After reading so many positive reviews, I succumbed to a groupon for the walking tour. If you buy the groupon, you get a great deal for 2 adults to take the tour, as well as a $10 credit at their farm store. Once you take a look at their store, you know there's no way you could leave here empty-handed. They sell steaks and chops from every farm animal you can think of, as well as fresh eggs and Amish butter rolls and aged raw milk cheese, and even kombucha. There is a clever young boy behind the cash register, and he will persuade you to buy everything in stock. Their items are very reasonably priced for grass-fed/free-range/happy meats and dairy products, especially when you're tired of paying too much at Whole Foods for lesser quality and freshness. If you have a genuine interest in learning how a farm works, then you would enjoy taking a tour here, as it's very informative. The manager, Amy, is a wonderful tour guide. She is very patient and will answer everyone's questions. We learned about how they rotate their farm animals to improve soil quality, and about what and how they feed the animals. I wouldn't recommend bringing kids here unless they are extremely interested in farms, and are very patient. Otherwise, they will be bored to tears and will ruin the fun for the farm dorks, like me. If you think this is a petting zoo, it's not. You will see plenty of farm animals running around and/or freely grazing, but it's understood that they don't want folks chasing those free range chickens around. The whole tour took over 2 hours, which was a little long for me, so I left a bit early to hit up the farm store before the rest of my tour group did. I even ordered one of their last turkeys for Thanksgiving, which I'm beyond stoked about. I'd highly recommend this tour. Be a little patient, and eat a big breakfast before you come. There are no lunch options within walking distance, so unless you plan on snacking on a hunk of cheese, you might get hungry after the drive and the walking tour and the ooohing and aaahing at these beautifully kept grounds. read more

Such a late post: Thanks to Groupon, I took my mom on a farm tour since it was Mother's Day weekend. We both enjoyed all the information about the animal care, farm practices, cheese making, etc. The blue cheese was my fave and we also bought some beautiful, colorful fresh eggs. great cheese but cannot get through to place an order. i recently had an internet issue and could not place an order on the phone easily. when i got my email service back i sent my request and i still do not know if it is being sent out. i believe a great biz like theirs should have someone answer their phones during biz hrs and/or continually check their phone and email messages. my entire wk is devoted to getting through to them and receiving the wonderful cheese. honestly i sometimes ask myself is their great cheese worth the effort. on some days i say yes it is and on others i say it is not. to note their cheese is ten stars out of five, but the complexity of ordering is a zero, so i figured on three stars read more

Such a great experience here! Took the 1.5 hour drive with my boyfriend here today and not only was the scenic drive so nice, when we got there everyone we came in contact with went above and beyond to give us a great experience. We picked up a great variety of things, my favorites being the raw cheddar and the maple cream. So good! At one point I had a string come loose on my cardigan and I asked the employee for a scissor- she informed me she knows how to knit and could fix the thread for me so I wouldn't have to cut and potentially damage my cardigan. She spent about 15 minutes fixing it for me while we shopped! It was very nice and I was so appreciative of her going the extra mile. Cant wait to come back!! I did a farm visit and meal with my nutrition based group. Mike, Sally, and Barbra helped out on the two hour long tour. It was so educational. I think it would be a great trip for people of any age, of any food knowledge background. The farm is gorgeous. Their food extremely responsibly created and super tasty! The lunch they provided was huge! Additionally, you can buy animal products in their store, including meats, and wonderful raw milk cheeses! P.A. Bowen Farmstead is a wonderful addition to Southern Maryland. My family lives near the farm and frequently purchases our pork, chicken, butter, eggs, and cod liver oil from their shop. Once you taste their pork it will be hard to eat pork from anywhere else! They have a wonderful tour on Saturdays where visitors can learn all about their unique way of farming. They also offer valuable classes and family friendly events for the community. It's definitely worth a visit! read more

So glad we purchased the Groupon for this place. The tour was great not too long and not too short, very informative. At the end, we used our credit to purchase pork ribs and chicken gizzards and it was so good! Best tasting ribs and gizzards I've ever eaten. We definitely will be coming back. read more

