The performance space was in a big warehouse with bleachers, comfortable seats, not the best sightline but good enough.

Once inside, you enter a dark theater with stadium type seating. There were no handrails on the way to your seat, which we would have appreciated. The restrooms are stage left & many stairs to navigate. BUT the theater itself is lovely. The performance we saw was top-notch. All employees at theater very helpful. The feel of the theater is so nice.

"...You went to Tennessee to see theatre?" "Well, I-- "You went to /Tennessee/ to see theatre?" "Yes. It was community theatre, too!" "Oh, god." It's not that my friend's cynicism was totally misplaced. I'd give the production itself 3 stars - the actors lapsed back into a slight Southern twang on occasion, which was distracting. And I personally wasn't a fan of the director's work. I prefer more creative license, thought put into light/set/timing/etc. A play is more than just its script! (Another theatre friend told me: "I've always imagined the set of that play to be just a door." BRILLIANT) Also, I hated the stadium seating. Heads potentially blocking your view is easier to deal with than having to gaze downward the whole time. Still, I'm all for supporting local arts, and the theatre and the production company that had put on the show (Act I) are great. We went to a 2:30pm Sunday matinee, because we're old people. Actually, yes, everyone else was a senior, aside from a young woman with a horribly intrusive cough. The theatre space, set in an old creaky church, was probably less than 20% full. The bathroom was pretty ancient looking. We were confused about the parking situation since there was no street parking available and no signage, and ended up in the McDonald's lot around the corner. Tickets were only $12. Credit cards are accepted; they use the Square card reader hooked up to an iPad. Otherwise, there's a low-budget feel to all of it, and it's really up to you whether to take it as dreary or endearing. Worth a visit as a tourist? Sure, if you're curious about Nashville's community theatre scene, or if like me you've been starved for theatre for too long in your ridiculously expensive home city.

Most of their performances are at Marathon Music Works, though I have also seen shows at Darkhouse Theater and Exit In (I have reviews for all the venues) but the Marathon shows are the best. They have a Cabin Fever show each winter which is worth braving the cold for. They have done special shows with the touring Suicide Girls and with local songwriters. The tickets are always reasonably priced so there's no excuse not to go. These ladies are not strippers. They are dancers, classical and edgy. So many people I know are nervous about going to one of their shows but these are classy, fun girls providing classy, fun entertainment. The crowds are energetic and great to be a part of. The dancing is about tantalizing, teasing, enticing...and it's fun! Their skits are a combination of dance and humor and beauty. I would highly recommend attending one of these shows. Of course I love the big screen too, but this is a great way to not only be entertained but support your artist neighbor. The good: * The actors/singers/dancers - all the talent. They are really really good. They were much better than I expected and there were even a few of them that I think could easily compete with the pros. * It's charming. There's lots of heart. * The parking lot is big, it's easy to park and walk right in. * their website is good and makes it easy to order tickets in advance. The bad: *The sound system, "band" (aka keyboard) and mics. OUCH. I'm maybe more picky than your normal joe, but boy could they use an upgrade. * One bathroom. ONE. On the night I was there we were seeing SPAMalot with about 40 Senior Citizens. Intermission took an eternity. Not to mention the bathroom is up front by the stage - making it awkward and interrupting if you need to use it during the show. * Uncomfortable hotel conference chairs. And if you're not on the upper raised part, you might get a ruined view if the person in front of you is tall or has big hair. Whah whah. You should check it out and support this wonderful troupe. We paid $18 to see SPAMalot on a Thursday which I think was painfully overpriced - but alas, I do want to support this kind of venture. I think most shows are under $15 which would be more reasonable. So check it out and enjoy these TRULY talented folks!!

Nashville Ballet

Since moving to Nashville a couple of years ago, I've attended three ballets performed by the…read moreNashville Ballet. And I've been blown away by all three. I know that ballet probably sounds old and stuffy and traditional to people, but let me go out on a limb here and say that the Nashville Ballet is pushing boundaries of what ballet is and can be and that their performances are among the best performance art experiences I've had in this city. Don't believe me? Let me try to convince you! My first ballet was Cinderella. It's a traditional ballet with music composed by Sergei Prokofiev. So what did Nashville Ballet's amazing artistic director Paul Vasterling do with it? He showcased men in the roles of the evil stepsisters - all three male dancers had to dance in pointe shoes for the first times in their careers. He made sure that the Cinderella in his version of the ballet was a strong character (not a damsel in distress). The ballet was a joy to watch. My second ballet was The Raven followed by Lizzie Borden (a double feature just time for Halloween). The Raven was a world premiere of a piece inspired by the Edgar Allen Poe poem, and Lizzie Borden examines (you guessed it) the double-murder case in Fall River, Massachusetts, in 1892. These probably aren't the ballets you picture when you hear "ballet." They were bold and original and interesting, and I was glued to my seat. Just this past weekend, I attended the Friday night performance of Superstitions and Seven Deadly Sins. Superstitions was a piece composed by a local composer, and the choreography was inspired by both ballet and hip hop/contemporary dance. It was powerful and beautiful. I can't begin to say enough about Seven Deadly Sins. Nashville singer-songwriter collective Ten Out of Tenn composed seven songs inspired by each of the seven deadly sins and performed them live on stage as the ballet was performed. Not only was the music amazing, it was a perfect accompaniment to the ballet's choreography. This is what art in Nashville can be when artists aren't kept in their boxes of classical music, country music, performance art, etc. This was Nashville's talent being used to its fullest potential: great dancers, great choreographer, amazing artistic director, great writers, great musicians. This was inspiring and amazing - and, I'm not kidding, I loved it so much I went again Saturday night. Next year I have tickets to attend Lucy Negro Redux - a world premiere and another performance made possible by talents that might not necessarily collaborate in a city without Paul Vasterling as the ballet's artistic director. Based on a book by a local poet about the "Dark Lady" in Shakespeare's sonnets and featuring an original score by Rhiannon Giddens with spoken word performed by the poet? I'm there. Even if ballet isn't your thing, maybe scroll through their season overview and see if anything strikes you as interesting. Nashville Ballet is always pushing boundaries and experimenting with ballet (but they do keep a few classics - The Nutcracker, for example - on the books for traditional ballet fans), and there might be something that inspires you to give ballet a second chance. The tickets are reasonably priced (less than many concerts in Nashville), and it's a fun night on the town/date night/girls' night to grab a fancy dinner and go to the ballet. I've loved each and every performance of the Nashville Ballet I've seen, so I'll definitely be keeping my eyes out for what they're up to for the 2019-2020 season!

