Mosiah L.

It seems like brick and mortar bookstores are becoming obsolete and bookstores that specialize in comics are even rarer. Even though I'm a grown man, I still enjoy reading graphic novel comic books. I've never outgrown them and I don't think I ever will. So you can imagine my joy when I received a $50 Oxford Comics & Games gift card from friends as a Christmas present. Oxford Comics is located on 2855 Piedmont Road, near the Buckhead district of Atlanta. It is about a four block walk from the Lindberg MARTA transit station but you can also catch bus 5 from that station to get there. Some of the surrounding businesses are a Mercedes Benz dealership, a place called the Actor's Centre and is directly across the street from The Werner Law Firm. Oxford is a throwback to the comic book stores of years past. When you enter, there are comic books on the walls and on shelves in the middle of the store. The books are divided in sections based on whether they're DC, Marvel, etc. There are super hero collectibles for your desktop, bobbleheads, t-shirts, posters, graphic novels, and there's even a section that has hentai dvds (if that's what you're into). The store is clean and has that fresh comic book smell. When I went this past Friday (December 29, 2017), there was a black guy and a white guy working there and both were polite and helpful. I was looking for the Miracle Man graphic novel written by my favorite comic book writer, the eccentric Alan Moore. The Miracle Man that I found didn't have his name on it. Without the employee's help, I would never have known that the reason why the book's author was quoted as "the original writer" is that Moore had quarreled with the publishing comic book company and as a result refused to let them put his name on the cover even though he wrote it. Moore is a brilliant writer but is prone to diva-ish antics at times. I'm thankful for the fact that Oxford employs true comic book nerds who understand the value of what they're selling. I entered with a list of graphic novels I was interested in and found nearly all of them there. The employees even offered to order the books I didn't find. Besides the cleanliness of the store, the available selections, and the excellent customer service, I also like the hours of operation. Oxford is open 10 am - 10 pm Mondays-Saturdays and 11 am - 7 pm on Sundays. About the only things I can criticize about this store is that I didn't see many books on sale, though most of the posters were on sale for 50% off. It's no big deal though, because a comic book store can't stay in business by putting everything on sale. I'm rating Oxford Comics & Games five stars and will most certainly be back.

Manga section soon as you walk in to the left

It's a nice little hole in the wall shop with much more space inside than you'd think. They have a huge selection of comics and figures with a manga section as soon as you walk in which was nice.

Oxford Comics can spawn spontaneous nerdgasms in those predisposed towards arguments like "Superman vs. the Hulk?," "fast vs. slow zombies?" and "when, oh when will I ever lose my virginity?" I kid. I kid because I love and I love to be a kid. I love the wide selection of new releases. They even keep some of the more recent back issues up in those racks for those who've neglected to feed their fix on the alloted Wednesdays. The books aren't bagged as other stores might do, allowing you to make sure you don't accidentally end up buying the same issue of Blue Beetle two months in a row like some hypothetical person may have done, who then ends up bitterly writing about it on yelp.com a couple of months later. The rest of the store is a lesson in geek culture. Need the latest, obscure variant Elseworld's Aquaman action figure? Then this is your place. If you understood what those words meant individually, but not necessarily placed in that specific order, then move along. There's anime, manga, and hentai (oh my!) So if you like your characters badly dubbed, your eyes unnaturally large, and your tentacles kind of freaky, you've found your place. So check out Oxford. Nerdvana for the discerning comics fan.

Back issues off limits

Very nerdy vibe and you could spend forever browsing. It's nostalgic in there. The other reviews saying the place is kinda disorganized are correct. I didn't think it unsanitary, though. My Review of the Book Crook: Waiting 48 Years to Leave This Google Review…read more On my 13th birthday decades ago, my parents opened a small new-and-used bookstore called The Book Trading Post here in the Atlanta area. They ran it successfully for 12 years. My father had connected with Alex, the owner of the original Book Nook on or near North Decatur/Clairmont, who promised a great variety of around 30,000 books. What arrived instead were massive duplicates -- 30 to 50 copies of the same titles. It was a horrible, upsetting experience that stayed with my father. At the time I was 13 and didn't really know what it all meant -- I just knew he was upset. My father passed in 1981 after chemotherapy and radiation at Emory. Recently, I brought in a large personal collection to the current Book Nook Decatur location -- over 130 albums plus many books, including rare 1940s-1960s sci-fi classics and a signed copy of Miracle in Atlanta. As a longtime collector of coins, books, comics, historic color brochures, and more, I knew the value easily exceeded $500, likely more. I first spoke with the manager on March 25th of this year. He gave a standard percentage quote and left a message. When I returned on March 27th to collect payment, I received just $70. They kept all the books -- which filled the entire counter on the right when you walk in -- and roughly half the albums. I left with two small suitcases. Walking around the store afterward, I saw their selling prices and realized they stand to make a substantial profit. I spoke with the manager (Doogie, like Doogie Howser from the 1980s show) and then with an employee named Scott, who has been there for years. I shared some of this backstory. Scott was pretend friendly and even suggested I didn't really need to write a bad review. That conversation left me feeling extremely uncomfortable, and that discomfort is exactly why I decided to write this review now. The owner is very old (likely in his late 80s or early 90s) and does not come into the store. I felt the manager was dishonest in the way the offer and process were handled. It all felt like history repeating itself in the worst way -- like a scene from Red Dawn: "Avenge me." In the end, I just took the money to be done with it. This isn't just about one low payout. Most people don't know the old story of The Book Trading Post and that first disappointing deal with the Book Nook. Now the full 48-year circle -- from my parents' store in the 1970s to today -- is part of the public record. If you have anything of real value (books, albums, collectibles), think carefully before bringing it here. Get your own realistic expectations and consider other options. P.S. For comedy purposes, I've officially renamed this place The Book Crook.

This is a great shop…read more Being new to the area, I didn't know what to expect. Wanting to find a new comic book/toy shop, I was hopeful and man, this place did not disappoint. This place has everything. The comic selection is vast and the prices vary: they have a $2 selection, $5 selection and of course more expensive comics. Everything is nearly organized and at times overwhelming because there is truly such a large section that you could thumb through these for hours. The toys! Wow, so many i haven't seen in years or ever. I did find some of the pricing to be a little steep, but i suppose its supply and demand. Everything again was nearly organized and structured by specific genre, group. The staff was beyond helpful and friendly. They were super knowledgeable and just plain ol' nice. I can't wait to make this my regular comic book shop in the future. I spent a bunch of money and I'm sure I'll spend a bunch more.

I don't live in GA anymore so my usual monthly collection shopping halted. Used to go often when I lived near this shop. I'm glad to see this place going strong. Dave himself usually is in store or traveling for trade shows. He has a classic slick back hair style, can't miss him. Really cool guy and versed in comic pop culture from toy collectibles to golden/silver age comics. I am an avid golden/silver age collector. The prices are worth shopping here due to convince. The store always changes and usually everything in alphabetical order. You'll most likely find what you're searching for fast. If not the store associates or Dave himself will definitely assist you. Reasonably priced, especially since you can't find most items in major retail anymore or even online. If the product isn't available, Dave usually can get what you're looking for under a month. I don't know how he does it, but he puts Ny comic shops to shame. I'd find more of my collections at Dave's than any comic store in NY. Ironic since comics were heavily produced there. All and all, you can only access this location via car. I recommend Uber from a transit drop off point if commuting from metro Atlanta. It's worth bringing $20-100 to shop for particular comic magazines. He still does $.50-2 deals for back issues. I hope this shop continues because he always have or can get what you're interested in.
