I had a wonderful acupuncturist for many yrs who retired. I move to a different city. A friend suggested Dr.Ou. He not take my pulses or examine me. Told me to bring medical records,yet did not read them. Kept telling me how experienced was. I ended up in great pain, told me to go home and rest and take hot baths. Did some yoga at home and realigned my back from the treatment. My shoulder is hurting more than it has in months and I'm now having severe nerve pain in my leg. The gentleman Dr. Li-Chun Ou (pronounced Dr. "Oh") has his business card depicted in the Photo Section. You can see that he is a traditional OMD and practices a very wide variety of modalities. The business card and the address number next to his door shows you are at 3905 Grand Ave. As you walk in the door, you see a more than life size golden manikin with meridians and points. If you call 510-420-0463, you get the woman at the front desk sitting behind the large golden manikin. She will likely book your appointment for the same day you call. This is quite unusual in most acupuncturist settings except for those trained in China as hospital doctors. Dr. Ou is set up to treat multiple patients at the same time. Dr. Ou will provide very thorough diagnosic protocols and can provide you with acupuncture, Tui Na (Chinese physical therapy massage), cupping and prescibe an herbal formula patent medicine that you can take home and use. Treatment often begins with Dr. Ou's gentleman associate who performs the Tui Na massage, and then Dr. Ou sets the needles and sometime the cupping. I would say that collectively the massage therapist and Dr. Ou are still engaged in diagnosis as they treat you and the treatment gets more refined and effective. I have most often in the two dozen times I've seen Dr. Ou gotten full or very significant resolution to my medical issues. Finally there's the price. I always get the "works": acupuncture, massage, cupping and medicine. When I first came 20 years ago, it was $90 for the total experience, and now in 2024 it's $120. That's a very reasonable price for such an extensive treatment. I'm more motivated to see Dr. Ou because I know he will see me most often on the same day if I call early enough. I can also go back to him on subsequent days if we need to take the treatment further. If you call in the morning or early afternoon, you'll most likely see Dr. Ou that same day. Dr Li-chun Ou, on the first floor, is excellent. He was the first person to unlock the muscle spasms I had in my back about 20 years ago after a sports injury. Prior to him I had tried different forms of PT and medical doctors here in the US and in France were they even tried cortisone shots. Nothing helped. Dr. Ou in one treatment relieved most if not all of the pain. I came back yesterday (20 years later). His place has not changed much and him neither did him (well as far as i could tell with the mask on). Anyways, he performed his miracle again and relieved me of my back pain. Very good care. My review is for Dr. Ou on the first floor. I wish I could give him 6 stars. This man knows what he is doing. He is very sympathetic if you are in a lot of pain and will spend a lot of time listening to you to identify what can really fix you. I also have gotten in ASAP when I was feeling horrible so he is super flexible on his time and/or really sympathetic. I got his name from my mom and a friend who swore by him. I have never been to acupuncturist before and had no idea what to expect. The place is not fancy, at all. If you are a clean freak, this is not the place to be. However, I get chronic migraines that were getting worse with age and went to several doctors, specialists, etc. Basically no one could really help me, for years. All the solutions involved medicine and a lot of it. I am sure that is not good for anyone's long-term health. I was at a point of trying anything. I have gone to him in a middle of a horrible migraine and have walked out feeling human. I hate needles and I rarely feel any sort of pain. I get massage as well and the man who works on me has arms of steel. For anyone who will listen to me, I suggest Dr. Ou. read more

So just a heads up, this is a building with I think three different offices. It's a family building. the number listed is for dr. Ju Chun Ou. She's the nice little buddha like lady on the top floor. There's another I think sister who specializes in more serious illnesses, and a man on the main floor who might be the father. I went into acupuncture a total sceptic, and walked into Dr. Ju Ou's office and walked out healthier than I walked in. Lots of it is just basic common sense. But I've been back many times, and I cannot recommend it more highly. One example is, like everyone else having mild tendonitis like issues with my computer wrists, she gave me some acupuncture and herbs and stuff, but most valuable was a very simple sort of kung-fu arm pattern thingy where you sort of circle your arms around like you're swimming. 5 mins a day for 3 days and I had massive improvement. To this day, I have no issues. I couldn't even find that move on the internet. Turns out she's a prior Kung-fu Sifu. You'd never know, she's very humble. Don't expect to be blown away. Don't expect a fancy office. Don't expect magic. But expect to be healthier and happier than when you went in. And isn't that the point? I love you Dr. Ou. read more

