J&A Custom Carpentry is the Bomb…read more We just had James put in a new deck at our home and it was an awesome experience. He took the time to work with us in our budget, recommended materials that were of high quality and long lasting, crafted the cedar spindles from scratch and designed it to fit the existing frame. He even made accommodations in the design for our aged dogs. James is professional, punctual, and one of the hardest workers I know. I would recommend him to anyone and plan to use him again for other work.

He provided a quote much higher than the estimate and when I question about it he got defensive and denied the original estimate. But I decided to use him anyway because I only needed to replace 2 doors so I didn't want to waste time going back and forth. Then, about a month ago, Eddie replaced my blue high-gloss kitchen door with a different door that does not match the rest of my kitchen doors. While the color is the same, the new door does not have the same thermofoil finish as the original. Instead, it appears to have simply been painted with blue high-gloss paint. There are also several other issues with the replacement door: -The inside of the original door was black, but the new door is white. -The original door had three hinges, but he installed only two. -The new door is loose and does not appear to be properly secured. I have asked Eddie to come back and fix the loose door, but he continues to make excuses, saying that he is not in the building. At this point, I am very disappointed with both the quality of the replacement door and the lack of follow-up service.

Furniture needed to be moved out, closets emptied, etc... and then we had to leave on vacation right after the job was done. Tight schedule. Allex came in with a team and delivered. The company steers you to Cambria and Caeserstone and gives you no other options for countertop brands so be prepared to pay the premium. At that point, I lost confidence in this company. Luckily my downpayment had not gone through and I was able to get out of this. Unprofessional, rude (especially Jose), unresponsive. My project was delayed by a month because he would not communicate with the partner flooring company and send photos, as he had promised. Would not show up on scheduled appointments. I had to beg them. I do not know how they stay in business, treating customers with the utmost disrespect. When I called to reschedule an apt after a 'no show' no one ever bothered to to call back. Said tending to emergency, and will call back; they never did. I was also charged several hundreds of $$ above the agreed price on the final bill. I called and asked the reason, and no one bothered to call me and explain. I kept calling because there were unresolved issues and some things were not correct with the final product. They were supposed to fix them. No one called me back. I now have to find someone else on my own and pay extra money to fix their issues and their mistakes. This is totally outrageous. Undoubtedly this company only cares for money; also shown by incredibly cheap, labor to save costs. Stay away. You will regret dealing with them. They are not worth the aggravation. They are not all that great. Find someone else, reputable and respectable who cares about their customers. Overall, I give them a 0 rating. Unprofessional, rude, unresponsive, not customer focused.

Examples include…read moregiant stuffed bears, samurai swords, bathtubs full of cheeseburgers, telling someone off via skywriting, and dumping tons of manure in a place it shouldn't be.* But high-quality built-in shelves from Quarter Sawn? Worth your money. Manuel Calixto puts the MAN in Manuel, if that makes any sense at all. I initially requested a quote via Yelp, he got back to me quickly and came by the very next day to measure and chat. Now I just hit him up via text because we're tight like that. He is so casually competent and knowledgable; it's clear he and his family have done plenty of high-end carpentry and so he has great suggestions for what you may need. Do you need a bar? Lights for your bar? A mirror behind to show your liquor off best? Is your bar not the most important thing in your apartment? Do you need a drawer that folds down to hide your original Nintendo? A false back behind the TV to conceal all the wires? Do you need a secret compartment to hold illicit substances and/or dead bodies? (I'm just kidding about that last part. How could you fit your collection of dead bodies behind a shelf without people realizing your cabinets were way too small for the space? You couldn't, silly.) After we put down a deposit and Manuel came by for another visit to finalize the design and take some more precise measurements, we got shop drawings back just a week later. After an additional week, the unit was built and ready for installation...much sooner than expected. Manuel actually quoted us 4-6 weeks for the whole process, but he likes to under-promise and overdeliver in this case, which I like. Things I Would've Liked To Have Known Before We Started: 1. When it comes to installation, chances are Manuel will not be doing it. His guys are really nice and do great work, but I was surprised that the guy I'd been communicating with the entire time never came by during the installation process. And this made me a little sad because I love Manuel. But his brother was there, and they could be twins so that's good. And I believe his father Victor is the carpenter, and the work is excellent (the most important thing). 2. Punctuality is not always their strong suit. You should have the entire day blocked off if you want to be present for the installation (two days total). They probably won't arrive first thing in the morning (if you live in Brooklyn). Geography is annoying sometimes. 3. My cat did not like these guys. I was afraid he might be racist, but then I remembered he's just an all-around asshole and hates just about everyone. Now I don't have a cat anymore, because Manuel and his team are more important to me.** 4. Hardware is not included. If you want to have knobs or handles on your cabinets/drawers (most people need them for opening said cabinets/drawers), you should get those beforehand so you can have the guys install it, especially if you are as non-handy as I am. The Bottom Line: Manuel and his family at Quarter Sawn do beautiful work, and we are so happy with how he's transformed our small apartment into a small apartment with a lot of great-looking storage. We've come back twice, if that's any indication. Now it looks like grown-ups live here; our new shelves/cabinets blend seamlessly in with the wall, as if they were always meant to be a part of the apartment. It definitely isn't cheap, but quality work never is. (And it actually was cheaper than a few other folks we looked at.) I'm going to continue to use Quarter Sawn to build other things in the future, and you probably should too. _____________ *Look, I'm not judging you if this is how you choose to spend your money. I'm just saying I haven't found it to provide the ROI I'd ideally want. **That's not really why I don't have a cat anymore. But I really do like Manuel.
