes in during the week and has had time to stabilise a little after shipping, and it's before the stress (for the fish) of the weekend, when nets keep intruding into the tanks and their friends disappear. If you're wondering what fish work with others, you can ask here - they'll give you honest advice about what you can and can't put together. They don't have a huge range of ultra exotic species like some dedicated aquarium shops, but they do certainly get some different fish in. One stand out here is Borneo Sucker fish - they're a tropical algae eater with a more rounded body than a bristlenose, and they stay nice and small - you can actually watch them vacuum algae and slime off the glass of your tank, and they don't go after slow moving fish. They have live brine shrimp, too - you get a huge serving, more than enough to give two good feeds to a big community tank. One of the better fish selling pet shops around town. read more

It's a good shop, for sure. I buy feeder fish for Neil, my Eastern Long Necked Turtle. I also occasionally pick up stuff like filters and various goodies for the aquarium if I find a good deal or just need it urgently. The staff here know what they're doing, and it's clear that they're all very enthusiastic animal lovers (no, not that way, you sick, sick person). The prices are pretty standard on foods and stuff, but there are good deals from time to time. read more

LOVE this pet store. Went on a Saturday with the new pup. He was welcomed in the store, despite a thwack of the tail sweeping into some stacked ceramic dog bowls (no breakage, thank goodness). The store was well-staffed with knowledgeable people. They didn't try to sell you the most expensive items, but the ones that would be likely to work for you. I found their prices very reasonable and a good selection of items. If retailers want to hold onto their storefront businesses, this is a good model to look at: knowledgeable, friendly staff; plenty of them; good product selection; good prices; customer service with an eye towards keeping long term customers rather than making a one-off sale.