This is the real deal. I've been seeing Dr. Ou for the last month to help me with my Migraine headaches and stress. His services vary, but for $95 you get a consultation, an acupuncture session for 20-30 minutes, a tiu-na ( massage) for 30 minutes and herbs. Sometimes the price is more or less...depending on the herbs and length of time for your acupuncture or tiu-na session. I found Dr. Ou's office while walking to the nail salon. It's seriously a "hole-in-the-wall." When you walk inside, it's a very crowded office that smells like Chinese herbs. For each patient, there's a treatment "area" that is simply a massage table separated from other patients by curtains. So, during your treatment, you can hear everything going on outside. Don't be put off by this though; the treatment is still relaxing and you'll still get a lot of out it. If you're not convinced about acupuncture, here's one story that might help you. I've been traveling a lot for work, and during my latest trip, I had migraine headaches for about 3 days straight...and it never let up no matter how many extra strength Tylenol or aspirins that I took. I mentioned this to Dr. Ou, and he placed several needles in my scalp, on my neck, and down along my spine. Of the needles on my spine, a few of them were hooked up to an electrical device so during my session, I felt little pulses go up and down my back . Anyway, after the session, my migraine was gone, and I didn't take any medication that day to get rid of it. I have received A LOT of acupuncture. In one year, I received about 40 treatments (one per week). I have received treatments in a variety of settings including community acupuncture, and private sessions with professionals and students. Ching Chun Ou is the first acupuncturist I have seen with 45 years of experience, trained in China, and then came to the US and trained again to practice here. I like her A LOT. She's been more effective in one treatment for my condition than any other acupuncturist I have seen previously. Really. I appreciate that she is efficient and does not necessarily want to see you every week. She told me to return in one month which is not financially in her best interest. Most acupuncturists have told me to return every week. I like her technique. I don't feel pain when she inserts the needle. She does want you to feel the zing, the energy. So she'll turn the needle until you do but then as soon as you do, she stops turning the needle. And then you should be comfortable. By the way, you can't feel the needle turning (or I don't), I just feel the zap! She supports me through the zing which is no more than 3 seconds and then it goes away. Her philosophy is that if you don't feel the zing acupuncture does not work. I have received other treatments that I have not seen with other acupuncturists, and learned how some things in my foot show problems in other parts of my body. She prescribed herbs and tablets. Her office is not frilly or zen like. There's no zen music playing the in background with a water fall etc. It's the opposite. I enjoy her, her straight forwardness and her optimism. read more

She is nothing short of a miracle worker. I made the appointment for my neck and shoulders because they are constantly sore from the type of work i do but that morning I had an allergic reaction to a dental procedure and came in with a fat lip. Not only did the swelling go down while she worked on me but my neck and shoulders feel amazing. Better than any hour long massage. I felt that the needles hurt like any other acupuncture, I am a baby, but the zinging is a good thing. It's releasing energy and if you can laugh with her it's really funny. Needing an Acupuncture treatment for my bum knee, I found Dr. Ou through a friend of a friend. I nod hello to a man sitting outside the front of the office (more about him later). A friendly Dr. Ou greets me and sits down to access my issue and my general state of health. As Carmen states, $95 gets you the pin cushion session, a ragdoll twisting massage by the man who was sitting outside, that may make you squeal 'Uncle', and finally some stinky herbs that will get you any table you want in a restaurant! In all seriousness, this intense treatment and herbal treatments made my knee as good as new. I need to go back, as this will take a few more treatments. They take credit cards here. read more

WOW...I was at first skeptical and scared especially after reading one of the yelp reviews about it hurting. BUT I FEEL SOOOOO MUCH BETTER!! The only thing that hurt was just more of like a current of electricity like hitting a nerve AFTER she already had the needle in. And when I learned how to relax is when in faded. I was still in a little pain after I left I think because my energy was so blocked but about 2.5 hours later a sudden flow of energy surged through my body. It was a great feeling. Now I feel like I did when I was a kid. My body feels so much better. I've had over 10 years of chronic back pain. The doctors could not see anything wrong. It's only been 1 day. Wow! This place is a whole-health stop-off. She will take care of you, her phraseology is awesome, "trouble or no trouble," just to see if she's doing acupuncture for some specific ailment, or just for general restorative stuff. I was "No trouble," just seeing what acupuncture was like. She gave me some herbs to take home, which made me feel great, and really activated my chi. Now those herbs have me scared to go back, after having taken her herbs, I think her "zings" will be a lot stronger! Acupuncture turns your situation into one where any of the tiniest muscle flickering within a radius of one of those needles sends quick pain messages to you, so suddenly, you figure out how to relax very fast in the area around the needles. That process just creates these craters of intense, precise relaxation anywhere she puts a needle, and then she does it on huge nerves in your body (like my sciatic nerve, basically the femoral artery of the nervous system) and it was just releasing immense internal pressure for me. Added months to my life in an hour. Undid 26 months of straight bike riding. Total genius work. Definitely going back and glad to support her business with an honest review here on Yelp. read more

