While yes, it…read moreis held in a parking lot, the manicured grounds of the Larimer County Courthouse make for a pleasant millieu. As such, I am apt to spend a few minutes after I've finished my shopping sitting on the lawn (or rather a bench with all the wet weather we have been having lately), sipping my coffee and enjoying a little people/puppy watching to start off my Saturday rather than just rushing on to my next errand. This market is held on Saturdays from about mid-May through sometime in October and generally has a nice selection of vendors. My go-to spots include Native Hill Farms (I just joined their market CSA -- such a great program), Noosa Yogurt (normally $2+ for an 8 oz. tub in the grocery stores, but get 3/$5 at the farmers' market), Hazel Dell mushrooms, and of course the various fruit vendors come summer and fall. Discoveries for me early this year include Mama's Tofu (yes, tofu made in the Fort!), Lovif Patisserie (mmmm macarons and other sweet indulgences) and the Coffee Registry (get a cup brewed just for you). There is an educational component to this market, too, as it is run by master gardeners from the Larimer County extension ... stop by their booth to pick up information on canning or composting or what have you. I have been meaning to take canning classes from them for years ... maybe this year will be the one.

They trimmed the bone end and pushed all the meat to the top. This made them less fatty and stringy, more crispy and delicious. Their short rib croquettes were also amazing. I'd never had a short ribs prepared this way stuffed inside a tasty pastry with potato and cheese. They are my new favorites. I was so full on appetizers that I went straight to dessert next and I have to say that their cookie dough creme brûlée. It wasn't too sugary and the cookie dough flavoring was not overpowering. Simply fantastic way to end a meal. I even took home their brownie and ice cream for my housemate. They said it was the best brownie they've ever had.

On the first trip I discovered Choice City Butcher and the best damn hamburgers I have ever had, anywhere, bar none. I returned for a burger pilgrimage at least once on every trip since. The vibe was casual (order at the counter/bar) and the beer selection was outstanding. This last year I went back for my yearly trip and was excited to introduce one of my colleagues to this place. As soon as I walked in, it all seemed different. The beer taps were gone, a waiter (!!) greeted us and seated us in a foofy feeling booth. I inquired about the changes and found that the ownership had changed recently. The menu was much more upscale feeling (though prices were relatively reasonable) and lacked the signature burgers I was looking forward to. Our order started with the brussels sprouts appetizer. Solid app. Very tasty and nicely roasted with a yummy aioli. My old fashioned was fine, but nothing special (I make a better one at home with $20 bottle bourbon). My main was their Horsetooth Burger (Chili Relleno burger) which was pretty disappointing. The patty itself looked and felt like it was frozen, not hand formed like the old ones. The Poblano was nearly tasteless and way too big for the bun. Overall the burger was very average and not very flavorful. In the long run, I was pretty disappointed in the food. Service, was great. Very attentive and friendly. Despite that, this will probably be my last visit to Choice City. I will mourn the loss of those amazing burgers for the rest of my life...

Btw, I have been to France many times on business, have eaton at some of the best restaurants in Paris, really good, just not to my taste. Ok, we went here last Sunday, I wasn't hungry, but my wife was, so we thought we would use the card. Wife ordered a beef dip, one of her favorite sandwiches, not on my top 10 list. I ordered a charcuterie plater, figured we could take it home, which we did. Anyway, I took a bit of her sandwich, and even though I wasn't hungry, I ate about half of it. One of the best sandwiches I have ever had of any kind. Very simple but delicious. Baguette was amazing, beef appeared to be cured somehow, huge flavor, au jus was great. Today I am going to Timnath to meet a friend for lunch and I am going to make a 30 minute detour to get a sandwich for us for dinner. Not inexpensive, but worth it. Life is too short to eat mediocre food, plus I am a stingy with my calories, like to spend them on delicious food. Thank you La Boutique. Sincerely, Bret and Michelle

I just love the FoCo food scene and wanted to try something new. The barista made a few suggestions. It was before 11am, so that eliminated all the pretzel roll options on the menu. I decided to go with the Roma. She was right! It was refreshing. I loved every bite. Very bread-forward but clearly a high quality bake. My partner got the French Dip and enjoyed it. There's a few small tables as well as barstools along the wall, but most people ordered to-go. Check out the marketplace items, too. So cute!
