There is a full wine bar as soon as you walk in that is about as prominent as the cheese selection, and there is a clear passion for pairing these two. Sampling a few cheese and wine pairings, then grabbing a bottle and a quarter pound of our favorites with a freshly baked baguette on the side makes for a really lovely evening. It can definitely get busy, but service is always friendly. They also have a little import specialty shop in the back (yes, there's a back...it's around the corner!) where you can often find some foodie goodies. This is a low-key place that is a true staple. And their events are always extra fun!

There was a lot of care and detail taken into the presentation and personalization of the order, including cute little house-shaped cheese slices and "Happy New Home" cheese cubes. The taste and quality of all of the items was also fantastic! Sarah's order form was one of few that let us fully customize our order from selecting what types of cheeses we wanted to letting us do "pepperoni only" as we aren't huge ham or salami people. She included a great variety of items as well! In addition to the charcuterie box, we also got two small containers of pickles and a box of breads, crackers, cookies, chocolates and chocolate covered pretzels. Our order even came with mini jars of honey, seasonal jellies and mustard! Sarah's prices were unmatched, and she even offers delivery! This order will definitely be the first of many! We highly recommend Sarah and can't wait for our next order!

After reading so many positive reviews, I succumbed to a groupon for the walking tour. If you buy…read morethe groupon, you get a great deal for 2 adults to take the tour, as well as a $10 credit at their farm store. Once you take a look at their store, you know there's no way you could leave here empty-handed. They sell steaks and chops from every farm animal you can think of, as well as fresh eggs and Amish butter rolls and aged raw milk cheese, and even kombucha. There is a clever young boy behind the cash register, and he will persuade you to buy everything in stock. Their items are very reasonably priced for grass-fed/free-range/happy meats and dairy products, especially when you're tired of paying too much at Whole Foods for lesser quality and freshness. If you have a genuine interest in learning how a farm works, then you would enjoy taking a tour here, as it's very informative. The manager, Amy, is a wonderful tour guide. She is very patient and will answer everyone's questions. We learned about how they rotate their farm animals to improve soil quality, and about what and how they feed the animals. I wouldn't recommend bringing kids here unless they are extremely interested in farms, and are very patient. Otherwise, they will be bored to tears and will ruin the fun for the farm dorks, like me. If you think this is a petting zoo, it's not. You will see plenty of farm animals running around and/or freely grazing, but it's understood that they don't want folks chasing those free range chickens around. The whole tour took over 2 hours, which was a little long for me, so I left a bit early to hit up the farm store before the rest of my tour group did. I even ordered one of their last turkeys for Thanksgiving, which I'm beyond stoked about. I'd highly recommend this tour. Be a little patient, and eat a big breakfast before you come. There are no lunch options within walking distance, so unless you plan on snacking on a hunk of cheese, you might get hungry after the drive and the walking tour and the ooohing and aaahing at these beautifully kept grounds.

They did not have any local butter, but their imported options were worthy of being spread on some top quality bread, and I bought a couple of other things while I was there. Notably, they had a chocolate shop section as well as some nice looking salads. It was a small store, and as the term "gourmet" implies it was all premium stuff. It is mostly imports and it was not a particularly robust selection for those with special dietary needs. The butter was described to me as the "best butter in the world", which might be an exaggeration but not by a whole lot after having tasted it. Small niche food stores like this aren't places you could really live off of, but I found it a worthwhile visit.

FSG is sandwiched between One Good Tern Wild Bird store and Simply Fish restaurant in an odd layout of a strip mall off Quaker and Braddock in Alexandria. The owners are so very helpful, patient and kind. The prices are also comparable to bigger stores and chains. And, of course, they do generous case discounts. We normally buy cases of the Le Petit Duc La Porte (glad I'm typing it because I can't pronounce it) and we get a better price at Fern Street Gourmet than what they're selling it for at Whole Foods.