The traditional offerings, such as The Nutcracker, are delightful and well-done. But what sets the…read moreNashville Ballet, and makes it world-class, are the commissioned, original works. Last year I experienced "Lucy Negro Redux," an amazing performance of the spoken word, original music, and amazing dance. This year it was "Attitude: Other Voice," an inventive beautiful work that explored gender and sexuality and gender roles. Nashville is not just "Music City." the Nashville Ballet is helping us become a city that celebrates dance as well.

This past season, I went to all but one of their operas. In October 2017, I went to Tosca (twice actually). Tosca is Puccini, so this opera was classic and traditional and beautiful (and really sad, of course). In January 2018, I went to Hercules vs. Vampires, which was a 60s cult movie set to a new operatic score and sung before a large screen playing the film - it was wildly fun and funny. And in April 2018, I went to Susannah - a more modern opera, sung in English, and set in East Tennessee; it's described as a "folk opera." For this last opera, I went with a friend of mine who had never been to an opera before, and we both really enjoyed the production! In three operas I saw over the course of a single season, the Nashville Opera blew me away! This past season was a great mix of traditional and modern and playful. It feels very much like they are trying to be a modern opera for a growing, youthful city, so I hope that more people give the opera a try during the upcoming season. It's more varied and interesting and entertaining and beautiful than a lot of people might expect. Keep up the great work, Nashville Opera!

However, what I can give feedback on is the absolutely beautiful facility they have in Sylvan Park... WOW! I had no idea that this modern HQ was behind Climb Nashville and the Nashville Ballet all this time. Once you turn the corner, you can't miss the large and contemporary offices. I met with their Marketing Manager Andrea Smith who gave me a tour and filled me in on what they have in the pipeline for this season. From light-filled rehearsal space (which can double as an interesting event space, for all of you party planners) to the costume warehouse, I was a kid in a candy store. The most impressive thing for me is that the Nashville Opera yearns to grow their audience by infusing unique and fun elements into their shows such as the Western Wear Contest for the upcoming show of The Girl of the Golden West or Opera @ Dyer Observatory - Opera on the Mountain coming up in the Summer. Picnicking and opera music? Yes. Please. Don't count out the Nashville Opera as a stuffy institution because you'll miss out!

We bundled up in coats and scarves, and walked around the empty construction site at night with our iPhone flashlights 14TENN only consisted of some raw wood, a few original beams and a wonderful owner named Sean, who had no staff hired in Nashville yet. But we knew we HAD to get married there. We could see their vision and it matched ours. BEST DECISION EVER. I mean look at this place. And their customer service.. Over the top!! I could go on for days. Just know, the insanely beautiful space is just the icing on the cake. It's the people there that make this place what it is. Which leads me to our wedding coordinator Kaitlynn Montgomery. An angel in human form. This girl, y'all. I messaged her at least once a week with another ridiculous idea. And she encouraged me on every single one of them. Anyone who knows me knows how annoyingly Type A I am and how I prefer to do things myself and plan every detail to nauseam. Kaitlynn took SO much off my plate. If I asked her about something or suggested something, she had already taken care of it 3 days prior. She was always 5 steps ahead of me at all times. She single handily took my stress level down 1,000 notches on a daily basis. Every single last detail or idea that we came up with for this wedding would absolutely have never been possible without Kaitlynn. She brought it all to life. And Ellyse.. Her and Kaitlynn worked their butts off together on our wedding day and it was perfect. Every time I saw Ellyse that day, she was smiling ear to ear and it immediately put my nerves at ease. These two girls are just the absolute sweetest and SO freaking good at their jobs. Now, one of the most important guy of the night... Our alcohol and bar concierge, Hunter!! I remember calling him one day thinking, he is going to kill me and I'm about to make him hate his job I was like, So I was thinking about cocktail hour and how it would be cool to serve hand-crafted blueberry mojitos named after our dog in 150 coconut cups with stir sticks that have our dog's face on them. Oh and I want them all displayed on shelves with signs and the whole works. He was like, hell yeah, you got it. Not only that, he insisted on pulling out all the tricks. Infusing his own simple syrup with mint and having us over TWICE to taste the recipe and make sure it was perfect. He loves his job and it shows. He took full ownership of the bar and making sure we didn't even have to think about it. THANK YOU HUNTER!!! In summary,14TENN was an absolute dream come true and we cannot recommend them enough.