I've been coming to Dr. Ou's office for 18 months now. I've been to many accupuncturists. None are like this. It's like walking into a doctor's office in China, I suppose. I've never been to China, though. So don't take my word for it. But all the books and things on the wall are in Chinese. And he's awesome. It's such a nice feeling walking in to the office, smelling the herbs, and being greeted by a highly efficient and usually mono-syllabic, yet extremely warm Dr. Ou. I love love love Dr. Ou (the female Dr. Ou, never went to her brother the other Dr. Ou). I heavily relied on her when I didn't have health insurance for a few years. She helped me with various conditions including: a very nasty flu one time, irregular periods, asthma, and general tuneup. You get a bunch of herbs to take home too, so it's a good deal. She's like the loving but strict Chinese mother you never had. Certain parts can hurt a bit. But it works!! And of course if it hurts too much, you just tell her and she stops. After she puts the needles in, you sit there in the warmth and relax for a long time. That's the cool part, you can feel it working and it doesn't hurt at all. I am so grateful. I have been suffering for weeks, in pain, and was to the point where I couldn't function anymore- couldn't go to work, couldn't even go to the grocery store.. I came here and for $88 received acupuncture, a strenuous massage, heat therapy, and some herbal tea. Unbelievable. I feel 80% back to my normal self. I am so so so grateful to Dr. Ou. His clinic is not fancy and the patient tables are separated by curtains, so you can hear what's going on at the next table. So it's not fancy schmancy with waterfalls or lovely Asian doors, which is what my former acupuncturist had at her clinic (she, unfortunately, did not help me much with her treatments although she was very nice). I find the Chinese music that plays in the background strangely relaxing and comforting, too. I highly recommend Dr. Ou. OK- CAUTION. I'm really giving Dr Ou 31/2 stars- not 4 stars AND be forewarned that she is the real deal, but there is pain (I'M TALKING ABOUT SOME SERIOUS PAIN INVOLVED). I went to her 3 times. First two times, amazing results. Third time was too much for me. I'M surprised that the police and fire dept didn't respond when I received my "treatment". I guess I am a whimp. I REALLY wanted to continue treatment with her because it is obvious that she cared about my well being and knew how to treat my ailments because her first two treatments were truly effective. It was my first visit to an acupuncturist and thought the pain couldn't get any worse. Unfortunately, she is NOT gentle, no matter how much you ask her to be, and it's obvious that she has her own agenda when it comes to healing (and it DEFINITELY has nothing to do with being gentle). As she would say, and I quote, "NO OWEE, NO FIXEE". I hear from reliable sources that her brother, Dr Ou, with an office on the first floor, is much more gentle. I have been going to her for many years now. But my most recent experience with her confirmed her ability to heal. I use to be an athlete and have had many sprained ankles. Recently I sprained my ankle in the worse way where I thought I broke it. Went to the emergency room and they mentioned about 3 - 4 weeks of healing and not being able to walk. I paid her a visit and I must say, I walked out of there with out the crutches. It was still swollen but not as much as when I first walked in. The bad blood that caused it to be black and blue disappeared because she poked a bigger needle and let the bad blood out. Even when you are feeling down and not knowing why, she can get the energy to flow back and unclog your blood stream. I highly recommend her. I have had a knee problem for months. I thought I will go away, I thought that somehow it will be better. I emailed the doctor from my insurance back then, they said to take motrin. I heard of Dr. Ou from my wife that healed her aching tail bone with 1 session. I went to her she did 3 sessions on me and said that you need all 3. Dr. Ou's acupuncture treatments were fine, but his office is managed quite unprofessionally. The first time I scheduled an appointment, his office called me and cancelled it at the last minute. When I finally was able to secure an appointment with Dr. Ou, I was placed in a curtained cubicle where I could hear everyone talking. After Dr. Ou inserted the needles, a masseuse working on the other side of the curtain kept bumping into me. That is VERY UNPLEASANT when there are needles in your body. Despite my frequent requests that the masseuse stop bumping into me, they continued to do so throughout my visit. Once the needles were removed, the masseuse gave me a very perfunctory rub down. Despite my bad experience, I went back the following week for my scheduled visit, but the office was closed. I called several times and waited about an hour before I gave up and went home. Not only did Dr. Ou fail to call me back to reschedule or apologize, but he also billed my health insurance for the appointment HE MISSED! Amazing. read more