I bought this book called Nourishing Traditions a few weeks ago, and then completely unrelated, I went with a friend on a farm tour this past weekend (P.A. Bowen). When I got home one night, I was looking at the book, and saw a picture of Sally ( our tour guide). I began to put 2 and 2 together, wow. I cant believe she is the same lady! This guru of health, this author, I had just received a tour from her and had no idea!! We loved the tour by the way, it was so informative and she was approachable and answered all questions. Everyone had the best time, the animals were so tame and the children really enjoyed it as well. Thanks so much for running such a great farmstead. Buy the groupon and enjoy the tour. Learned some fascinating facts about livestock and cheese. Personally, the making of cheese was the most interesting part of the tour. I have no idea why... Bring an ice chest just in case, you get an urge to purchase their meats. Pork, beef, chicken, organ meats, etc... Its very expensive but you'll taste the difference. Maybe its in my head but the chicken defintely tasted different, in a good way. read more

I was surprised after reading other reviews, because before leaving to visit the farm this last Saturday I looked over everything about the farm on their website. It was plainly stated that GMO (beet pulp) had been used for a short time and the one time antibiotic on one of their animals. It was also explained to everyone at the very beginning of the tour. The farm was wonderful and gorgeous. The people are BEYOND friendly and very interactive with my children. The lady working in the store went above and beyond to help my daughter who had gotten car sick on the way to the farm! Well, worth the visit and we enjoyed all of our purchases after we got home. It was a wonderful, educational day at the farm. We were treated to a two hour tour of their family farm, including how they got started, what they are currently building into their farm and anything else you could possibly have asked. It was very informative and we all really learned alot about practical farming (even though I grew up in rural PA and have already been exposed to quite a bit of farm life). There was quite a bit to see including: chickens, cows, calves, turkeys, ducks, pigs, chickens, as well as their cow milking area, chicken coops, pig pens, turkey pen and finished off with the family farm store - homemade cheeses, lots of fresh meat products, butter and produce. WOW! I went on a tour of P A Bowen Farmstead and was truly amazed. Sally Fallon made it seem so easy and clearly farming is hard work but the practical approach she takes is indeed a bright light at the end of the tunnel of the way to long term health and nutritional foods! During the tour you'll see how they make cheese and restore the health of the land that the animals use by rotation. Very interesting. The eggs I took home had wonderful dark golden color yolks and the bacon was delicious. I thought the prices were in line with what you pay in the market for the cheese but higher for other items but the quality makes it worth while. By the way the cheeses were fantastic. The farm was wonderful and the people were warm and very friendly and very interactive. I had a great time and will definitely go back often. We used to go to this farm religiously. Within the last two months however, and after new manager Brian has taken over, the farm has started feeding genetically modified sugar beets to their cows and has used antibiotics. While this has gone on....there has been no advertisement of the changes to us customers. They still advertise that they NEVER use GMO's or antibiotics. This is not transparent at all and completely against everything they say they stand for. I will no longer be going to this farm which I am extremely upset about but I cannot trust them anymore in their decisions. I have email exchanges between Sally and I as proof to all of this as well. And yes, considering the quality has decreased, the price is way too high. read more

My husband and I bought the groupon for the farm store and store credit. Our tour was given by the owner, Sally, who was knowledgable and friendly. The tour lasted about 2 hours, and we saw cows, chickens, pigs, geese, and ducks. It was certainly a hands-on tour, and we learned a lot about farming and cheese making! The farm did offer a very informative presentation on cheese making and gave you up close access to observe the animals. The tour size is small so you can ask questions and don't feel rushed. Several children were in our group and all seemed to be engaged and got a unique opportunity to get up close to the animals. read more

Just finished a delicious breakfast of sunny side up eggs I picked up after the farm tour yesterday! The tour was well planned, educational and I think would be fun for anyone. It offered a lot of information about their farming practices and included opportunities to get up close to the animals, which the kids on our tour enjoyed. Afterwards, our group stayed and had lunch at one of the picnic tables they have set up just outside the store. The cheese we bought there was fantastic (it was the cheddar reserve) and the setting was beautiful. While the prices may seem high compared to traditional grocery store prices, it was no more than what I pay at farmers markets and places like Whole Foods for eggs and cheeses that are supposedly similarly produced and probably not quite as fresh. My only complaint is that there aren't more farms like this! read more
