Enter Esiah, our awesome instructor. He went through all the basics for us very green beginners, and emphasized the importance of looking straight ahead (and hula hands, which are now a family staple as we describe to people how to surf). The four of us went out in the water with Esiah, and we ALL FOUR caught waves, even me (who was definitely least likely). Esiah was awesome: complimentary, enthusiastic, and giving us feedback as my wife and I kept coming back to fall off again. Thanks to his awesome teaching, timing, and patience we had a blast, and my wife and I ended the day taking waves all the way to shore where we promptly had our boards run into our shins. Awesome memory, and we look forward to going out again.

We had Essyia (no idea how to spell his name) as the instructor for our boys. He was very patient and basic with the instruction for the boys. He made sure they understood the dry land training before going to the water. He helped each one of them ride a few waves. The younger two definitely got worn out pretty quickly. It was our first day there and our lessons started at noon so there could have been a couple of factors for them wearing down. But, I have to say, the youngest one has a Gtube so we were a little worried about him trying this. He did great! Nothing slows that kid down...well maybe an hour of surfing slows him down some. Very thankful for these guys helping our boys have this experience ! ‍

A beach with an interesting name, Shipwreck Beach is located on the south shore of Kauai, close to…read morethe more popular Poipu Beach. It is easily accessible by car via a paved road (Ainako Street) betwen the Grand Hyatt and the golf course. My wife and I spent a couple of hours here, mainly because ironwood trees grow in the sand towards the back of the beach, and provided shade for where we sat down (it wasn't too crowded even in the early afternoon, and found parking in the small dirt parking lot adjoining). This is the beach that the folks staying at the Grand Hyatt would use, so saw loungers and umbrellas setup specifically for them. There was also good 5g reception so was able to surf the web while watching people surf the waves. The surf here is strong, and the shore break is very close to shore. This meant that folks were surfing and body boarding very close to shore, and I was amazed how they were able to avoid each other (and swimmers)...it definitely takes skills to do that...this is not a surf learning beach. Even saw one guy enter a barrel, being engulfed...have not seen one so close to shore before. I did enter the water and enjoyed it until a big wave caught me good and threw me ashore like a rag doll. Luckily I didn't pull anything, so decided not to push my luck anymore for the rest of the trip.

We had an awesome time with Jeff on the Wailua river. Jeff met me and my family and took us out on…read morethe river for me to try foiling (I've been windsurf foiling but wanted to get into prone or sup foiling). Jeff had a foil board for me and surfboard and boogie board for my kids to have fun too. We went up the river with me foiling at times and falling many. We stopped at Fern Grotto and had a spectacular view with just us. I did some more foiling heading back down the river and with some good pointers from Jeff, managed a couple really good foil runs. We then got my daughter behind the boat on a boogie board and she had a blast. Overall it was a great time and gave me some really good experience. Jeff is super knowledgeable and made sure I was on the correct foil equipment to match my weight and skill.

After hurricane Ewa, the personality of the beach changed. Ewa brought in a lot of rocks. The waves had become timid. No more bodyboarding and bodysurfing. To my surprise, today I see decent size waves And a good amount of bodyboarding and body surfers! Perhaps hurricane Iniki returned back to its ole' self? Well something happened!