With my experience with Dr. Ou, it was somewhat negative unfortunately. It was a waste of $160 and somewhat traumatizing. She was recommended by my girlfriend's fiance, as his whole family adored her and knew her well. He did however caution me that her sessions can be intense and to try hard to embrace the pain I may feel in a healing, positive way. I did not read between the lines with this, of him mentioning this a few times. I arrived, filled out one sheet of paper, placed it on her desk (she was really busy with other patients). She spent a few seconds on the paper, put it down and looked at my urine (it was my first urine of the day so it was very yellow). She said I had an infection and to urinate once more, and then went to help someone else. After waiting awhile, she came back and looked at my urine and noted how much healthier it looked. During this time I was asking her questions about her thoughts on my condition. It seemed she had not read the paper which attempted to sum up the complicated history of my illness (the previous two months I was seriously ill in Guatemala). She didn't really address my questions. She took me to a room and explained the colors and noises I needed to make during the acupuncture session, while she was putting needles in my head and moving them around a lot. This hurt A LOT. But she didn't seem to lighten up, just kept telling me to concentrate on the colors and sounds I needed to make, that to say aloud, this doesn't hurt. But it totally did. Then I rolled over and she put a needle near my spine. The act of putting it in hurt very much. She has some little device that kind of shoots the needle in. Luckily, she didn't move it around like the head needles. She then removed the back needle and promised to not put the 2nd back needle in like she was planning to do. After about 1 1/2 hours, the session was done. She told me, my girlfriend and her fiance that I have something negative, like negative energy she said. At that point in time, I was undiagnosed. The two months of illness leading up to seeing Dr. Ou was the worst time of my life due to the symptoms of severe pain (think similar to dengue fever plus amoebas) and misdiagnosis. As a general rule, when one searches out entities for symptom relief without knowing the cause, the risk of unsatisfactory results is higher than if one knows what is going on and can articulate it, esp. across language barriers. In other words, it's harder to treat something if you don't know what it is. As with most of us, we know many who swear by acupuncture for any ailment as well as other folks who had impartial/mediocre experiences, but few who felt worse before the treatment than after. It's been 6 months since my session with Dr. Ou. I know a little bit more about my condition. According to western medicine, my condition is something like a neurological pain syndrome, kind of similar to fibromyalgia or complex regional pain syndrome (aka reflex sympathetic distrophy). I wished Dr. Ou didn't think she knew what was going on based on a couple of minutes of talking and then puncturing me with needles. I also wished she acknowledged that my pain tolerance was not what she expects or thinks it should be. I was unsuccessful in my attempts to relay the seriousness of my hypersensitive body condition. One of the biggest beefs I had with her was just that, she didn't really listen or at least acknowledge what I was trying to tell her. At the end of the session, she quickly told me and my girlfriend that she had focused on the head in order to change my relationship to pain. I'm sorry Dr. Ou that I failed your expectations and assumptions. Like the many western doctors I have seen, it appeared Dr. Ou was similar in that she wasn't much humble during the visit. A couple months after seeing her, I took an eight-week course on mindfulness and stress/pain reduction. Now that was my preferred medium in modifying my relationship to pain. Dr. Ou makes it a point to tell her patients (and her patients make it a point to tell others) that she attempts to fix the problem in one session so you don't have to keep coming back. I'd rather have several gentle sessions than one session crammed with harsh therapies. For my friend's family, Dr. Ou has helped greatly. I would simply caution a potential patient of Dr. Ou's to factor in your tolerance to pain. As my homeopath told me a few weeks after seeing Dr. Ou, her nickname among some health care professionals is Dr. Ouch. read more

I saw the elder lady Dr. Ou. I'm under the impression there may be two others, another brother and sister. She was good with the zings, but for my problem one visit didn't help, and she didn't want to make another appointment. Not that I could afford to. She charged me $198 for just under 1.5 hours. I heard she is very good, but this is way more than any acupuncturist has ever charged me. I called back a few weeks later, to see if the price charged was correct, and also couldn't get a straight answer on how much a second appointment would cost. I think her prices are too high, and as I said, I'm still having the same problem which didn't change at all from my one visit. read more

Dr Ou is fabulous. Several years ago I needed help to lower my cholesterol. Instead of writing me a prescription for drugs like my Kaiser Dr, she asked for a urine sample. After analyzing it she told me that my diet needed to be changed but the new diet wouldn't be easy. I followed her diet and within 6 months, had my cholesterol checked again. Dr. Ou has worked with through the years to become a healthy person. She has helped me to learn how to take care of myself. When I first visited her I was 60 lbs heavier, was approaching high blood pressure, heart problems, knee problems and possibly ms. A couple days ago I hiked 14 miles! When I first visited dr. Ou, she had me come in twice and then I went once a month for a couple months and then once every 6 months or so. She didn't schedule the appointments. I just went when I felt I needed a treatment. I felt empowered to reach for a healthy life. I love dr. Ou! She may cost more per visit but she is so worth every penny!
